Jeff Darlington Led To Believe Jason Licht Views Kyle Trask As The Best QB In The NFC South

February 24th, 2023

New King of the (NFC) South?

Well, this is different.

The breadcrumbs are have been tossed. It began Wednesday when new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales, in his first public appearance in the Tampa Bay area, raved about Bucs quarterback Kyle Trask and the impressive tape he put together playing at the University of Florida.

Why not rave about his Bucs tape? Well, Canales had all of nine Trask pass attempts in the regular season to study.

Now it gets a little thicker.

It seems the intel Bucs officials gave the pride of Seminole High School, Jeff Darlington of BSPN, not only is the team planning to go to war with Trask as the starting quarterback for 2023, but it appears Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht believes Kyle Trask is the best quarterback in the NFC South.

That’s right, the whole damn division. A guy that has three completions to his name!

Joe isn’t sure if that says more about Trask or the division.

Video of Darlington’s report is below. And he clearly said he was talking to Bucs officials.

Right away a red flag went up for Joe. If Trask was this damn good, then why didn’t he beat out Blaine Gabbert as the immediate backup to Tom Brady? And then Joe looks at New Orleans and sees a quarterback there that once threw for 5,000 yards in a season — for the Bucs!

Joe will give Licht the benefit of the doubt and believe Licht was referring to 2023 rosters because the contract of Mr. Entertainment, Jameis Winston, is so bloated that he will get released by the slimy Saints.

It’s clear his coach, Dennis Allen, a typical meathead defensive coach, detests Jameis. So he is likely gone.

And it also seems the Bucs are moving on from Gabbert. You know, the same guy that Bucs Super Bowl-winning head coach Bruce Arians spoke loud and proud about roughly a year ago at the combine? The same guy who was Arians’ hand-picked starter if Brady didn’t return?

Joe is guessing from Darlington’s words that Licht isn’t a big fan of Matt Corral, Jacob Eason, Desmond Ridder or Felipe Franks, either.

A whole lot can change in a year, no?

  1. Usfbuc Says:

Just giving the guy confidence going into the off season. Maybe hoping he puts in more work so he is prepped. Bucs don’t have a ton of options. They will draft a guy who will compete for the job though.

  2. Steven007 Says:

I’m not going to lie, when I first saw that snapshot and started reading the article, I thought my, what a weird, unathletic looking guy. And then based on the post itself, I thought it was Jeff Darlington. Then I figured it out …

  3. Tye Says:

I think it was on Rich Eisen that Arians went on about Kyle was the guy and that they can win with him!

  4. SamuraiBuc Says:

  5. shak Says:

People keep stating Gabbert beat Trask out but ask yourself this, who do you think Tom wants to talk the game/strategy with DURING THE GAME more, a guy who hasn’t played ONE real nfl game or a guy who’s played in hundreds? Gabbert has the experience of sitting behind and game managing with many nfl starting QBs, he probably can read the game very well. He was basically another “coach,” Brady wasn’t going to trust trask over Gabbert. Ya’ll are so disingenuous when it comes to Gabbert vs. Trask… even if the guy never pans out. Gabbert has seen it all, he’s just not a good player, I’m talking to him about the game over Trask who had never played a lick at the time. Trask may end up being a dumpster fire but Gabbert over him wasn’t the sign. tom barely missed games in 20+ seasons, they knew they were going to suck if Gabbert had to play, they banked on Tom’s health, age didn’t factor in as you see he played every game. STOP WITH THE BS PEOPLE!

  6. Pewter Power Says:

Yea whatever if he feels a kicker needs competition, he’ll definitely have to earn that day one star and take it from whoever comes in

  7. shak Says:

Addition: Tom mainly talked to Gabbert during games. rarely talked to BL or anyone else! Anytime Tom was looking at the tablet he talked with Gabbert about what happened. look at all the game film, tom and gabb looked like best friends (if tom was calm enough to talk).

  8. Beeej Says:

To be fair, a LOT of Pats coaches in 2001 or so thought Brady was going somewhere

  9. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Tis post is very interesting to this old insomniac. I will have to revisit this article a couple of times and see what kind of additional comments it generated during the rest of this Friday in February.

    Go Bucs!

  10. JimbobBucsFan Says:

    This post …. … …. Good night y’all! 🥱 😴

  11. BoricuaBucfan Says:

Jason Licht is also THE WORST talent evaluator at the QB position in the history of the NFL so there’s that.

  12. captivajim Says:

he dosen’t have the cap room to do much else.. he wants to buy bowles a overpowering O-line for the run game..

don’t want to tire out bowles defense guys

trask can hand off & throw once -n-awhile to keep other team somewhat honest

    no biscuit-no more

The Lying Season. This is the old “vote of confidence” thing. Means about as much as a dead moth stuck to the dome light of your car, if your car had a dome light, if you had a car.

  14. HC Grover Says:

The goal posts have shifted. From the Super Bowl to the NFC South. next will be .500 record.

  15. Goatfarmer Says:

Trask is the Pillsbury Dough Boy! That Brady Effect really hit home with Dough Boy.

  16. Goatfarmer Says:

Bwaaahahahaaa – ButtBoy has his new late night poster for entertaining himself!

  17. Rand Says:

I really don’t know if he will be good just like I don’t know he will be that bad but one thing I do know and that is he at least deserves a shot after sitting for 2 seasons.

  18. Rand Says:

    shak

No sense be logical cause the idiots don’t comprehend past their hatefulness

  19. Winny Testaverde Says:

Licht declaring his suspect 2nd round pick is “the best around” as the Karate Kid song goes? So strange…

Certain people shouldn’t be on Brady’s manorexic diet. Trask appears to be one of these people.

  20. FlBoy84 Says:

See this as supporting and giving confidence to the only QB you have under contract for the ’23 season, while at the same time also signally to the agents of FA QB’s that the Bucs aren’t desperate and only reasonable contracts will be offered.

  21. DungyDance Says:

“And it also seems the Bucs are moving on from Gabbert.”

Where did you hear or get that from?

  22. Allbuccedup Says:

This the old build up how great Trask and the team is going to be this year to boost ticket sales.

  23. HC Grover Says:

    Sounds good.

  24. DJB Says:

Wow, he should be able to see the field well with those glasses. . .

  25. adam from ny Says:

  26. Joe in Michigan Says:

Trask needs glasses? That explains the Atlanta game then, he left his contacts at home.

  27. The Tampa Bay Truth Says:

Smoke Screen season is now officially here!

  28. Duane Says:

I like what Canales had to say about Trask:

“New Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales is excited to coach Trask.

“I really liked him coming out [of college],” Canales said Wednesday. “If you look at some of the skill position players he had there, Kyle Pitts, Kadarius Toney, who had the big return in the Super Bowl, Dameon Pierce. He was able to distribute, and the thing we’re going to help Kyle continue to build on here is to just be a point guard. Point guards don’t have to be the one that scores all the points. You just distribute. Play on time, get the ball out of your hands. Life’s better that way when you do that. You’ve got these bears chasing you. If you don’t like bears chasing you, then get rid of the ham.”

I think, for all the doubters out there, pay attention to Mr. Irrelevant 2022, who came in off the bench as third stringer, never played a snap in the NFL, and did a great job distributing the ball to his playmakers on the 49ers. Last pick of the last round of the draft.

Way too many media and fans believe in Super Men – guys who play hero ball and single handedly win championships for their teams, which is utter BS. Football is a team sport. Quarterbacks are important – if they don’t pass well or run well or distribute the ball well to quality skill players, the offense won’t do well. But any quarterback who can do the latter, and actually has quality skill players and effective O linemen surrounding him, can win games, division championships, and playoff games and even Super Bowls.

  29. In Trask We Trust Says:

A lot of you clearly didn’t watch Trask play for Florida. Go Gators!

  30. BucBoy Says:

JOE: “If Trask was this damn good, then why didn’t he beat out Blaine Gabbert as the immediate backup to Tom Brady?”

Easy. Brady was here to make runs at the Super Bowl and wanted a veteran backup in the event he had to miss playing time. And Brady got what Brady wanted.

Which is in line with what was stated when Trask was drafted, that he would sit and learn during the last 2 years of Brady’s contract.

Which is in line with what Bucs QB coach Clyde Christensen himself said, that Trask would not compete with Gabbert and Gabbert would be the #2.

It all lines up. Hard for the haters to accept, though.

  32. Joe in Michigan Says:

BucBoy: Sure, if you say so…A coach would never lie to protect or boost a player’s confidence (see Bowles and Devin White).

All the talk will subside, one way or the other, when Trask sinks or swims (from the looks of him from the picture, he looks like he’d sink like a lead anchor).

  33. BucBoy Says:

Feleipe Franks? Joe, you gotta be kidding me. He was horrible at Florida and in Atlanta he is 0-1, 1 INT, 1.0 QBR. LMAO.

  34. BucBoy Says:

Sorry about that, Meatchicken Joe, next time I’ll include you in the list of haters. 😛

Steven007 Says: “I’m not going to lie, when I first saw that snapshot and started reading the article, I thought my, what a weird, unathletic looking guy”

Joe is pissed at the news and so he searched for a bad photo. Look at the film of Trask doing sprints with his shirt off. Looks like a boxer. He’ll kick your ass.

  36. Jeff Says:

Might be time to move on from Light. His mental acuity is clearly failing.

  37. BucBoy Says:

Beeej Says: “To be fair, a LOT of Pats coaches in 2001 or so thought Brady was going somewhere.”

How so? In Brady’s first season of play he was 1-3 with a quarterback RTG of 42.4. Did you know that’s the exact same RTG – 42.4 – that Trask had in his first season of play? 😛

  38. Steven007 Says:

Boy, nothing about Trask says boxer. But I’m glad to know he looks more athletic than this picture. Certainly not looking to fight anybody, but I’m about his size and likely quite a bit stronger. Of course he has youth on a side, but old man strength is a thing.

  39. BucBoy Says:

That photo is clearly either photoshopped or its contours are distorted by the camera lens (common occurrence in smartphones) to make Trask’s midsection look wider than his shoulders, which is simply not the case. Joe found the photo he wanted. 😜

  40. Joe in Michigan Says:

Thanks, BucBoy! Let me guess, you were a big Mike Glennon supporter in his time as a Buc, right?

  41. SB~LV Says:

I stopped at “ led to believe “

  42. Architek Says:

Geez man this is embarrassing. Two regular season games and this….

  43. Mike Johnson Says:

    Bucs finish 6-11 with Trask.

  44. Chipbuc Says:

All I could think of when I read the headline was Hahahaha. Seriously we will be lucky to win 2 games all year if he starts. No experience at all and we are pining our hopes on him. Give me a break. It’s going to be a long embarrassing year if we go into this year counting on him to do anything. I hope I’m wrong but logic tells me otherwise.

  45. Couch Fan Says:

I think it was a mistake not to have Trask glued to The GOATs hip on gamedays but it is what it is. Trask was damn good at UF. Hopefully this is true and he gets a real shot to start this season and proves the FSU/Jameis fan boys wrong.

  46. ABucAway Says:

    Smoke, meet mirror.

  47. Mike C Says:

Which ever Joe posted this pic…… you are a @$$#0/3

  48. Christos Says:

I really think this is the right way to go to next year in the current situation.
We need to take care of the salary cap issues now and not move them to future years.
Focus on the draft and even make a couple trades to move down a little but only for future picks.
Start building a sustainable team for the next decade (roster is old).
You will see what we have in Trask and if he is not good then you give your attention to 2024 Draft which you can have more ammo if we acquire picks from this year draft.
I m not saying tank or loose on purpose but it is time to build a team with future and not a new 2 year plan. We are NOT a QB away

  49. BucBoy Says:

Wow all the FSU fans are pithed off and I mean PITHED OFF!

    😛

  51. Craig Says:

It is a real possibility that they are right.

We really don’t even know if Trask flashed during practice, he was under an invisibility cloak since he got here.

That is not his fault, it was poor coaching and the presence of Tom Brady, both of which have killed the careers of many a good, young QB.

  52. BucBoy Says:

[Claiming Joe is doctoring photos is begging to get banned. Attempting to post links is another. Might want to cool your heels Mr. Trask. Pretty sure you aren’t a first-time offender. — Joe.]

  53. BucBoy Says:

Here are two screenshots from Trask running the 40 at his pro day at UF in 2021, when he was heavier than he is now (the Bucs have shaved weight off him): postimg.cc/gallery/BKfW9yw

Here is a photo of Trask and Hainsey: imgur.com/a/W4wCm4j

Joe’s photo is clearly distorted. 🤔

  54. Brandon Says:

So Corrall is the Panthers QB, Ridder is Atlanta’s…. no idea who it is in New Orleans… but that’s not exactly the Mt Rushmore of NFC South QBs.

  55. BucBoy Says:

Joe, I never said YOU doctored the photo. I said the photo itself is distorted, which it clearly is, and that can be either inadvertently by a smartphone camera wide angle lens or intentionally by someone with photoshop. I never said YOU photoshopped it. As for links, I have posted them before and they went into moderation and were eventually posted with no problem. I’m not aware they are forbidden.

  56. Joe in Michigan Says:

BucBoy likes Trask’s physique! Enough said! 😂

  57. Steven007 Says:

Boy, don’t get so triggered by a picture and a few comments like my initial one. I’ve seen plenty of pictures of Trask and he looks just fine. Kind of reminds me of a slightly smaller roethlisberger. Ben also didn’t have the most impressive physique but certainly good enough to be a Hall of Fame QB. In fact in my one draft guide he is compared to Ben as a QB. We should get so lucky.

  58. Goatfarmer Says:

Mrs. Trask aka ButtBoy’s manic obsession with the Bucs 3rd string clipboard holder is a type of neurosis. Accusing the Joes of the things she accuses them of is proof.

Watching any QB when they played in college proves only how they played in college. The correlation between college performance and NFL performance is extremely weak. Watching Trashk stare down Toney and Pitts game after game proved that they were excellent players, (a) because they often got wide open, and (b) they would often beat double and triple coverage to bail Trashk out while he was forcing them the ball.

“NFL open” is measured in inches, not yards. You can measure Trashks processing speed with a sundial, and when pressured he will throw the horrible pick. The last time the Gators beat Georgia, he tried desperately to give the game to them in the second half, clonging three would-be pick sixes off of defenders chests. If those guys could catch at all, Trashk would be selling insurance right now. It’s’ ok, he will be soon enough.

  59. BucBoy Says:

Meatchicken Joe: “BucBoy likes Trask’s physique! Enough said!”

You DON’T like his physique! You like them beefier! 😛

  60. BucBoy Says:

Goatfarmer is in meltdown mode. LMAO.

  61. DBS Says:

Son of Trask is back under yet another name. Your last one didn’t fool anyone either.

  62. Goatfarmer Says:

ButtBoy reminds us of that Dardung-obsessed dude, ManicBuc or ManiacBuc or something. Strange how he hasn’t had anything to say about the little feller sice he was cut and then couldn’t make his way to the Browns roster.

ButtBoy, no one is melting down but you with your strange passion for the guy pictured above. Just remember, friction is the enemy when working out with his poster.

  63. stpetebucfan Says:

The fact that Gabbert was the primary backup is not a reflection on Trask.

As long as Brady was on the roster the Bucs would use an experienced QB to keep the season alive. As has been said it’s clear whose corner Brady was in and it’s Gabbert. Gabbert had a decent season on a horrid SF team under Tomsula when he replaced CK at QB.

Do we believe Brady is the kind of guy who would have appreciated competition from someone two decades younger. Did Bret Favre appreciate Aaron Rodgers?

Not suggesting that Trask is the next Rodgers, just believing that we don’t really know yet about Trask’s ability or lack thereof. How many reps did he get with the starters in practice?

  64. BucBoy Says:

Goathumper reminds us of that Jameis-obsessed dude, JameisDaMan. Oh … wait … that was Goathumper. 😛

  65. sasquatch Says:

    I think @BucBoy is Kyle Trask’s boyfriend.

Don’t suggest that Trask isn’t your franchise QB or Ms. Trask might come after you with a hot frying pan!

  66. Ed Says:

Trask can be a good passer and has talent when everything surrounding him is good, especially protection. Scouting reports are pretty universal that he has touch, can hit deep throws and sideline throws. They like his pump fakes.

The bad part about him that is going to be his weakness is his set up and release are not very good. He takes longer to get the ball out than most starting quarterbacks so unless they can coach some major improvements in mechanics and footwork, his arm and accuracy can’t make up for not being able to get the ball out on time.

He also ran a 5.1 40 time at the combine. So athletically, his ceiling is pretty low.

I’m pretty sure most of the top 10 college QB prospects are running 4.4-4.6 40 times and the guys I’ve watched highlights of all have fast releases.

Am I missing something about Trask?

  67. Tony1775 Says:

Selling us out due to Cap. Joe said it right about Trask being #3 behind Gabbert.

  68. BucBoy Says:

Ed Says: “Am I missing something about Trask?”

Yes, everything the Bucs coaches – Arians, Christensen, Canares, Licht – have been saying recently.

  69. BucBoy Says:

Tony1775 Says: “Joe said it right about Trask being #3 behind Gabbert.”

That’s why some guys run websites and others coach in the NFL.

  70. Goatfarmer Says:

ButtBoy, since you know so much, are you going to reveal where you coach, or are you just the loser who has one love in life and that’s the pudgy fellow pictured above? Here to support your Trask poster fantasies.

If you’re his mom it’s ok, you’ve raised a fine son. He just isn’t an NFL QB.

  71. Smooth Bay Rider Says:

I can’t believe the people on here that are so butthurt about Trask’s physique. Out of all of the QBs to win Superbowls throughout the years, how many of them are shredded with six packs, pecs, and guns?

  72. Smooth Bay Rider Says:

@Goatfarmer What is it that you have seen, that you don’t like about Trask ?

  73. Smooth Bay Rider Says:

Just a curious question for you guys . What the hell ever happened to NDog ?

  74. Ed Says:

BucBoy says: “everything the Bucs coaches- Arians, Christiansen, Canares, Licht- have been saying recently.

Arians endorsed Bowles and Leftwich, how did that turn out? Christiansen isn’t coaching the Bucs any more.

Licht picked Jameis Winston with number one pick. Lets see how he has done with his premium picks since ’15 draft-

2022: Logan Hall, Luke Goedke Rashadd White. Only White made contribution, Hall and Goedke did nothing.

2021: Joe Tyron/Shoyinka, Kyle Trask, Robert Hainsey. No production, no impact.

2020: Tristan Wirfts, Antonie Winfield, Keshawn Vaughn. Wirfs and Winfield are both very good players. Vaughn can’t get on the field.

2019: Devin White, Shawn Murphy Bunting, Jamel Dean. Dean is great, Bunting OK and White has gotten worse every year.

2018: Vita Vea, Ronald Jones, MJ Stewart. Vea on downside, Jones is a bust as was Stewart.

2017: OJ Howard, Justin Evans, Chris Godwin. Godwin a star, Howard a bust and Evan was good until he got hurt.

2016: Hargreaves, Spence, Aquavo. Bad, bad, bad. Horrible draft.

2015: Jameis Winston, Donovan Smith, Ali Marpet. Marpet was great, Winston was a bust and Smith is washed up now. He was bad, he was good and now he’s bad again.

Seems to me like Licht gets more of these premium draft picks wrong than right and when he misses, he misses very badly.

  75. MadMax Says:

WTF? Really? ….just smdh…3 wins with this guy at best….this cat aint ready and probably never will be….nice wasted 2nd dummy! Jeeze owners, you still alive or what?

  76. A40train Says:

Damn it Ricky I was high when I said that

  77. gotbbucs Says:

Why wasn’t Trask the backup to Brady? Probably because that’s not what Brady wanted. Brady surely wanted NFL experience sitting next to him between offensive series.
