How Good Is Devin White?

September 18th, 2020

Devin White looked damn good against the Saints.

He didn’t make a game-turning big play, but he sure played well.

Joe asked White if he felt like the speed and power he said he added this offseason translated to the field in the season opener, and White emphatically replied that it did — and that he’s a baller.

Joe then asked defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, after finally seeing White in live action, to detail how the savior Bucs linebacker has improved in his second season.

“Again, he’s another one that’s grown mentally,” Bowles said. “Coming into it as a rookie and being a signal caller – that’s tough because you have to take care of everybody and get the call at the same time. He’s embraced it, he’s a natural leader. The knowledge of the game has slowed down for him immensely, so that allows him to play a lot faster. Lavonte [David] gives him a great deal of help. Again, those two guys together, competing against each other and getting along, I think that’s made him a very good football player early on in his career.”

Joe is excited for the true difference-maker White could become this season. And that’s what a No. 5 overall pick should be, a Pro Bowl/big-impact player.

But White’s going to have to bring those big plays to really earn his status and reach his goals. Hopefully, that starts on Sunday.

Joe was wrong. He said the Bucs should have taken someone else.

devin is an improving work in progress…

    ……

    but more importantly…

all these white jersey and white pants games is a bit too much…

we really need a few white jersey with pewter pants games…

    it’s a good look

    Agreed

White on white never looks great.
White jersey with pewter pants…..probably our best uniform.

I wonder if we had to wear them since the Saints had black/black?

  4. orlbucfan Says:

Lavonte David so deserves to play in a playoff game. White is being mentored by the best. Keep these uniforms, please!!

  5. 541BucsFan Says:

It seemed like DW and LD were in on every play. 12 tackles each.

    But where was Shaq?

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

White’s not only a great player but has an excellent character……no Uber “hassles” in his future…..he may “horse” around a bit though….

  7. Smashsquatch Says:

    Skyrocket trajectory

  8. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

So our record is what…7 wins 10 losses with him in the line-up?

  9. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

Football is a team sport, cmon man.

The Saints were a perennial 7-9 for years in the last decade with an undisputed Top 10 QB of all time. 🙄

  10. hammerhead Says:

Joe was against drafting him because MLB wasn’t a sexy enough position to warrant a high pick.

  11. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

TE Antony Auclair is placed on injured reserve.

  12. JimmyJack Says:

White played strong until they got near the goaline. White played like crap on the Saints first two TDs…….He let Kamara come out the backfield on 3rd & 10?? He was awful on that play. Next drive he runs into no man’s land to give up an easy Score.

Devin White needs to learn how to play the endzone pronto!

I distinctly remember McCaffrey tearing White to pieces in the redzone last year. White needs to step up once the field shrinks. He has his great flashes but he looks rotten whenever he try’s to play Redzone D. If he can ever figure out the short field he will carry this defense to greatness.

  13. JimmyJack Says:

    GO BUCS!!!

  14. JimmyJack Says:

541 the Saints dint try to th egg ow a long pass all day on Shaq. Bress did nothing but throw quick passes for 1 yard all day.

The Saints relyed on yac. The short passes took Shaq out of the game.

Let’s see if Teddy trys to take lot of time to throw. He might have to.

  15. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

The sky is the limit for Mr. White.

  16. Snook Says:

Remember when Joe questioned this pick over and over?

  17. Chris K Says:

He’s a great player!! Will be roaming the middle of the field smashing people for the next decade in pewter!

Best thing for White was ending up on this team. He’s got a defense full of vets that have been there done that. They keep working with him and his knowledge keeps growing he might be able to be better then Brooks. I just hope he can also pick Brady’s mind as well and get some good knowledge from him. I really like the fact that he seems like a real positive kid that doesn’t seem to wanna be out getting into trouble. Once pass coverage is fixed he’ll be a beast.

  19. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

The middle of our defense on all 3 levels is stacked. Vea, White, and Winfield will only get better over the next few seasons. Throw in all of our good young DB’s and look out. For all the haters of Licht he really has put together a stud team with a good mix of young guys and enough vets to help them learn faster.

  20. Jmarkbuc Says:

Better than Brooks would be a stretch….

55 was from an Era that actually played defense. But nothing so far to dislike about White.

It’s not about the sexy! Linebacker is like running back, generally there are a lot of guys able to play the position, and an easier transition to the pros, so you don’t spend high. White is shaping up to be an exceptional talent, though. It’s hard to argue the pick now.

  22. Joe Says:

“Joe was against drafting him because MLB wasn’t a sexy enough position to warrant a high pick.”

Joe is pretty clear who he wanted and why and it has nothing to do with women.

Joe wants every Bucs player to ball out. To suggest Joe doesn’t want a Bucs player to do well is sickening.

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Everyone makes the Pro Bowl, except David, but the real goal is to be an All-Pro, that means you’re the best of the best. The Pro Bowl is just a popularity contest based on who gets the most games on national TV.

Agree here. Brooks averaged almost 160 tackles a year and manned the deep middle on 3rd down pass defense. A pretty elite mix of skills.

  25. Joe Says:

Better than Brooks would be a stretch

Let’s think how history would have changed in the NFL:

Let’s say Bill Parcells drafted Brooks to be a 34 outside linebacker in New England. Parcells later was replaced by Belicheat, a disciple of Parcells.

Brooks would have been the new Lawrence Taylor. He would have been an utter terror blitzing off the edge. Boston would have had an interstate named after him.

  26. SOEbuc Says:

What ifs? I would think that’s beneath you Joe. “What if” a young talented Derrick Brooks got into a car accident in NE, broke his ankle, and could never play ball again?

  27. SOEbuc Says:

Anyone calling this gray is the same original pewter you’re way off. I don’t love the all whites but white and grey would be ugly as well.

More likely a rotary or a toll booth. 🙂

Another one you were HORRIBLY wrong about Joe!!

  30. Hodad Says:

First play of the game for NO misdirection White was totally fooled. Easy completion, first down. On Kamara’s TD run on the right side where was White? Look, let’s not make him out to be the next Ray Lewis just yet. The kid has a long way to go. I think he’ll get there, but like Marpet who’s an average RG, but a pro bowler in the eyes of most Buc fans let’s see how it goes. Speaking of Lewis, I love watching him break down film. It wasn’t just his talent that made him great, it was his film study, and knowing what the offense was trying to do every play. If White can get that mental side of the game down watch out. If he doesn’t, he’ll be just a good player like Marpet, nothing more.

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

One of the cool things about this team is that the stars are all comfortable in their own skins and do not display envy.

Last year ME13 embraced CG14’s explosion onto the NFL scene.

It’s great that Lavonte and White get along so well.

Seems like these guys might actually be a TEAM!!! Imagine that.

  32. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Hodad,

    Good points.
Bucs Fans have always projected expectations really high.. too often to end up in crushing despair.

    Even keeled would be better.

  33. SOEbuc Says:

    Hodad

Marpet was moved to LG where he is average after being pro bowl material at RG in the beginning.

    “There is only 1
