Wes Welker Talks Tom Brady Yelling Often And Tampa Bay

April 11th, 2020

Like his friend Tom Brady, former superstar receiver Wes Welker, currently the 49ers receivers coach, wasn’t pleased with the Patriots when he exited New England and he recently talked about why — and about how Brady will crack a loud whip in Tampa.

For those who don’t remember Welker, he had an unbelievably productive run, making 102 starts in his career and catching a whopping 903 balls while playing on Super Bowl teams with Brady and Peyton Manning.

Welker talked to WEEI radio in Massachusetts recently and explained that Bill Belicheat is very hard on players and took a bit of the fun out of the game. Welker believes fun is critical to players playing their best, so he feels good about Brady getting a fresh start — like Welker had when he went to the Broncos after the 2012 season.

Bucs players better be prepared for a lot of yelling by Brady on the sidelines and in practice when things aren’t going well, Welker said.

Getting acclimated to Brady as a receiver was a bumpy road.

“He was hard has hell on me,” Welker said. “And I was starting to get pissed at Tom. I was like, screw this guy, man, he’s all over me with this stuff.’ But it was good. He just wanted to win and he wanted to bring it together.”

Welker recalled a time in 2009 when he adjusted on a route and Brady threw a ball that hit him in the foot. He said Brady went wild on him (keep in mind Welker led the league with 123 catches that season).

Brady was sweet talking Welker soon after, the receiver said, but he wasn’t ready for it. “.Ok, babe, what I was thinking on this.’ … And I’m like, ‘You’re calling me babe now. I want to fight you.’ We had plenty of those instances.”

There are no superstars on a Bill Belicheat team, Welker said. That’s what Brady knows and he’ll bring that mentality to the Bucs.

“A lot of times [Belicheat] calls out the star players a lot of times just to set the tone with the whole team. Where everybody’s like, ‘Ok, he’s talking to Tom like that? Well, obviously he can talk to me like that.'” Welker said. “And Tom, you know, has such a great way about him of being able to kind of take it even though it kind of makes him mad. You know, he takes it and keeps on going to work and improving, and working on his craft and everything else. And everybody else just kind of has to fall in line.”

What an intense ride ahead it will be for the Bucs offense, as they adapt to a new kind of culture change.

It’s going to be hilarious watching TB12 screaming at the sloppiest NFL route runner Mike Evans run his slant and come back routes

Man member before opening day last year when Kobe said

“if Ronald Jones does X (don’t remember exactly how many) Yards. I will leave and never come back.”

What happened to those days? Now we have a dude unironically saying Mike Evans runs bad routes.

  5. Joe in Michigan Says:

Do people really think we should trade Mike Evans, or are they joking? If anyone is serious about this, I’m very happy “fans” don’t have a say-so in the roster.

  6. BucEmUp Says:

LOL, “Your calling me babe now, I want to fight you.” LMFAO!!!!!

  7. Ndog Says:

Our WRs are in for serious yelling then, cause as good as those guys are, they run some sloppy routes, all day everyday.

  8. Tom Edrington Says:

Mike Evans tends to inexplicably drop easy catches from time to time…..can’t wait for Brady to unload on him and Evans get all uppity claiming he’s being “disrespected..”

  10. DannyDimes Says:

Take it from me Danny Dimes, Tom Brady will never play snap for the Buccaneers, The NFL Season will be cancelled this year in 2020 and Tom will decide to retire and move his family to LA to pursue business opportunities then play a snap. PRO Sports as we know it will not be played until late 2021 at the earliest

  11. Buczilla Says:

I’ve got a feeling that that backstabbing weasel DeSean Jackson wouldn’t last a single practice with this team.

  12. Pewter Power Says:

Can this ain’t the patriots in that aspect of the game, I can see him getting on oj Howard but we got big time receivers and besides Brady hasn’t been in this position since he was a rookie.

People can stop talking about what Brady used to do, no one is changing the entire playbook for him and everyone except rookies are ahead of the curb, he’s got to catch up before taking that tone it’ll be more of learning each other and a back and forth than him just yelling at guys who know the offense better than him. Get over it he’s no longer a patriot and it’ll be a different environment

  13. Darin Says:

It’s the mental errors he mostly yells at people for not dropped passes. And he doesnt mind being yelled at when he makes them. For you youngins out there, it’s called manhood. Get your head outa your A if your feelings get hurt when getting yelled at. More accountability coming to the team.

So Welker is claiming that players need to have fun in order to play their best? I think Bellichek and his six super bowl wins would disagree.

AGAIN…Belicheat had only ONE winning season in his first six years. He was a defensive genius for sure…but time will tell if he’s really a good HC. He certainly was NOT before Brady…that’s a simple FACT…check YO sheets!

BB made ONE playoff in six years and it was one and done…the other five including his first in NE were LOSING seasons.

Here’s something that might aggravate the JW fluffers. Perhaps ME..CG…OJ will ALL elevate their games and run more precise routes. JW was sloppy with his life on and Off the field. Nobody took him seriously because he ignored coaches and was not precise in his throws in practice or games.

Maybe just maybe a new QB can inspire all these guys to be their best!

NOBODY…not even NDOG can say JW was the kind of player who got everyone around him to elevate their games.

  24. SOEbuc Says:

I really hope Brady comes in and kills it. These Bucs players are freakin hyped to have Brady yelling at them. Shove it everyone a-hole that said we’d only win 2-3 more games with Brady and the Bucs receivers.

  25. TheBradyBunch Says:

StPete – Let’s not go overboard on your criticism. Everyone says that JW worked his tail off and was the first one in the building and last one to leave. He isn’t perfect for sure, but he had a lot of qualities that you want your QB to have. Driven, motivated, hard working, and supported his teammates. No need to act like he was just some slacker that didn’t care while he was hear.

  32. geno711 Says:

I thought the most interesting thing from the Brady – Stern interview on football was Brady talking about WR trust.

Brady and Belichick were on the same page with WR trust
Brady offered a window into his frustration with rookie wide receivers last season, and explained that Belichick had his back.
“I would say, ‘I don’t have any trust that this guy can help us win the game,’ ” Brady said. “I’ve definitely expressed my opinion to say, ‘If you put him out there, I’m not going to throw him the ball.’ The whole team is trusting me to do what’s right by the team, so you can’t put someone out there who I don’t believe in. Because if I don’t believe in him, it’s worthless for the team. I think fortunately for me, coach Belichick always saw it the same way as me, which is why I think we had such a great connection.”

  33. geno711 Says:

As detailed as Brady is in his life, I have to think that he liked what he saw out of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin and that is why he wanted to come to Tampa Bay.

I am assuming that if he thought they were bad route runners, he would not be coming here. Doesn’t mean he will not hold them to an even higher standard but seems that he must have liked their ability to be in the right spot.

Today an Oxford professor who has spent the last 10 year of her life creating vaccine for influenza and malaria says that she believes right now that she has a vaccine that is 80 percent likely to work and that she feels that it will be available to everyone by September. Maybe she is optimistic but she is also a scientist that is specifically in that field – so she has some credibility to her statement.

Inovio Pharmaceuticals located in San Diego, created successful vaccines for Zika, Mers, and Ebola. They had a potential working vaccine for COVID-19 in January.

There is some evidence that there will be COVID-19 vaccine sooner than most.

  36. geno711 Says:

I was in New England Sept 22, 2013 at Josh Freeman’s last start with the Buc’s. We went into the stadium early and we were watching both teams warm up. I always have remembered the precision of the scrimmage right before the game by Brady and his receivers on their 7 on 7’s. While Josh Freeman was just doing soft lobs to Vincent Jackson and the other receivers. Not that Vincent Jackson was not a good receiver, it just seemed to be that New England pre game practice was done at a higher standard.

Im not taking a stupid vaccine….the only 2 times i’ve had the flu is when i got the flu shot, once at 23 and again at 26.

I take elderberry with zinc and echinacea, plus 5000 iu vit D, and quinine which can be found in schweppes tonic water (about 4oz before bed with the zinc, it also helps with muscle cramps)…it permeates the cells to allow all other nutrients in. Im 48 now and never get sick. A slight cold once every couple years, but i work around a lot of people. I average 4-5 hours of sleep a day because i think thats all i need-i wake up wide awake. Im also a bit of a germ freak and go out of my way not to touch common surfaces many others touch….and after i get home i wash my hands, been like this for many years.

Mike Evans is such a crappy route runner that he’s had 6 straight one thousand yard seasons, lol, give me a break. I realize it’s important to be an objective fan, but, have you said anything positive about the Bucs? The only thing I read from you is negativity and no solutions.

  44. Vooloo Says:

    DannyDimes

MLB is LITERALLY negotiating a way to start MLB baseball up immediately. The TV revenue is all they care about. MLB players don’t want to not get paid most if not all their pay.

Same with the NFL, the vast majority of their income comes from televised and streamed games. Attendance and concessions are small peanuts for them. If you think that MLB and their players association wants to start back up in the next month, that the NFL isn’t just as greedy, both owners and players?

  45. ncbucsfan Says:

Danny Dimes. Maybe you’re right, maybe not. WTF do you feel the need to keep posting it on JBF like you’re going to get some credit or something for saying it here. Damn dude….a million freakin people feel the same way you do and a million disagree. STFU about it already and post that depressing-ass prediction on a news site where people go to act pessimistic and scared as hell like you. Certainly accept your point but SB gave the perfect answer.

Hard work is not the answer…SMART work is far more important.

As the coach told me….”Practice does NOT make perfect….PERFECT practice makes perfect. Sloppy is not the same as lazy. It’s mental…like choking.

Geno illustrated that very point watching the Freeman led Bucs warm up for a game against the Brady led Bucs.

I remember two years ago Joe was writing about the number of picks JW was throwing in August practice…he had a rough camp…can happen to anyone but again…players tend to play like the practice. Especially in football.

Basketball not as much…hockey like football..in fact hoops may be the only sport I’ve watched where a guy can just walk onto the court and light it up.

  48. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

I remember watching a Patriots vs. Bucs preseason game in Tampa. Don’t remember the score but it was early 4th quarter and Bucs were getting killed. Brady was standing alone at the south end of the east sideline just pissed because his last drive failed. I remember thinking – straight cold killer.

Brandy is a fanatically competitive, while most people refer to Brady as the G.O.A.T it’s actually Brees that leads him in almost every stat except SB wins. With last year seeing the distance widen between Brees and himself on most records he knew he would never be able to catch Brees if he stayed in NE. The only course for him would be to come to NFC South and battle Brees head to head twice a year and with the weapons in Tampa he has a good chance of passing Brees before he retires. Brady wants to make sure when anyone in the future asks who was the G.O.A.T QB that there would never be any doubt, while you can say having 6 rings makes him the G.O.A.T you can also say he was just lucky or that it was Belicheat and not him that was the reason he had 6 rings. getting to the playoffs takes skill, winning a SB also takes luck.

  50. Alanbucsfan Says:

“Ol’ Goat” is going to lead Bucs to SB win – the only team in NFC South with 2 of them!

Both are averaging a cool 600 yards per season and Dede was selected in the 4th rd. You would’ve definitely overpaid for him…

Your assessment of receivers isn’t stellar, my friend. May I suggest you see yourself through the back door and leave quietly?

  56. Soggy Says:

When I read JBF Comment section l leave really let down most of the time with the stupidity of some posters, not buc fans just starting there crap. What the buc players and franchise must think of if they are foolish enough to read the comment section, think about that before you so called fans type your race bate etc. For the whole world to read, Happy Easter and I just saw a owner of a basketball team interview and he thinks there will be sports this year but empty stadium, TV only.

  57. Jerry Says:

Dannydimes is a bitter patriot fan. The NFL will have a season even if it means playing to empty stadiums. Too much money to lose for the league. Take your old ass back to New England!

  58. WestChap Says:

ME, CG and every other WR will take any TB12 criticism, own it and be better for it. Just silliness to think otherwise… and a few people here have clearly not been paying attention to ME13 or they would respect his route running more and understand he is way to dignified and professional to ever feel “disrespected” if TB12 gets up in his grill.

This is the key difference with Jameis… team mates truly loved him but, no way, were they hearing anything he said about improvement after his 5 years of the same mistakes repeated over and over. Talent will get you an audience but without credibility you’re soon back on the porch talking to yourself.

  59. David Says:

I think they’ll be able to handle Brady yelling at them about a route because Brady has six rings.
