Bucs Add Two Draft Picks

March 10th, 2023

Former Bucs tight end O.J. Howard.

If you cried when O.J. Howard was signed by the Bills and hard-hitting safety Jordan Whitehead, a 2020 playoff hero, landed a fat contract with the Jets, perhaps you’ll be soothed today.

Compensatory draft picks have been announced and the Bucs scored two for the 2023 NFL Draft. “Comp picks” are earned via a complex formula that factors lost free agents during a previous offseason versus added free agents, and includes salaries, performance and more.

The Bucs were granted fifth- and seventh-round picks as part of losing Whitehead and Howard.

Below are all the Bucs’ draft picks coming up in late April: (The missing fourth-round pick is courtesy of a draft-day swap of picks with Jacksonville last year.)

Round 1: No. 19 Overall
Round 2: No. 50
Round 3: No. 82
Round 5: No. 153
Round 5: No. 175 (compensatory pick)
Round 6: No. 181 (from Colts in Grant Stuard trade)
Round 6: No. 186
Round 7: No. 230 (from NY Jets in Steve McLendon trade)
Round 7: No. 252 (compensatory pick)

Some guys are comp pick fan boys

  2. Jvato24 Says:

If Brady goes to Dolphins, anticipate an additional possible 3rd rounder next season,, same for Jamel Dean

  3. AL121976 Says:

The 49ers hit the fn jackpot w comp picks, hopefully we can do the same next year

  4. Pryda sec 147 Says:

It’s taken a few years but Jason has done Fantastic job to build our team we never ever had comp picks before and now look we got 2 and next year looking to haul in even more! Keep drafting strong Licht 🍻

  5. Rick Says:

I guess Alex Cappa was cancelled out by the players we added. Next year will be better since we are in salary cap hell

  6. I’m not tired anymore because we just won the Super Bowl! Says:

What I don’t understand is who did the 49ers lose to receive so many picks?

  7. miken Says:

Man, we coulda had two 3rds for Bowles and Lefty… ugh.

  8. miken Says:

@Im not tired… got the 3rds for minorities becoming head coaches… Mcdaniel and Ryans and gm ran carthon

  9. Ufcguy32 Says:

We get fcked every year. Why are the 49ers getting that many picks. It’s insanity

  10. Jimbo Says:

Bucs are still 41 million over the salary cap. The hammer is coming down over the next few days. Rookies are cheap, but 5-7 rouders are worthless. Did you know over the last 20 years there are more starters that were undrafted free agents than drafted in the 5-6-7 rounds combined?

  11. Redeemer Says:

Those 6th and 7th rounders are basically UDFAs. I’d love to know the hit rate on anything below round 5. I’m not exactly excited about this draft. My faith in Lichts drafting abilities has been shaken in recent years. For instance, he took two TEs in a bad TE draft. Not to mention drafting a QB 64 overall that hardly dressed. If I’m Licht, I stand pat on the first three rounds, then start dealing for next years draft. Package those two fifths and get back into the third round next year.

  12. Redeemer Says:

Jimbo, you took the words out my mouth

  13. Steven007 Says:

Jimbo, I believe a lot of the late around draft picks will be used to move up in the draft particularly in the fourth round if they see a player they like. We never end up drafting at every spot we have slotted. Same thing this year.

  14. Goatfarmer Says:

That #252 should be good enough to get a rookie replacement for #2, who would then be #4 on the depth chart.

  15. Craig Says:

Cool, the offense might get a couple of picks after all.

  16. John in Georgia Says:

San Fran was awarded 3 – 3rd round picks for minority coaches getting 1 head coach position and 2 coordinator jobs. We would have gotten 3rd if Byron Leftwich had accepted the Jacksonville HC job last year.

  17. YucsBall Says:

Why no comp picks for hiring Bowles as HC and then Canalas as OC? Both are minorities.

  18. Marine Buc Says:

    Hallelujah!!!!!

The 2023 season has been saved!

    Super Bowl bound baby!

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Yeah…we’re trading up at some point.

  20. Redeemer Says:

John, I had no idea they gave comp picks for coaches. Guess it started in 2020. I don’t like it at all. Only for minority coaches? Sounds a lot like affirmative action, which makes no sense to me

    ___________

I don’t think Canales is the right kind of minority.

  22. Rod Munch Says:

The picks were for Cappa, OJ and Whitehead, offset by the Bucs signing Gage. If stupid Leftwich takes the Jags job, they’d have gotten another 3rd rounder – in addition to fielding an offense that wasn’t awful. What a POS Leftwich is.

In 2024, Bucs could/should be looking at a SF 2023 level of comp pick haul…(6).

  25. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Yucs

I never understood why the Bucs didn’t receive any compensation for hiring Bowles as our head coach…

He was a black defensive coordinator. He was the hired as a black head coach.

Therefore the Bucs should be receiving (2) 3rd round picks.

WTF? These ridiculous rules punish a team that promotes a successful black coach?

Sorry – but that doesn’t make any sense to me.

    I want my picks dammmmmmmittttt!!!!!

  26. Da Bucs Guy Says:

Bolwes was not hired. He is an interim coach after BA quit.

  27. stpetebucfan Says:

My dad was a bookie so I understand odds and all the whining and gnashing of teeth. Whenever my father took me to the track for “social gambling” and I picked favorites he’d chide me for letting the “chalk” get in my eyes. Favorites do not always win and dark horses sometimes do.

Just think about this interesting fact. The Bucs have been to two SB’s and WON them both.

The QB’s of those two teams were drafted in the 6th round and one in the now none existent NINTH round!!!

What are the odds that a team that struggled through much of it’s years finally won the big enchilda with QB’s drafted in the 6th and 9th rounds?

Just tryin’ to bring a little perspective to all of this.

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You get the comp pick when you lose a minority coordinator or coach to a HC at another team….you get nothing for promoting one.

Our Cappa lost pick was due to our acquisition of Gage.

We should get cap picks this year for LVD, Dean & perhaps Hicks….Edwards….

And….7th round picks can be hits….look at Purdy & Pacheco.

  29. Mike C Says:

Wow, these comp pics are great 👍🏿

  30. Mike Says:

Those extra picks may help Licht maneuver a bit better in the draft, so they are worth something to the Bucs for sure.

  31. Letsbucinggo Says:

A 1st round pick thats all the compensation that sucks I thought you got at least a 3rd for a 1st round pick but I guess better than nothing.

This is a subject Joe really doesn’t care about. Want to say the reason the Bucs got no compensation was Bowles was promoted from within. Joe could have sworn he read/heard that the Bucs received no compensation because Bowles was hired after the normal hiring window.

Hope that helps but Joe’s not losing sleep over it.

  34. MadMax Says:

    I’ll take it!

    Lets work with it

  35. MadMax Says:

Whats the very last pick of the draft? The one they call mr irrelevant….i want that pick number because trust me, I’ll find a way to make it work!

  36. MadMax Says:

A kicker who kicks past 50…alright Im on it.

  37. adam from ny Says:

def 5 picks to play around with from 175 on…

if licht basically stands pat in the early rounds, he can play around with the six back end picks to slide back up into the 4th…possibly

  38. LakelandSteve Says:

The Bucs are going to need warm bodies so expect them to keep those picks or even try to pick up a couple more. Out of those 9 picks is it too much to ask for the Bucs to get at least three starters?

  39. Dooley Says:

Six day 3 picks is kind of a slap in the face considering the situation out roster is in, but I totally expect several of those picks to be packaged for trades to move up into day 2, at best the top 100.

  40. Mike Johnson Says:

The Bucs have set Bowles up for failure. Hope he saves this years salary. He is going to need it.

Well, that’s only fair since they handed him a SB team last year.

  42. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Jason will mess it up again, so thanks NFL for giving this GM more opportunity to waste these pics on division 2 crap

  43. David Says:

Yucs2Bucs… why? He has drafted fantastic over the last several years and brought a Super Bowl to Tampa but suddenly he’s an idiot… SMH. You people are unreal.

Look at his record in the draft in the last seven years compared to most other teams. Much better. But you guys don’t look at that, you just automatically think there should be an all pro at every position in every draft. It’s like you watch SportsCenter highlights and think that’s what the player is. It’s pretty ridiculous.

  44. David Says:

    Doole

    Move up?????

They should trade their first round pick and move DOWN, pick up a first for next year and an extra second and/or third this year. The best thing they can do is load up on draft picks this year and next year and get rid of a lot of veteran players.
Clear the cap and keep building with youth while they figure out QB this year and potentially draft one next year if needed.

  45. westernbuc Says:

This is what great franchises do. They let other teams overpay their free agents. Licht built a great roster once. No reason he can’t do it again with the lessons of Brady

  46. garro Says:

LOL They shouldn’t call these compensatory picks.
    A fifth for Whitehead? Really?
