Richard Sherman Has Bigger Impact Than Expected

December 17th, 2021

Todd Bowles explains value.

It’s clear that veteran corner Richard Sherman is not what he once was, which was a Hall of Fame corner.

Unlike Tom Brady, Sherman hasn’t been as fortunate to ward off Father Time. Still, who would you rather have on the field in a pinch, Sherman or Ross Cockrell?

One reason the Bucs signed Sherman is that he is a damn smart ballplayer. And the Bucs were hoping those smarts would rub off on Bucs defensive backs, especially the young guys.

Yesterday, Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles said that element of Sherman’s game has been a much bigger impact than expected.

“Probably twice as much,” Bowles said yesterday. “He has a lot of valuable experience from a technique standpoint and how to read things and splits and everything else going on for the younger guys in the room. And, teaching them how to watch film with the coaches. He’s been invaluable in the meeting room.”

It said something to Joe about Sherman when cornerbacks coach Kevin Ross had to sit out a game because of The Sickness, then-injured Sherman served as an assistant coach that week and during a game.

For Joe to know the Sherman signing was smart will be if he tips off a teammate with some knowledge and that teammate uses it to make makes a monster play to help the Bucs win a playoff game.

Was always a fan of this move just for the experience he can help with out youngbucs.. bucs have been doing that for years and is maybe the only consistently positive move they did throughout the lost decade was bring in a vet to help young players grow (Vincent Jackson, Revis, shady, keeping Lavigne, etc)

  2. PSL Bob Says:

That’s terrific. Seems like we have a lot of veteran players that are willing to coach up the young guys. A lot of camaraderie on this team, and not a lot, if any, of the me, me, me types.

  3. Beeej Says:

Sherm SAYS he doesn’t wanna be a coach…pity. Like the GOAT, he seems to be really good at it

  4. Tackleblockwin Says:

Players in the NFL often say, “ I just want to do whatever helps the team win”. If I ever hear Sherman say those words I will believe him 100%. He is pretty selfless.

  6. SufferingSince76 Says:

Sherman beats any of the other stiffs they have to substitute back there.

  7. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

Having a veteran presence in the locker room is what we have been needing for awhile for such a young secondary group especially a guy that’s been there and won it all. Smart move to have him on the team in any form.

  8. Listnfrmafar Says:

Vet players teaching younger players how to watch film? I thought this was a coaches job. Please Lord, if Bucs make it to the SB don’t make the other team Patriots, Belichick & McDaniels will embarrass BA and expose him for the fraud he is.

  9. SufferingSince76 Says:

SB winning coach is a fraud? Uh huh.

    lolololol

You sure are consistent List, just taking your shots at the staff again. Lol New day and new jabs. lololololol

    GO BUCS!!!!

  13. Bucsfanman Says:

    BA a “Fraud”?! Right.

Anyways! I love stories like these where vets impart their wisdom both on and off the field. Sherman is a smart player. The young guys are wise to learn from him.

  14. Kev@Inverness Says:

Listnfrmafar, the fraud here is you, posing as a Buc fan. You probably wear a thong that’s black and gold with a cute #3 on the crotch.

  15. Listnfrmafar Says:

Kev, the thong was just gold, the black didn’t come until after I wore it. On the contrary I am a huge Bucs PLAYER fan, the coaching staff not so much. Just my opinion I share you all have your own.

  16. Tampabaybucfsn Says:

    Good to have Sherman

  17. Rayjay1122 Says:

One of the better performances by the secondary was the game that Sherman filled in as assistant coach. This is an example of a team first guy who is doing his part to win a championship here.

  18. matthew veal Says:

I used to think Joe was a Homer so he could get stories. By God I’m now a believer. I’m happy with Sherman cause Joe does call em solid.

Plus m y eyes agree. Nice interception a while back too

  19. SB Says:

There is Listn again doing his best to be a better pos troll than Ndog.
LOL 2 time Coach of the Year (maybe 3) and he is a fraud.
Stick to synchronized swimming you moron.

  20. Jordan Says:

Might be true, Dean and SMB both look a lot better this year. Carlton Davis seems to just be getting his legs and mind truly game ready so we’ll see if he can ascend to being a true lockdown corner for playoffs.

Sherman’s play has been pretty bad for sure, hopefully this isn’t just a rationalization of the signing. I’m not sure he can even play safety. He hasn’t even been healthy enough to really stay or get into game shape. All of his injuries have been lower body injuries that would make it almost impossible to maintain the proper cardio and ramp up needed for games.

  21. Kiko Says:

He made a pretty good read on the QB then made a play on the ball against the Bills at Safety. That wasn’t being in the right place at the right time. When you watch the play he read the QB to that spot for the pick. So he is already picking the safety position quickly. Maybe he made an impact there.

  22. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

He was a great vet signing. Has Ronde Barber smarts & has helped the young lads & you know that he is happy to be on a kick ass team!!!

  23. BT-Tampa Says:

As I recall, the game he subbed as assistant coach had good secondary play. There was a calmness and confidence that could be perceived even through the television.

  24. ModHairKen Says:

I hope he is happy here. It’s been great having him on the team. The pick last week was the start of something big.

  25. Listnfrmafar Says:

SB, stop living in the past, can you please tell me what this man has done other than fondle Brady to the point where he agreed to come to Tampa? All I keep getting from this guy is, he hands off because players and coaches know what to do, doesn’t like or attend meetings, same for his assistants, doesn’t believe coaches need to stay late, constantly throws his players under the bus but never calls out any individual coach and his latest brain storm of making Wednesdays walk throughs while his D leads the league in missed tackles and who knows how many backups in the secondary. I’m begging you prove me wrong so I can feel better about this guy and I don’t want to hear he won last years SB because Brady changed the dynamic of this team NOT BA. No Brady and another 7 wins at best.

  26. Hodad Says:

Joe, I sat next to the smartest kid in class, and his smart’s never rubbed off on me.

  27. SB Says:

Then it may be ok to sit next to Listn Hodad.

    LOLOLOLOL

Yeah those pesky little FACTS like……
BA is the CURRENT SUPER BOWL WINNING HEAD COACH. FACT, not pissin and moaning hot air, like the dribble that you post.

So list you live in the NE, how long did it take you to alienate all the Pats fans on their Blogs lol lol before you came to JBF.
Maybe you still are posting your whining on Pats blogs lol lol

Then you find JBF after Brady comes to the Bucs and you just spew your laughable daily pissin and moaning lol.

Like SB said, List just stick to synchronized swimming lol

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

Or they could have just hired another cornerbacks coach.

Sherman was playing CB on the interception in the Bills game.

  31. Redsox/Bucs1 Says:

The coaching stuff is ok I guess. But I’m still interested in seeing if Sherman can make an impact as a player. I don’t think he’s been healthy long enough to tell if he has anything left. Maybe with Dean out he’ll get more time at CB this week. Heck, he only played a handful of plays at CB last week and made an Int.

  32. Listnfrmafar Says:

August, Brady is the Bucs, BA was a 7-9 loser and like I said in a previous quote, when Brady leaves for the Bucs it will be like the second coming of Hiroshima. Then you and your buddy SB can go back to box seat prices at $75 for a pair.

  33. August 1976 Buc Says:

lol Hey List stick to being a swimming Coach lol lol
So they cannot stand you on the Pats blogs either right lol
