Chris Godwin & Keenan Allen Money

September 5th, 2020

It appears the bar has been set at $20 million per year for Chris Godwin’s next contract, which certainly would make him the highest paid slot receiver/1a receiver in NFL history.

We’re in the season of last-minute contract extensions and restructurings, and a fat new deal just went to 28-year-old Chargers receiver Keenan Allen. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the details, $20 million+ per year and ESPN says Allen got $50 million guaranteed.

Allen is a hell of a player, but he’s never had a season like Godwin did in 2019. And Godwin is four years younger.

His contract is up after this season and does anyone think Godwin will struggle in 2020?

Joe hopes this isn’t the final act for Godwin in Tampa with the salary cap shrinking next year and the Bucs potentially more eager to pay Shaq Barrett monster money because his position is more valuable than Godwin’s.

Regardless, Joe’s happy for Godwin that the receiver market is exploding, and Joe’s happy that football is just eight days away. Joe’s not a bit concerned about 2021.

Salary caps often have a way of working themselves out organically, like Kwon Alexander blowing his knee out and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, becoming unworthy of being paid like a starter.

If you missed news that Mike Evans reworked his contract today. That’s here.

I always thought it would come down to Godwin vs. Evans for WR money. You don’t see teams holding 2 big WR contracts. They pick one and let the other get a monster deal elsewhere. Godwin has earned it. I’m hoping someone emerges between Watson, Miller and Johnson this season as a decent #2 option.

⬆️ This line of thinking is why we have been the worst franchise in American professional sports history.
C’mon, you’re reading between the lines. Joe’s talking about today, 8 days before kickoff. Joe’s already written many times that the organization dropped the ball not having a promising young/QB developmental guy on the roster last year/this year.–Joe

Have to keep Chris and Mike together. Scrimp somewhere else.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Reworking Godwin now when he’s on a lower salary (paying him more this year) will save money for next year and beyond…..this type of transaction happens all the time….do it, if we can.

  5. Bobby M. Says:

Suh won’t be back….they can restructure Brady, Gronk, Jensen, Smith….It’s all in time and I bet they find the money to keep a guy like Godwin

  6. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I just don’t see how it is possible to keep both Godwin and Mike Evan when we need to resign Shaq and Lavonte David. Gronk and suh are probably gone.

It will be an unusual offseason next year.

  7. CPN Says:

How did Keenan Allen get all that money?

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There is no way we keep everyone……we need to draft a couple of players to replace high salary players…….like LT….perhaps DL….

    Replacing Gronk & Suh would do it….perhaps Gronk & D Smith….

But to keep both receivers, Brady, Shaq, JPP & David……you must sacrifice somewhere…..but now isn’t the time to worry about that.

  9. Clean House Says:

I say let’s see what he does this year before we “open up the Glazer vault with team loot.” Yes he’s obviously a special talent and hard worker, but let’s see how he handles all of his newfound and in my opinion somewhat premature noteriety.

  10. CocoaBeachBuc Says:

    Really? Premature….lol…

  11. Georger Says:

If we would of extended him this year we probably could of done it for 15 – 16 mil a year

  12. ModHairKen Says:

Can’t have Suh, JPP, David, Evans, Godwin, Fournette, Brady and Gronkowski all next year. The time to sign Godwin was last year. It’s a shame.

This team is built for one year.

But, the entire NFL is going to be in am upheval next year. Expect there to be an adjustment. Expect a lot of one year contracts and holdouts.

  13. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Bucs cut newly signed center A.Q Shipley. They can resign him after 24 hours.

  14. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Most likely they will place OL John Molton to IR after the 53 cut expiration, opening up a spot for Shipley again.

Greg Auman says four undrafted rookies made it this year: John Molton, WR John Hurst, LB Cam Gill and CB Parnell Motley.

  15. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

So far, unless I missed it, injury prone Safety Justin Evan made the cut.

  16. Stanglassman Says:

Alabama- I know John Hurst, Bell, Holcomb and Motley made the 53 but don’t know the full list. Did they keep 6 wrs? I’m sure we will all know in a few minutes but. .

  17. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Yep- Justin Evans has been added to the PUP/Reserve list.

  18. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Stanglassman Says: “Did they keep 6 wrs? I’m sure we will all know in a few minutes but.”

Evans, Godwin, Miller, Watson, Hurst and Tyler Johnson should be six WRs

  19. SB Says:

” and America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, becoming unworthy of being paid like a starter.”

    …………….

You just pissed ALL in Ndog’s Cheerios Joe.

  20. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Still haven’t seen the full list from Greg Auman but DE Pat O’ Conner made the 53 roster. LB Quintion Bell also made the roster.

  21. mark2001 Says:

Glennon mob…he was just released…time to get the band back together again.

  22. Stanglassman Says:

I’m surprised Hurst got it over Jaydon Mickens. Tyler Johnson is a question too. I knew they couldn’t risk cutting him but I thought he’d end up in the 21 day pup.

  23. Stanglassman Says:

You got to give it up for Quinton Bell too. It’s pretty amazing to make the 53 converting from WR to OLB. His measurables are incredible. Can wait to this guy grow.

  24. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Stanglassman Says: “I’m surprised Hurst got it over Jaydon Mickens.”

Rumors was that Jaydon Mickens would make the cut but I haven’t seen if he made it or was cut.

  25. JGhotier Says:

You can’t pay him more than Mike Evans period. A similar Mike Evans type contract should suffice and be fair all the way around.

  26. Stanglassman Says:

I believe Michel Divenity got cut but haven’t heard anything in Cam Gill. I’m guessing no news is good news for Cam G. I’m sure Divenity will be offered a O PS spot if he’s not picked up elsewhere.

  27. Allbuccedup Says:

According to spotrac the Bucs have 25 mil in cap space in 2021. That’s without Godwin, Barrett, Gronk, David, Suh, and Haag. You could resign the last 4 but Godwin and Barrett could be challenging. And what happens if Fournette has a monster year.

  28. Stanglassman Says:

Alabama. You listed 6 WRs above. No way they keep 7. It’s got to be Tyler or Mickens. That’s why I thought they’d put Tyler on the PuP.

  29. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Stanglassman Says: “I believe Michel Divenity got cut but haven’t heard anything in Cam Gill. ”

Divenity was cut but Cam Gill made the 53 roster.

  30. Stanglassman Says:

Can someone explain to me why they had to cut AQ Shipley for 24 hours? I saw that on Auman’s twitter but no explanation.

  31. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Stanglassman Says: Can someone explain to me why they had to cut AQ Shipley for 24 hours?

He needs to clear the 24 hour waiver period. I guess the Bucs feel that no one will pick him up since he is 34. When the Bucs move several rookies to the practice squad they can pick Shipley’s contract back up.

  32. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Several team have cut their roster to 52 or less, hoping to pick up players that have been cut. Should be interesting.

  33. Stanglassman Says:

I understand I think. So they can move someone like rookie wr Tyler directly to the practice squad after he makes the 53 not subjecting him to waivers. It’s some protection. There is still no protection for PS players. Even the ones under the protected status are able to be taken early in the week as long as they are put on the new teams active 53 is my understanding.

  34. Mort Says:

Allen is overpaid, and Godwin shouldn’t get 20m a year either. I love CG as a player and as a person, but that’s just too much.

  35. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Stanglassman Says: “There is still no protection for PS players.”

This year only due to the Covid-19, the practice squad increased to 16 players, up from 10. Teams can also protect 4 players each week. These 4 players cannot be stolen to another teams active roster.

  36. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Mort says, “Allen is overpaid, and Godwin shouldn’t get 20m a year either. I love CG as a player and as a person, but that’s just too much.”

I agree. With the estimated salary cap being 20 mil less next year, a lot of teams are going to be over the CAP. I think the Eagles will be 50 million over and the Saints will be 70 million over. Most teams are going to strive to keep their core players. GMs should wait till next year to see the fallout before overpaying players this year. Glad to see Licht holding off on signing players to long term contract this year.

  37. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Stanglassman Says, “You listed 6 WRs above. No way they keep 7.”

Yep – they are keeping seven WRs. Jaydon Mickens made the 53 roster. I think special teams coach Keith Armstrong likes the WR more than safeties this year. He needed to do something as they sucked last year.

  38. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I haven’t did the math but a lot of rookies made the Bucs roster this year. 4 were undrafted.

  39. Todd Says:

The Bucs can sign Barrett, David and Godwin easy next year cut brate, cut Smith right there that’s 20 million added to 25 makes 45 million. Gronk will take a friendly deal to stay with Brady another year for year two. So you let suh and smith walk draft and replace them in the 2021 draft.

  40. yeah Says:

    No thanks

  41. Buczilla Says:

Unless we implode this season and decide to blow it all up, I don’t think there is any way in hell that we let Godwin get away. The receiver position is the strength of this team and it’s identity. It allowed an average quarterback prone to making both buffoonish plays and amazing plays to look superhuman some weeks.

It’s still the Bucs though, so I can’t rule out that they’d be dumb enough to let Godwin get away, just really unlikely.
