Mike Evans Is Asked About The Next Bucs’ Starting QB, Doesn’t Mention Kyle Trask

February 11th, 2022

Rookie QB Kyle Trask

It’s the question pulsating through Buccaneers fandom: Who is taking over for Tom Brady?

Everyone wants to know, including the eventual new starting quarterback’s No. 1 target. Mike Evans was asked point blank about the starting QB situation on the PFT set at the Super Bowl this week.

“You’re guess is as good as mine,” Evans replied to co-host Mike Florio. “Don’t know right now. I wish I did, so we could start working out. Whoever it is, I hope it’s soon, at least in the next month or two, so I can, you know, starting working out together and getting that chemistry down.”

Asked if he thought the next Bucs starter was more likely on the roster now or off the roster, Evans paused and gave a political answer, “50-50,” he said.

Lots of Bucs fans don’t like reading between the lines, but Joe is not one of them. It’s very interesting that Evans, given two opportunities, made no mention of the Bucs’ 2021 second-round pick, former Gators quarterback Kyle Trask.

Why not?

  1. Marine Buc Says:

    D. Watson… or maybe Blaine Gabbert.

  2. Pewter Power Says:

Why not besides the fact that he’s been inactive the entire season like you keep mentioning? He’s smart enough to know there’s only one quarterback on the roster and there will be competition. Every roster has a quarterback who’s thrown a regular season pass meaning a veteran. No surprise he’s done nothing to get a vote of confidence from ME but nice try nothing to see here

  3. tampabuscsbro Says:

Well folks that’s it a WR that has nothing to do with personnel decisions doesn’t know what personnel decisions the FO will make gave a politically correct answer on who the starting QB will be.

This means Kyle Trask is bad obviously and we should have the worst QB in the NFL Justin Fields starting for us instead due to where he was drafted at.

  4. Adrnagy Says:

It will be weird if licht/ arians go with door 2 – j. Winston.

Fournette is gone. Bills/patriots/eagles will sign him.
Hope we sign rojo and mack.

  5. tampabuscsbro Says:

Well I seem to be in moderation Jail for talking about Kyle Trask…..it makes you think.

  6. Posey99 Says:

“Asked if he thought the next Bucs starter was more likely on the roster now or off the roster, Evans paused and gave a political answer, “50-50,” he said.”

There’s only one QB on our roster, Trask. Saying 50-50 is mentioning Trask, no?

  7. Adrnagy Says:

Betting odds list Jameis Winston as option to start for Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022

  8. Robert Says:

He just wants a QB who will sling it and get him 1k yards. I’d rather see Trask develop while protecting the ball. Moving to a run 1st offense with lot’s of underneath routes… and we know ME hates those.

  9. Buddhaboy19 Says:

What is ol nasty beard Andrew Luck up to , he’s only 32 years old. ?? Get him off of the couch Light show

  10. tampabuscsbro Says:

See you have to understand Trask was drafted 64th overall. If he was taken where Justin Fields was at 12 and seen as a top QB prospect he would be acceptable as a starter. Because as we know Draft stock is the most important thing there is.

  11. WalkdaPlank Says:

    “Doesn’t mention Kyle Trask”

Didn’t mention your golden boy Jimmy G either.

    It was a non-answer

  12. HC Grover Says:

    Bucco/Gabbert Bucco love dat Gabbert.

  13. Posey99 Says:

“I know Kyle is a really talented guy. He sat behind Tom, watched a lot, observed,” Evans said. “He’s a really talented guy. … He has really great arm talent, and he’s a student of the game, sitting back learning this year. Hopefully, he has a big leap next year.”

  14. Marine Buc Says:

There is a lot of “Brady to SF” chatter recently… Then today an article comes out about Joe Montana commenting that Trey Lance is not ready yet and should sit another year…

I wonder if we could see a trade brewing between Tampa and SF.

They have a decent QB they don’t want and we have a Qb that doesn’t want us…

It would be nice if we could get both Jimmy G and SF’s first round pick.

  15. PassingThru Says:

Montana tends to be reserved when it comes to making his thoughts known, so that proclamation was a surprise. It’s not a pro-Jimmy G vote, it’s more of a warning to the fan base and front office about Trey Lance. Joe is on the money though, Trey Lance has a very high ceiling, but he also has a very low floor. It was obvious he was too raw this season, to the point where the expectation Lance might be ready by the 2023 season at the earliest.

I don’t see this as a precursor to a trade. The message is just, “Trey Lance isn’t ready, you’re stuck Jimmy G.”

  16. Taylor Says:

    Byron Leftwich

  17. DarenGibo Says:

sure we can trade Brady to SF……. FOR LANCE!

  18. unbelievable Says:

I mean… did Evans ever even catch a ball from Trask in training camp / OTAs?

Prob forgot who he was lol

  19. catcard202 Says:

Marine, unscrew that jar….Lynch is not shipping Jimmy & a 1st to Tampa for 45yr old TB12 that’s already retired. It’s much more likely that if the Bucs FO dealt for Jimmy G…It would be Tampa’s 1st Rd pick – #27 – going to the 49ers.

Lynch is not stupid…He knows Tampa is in a pickle w/ TB12 gone.
Lynch also understands that if Licht is making that call to SF…The Bucs FO & Coaching Staff has no faith Trask can handle the job & understudying with TB12 for the entire 2021 season…(Meaning, SF will have the upper hand in any negotiation for Jimmy G….& they will likely have 3-4 other teams making that same call.)

  20. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Passing Thru

I hear what your saying but Jimmy G has already said goodbye to the fans. It has been made public that SF is moving on from Jimmy G…

If Trey Lance isn’t ready yet and Jimmy G has already said “goodbye”…Then who is going to be SF’s next starting QB?

Besides TB12 – Who else is their that will take SF to a SB?

TB12 just announced his retirement. The Bucs will be happy to get anything for him via trade…

  21. Nicholas Carlson Says:

Dear Glazers, Please do not sign another QB with multiple sexual misconduct allegations. We like to like our quarterback. Sincerely, Most Bucs Fans, I assume

  22. Marine Buc Says:

    @ catcard.

I don’t know what SF is willing to give us in trade for the rights to TB12…

If Lynch is smart he understands that he has a small window to win a SB. If TB12 can come in and give them a shot at one SB you are telling me that is not worth a late round #1 pick…

    Whatever…

  23. crazybucs_CL Says:

    @”…Doesn’t Mention Kyle Trask..”
    ——————–
    so what!!!!
he was mentioned ALL the TIMEs WJ, for five years. and we all know what a QB he was.
ME is very bias when the r.. , comes up. He made bad calls when JW was here, now he may as well making bad calls for Trask.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … ‘I wonder if we could see a trade brewing between Tampa and SF.’

So you think that the Bucs might actually trade the rights to Tom Brady away to San Fran? And you think that Brady could come in at San Fran and ‘give them a shot at one SB?

Oh how ludicrous. Ridiculous. To think that any QB, regardless of age, could come in and in ONE year lead his new team to a Super Bowl victory. Never happen. Never ever ever. Not a chance.

(OK, go ahead Marine Buc. I set the table for ya).

  25. PassingThru Says:

    @Marine Buc

Yeah, I admit there is a logic to what you’re saying, but if a team was going to use an unofficial spokesperson (former star athlete, sports journalist) to be their mouthpiece (which does happen), you’d think Joe Cool would at least talk up Jimmy G. It sounds more like a shrug than an endorsement.

  26. Gerinda Says:

Why not give the quarter back a try and see what can offer, if not get a good quarter back that can help the team?

  27. Defense Rules Says:

Mike Evans simply said there’s a 50-50 chance that Trask becomes the starting QB. Heaven forbid that ME13 give an honest opinion. MAYBE Mike knows Bucco Bruce a little better than we do? MAYBE he knows what’s going on behind the scenes a little better than we do?

All of us have essentially said the same thing, albeit in a little different way. It seems that the majority of JBFers over the past week or two aren’t opposed to COMPETITION at the QB position. Actually COMPETITION at all positions.

So IF there’s COMPETITION what would Kyle Trask’s chances be of winning that competition? 50-50 seem like pretty good odds to me, especially not knowing who’s involved in that competition. Gabbert? (a BA favorite perhaps?). Ryan Griffin? (might be brought back; never know). Or does Mike know of some other names that’ve been bantered around One Buc Palace? Yup, 50-50 seem like pretty good odds.

  28. sasquatch Says:

Well, it’s not necessarily terribly meaningful that he didn’t mention Trask as he probably didn’t take too many reps with the guy after preseason. I think Evans obviously wants to win and not take a step back with a guy who has yet to take a snap in an NFL game.

We gotta have competition at the position, and we’ll see who they bring in.

  29. SB Says:

    WOW JOE! Just wow!
I am disappointed. This is Crap Journalism. Trying to stir the pot when there is nothing in it.
You Really are after Trask Despite your many attempts to say you aren’t. I won’t believe you anymore that is for sure.
You are R E A C H I N G for any kind of reading now by trying to say what one player Didn’t say about another one.
This take Really did no good for your integrity. None.

  30. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

    LOL… I know right? What a crazy theory…

    Thanks – I needed a laugh.

  31. allbuccedup Says:

If they don’t want to try Trask after seeing how Mac Jones did they should trade him. I am pretty sure they could get a fourth round pick for him. But seeing how Jason Licht would not trade OJ and got a couple of descent offers I am sure Trask will just rot on the sidelines and become an unproven free agent.

  32. Joe Says:

This means Kyle Trask is bad obviously and we should have the worst QB in the NFL

It means Evans likely knows Arians didn’t return to coach a rebuild. And if you are staring a guy who never was active his rookie year, that is a rebuild.

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    50-50 chance…..that’ probably about right…..

Joe’s poll was about 50-50 & until FA & the draft are over….it will likely remain that way.

I knew where Joe stood yesterday when he made this statement:

“Well, if you are a free agent, why would you want to sign with a team that is in a rebuild? And if you are turning over your offense to a guy who couldn’t even beat out Ryan Griffin or Blaine Gabbert on the depth chart, then you are rebuilding.”

Ryan Griffin was on the practice squad…..hardly above Trask on the depth chart.

  34. allbuccedup Says:

Then why did Arians draft him. Seems like a wasted second round pick.

  35. Jerry Says:

All I got from that exchange is that he doesn’t have a clue what the Bucs are going to do.

  36. Craig Says:

All it means is that no one that matters has said squat since the season ended so abruptly.

Trask fell because he isn’t one of the new model, mobile QBs, and because the last thing seen was the Sugar Bowl. It isn’t his fault that the only other three talented players sat it out and he had to throw to high schoolers.

Fields is considered mobile, and you see how far his team went this season.

I think Trask is a better QB than Fields. He will throw down the field and is big and strong enough to shrug off a hit or six. He will be in competition this off-season. If he wins he will be the QB, if not he will be the no.2 guy, for awhile.

  37. Posey99 Says:

Joe, why are you ignoring Mike Evans comments on Kyle Trask that was published by NFL network today? Not only did Evans mention him in that article, but he touted him being a student of the game and his arm strength.

“It’s very interesting that Evans, given two opportunities, made no mention of the Bucs’ 2021 second-round pick, former Gators quarterback Kyle Trask.”

  38. allbuccedup Says:

Maybe McDaniels still has a soft spot for Jimmy G. and trades a 3rd round pick for him. Then since Carr is on his last year JL can trade the raiders our 1st round pick and Kyle Trask and a conditional 1st round pick in 2023 provided Carr resigns and stays in Tampa. Throw some s___ out there like Cowturd.

  39. Steven007 Says:

Next article: “Mike Evans is asked about the next Bucs starting quarterback by a different media outlet, conspicuously mentions Kyle Trask.”

  40. CalBucsFan Says:

Sounds like he’s given Trask a 50-50 chance Joe since he’s the ONLY QB on the roster at the moment.

  41. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘It means Evans likely knows Arians didn’t return to coach a rebuild. And if you are staring a guy who never was active his rookie year, that is a rebuild.’

Oh wow Joe, now you are R E A C H I N G like SB contends. The ONLY thing that’s happened since the 2021 season ended (for us) is that Tom Brady announced his retirement. None of us know YET how this 2022 Bucs’ team will flesh out.

Evans was asked about ONE position … QB. Right now (because nothing else has transpired) we have only ONE QB on our roster … Kyle Trask. IF he starts (and that according to ME13 is a 50-50 proposition), THAT action ALONE wouldn’t mean we were in the middle of a REBUILD. It could mean instead that BA took that path so that we could bring back (or acquire) enough OTHER starters in other position groups to make us competitive. YOUR definition of REBUILD appears to be VERY restrictive … even with having BA as our coach.

  42. Richard Dickson Says:

It’s not like he mentioned anyone else either….

  43. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Ask Mike…..”Would you like to catch some more passes from Johnny Football?”

  44. Mike Johnson Says:

I’m willing to bet..Licht is going after Jimmy G from the 9ers. Offering a 2nd and 3rd rd draft pick. Lynch will deal with him.

  45. Swampbuc Says:

Trashk might be able to start for a .500 team in the USFL. Evans knows it.

  46. tampabuscsbro Says:

Pretty much Defense Rules, I was wondering why Joe was doing it and got put in M#$der@tion for it.

  47. Deano Says:

Been a bucs fan since Doug Williams, Leroy Selmon, James Wilder, Ricky Bell, been a Gator fan since Galen Hall…like I said before no Brady then it’s Kyle Trask!
And yes I remember the paper bags. I think he’s going to surprise alot of people

  48. Deano Says:

    And defense rules

  49. NYbucsfan Says:

    @ Joe,

I know Kyle is a really talented guy. He sat behind Tom, watched a lot, observed,” Evans said. “He’s a really talented guy. … He has really great arm talent, and he’s a student of the game, sitting back learning this year. Hopefully, he has a big leap next year. That’s a quote from Mike Evans from an interview he just did with nfl.com.

It’s not obvious. We don’t have any reliable information one way or the other.

  52. Tom Sumner Says:

    Russ

  53. Rod Munch Says:

Trask hasn’t even practiced with Evans — I mean why would a 4th string QB being practicing with the starters?

  54. Swampbuc Says:

The reliable information on Trashk comes from watching him play. He was throing to human joystick Kadareus Toney and pro-nbowl rookie TE Kyle Pitts, along with a plethora of other talent. Those guys were responsible for more of his success than he was. Trashk stares down his primary and throws it there even if he’s covered. In the case of those two, a lot of time they made plays against inferior talent. That’s not gonna happen in the NFL. He also has a latent case of Jameisitis in there, throwing horrible picks at the wrong time.

I know there are Gator fans all excited for him. I am a Gator, suffered through the Doug Dickie years.

Trashk is Danny Wuerfful with a stronger arm but lacking the brains.

  55. steele Says:

Why did they draft Trask in rd 2? Because the 2021 was an unusually strong draft with a lot of QBs, that would be followed in 2022 and 2023 with weak QB drafts. Trask was believed to be the best remaining of the top bunch, followed by a steep dropoff in talent after rd 2, so it made sense to take him.

That doesn’t necessarily mean they expect(ed) him to be an instant starter or a franchise QB. It’s still the case now. He could be starter, or backup, or a trade chip.

  56. David Says:

    Joe,

    Bad take. Bad article/useless.

  57. Bosch Says:

Evans didn’t want to give answers that would be picked apart and misinterpreted. Don’t blame him. It’s that simple.

  58. Swampbuc Says:

Has Todd’s Bowel even made a public appearance since the monumental humiliation when the team was on the cusp of the greatest comeback in history?

I mean, it was so heinous, negligence charges should be filed.

  59. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

Need to change the name to “Joe click bait”! I bet I know which “Joe” this is! Just to clarify,… Evans didn’t name Anyone! He gave a non answer as he should! Seriously, you guys can do better.

  60. Hodad Says:

He didn’t mention Trask because he knows Gabbert will start.

  61. Rod Munch Says:

    steele Says:

Why did they draft Trask in rd 2? Because the 2021 was an unusually strong draft with a lot of QBs

    ———-

Trask was drafted, basically in the 3rd round, because he doesn’t throw an NFL ball with NFL velocity and is very much a project player since you have to reteach him how to throw. If his college tape didn’t look like Danny Wuerffel, he’d have been a top 10 pick.

  62. Swampbuc Says:

Goobert 2022, whole new coaching staff and roster in 2023.

    I’m afraid it’s possible.

Bingo. Joe is part of the ESPN-driven sports media that wants the quarterback position to look like the cornerback position. Hence his love for proven failures like Jameis Winston and now Justin Fields.

Hence his love for proven failures like Jameis Winston and now Justin Fields.

    ———-

LOL! One of the very few QBs to ever throw for 5000 yards, who lead the league in passing and was 2nd in TDs, who had his team 3rd and 2nd in scoring, when the team had never finished inside the top 10… that’s a failure?

Also Fields is a rookie and he’s a failure? He hasn’t even came close to starting a full season.

  66. 🏄‍♂️ dude Says:

    @Rod Munch:

Jameis (Round 1 Pick 1) had 33 TDs and 30 INTs his last season with the Bucs. FAIL!

Fields (Round 1 Pick 11) in 12 games with the Bears this season had 7 TDs, 10 INTs, and 36 SACKS! 36 F’N SACKS! For Mister Mobility! LOLOL! FAIL!

  67. Swampbuc Says:

Has anyone checked the Bowels of Todd for a herniated cerebrum? Maybe the dude had a stroke and no one knows about it. I mean, he hasn’t even spoken publicly since the shocking humiliation against the Rams.

It’s almost the only plausible explanation for the worst defensive game plan, execution and play calling in NFL history.

If anyone sees Bowels drooling, call an ambulance. Since we’re having him as DC for another year, time for him to get checked out.
