Bucs Appear To Be Prepping For Significant Roster Move

September 6th, 2022

“Hey Glazer, pipe down and watch me operate.”

Clearing salary cap room on the Tuesday before opening day is always a cause for excitement at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters.

Joe already has advised Sage columnist Ira Kaufman that an emergency podcast may be in order.

ESPN super insider Adam Schefter took to Twitter this evening after apparently talking to his good buddy and Bucs salary cap guru Mike Greenberg. Schefter reported that Bucs guard Shaq Mason reworked his contract to clear a whopping $6 million under the Bucs’ 2022 cap.

There’s no way that’s a random move. The timing says the Bucs are trying to sign a player in a hurry.

Is it Rob Gronkowski? Is it a trade for a blue chip offensive lineman? Are the Bucs gearing up to make a Week 2 move if things look ugly on the line Sunday night? Maybe the Bears really do want to deal edge rusher beast Robert Quinn?

It’s gotta be Gronk! Go Bucs!

  2. Hunter Says:

    Isaiah Wynn Pats trade?

  3. Bucanero Says:

    OMG LFG!

  4. Rod Munch Says:

Last time they did this in 2020, I successfully called out the fact they were about to sign AB and everyone shot it down.

This time is less of a mystery, it’s probably Gronk.

Although, if they were going to try to trade for an expensive offensive lineman, they’d have to make up cap space somewhere. So I certainly wouldn’t rule that out.

I don’t think they’d make the move just to make it as they should have enough cap space to deal with injuries – around $6m or so.

  5. SteveK Says:

    It’s on like Gronky Kong?

Maybe even a package deal, Gronky Kong Suh? A man can dream!

  6. SteveK Says:

    Munch,

Fingers crossed, this would be epic!

  7. D-Rok Says:

At this point, who knows? Pee-Wee Herman? Maybe OJ Simpson (or Bart Simpson) has been staying in shape. Calvin Johnson, Randy Moss, Jerry Rice? Gronk? And by Gronk I mean Gronk Nagurski. LOL.

No matter. Can’t wait for Sunday. I think Bucs win this week.

  8. Dew Says:

Could the Bucs free up more cap space by releasing Kyle Rudolph?

  9. PassingThru Says:

That restructuring give the Bucs $7 million on team cap space.

    1. That wouldn’t be enough to absorb Wynn, not that it would make sense for either party. Wynn want LT money, it ain’t coming.

    2. I doubt Gronlnis coming. If he does though, it wl be later in the season. Licht could restructure someone like Donovan Smith later, when the time comes. This move seems to enable the absorption of a player via trade, presumably a starting LG.

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Julian Edelman & Robert Quinn for the win!!!

  11. Kentucky Buc Says:

Edleman and Gronk. Edleman is going to play left guard

    ——–

Not much, if Spotrac is correct, he’d count as $1.5m of dead cap, while freeing up $1.9m. So they’d free up only around $400k, but carry that cap hit.

We didn’t see much of Rudolph, so maybe he’s been fine in practice, but I know in games he looked very slow and sluggish, although with the Bucs he’d likely mostly be playing OJ’s role last year, meaning almost a full time blocker.

Edleman is going to play left guard

    ———–

I might try this in Madden, I think he’s still a FA in the game, then just change his position. I’m interested in how badly that would turn out. Watching him vs Vita in practice would be very entertaining.

  14. D-Rok Says:

In all seriousness, OK, Mason just got here. Why would he restructure now? He just signed a contract with Bucs, now he signs another one within a few months? Makes little sense, but what do I know?

  15. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Restructured Shaq Mason (Saved: $2,690,000)
    Restructured Ryan Succop (Saved: $1,315,000)
    Restructured Donovan Smith (Saved: $7,315,000)

    Cap Space:$16,435,624

  16. Buczilla Says:

I’m partying early this week if we sign Robert Quinn.

  17. Cometowin2 Says:

    Gronk or Lft Guard!

  18. Beeej Says:

What high profile guard/centers are out there?

  19. Cometowin2 Says:

    Gronk or lft guard!

  20. LUVMYBUCS Says:

If we acquire DE Robert Quinn – we can restructure his deal as well – Potential saving the Bucs $7.7M in cap space.

  21. Dew Says:

Thanks Rod. Maybe Tom & Gronk worked out together in the Bahamas???? Anything is possible.

    Both lines are weak

  27. SB~LV Says:

    Juicy gossip!
    Love it!
Looks like JL has won the game of chicken

  28. sasquatch Says:

Jeezus H. Kreiste… it’s not Gronk. As recently as last week, he was speaking unambiguously about his retirement. He’s done.

  29. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

None of us know who… but it will definitely be a who, sometime after this Sunday because the the salary of vested veteran signed after Week 1 is not guaranteed. Great pick up, Joes.

  30. sasquatch Says:

The Shaq restructure just gives them room for in-season roster churn, not enough to throw big money at anyone. Much ado about nada… most likely.

  31. Buc4evr Says:

    Suh.

  32. steele Says:

If this is for OL, good. Just make it a true top caliber guy, who is a particularly good pass blocker.

If it is for a top edge rusher, good. If for Suh or a true Suh replacement, good.

For Gronk? I’m less excited for that, because the other needs are far greater. And do you pay that much for one year of Gronk?

Given everything that’s happened, and judging from their moves/or lack of up until now, they are more likely to use whatever cap they clear to piecemeal it.
More semi-JAG depth. They show no signs of giving up on the idea of relying on Hainsey/Leverett, or JTS/Nassib or Logan Hall, in any way that “threatens” their total confidence in these guys.

  33. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Gotta be OL.

  34. PanthersSuck! Says:

Getting ready to lock up Kyle Trask till 2032

  35. steele Says:

Unfortunately the Dolphins grabbed Trey Flowers. The best OL (in free agency) is Ereck Flowers. Trent Brown and the Pats are not getting along. In addition to injury issues, Pats don’t like his effort level.

  36. Howard Cosell Says:

Either an Olineman or the Immortal Gronkowski.

Either one is fine with Howard

Hope it’s a Online every other position is pretty much in a good spot ….. A Robert Quinnn trade would take the defense to a new level

“He just signed a contract with Bucs, now he signs another one within a few months? Makes little sense, but what do I know“

It was the Brady hotline. 5 years and 2 Super Bowls with Brady in NE.

  40. Goatfarmer Says:

I’m sure the sentiment is accurate, whoever it is will sign after week 1 is over for the reasons mentioned. And in looking at the expendables to make roster space, wave goodbye to Rudolph and DardOn. Not for cap but for the roster limit game.

  41. Weston Says:

    Incoming trade?

  42. Ash Says:

Probably nobody maybe they just want the cap space incase of injuries during the season.

  43. BucsfanFred Says:

    Wynn is kinda fragile.

  44. BucsfanFred Says:

    I doubt it’s anything other than a IOL. Center/guard.

  45. BucsfanFred Says:

If they bring someone in who leaves? Scotty Miller?

  46. MadMax Says:

Well, Gronk can block and we’re gonna need that. Him or an O lineman is my guess.

  47. geno711 Says:

I may be in the minority. Not expecting a huge signing tomorrow.

  48. LakelandSteve Says:

It’s not going to be Gronk this early in the season. Besides $7 mill may not be enough to sign Gronk this early. Has to be an O-linemen

  49. Chris Tucker@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I read somewhere that we plan to go after Jared Goff in a trade with Detroit!
That blew my mind, but it sort of makes sense.
Goff does have the big arm required for our offense, and is a veteran with Super Bowl experience with the Rams.
We may have to give up our Number 1 pick next year to make this trade happen, according to the article, but because we will almost surely be at least a play off team, it will not be a high first round pick anyway, so who cares.
The article also asserts there will be no QB coming out of college next year as good as Goff, and we are gonna need a QB, because no way is Brady playing after this year.

  50. Cobraboy Says:

OR…it could be just insurance if the team needs to fill spots because of injury. I thought the team has less than $2 mil. cap space.

  51. Goatfarmer Says:

    Panther – nice one!

  52. Buc king Says:

We should have like 15mil now right?

I hear ya man. It seems like if it is GRONK… it will be later.
UNLESS….Gronk is developing that “Brady-like itch” to play.
    It could be.

I think there is still REALLY good chance at GRONK later this year.
But I am with ya Steve ,,,,, I bet this may be Quinn or OL.

  55. sasquatch Says:

I read we only had 1.5 before the Mason restructure. So now we have 7ish million for some flexibility during the season. I don’t really see a big signing coming. And it’s NOT Gronk if there is one. Jeezus, some of you just can’t let it go.

I saw that too Chris, but think it was total BS. I just don’t believe we would be focusing our energy right now on something like that, unless it was a “can’t pass on” player for our future. —- Unless I am COMPLETELY wrong on Jared Goff…. he is not that.

It’s not a crime, it’s just pathetic. Especially since there is ZERO evidence that he’s going to un-retire.

  59. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

sasquatch, I am being light-hearted with ya, man.
I highly doubt it is pathetic.

If he comes back, it will be awesome. If he doesn’t,,, awesome.

  63. Joshua porter Says:

If things really are bad with brady and his wife I can see gronk coming back to be with his BFF for the last ride and to keep brady grounded.

  64. George Says:

Hopefully making a move for an offensive lineman or two.

Gronk would be a luxury but not really a priority given the disarray on the offensive line

  65. Hodad Says:

Another site suggests the Bucs did this for operating expenses during the course of the season. This money will be used if a player goes down during the season, but not to bring anyone new in now. Don’t expect a signing. We will see. We still don’t know if Jensen is out for the year, because we don’t know what his injury is yet. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back by November, so maybe we don’t need to sign, or trade. What if Jensen’s injury is a petella, or knee cap dislocation? He could be back sooner than we think.

  66. Captain Tom Says:

Can anyone say Ali marpet unretirement

  67. Joe Says:

That ain’t happening. Probably take a year for him to bulk up and out back on all the weight he lost.

  68. TOMMY MORDUE Says:

  69. Letsbucinggo Says:

Could it be Ali Marpet coming back?

  73. AtticusFlinch Says:

Just days before Game 1? Gotta be a guy who knows the Bucs’ system well. A guy who can help shore up and calm down a very good O-line but one that hasn’t played their first game together. Also, a BFF type for a QB friend who’s feeling a bit down for an important start to the season. A friend who might also bring some much needed normalcy at home for Tom Brady’s young children.

Little Vivian’s “Uncle Gronky” to the rescue! Those who know how close the QB and his TE are, know that Gronk was hurtin for his Buddy after watching the QB trying to keep it together this past few weeks. Heck, if Gisele truly moved out of “the Compound”, I’m sure Tom would even invite Uncle Gronky and Camille to move in for awhile. The kids would benefit from a woman’s presence and Camille could showcase her “motherly skills” for the Big Lug.

Remember last Spring when Gronk in his Tampa barbershop told a reporter that he owes Tom payback for holding out before telling Gronk that he was coming back to play? This might be the payback but, truth be known, Gronk would come back quicker to help his friend in personal need (of course those words would never be used) than to help him and the Team nail down another Championship Season!

    My money’s on Uncle Gronky!!!!

  74. tampabayallday Says:

I sure hope you are joking. If I knew somebody who pulled this move in Madden franchise mode I’d have reservations about their overall intelligence to the point of disassociating from them.

Full disclosure, not an FSU homer or Gator hater. 100% don’t care about either program.
