Jason Licht Has Competition For Baker Mayfield

March 13th, 2023

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

Weird, weird moments on NFL Network this afternoon.

There were some eight talking heads taking turns yapping on on a program called “Free Agent Frenzy.” And it seems the show producers won’t let them talk about free agents other than drama queen Aaron Rodgers.

The show should be renamed, “Drama Queen Aaron Rodgers Frenzy.” Enough!

These dudes (and in-house stats queen Cynthia Frelund) seem generally peeved that the drama queen of Green Bay hasn’t decided if he will play or for whom he will play. It’s starting to become painful television.

In sort of a spin off of Rodgers chatter, Tom Pelissero noted Rodgers dragging his feet has repercussions for teams, including the Bucs.

With Rodgers not making a decision, a domino effect is beginning to develop. That may prevent the Bucs from signing journeyman quarterback Baker Mayfield, who strangely seems to be the girl in the bar the Bucs want to bring home (closing time must be near — you know, beer goggles).

Pelissero said the Jets need a quarterback. Houston is going to need a quarterback. Baltimore might need a quarterback. As a result, Mayfield now has many suitors standing near the exit door of the bar. So Mayfield can be a bit choosy.

Pelissero said, sure, the Bucs could sign Mayfield today still. It’s more likely Mayfield waits, as there seems to be a bidding war simmering for his services.

After Pelissero segued from Rodgers talk to Mayfield, the gang at the NFL Network quickly returned to babbling about Rodgers and his drama queen ways. Now they are talking about Jordan Love.

Good grief!

Hoping Karen Rodgers just retires. PLEASE JUST GO AWAY

  2. Dooley Says:

$8 Mil per for Mike White to goto Miami to be a back up to Tua, that deal has more implications on Mayfield in the QB market than a Rodgers trade as it sets the price point for lesser coveted QBs in a market where there are a good amount of them looking for new teams

  3. Rod Munch Says:

Mayfield is only going to get $4m, that’s what comments on this site tell me.

  4. Buddhaboy19 Says:

why don’t we just go hire all the 2nd and 3rd string quarterbacks that beat us over the past few years.

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Baker’s stats over the last two season (he went 8-16 over that span), adjusted to cover 17 games…

    3382 yards, 18 TDs, 14 INTs, 81.3 QB rate

So, basically, he’s a modern Trent Dilfer, just without the winning.

  6. Buc4evr Says:

Geez, So all theses teams are going to have a bidding war over a losing QB with maturity issues. If so, just bring Gabbert back. I expect the Bucs to tank next year whoever the QB is. They might as well get a high draft pick next year and rebuild the team.

  7. JN Says:

Dooley – true. Good call. 8M at the 225M salary cap is roughly 3.5% of cap. The Fish have Tua’s salary (do not know). For Bucs, they are hampered by the 35M Brady cap charge or about 15.5% of 2023 cap. Hence the reason they are KMart shopping for QBs but there are no blue light specials.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

I hope Rodgers leaves the Packers in limbo until the day after the draft, then retires. That would be awesome, leave them totally screwed.

It’s hilarious all these morons in Green Bay who want him gone, and they want that because they won the lottery once, going from Favre to Rodgers, and these idiots think they’re just going to win the lottery again.

  9. Oddball Says:

    @Buhddaboy

LMAO. Might actually come to that.

  10. Oddball Says:

    Sorry. “Buddha”…

  11. #99 the Big fella Says:

After having Tom Brady no matter who we get the buccaneer fans are going to be unhappy.. the crybabies will be in full force

  12. Duane Says:

In fairness to Mayfield, his stats from 2 seasons ago should not count. He had a severe shoulder injury, he should have been medically benched, but the stupid Browns forced him to play anyway under threat of being cut. So his stats sucked, but no quarterback is going to be good with an effed up shoulder. Of course Cleveland cut him anyway. He played well in a few games last season with the Rams, and he played well before his shoulder got banged up.

Stats matter, but sometimes they’re deceiving unless you take into account the circumstances.

  13. Cobraboy Says:

“Competing for Mayfield” is just more evidence how far the team has fallen.

  14. TheBucsAnthem Says:

no no no no no….god no please

  15. Pewter Power Says:

If you sign baker fine of let’s roll, I’d be pissed if they overpay for him and end up being an average team

  16. Cchead Says:

    Trade Masin for Matt Corral.

  17. KC Buc Says:

I mean to be fair, all the networks were spending all hours talking about Tom and the Bucs back when we first signed him and I’m sure everyone else was sick of that, so I get the Rodgers mania now. We got spoiled!

Baker certainly is an fun guy, so if worst case if Trask poops the bed and Baker starts at least we will have some entertainment till Caleb time!

  18. firethecannons Says:

who cares we suck no matter what happens so draft well picck up hooker for cheap in 2nd round or get an early 2024 pik and get a new coaching staff along with that 2023 is not an up year

  19. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Why is no one talking about how Baker Mayfield couldn’t make it work with the BROWNS…..the brownies for god’s sake?

Why is no one talking about how he couldn’t beat out Sam Darnold with lowest of the lows in Carolina?????

This very very very telling about a QB and his head space. He has obviously gone mental now.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

We’ll see what happens with the market, but I’ve pointed out that fact that Winston got a 2yr/$28m deal, with $21m guaranteed, last season. That’s pretty much in line with the type of deal I think Mayfield is going to get. GM’s pay guys based off ability, no their track record, and while Winston has a dramatically better track record, the fact they were both #1 picks, means that’s the kind of money that Mayfield is likely looking for. Which is hilarious since it’s all based on one good 4th quarter vs a very bad Raiders defense.

With that said, I could certainly be wrong, but I’ll be shocked if he’s only getting $4m to $6m a year. I mean the Bucs wanted to pay Mike Glennon $7m a year just to be a dedicated backup, and that was years ago, in today’s numbers that’s like $9m or $10m.

I just hope the Bucs aren’t that stupid with Mayfield. Look at his numbers, his production, the fact he’s a terrible locker room guy, and the fact the team is going to stink unless Brady unretires and resigns. Just take the hit in 2023, clean up the cap, and be ready to go all-in in 2024.

  21. WillieG Says:

Yeah, I had that show on for a few minutes. Then it occurred to me that I don’t have to watch because Joe does so for me. Yay Joe! Thanks again! Now if you guys would just set up text alerts so I don’t have to keep checking my phone.

(Seriously though, I bet if y’all had several thousand fan phone numbers to text with breaking Bucs’ news, you’d get the breaking news from the Bucs pretty damn fast.)

  22. BoricuaBucfan Says:

    Karen Rodgers🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  23. Redeemer Says:

Whatever they do, I think you Brady haters will be thoroughly unimpressed with our next QB. To hell with it. Go give two first rounder’s and pay Lamar. It’s not our money. Look at what Daniel Jones just got!! Lamar’s contract will be peanuts in 3 year. Either that or go sign Jimmy G. For 20 per.

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

Man, Rodgers is worse than my wife!

  25. TheBucsAnthem Says:

All this talk is just cannon fooder blustering hype train BS for the fan base

at the end of the day….the BUCS…i.e…..the Galzers boys aren’t going to spend $$$$ this year cause they know they are rebuilding for the next 3 years…..

so all of this “talk” is just that… “talk”

  26. Coburn Says:

Man without reading the context that headline had me spinning. Thought I missed us signing Mayfield and that we quickly signed someone else to compete against him as well.

  27. Shak Says:

    Nacho said goodbye on IG.

  28. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacccccccccccchhhhhhhoooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  29. Shak Says:

I’m hurt about Nacho. Good dude!

  30. Oneilbuc Says:

Redeemer. What does it matter know rather you worship Brady or you don’t? How anyone feel about Brady ain’t helping the bucs this year so please stop with the Brady talk he ain’t coming back. But this is what happens when you go all in with a old quarterback. This is the very reason why I didn’t want him from the start and yes we got a Superbowl out of it and that’s cool but now what?? I thought Brady changed the culture remember?? A culture change is not a 1 or 2 year change than back to losing. It’s about fighting for a championship every year. Look at the Steelers their always in the midst that’s a culture change.

  31. Joe Says:

Yeah, I had that show on for a few minutes. Then it occurred to me that I don’t have to watch because Joe does so for me. Yay Joe! Thanks again!

    LOL! 🙂 Thanks man!

  32. Dooley Says:

Hey Joe, you should think about a open thread for free agency, because ATL is throwing money like we at Magic City or KoD or Mons Venus

  33. Dooley Says:

Nacho is gone, locker room is gonna miss his energy for sure

  34. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

    Nacho to Giants

  35. Goatfarmer Says:

Leave it to Queenie Rodgers to create maximum drama. Who would want all that drama? 🤮

  36. Oddball Says:

    Aw mang. Liked Nacho.

  37. Dooley Says:

    Dean is back!!!

  38. snookman Says:

    Jamal dean Resigned!!

  39. Tye Says:

Bucs likely end up with the bottom of the barrel qb like Wentz or Brissett….

  40. NEfan Says:

Oneilsuckyall, ya a SB is cool. That’s what EVERY team, EVERY season strives to achieve. You are.the ultimate moron hater. Do you live in the swamps all camouflaged up polishing your AR-15 praying for a revolt?

  41. Larrd Says:

Trask is fine. 8-10 million might get a good defender. Or Nelson and Edwards or Bunting. They are very short on the front seven and everywhere, really.

  42. Rand Says:

Anything more than 3 million is too much.

  43. Dooley Says:

Welp, we can bump CB from the postion 19th overall pick, but this CB draft class is deep enough to warrant drafting a CB with SMB most likely hitting the road. Now we’d be looking for a CB with fluid hips, good eyes, and that doesn’t shy away from tackling because playing the nickel is just as difficult as playing on the boundary w/o the benefit of limited space.

  44. mark2001 Says:

Buddha…why don’t we just go hire all the 2nd and 3rd string quarterbacks that beat us over the past few years.

Simple Answer…we don’t have that many roster spots.

  45. SlyPirate Says:

    WHATEVER

Blaine Gabbert and a million other vets on par with Baker are available.

  46. 80forBrady Says:

Baker Mayfield was QB for the Browns teams who had the best 1-2 RB punch in the NFL with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt (both of whom topped 1,000 total yards of offense for multiple years). One of those years Todd Monken (the Bucs first choice for OC was the Browns OC). But Baker could not win.

How will ths change if Baker comes to Tampa? Drop out of the Baker the Faker sweepstakes and use the money in the trenches.

  47. 80forBrady Says:

    Minshew

  48. Joe Swanson Says:

The best quarterback still left is Taylor Heineke a lot better the Mayfield plus he is a better leader if you can afford Dean you can afford Heineke.

  49. Mike S Says:

Now the Bucs can draft edge rusher in the 1st round

  50. Stanglassman Says:

    Johnny football is available.

  51. TF Says:

Let the Jets have Mayfield. Minshew is a waaayyyy better fit for the Bucs

  52. WVBuc Says:

Rodgers will announce his decision between Noon & 3 PM eastern on whatever day the announcement is made. I’d wager first on tomorrow since Tuesday is his normal day on…..the Pat McAfee show. McAfee & Rodgers have been very good to each other and it makes sense the exclusive is broken on that show. Every day that 3 PM eastern passes without an announcement is another day none is coming until the next Noon-3 PM slot M-F.

  53. Suggiefresh Says:

Amazing the number of you that still believe everything that’s written or said on ESPN or NFL Network. They have to say the most F-d up things to keep your interest. Even without a shred of evidence they make up s**t or spectulate in order to fill TV time, that’s all. Why not wait until it happens and then bitch about it.
