Todd Bowles Talks Unsung Bucs

October 1st, 2020

There are so many shining bright lights across the Bucs defense, it’s easy to get overlooked.

Shaq Barrett, Jason Pierre-Paul, NFC Defensive Player of the Month Lavonte David, Ndamukong Suh, NFL tackles leader Devin White and NFC Defensive Rookie of the Month Antoine Winfield, Jr. come to mind. And that’s more than half the starting defense.

And if you like penalties, cornerback Carlton Davis has the NFL lead.

Today, defensive coordinator Todd Bowles spoke to Joe and virtually-assembled media and named a couple of his men that he considers unsung: Jordan Whitehead and Will Gholston.

“I think Jordan’s a very tough player,” Bowles said. “He’s probably one of the hardest working guys we have over there. He’s a little unsung along with [Will] Gholston. But Jordan’s tough. He plays down low very well. We know he can tackle, he’s going to hit anything that moves. And he’s a very bright player. So we’re allowed to move him around some and put him in some different situations.”

Defensively, the Bucs sure are getting contributions across the board. It’s not just one big playmaker in each game. Joe’s always been a big Whitehead fan (thank you, Dirk Koetter) and Gholston certainly is having a revival in his eighth season.

Man we need Mount Vea mentioned too. He’s getting better since week 1.
    Go Bucs

Will gohlston extra weight he put on is working great. He is a bad dude! Rock solid.

I love how the first comment on the linked article is someone mad we didnt draft Shaquem Griffin, who didnt make the final roster cut in Seattle this year, while Whitehead is putting in good work every down.

After the debacle that was Smitty, it’s nice to have a defense you can be proud of again. Only nick I can give them is when they go into prevent defense and allow the other team back in the game. But that’s not on them, that’s on coaching. Got to learn to keep the pedal to the medal for the whole game. Looking for a blowout this weekend!

I think Whitehead has stood out to me. In a league where big hits have become almost extinct, he’ll make you think twice about coming over the middle. He’s been good on the blitz too.

First, that laugh Todd Bowles had at Greg Aumans question before this one was awesome! IT has even rare to see coach show emotion either way in all of his press conferences.

Second, I think Gholston might have his best season as a pro if he can stay healthy. Whitehead has made some good plays this year! I hope the defense picks Herbert three times this weekend, and sacks him at least four times. .

  7. DBS Says:

I don’t care what they win by. 3,6 or 30. As long as it is a win. 5000 yards and all the rest of the garbage that goes with it gets nothing if they don’t get the wins to get in the playoffs. Just keep winning.

Gholston & Whitehead……a couple of 4th rounders……nice to see us getting production from some of our later round picks….

Miller & Watson…..Cichy & Nelson and yes (don’t laugh) Ryan Smith, a big contributor on ST.

Hopefully, we can add Tyler Johnson to this list.

Just keep winning indeed. And the stats and accolades will come as well… For the entire team 😉

I’m glad Gholston is finally contributing and earning his pay. I have bashed him plenty in previous seasons. I’ll give him his just due.
    Good job!

I knew Whitehead was the genuine article from his rookie preseason. You can bet Winfield is learning from playing with him!

    @Jimmy

Normally I would ignore a post like yours about women. Only because Im like Trump when it comes to females. But dang man, I cant even watch a minute of the Oakland White Sox game. It hurts my ears and she sounds so hot and knowledgeable.

    Im truely heart broken. 🙁

  16. Owlykat Says:

I have always been a fan of both Whitehead and Gholston. Glad to see them get some praise from their Defensive Coordinator. Whitehead also can play halfback as well but we need him right where he is!
