NFC’s Best …”Because They Actually Can Play Defense”

October 3rd, 2020

Rex Ryan laughing it up a 2017 Bucs practice

There once was a very successful defensive guru who called a game much like Todd Bowles does, though they are very different people.

Joe’s referring to blitz-crazy, feet-freak blowhard former head coach and defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, who now works for BSPN.

Don’t get things twisted, Joe likes Ryan, and Joe actually had the great pleasure of talking to Ryan during a Bucs-Jaguars practice in Jacksonville a few summers ago. Ryan had a lot to tell Joe about Ryan Smith’s struggles at cornerback during the session.

While performing his BSPN TV duties, Ryan was clear this week that he believes the Bucs can be the top dogs of the NFC by the time Week 17 rolls around. And that’s not all about Tom Brady, in Ryan’s mind, “it’s because they actually can play defense.”

Ryan said he sees poor defenses when he watches Seattle, New Orleans and Dallas. He thinks Green Bay’s defense will improve through the season but not match the Bucs’.

Ryan stressed his appreciation of blitz-happy Todd Bowles and the quality of the Bucs’ pass rushers.

Joe loves what the defense collectively has rolled out in the first three games, though Joe’s very eager to see what the defense looks like against the Packers on Oct. 18. That will be a telling test.

Ryan went on to say he likes seeing that Bucco Bruce Arians “swallowed a little of his pride” and has allowed his offense to change a lot to accommodate Brady.

That last sentence says it all……YOU PEOPLE

  2. Youngbucs Says:

Again that’s the media narrative about the offense being changed all talk. This is BA offense different QB making decisions. Again the only play we ran that we didn’t last year is the flea flicker.

  3. Zwak Says:

No disrespect to the nutty professor Monte Kiffin..

  4. Mitch Says:

I have seen Arians say that there was not a big difference in his offense compared to what Brady ran in New England. He is letting Tom pick what he likes to do and said the real challenge is verbiage and chemistry with his receivers. It will all come together… as long as COVID doesn’t end the season first.

    “Bucs defense has no weaknesses

    Strong in all 3 levels

They hide flaws by gang tackling and complimenting each other

Each game they are cementing each players roles and building chemistry

Only injuries came slow this defense down ”

They’re not shutting down Rodgers- the offense will need to score points.

  7. JimmyJack Says:

Alan yes shutting down Rodgers is tall order. But we might now need a shutdown performance…….Our defense might be good enough to force two turnovers which could be the difference….. Or just a few big plays like a sack or something to stall a key drive could make the difference.

It will be a fun game to see how it plays out. And we will have a week and a half to prepare. I will take every little advantage I can.

    GO BUCS!!!

  8. ArmchairGM Says:

That’s the difference I see between the Bucs and other teams, the defense. Offenses are thriving around the league right now. If you look at the schedule of teams ahead of the Bucs in defensive rankings, they haven’t played any decent offenses. Admittedly, the Bucs played the Panthers and the Broncos, but they also limited the Saints. The Packers game is going to be a great way to test the defense and see if the bucs can compete with a contender.

  9. Jmarkbuc Says:

Kansas City will be a huge test.. Heck the Bears are 3-0, and Khalil Mack and Roquan Smith ain’t no joke .

I remember that video of Ryan and his wife’s toes/feet!

  13. Darin Says:

    Alan.
I disagree. Not sure what you mean by shutting down, but pressure on the qb makes all the difference. There’s a reason the team with the best defense usually wins the super bowl.

  14. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Darin-
I agree that Defense wins championships, but Rodgers is in a class with P Mahomes and R Wilson- they can win a game with sheer talent.

  15. August 1976 Buc Says:

Everyone saw the demolition job done twice on Rodgers and the Pack by San Fran last year. Who knows how the Bucs D will play, but there is not a QB that does well when they are getting roughed up and knocked to the ground alot during a game.GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. adam from ny Says:

  17. Earl Says:

  18. ClwJB Says:

We need the D to lead the way for the next 6-8 games / it’s not an easy schedule at all

It lightens up in the final 4 games just when the O should be clicking on all cylinders

  19. BucEmUp Says:

It only took todd bowles defesne half of 2019 to unlearn 5 years of lovie and mike smith soft zone defense failed coaching. The proof is in the pudding coaching matters.Same goes for new england they are a complete team with newton, hoyer whoever gets the start.

  20. ModHairKen Says:
