“They Didn’t Have To Do That”

February 1st, 2021

Humble Bucs superstar receiver Mike Evans appeared to have fun during his 45-minute virtual news conference today, fielding all kinds of questions in the wacky Super Bowl Media Day tradition.

For example, Evans was asked about what he likes most about Canadians.

But there were football questions, too, and some came from Joe. (It’s unclear why when Joe first began talking, Evans said, “I know that voice.”)

Joe asked Evans to reflect on what it meant to him that Bucs coaches went out of their way late this season to ensure he hit the 1,000-yard receiving mark, setting a new NFL record as the first to bust the 1,000-yard plateau in each of his first seven NFL seasons.,

“The coaching staff did a great job at the end of the season trying to get me that record. I’m very appreciative of that. They didn’t have to do that,” Evans said. “You know, I’m fine with winning and getting to moments like this. But, you know, having that record and being the first in NFL history means a lot. I’m appreciative of Tom [Brady] and the coaching staff doing that.”

Joe’s so glad the Bucs delivered Evans the opportunity. It was the right thing to do for a guy who grinded through a 16-game season with multiple injuries. On Dec. 26 in Detroit, Brady pounded Evans with 12 targets and he came away with 181 yards and two touchdowns.

Joe’s also glad the Hall of Fame rightfully came calling.

Go Big Mike! You deserved that record 🙂

  2. ATLBucsFan Says:

Thanks for the photo Joe. Might never get to the Hall of Fame and don’t use Twitter so thanks for adding it! ME is a beast. So lucky we have him on our team. Looking forward to his catches in the Super Bowl!

  3. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

Good stuff…class act from the coaching staff and Brady. Now…about RoJo….

  4. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Off topic and I know it’s early but the weather calls for rain on Sunday. That should benefit our Bucs with our solid run defense and ability to run the ball.

Congratulations Mike – you are a Beast!

Also – isn’t it nice to have brought in a QB and go to the SB, instead of our history of the exact opposite?

  5. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

He follows in the footsteps of Lee Roy Selmon and Derrick Brooks as a HOFer on the field and HOfer in the community of Tampa, super lucky to have ME13 in the tampa bay area hopefully for years after his career is over

  6. Beeej Says:

I wish we could have gotten Rojo that last 22 yards also

  7. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Love ya, Mike! Have a whole lotta fun on Sunday. While you are at it have the game of your career (so far)!

    Go Bucs!

  8. TampaTown Says:

Congratulations Mike! You did deserve the record! Now can we get a Brady to Gronk TD to break another NFL record? Please?

It would have been cool if those alt jersey’s were our SB jersey’s.

But, man is it refreshing to hear a young stud WR be so damn humble. We are truly lucky we actually have 2 and possibly more in Miller and Johnson. Our WR room is mind boggling. So much talent yet grounded.

I suspect a good dose of Gronk or Brate in this matchup. We need to stretch the field and dominate the middle and take a few shots deep when the opportunity comes.

If our defense shows up, this is going to be a clinic. I want to eat a dub!

I know we should not talk about anything but the Super Bowl… But next year looks so promising to me. A healthy in shape Gronkowski, a healthy Evans, Vaughn and Rojo and the receivers having a full training camp with Brady, Another year of the secondary getting better…
They have a chance to be historic next year.
I foresee Brown and Fournette moving on, but that’s it.

  11. Buddhaboy 19 Says:

And think of the QBs he’s had to get that record from, amazing.

  12. BuccaneerButters Says:

So proud of him. He’s part of the reason I became a Bucs fan. He’s a hard working, good guy. Proud to rock his jersey.

  13. gp Says:

I disagree. They did need to do that for him. One of the most unselfish, team players I’ve ever seen in any professional sport. Almost unthinkable.
    You earned it Mike.

  14. CalBucsFan Says:

That was awesome they did that for Mike, he’s been a beacon of hope of what can be ever since he came to Tampa and deserves the record.

However, I sure wish RJ could have gotten 1,000 yards for the year too. He’s come a long way since his first 2-year and really thought he too should have been rewarded. I guess once he get’s a SB ring, he’ll be just fine with it though!

    Let’s Go Bucs!

  15. ModHairKen Says:

Mike Evans is a Man’s Man. A rarity in the prima donna world of WRs.

If he was a DE, he’d have chewed up and spit out Strahan’s fake news record.

If he was a RB, he’d be up there with Henry.

  16. #1bucsfan Says:

Come on Bucs let’s get ME13, LVD and the rest of Tampa’s fans a super bowl let’s go

  17. Anonymous Says:

Hopefully the Bucs become members of the ” FIRST AND ONLY” club……..the 1st and only team not to just host a Superbowl in their own stadium but to win it too! That’ll wipe out the 0-26 club.
