Ian Beckles: Quit Disrespecting Tom Brady

February 13th, 2021

GOAT talk.

Former Bucs guard and current popular local sports radio personality Ian Beckles said the Bucs winning the Super Bowl ends a football argument.

You see, with the beatdown of the Chiefs to become champions of the world, park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking Bucs Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady is the GOAT. End of discussion.

To suggest anything otherwise is disrespecting Brady, Beckles said on his podcast, “In the Trenches.”

“People with this GOAT thing, let’s stop it,” Beckles said. “It’s over. Done. It’s over with and has nothing to do with a Tom Brady fan. Tom Brady left his team, went to the losingest team in sports history and beat — people were saying Patrick Mahomes was the next GOAT. Shame on you for saying he is going to be the next GOAT.

“First of all. That doesn’t happen. You are not the GOAT until you are the GOAT. There’s one GOAT. … Let’s not talk about a future GOAT. That’s disrespectful. … [The NFL] should allow Brady to wear “GOAT” on the back of his jersey next year.”

Other thoughts Beckles had watching the Bucs capture their second Super Bowl in franchise history:

* “Nobody said the Buccaneers were substantially better than Kansas City. Nobody said were going to blow out the Chiefs,” Beckles said. “I heard the other end. I heard people say the Chiefs were going to blow the Bucs out. Nobody saw this coming.”

* On trench warfare:

“[The Bucs] beat the crap out of the Chiefs on both sides of the ball. That battle was not close [in the trenches].”

* On Brady being capable of another Super Bowl win with the Bucs:

“Tom Brady is going to be 44 next year and I don’t think it matters any more. I don’t think I have ever said that in sports before. I’m not sure it matters. … He went through [Drew] Brees, [Aaron] Rodgers and [Pat] Mahomes. He is 43 and beat Mahomes right in his prime. … There is no reason why this team falls off next year. As long as Tom Brady is healthy and I don’t know why the hell he wouldn’t be.”

* On how the Bucs’ coaching staff outsmarted Andy Reid and his assistants:

“The gameplan in general was gorgeous. [The Chiefs] got outcoached. … On the offensive side, 70 percent of the passes came from play-action. That’s what you want! That’s what you want. You want your offensive line to be aggressive.”

* On the running game:

“[Leonard] Fournette and RoJo, I have never really been a huge fan of their ability to run — until now. Fournette has been different in the playoffs, I don’t know what happened to him unless he is thinking about next year’s contract or what the situation is but he looked like that guy in the playoffs.”

* Two players who got hot in the playoffs carried the Bucs:

“Shaq Barrett was kind of quiet this year compared to last year. In the playoffs he was a monster. Devin White, who might be my favorite player right now, he came right out and said [the Chiefs] are gimmicky. And they are somewhat. But that gimmick is a Son of Gun to stop.”

* On how the Bucs were the backstreet bully to the Chiefs:

“[The Bucs defense] thought they would just ball up their fist and punch [the Chiefs] in the mouth and that’s just what they did.”

* Beckles noted in some respects, this championship seemed to come from nowhere.

“It’s crazy. I think a lot of Buccaneers fans are shaking their head. ‘What just happened?'”

  1. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Sean Peyton actually predicted victory for us, against the Chiefs.
When interviewed he said we were the best team in football right now, who just went through 3 division champions, on the road!
I don’t think the Chiefs got outcoached as much as they got outplayed!
They sure were missing their 2 starting tackles, but I still think we would have beat them, had they had their starters.
I see no reason we can’t repeat next year, if we can keep some key players.

  2. Brandon Says:

How could one not be impressed by Rojo? 970-something yards in the regular season and 5.1 yards per carry. Even injured in the postseason he was easily sliding out of and breaking tackles and turning three yard gains into 13. The guy is an absolute monster. A full off-season with Brady and the guy will come back much better in his routes and hands. Rojo has drastically improved every season.

  3. JA Says:

With politics, the pandemic and the Bucs as world champs, these past 12 months have been unmatched for the possible being extrapolated from the impossible. Thought I’d seen it all until I found myself agreeing with everything Ian Beckles said in this post.
In its totality, both good and bad, what a year!

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Haters R Gonna hate

……..I know I did for awhile and I’ll gladly eat crow all day long

  5. Razor Ramone Says:

I remember when Chuckie first got here. He did a radio show once a week with Beckles, it didn’t last long or go well.

  6. Cobraboy Says:

    Now ^^^THAT^^^ is hilarious.

I may have to buy a 12 jersey with GOAT on the name plate.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Celebrating our Anniversary in Cabo….wearing Buc gear and getting lots of Congrats!!!

  8. Bird Says:

    Cobraboy

On the other end, Ndog just bought a jamies saints jersey with “SCROAT-um” on the back

I am one of those fans, I admit.

I thought they might get better as the season went on, but with that mid-season slump, it looked like it was gonna take some time for all the new pieces to gel, especially the QB and DBs.

After the break and the win streak started, they looked much better…but I was not yet a believer. Too much inconsistency.

Earning the WC was no big deal, and it would not have surprised me with a one-and-done against a top D, and my concern was what psychological damage could be done.

I expected them to lose against the Saints. And Green Bay. But I saw something in that Green Bay game that made me think winning the SB was not a pipe dream: they flat DOMINATED the LoS against outstanding O & D lines.

I watched the SB for the third time. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen trenches dominated as the Bucs did to KC.

IMO, no matter what, it’s the O & D lines, and LB’s that need to be kept together, specifically Suh, Barrett, and David.

I am a huge fan of Godwin, Fournette, Gronk, Brate and Brown, but fancy-pants skill guys are more easily replaced than Big Uglies are…especially with the GOAT as Asst. GM-Pro Personnel…

  10. Bird Says:

    Cobraboy

    You Cant include gronk there
That dude is one of the big uglies
That guy is better blocker than a lot of offensive lineman in nfl
He was blocking defensive ends all year. Some real good d ends too

We need blocking for run game too especially if godwin goes
Godwin was physical blocker as well as receiver
I think gronk deal was 9.25

He may play for 8 this year (if brady says so)

  11. ModHairKen Says:

Another boring spiel by an average former player who got drunk and abused a horse

  12. 1sparkybuc Says:

    The Bucs are world champs

  13. Karma Says:

    Spot on Cobraboy!

Trench warfare makes the DB’s and WR’s look good.

  14. Wayne PEREZ Says:

Still can’t believe we are the champs there is only one goat and he is a buccaneer!!!

  15. sauron's eye Says:

Tom Brady is the GOAT of all sports. Don’t even bring up basketball. there is absolutely no parity there, you buy your team. Football is the most balanced team sport competition in the world and Brady has ruled it.

  16. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

“First of all. That doesn’t happen. You are not the GOAT until you are the GOAT. There’s one GOAT. … Let’s not talk about a future GOAT. That’s disrespectful. … [The NFL] should allow Brady to wear “GOAT” on the back of his jersey next year.”

All of this GOAT talk reminds me of a certain trip to the Hoover dam that Griswold and Co., took

“I am your dam guide, Arnie, please don’t wander off the dam tour and please take all the dam pictures you want. Now are there any dam questions?
Yeah, where can I get some damn bait?”

  17. FanO’Bucs Says:

    @Ja

    LOL

    Well done

  18. Jerry Says:

Chiefs fans are still complaining about the game being rigged. Mahomes’ mother even complained about the refs.

The thing is that if it were rigged, they’d rig it the other way. The national media already had spent two weeks setting the narrative for Mahomes to take over the GOAT role.

  19. windbaggery Says:

It did come out of nowhere. When the playoffs started, I saw them getting past Washington and that’s it… And frankly, they struggled a bit to win that one. Beating the Saints, Packers, and Chiefs was the most unlikely run I could’ve imagined.

  20. August 1976 Buc Says:

Best thing about the picture is Gruden wearing a Hugh Green jersey. Favorite player back in the early 80’s. Keep Defensive front 7 intact. They can add or subtract easier with the offensive players. Without the Defence stepping up, they would not be World Champions. GO BUCS!!!!!!!

  21. NDOG is an idiot Says:

Can’t wait for our Defense to beat the Crap out of JayMiss!!! Only thing JayMiss will be eating is NDog!!

  22. Blue Coffee Says:

J Winston will not be the starter for NOrlean for the entire next year. They are not patient with turn overs. After a few, JW will be replaced, probably by Hill. A back-up? Yes. JW will stay for trick plays, and back up role.
He is good, but the expectations in NO are through the roof. They will not stand for a second place in their division, and yet, without Brees, and with Brady in the division, that’s exactly what will happen next year. Too bad for JW, because well coached in the beginning in the NFL perhaps he could have done well. But when you get used to not be careful with the football it’s almost impossible to change that after a while. Arian was not able to change that.

I would be happy to be wrong, and see JW have success in the futur because I had so much hopes for him with us,… and success I still hope he will have,… but not when he is a rival in our division! To see my bucs win a SB was too much fun! Ha, ha ha,…
    GO BUCS!

  23. Sumosam Says:

The Chiefs did not lose because of the calls on the field. They lost because as Ian beckles noted, they were beat on both sides of line of scrimmage. That’s the facts Jack.

  24. John rodgers Says:

IF THE BUCS LOSE A RECIEVER, HOW ABOUT GOING FOR JULIUS EDELMan?

  25. David Says:

LoL. At least for one game, a throwback jersey night or something, let Brady wear G.O.A.T. on the back of his jersey.
    LOL
