Hating Bucs CBs

September 6th, 2020

Looks are deceiving.

So there are some really lousy pass defenses in the NFL.

The Lions were horrible at stopping the pass. So too were the Cardinals. As we are now eight days from the season opener in New Orleans, stats geek Cynthia Frelund of the NFL Network decided to rank the best pair of cornerbacks in the NFL, from top to bottom.

Now the Bucs were on a run to end the season with a decent pass defense. Carlton Davis (third) and Jamel Dean (fifth) were in the top five last season for passes defensed. And a rookie, Sean Murphy-Bunting, led the team in picks.

So one might figure with two second-year corners expected to improve as most second-year players do, and Davis likely coming into his own in his third season, and all three playing their second season with defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, that the Bucs might be, at worst, middle of the pack, right?

Well, in ranking who has the best starting cornerback duos in the NFL, Frelund projects the Bucs’ corners (Davis and Dean? Davis and SMB?) to be the absolute worst in the league.

That’s not a typo.

The video below is not really a video, it is sort of a video slideshow of how she has all the teams ranked in pairs of corners. So there is no explanation how Frelund reached her conclusion.

Did someone corrupt her Excel spreadsheet or does she just not watch game tape? Or perhaps Frelund spends her football Sundays sipping Rosé at Gladstones in Malibu while constantly checking her 73 fantasy teams on her iPhone using the NFL.com app?

Joe understands how some are skeptical of the Bucs corners, but dead last? Really? That just seems like a bunch of ish to Joe.

    All opinions are not credible.

No worries. Perhaps her ignorance will serve as motivation. I’m all for it!

  2. Drunkinybor Says:

If she really believes that her football evaluation skills are like my 6 year olds.

  3. Bojim Says:

Think they might surprise the league this year.

  4. Bruce Blahak Says:

The Ira’s of our football world will become extinct. What we listen to now: spreadsheets and half arsed experts. Ugh

  5. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

It’s just an opinion. Whatever. All that matters is what happens on Sundays. Wake me on the 13th.

Amusing how many of the picks shown were against the Bucs….

  7. Stanglassman Says:

All she does is plug in analytics and the cbs had a really bad 8-9 games to start the season. I just rewatched the Seattle game and Dean may have had the worst game I’ve ever seen a cb have. For a more accurate assessment she should have weighted the later games more heavily. I feel great about this teams corners. I like the fact she is undervalued the corners and predicted 9 wins. If she said they were the best and predicted 15 wins then all they could do is disappoint.

    +1!

I don’t follow any other teams, so I can’t compare and contrast, but the eyeball test over the last third of the season showed me that these CBs can play, and Bowles knows how to use them!

  9. Buc50 Says:

Don’t be surprised if she’s right. Those guys are going to have a lot of balls thrown at them due to the offense putting up points this year.

  10. adam from ny Says:

    she’s fit af……check

    has a busted grill piece……check…

and is straight up not qualified to do her job……checkeroonie !

  11. SteveK Says:

Good bulletin board stuff for the DBs here.

I miss Coach Monken, and his line, “we chose to suck”. Dude is a boss and I wish him well. Kept it so, so damn real. Refreshing AF to be a fan of that guy.

  12. adam from ny Says:

i’d possibly bring in ha ha clinton dixxx and swap him out for motley the rookie…

we can use a vet back there to keep heads cool when the yung guns get flustered…

the secondary is gonna get lit up on occasion against some better qbs…a vet can calm the storm when it hits

  13. Red Blud Buc Boy Says:

i’d possibly bring in ha ha clinton dixxx and swap him out for motley the rookie…

So take out the guy who performed like a 1st/2nd round pick in camp and replace him with an aging vet who hasn’t really been that good, and doesn’t even play the same position???

  14. Jeff Says:

She’s one of those Sport’s Babe types. Little substance and zero football acumen. She’s not taking into consideration the significant improvement the team’s corners made at the end of the year.

  15. Hodad Says:

She is right about last year, this year hopefully she’ll be proved wrong. Rookies, second year players, having to learn the NFL, and a new defense is a hard thing to do. She’s not looking at how they improved as the year went on. This year they’ll know what they’re doing, and won’t have to take the field 30 extra times. She’s living in the past, it’s a new day in T.B..

  16. Chris l Says:

Cynthia frelund sucks. She never actually goes back to check her bad projections. This is classic her looking at full season stats. Secretly she hates the Bucs I think and is a lions fan. Good luck with that. She is OVERRATED in her analysis.

  17. Stanglassman Says:

Clinton-Dix is a safety and Motley is a outside CB. Motley could end up being the best cb on this roster when it’s all said and done.

I get when people complain about not so bright former nfl players working a commentators but I don’t get how Frelund isn’t qualified.

  18. AKicknTheBucNuts Says:

Her big nose ranks last in my book.

  19. AKicknTheBucNuts Says:

    She has “man nose”

  20. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

With all the players the Bucs brought in and signed (mostly offense), I HAVE to trust the DB coaches in that they believe pretty strongly that they have trust and faith in their DBs.

WOW! A week from today and I’ll be watching Joe Buck, Troy Aikman and just ooggling at Erin Andrews.

  21. BucEmUp Says:

She obviously didnt watch them last year

Amusing how many of the picks shown were against the Bucs

Yeah out of 32 there was 2 involving the Bucs offense and in true form both were off a incorrectly run routes, not poor throws according to the head coach.

(Surprise, surprise, actually not really for those of us that speak the truth.)

  23. Marine Buc Says:

I’m more concerned with our starting safeties. A guy who can’t tackle and a rookie.

Should we bring in safety Earl Thomas? We now have the cap space to do that.

  24. Bucsfanman Says:

    You guys are rough! LOL
Why would anyone give the Bucs credit for anything on defense, outside of Shaq’s 19.5 sacks? Nobody outside of TB watches all the games.
So please, let them think we’re going to suck. If any opponent is reading this and drops their guard, good.
If it helps inspire our DBs, even better.
I’m not a big Cynthia fan either but she’s better than some of the other hacks that pretend to be “experts”.

  25. Ndog Says:

BTW just to stay in reality in those last 6 games, where everyone is pointing to us playing this great defense, we played against J. Brissett, who is now a backup, David Blough who was cut yesterday, Nick Foles who is now backing up Trubisky, and the Falcons who did drive back to back times on us in the finally minutes for 2 FGs to tie the game when all we needed s one stop to win.

So I know the kool aid is strong but is she wrong, what has the defense done against anyone of quality?

  26. m0j0 Says:

This is awesome! More fuel to the fire for the Bucs CB’s. Nothing like someone disrespecting you and calling you the worst to motivate. Someone needs to print this article and frame it for the Bucs CBs!

  27. Jmarkbuc Says:

Not saying I want her to be correct… but as I said a few days ago, the talent that has been amassed on offense is certainly impressive, but our secondary is still our secondary.

She’s not wrong until she is… I really hope she is.

Lastly, like a lot of OG Buc fans, I have seen a lot of crazy things happen here. Lots of overhyped pre seasons that led to nowhere. Let’s pump the breaks and go “ strong and silent” instead of all this noise about how great we are.

    Just sayin

Good morning Doosh, I’m never done correcting inaccuracies and telling the truth.

That’s OK, they’ll just make her look stupid at the end.

  31. Va buc Says:

That lady really has something against the Buccs she been putting us down as soon as we got brady. Find out who her fav team is and it will tell alot lol

  32. Joe in Michigan Says:

I know we’re “all in”, but don’t want to see a negative influence around our young DB’s (not saying Earl Thomas is that, but it SEEMS that way). Remember Brent Grimes and VH3? It seemed to me that both loafed at times, avoiding tackles, etc. VH3 may have just been that way, but I don’t think it helped that Grimes was his mentor.

  33. El Buco Realisto Says:

She must have done a minute of research and learned the the Bucs played a bunch of backup qb’s at the end of the year of a very soft schedule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Something the sheep keep overlooking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another point of confusion for the sheep seem to be this “all in”!!!!!!!!! The sheep are very confused, that this so called ” all in ” was a Superbowl push, that the roster was ready for a run!!!!! In “reality” the “all in” is because ole stale biscuit is “old and desperate”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She’s a noted Buccaneers hater. Several times noted. Definitely some anti-Bucs bias in this take as well as all of her others on us.

  36. Mike Says:

Yeah a fg instead of a pick in that last game would have won it too Ndog, I believe your own confidence in 3 was shook on that day, so don’t come in here with that crap about the Falcons game, alot of people had a hand in losing that game, and if 3 was the QB that he should have been as a fifth year starter, 1st overall pick, his hand would not have been one of the biggest in the pile.

  37. Joe in Michigan Says:

El Buco Fake-A-Leasto: Are you a Saints fan? Or a fan of taint?

  38. Ndog Says:

So Mike let me help you out here cuz maybe you don’t understand how football works. When people say the defense blew a lead the quarterback and kicker do not play defense. just so you understand the defense’s job is to stop the other team from scoring and our defense had not one but two chances to stop the other team and never could do it. That’s called blowing a lead, now that you know maybe next time when you comment you’ll have the knowledge to provide something relevant.

  39. Mike Says:

Maybe you don’t understand, turnovers affect the defense not only physically, but also psychologically. Everyone is tired of 3, and everyone is tired of you. Do everyone a favor and quit the sire again.
