“That Was Part Of The Negotiaton”

April 2nd, 2020

Former two-time Pro Bowl Colts punter and emergency backup QB Pat McAfee was talking with one of his old friends today, a guy who just happens to coach with the Buccaneers.

Tampa Bay quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen joined McAfee on his YouTube show and revealed a key detail in the Bucs-Tom Brady negotiations.

“The foundation will be Bruce Arians’ offense,” Christensen said. “It’ll be a mesh of the things, but the foundation, how you call formations, how you do things, will stay Bruce Arians’ offense. That was part of the negotiation [with Brady]. Hey, that was one of the things that was non-negotiable as far as the [quarterbacks] we were looking at [in free agency]. We weren’t going to change the offense. We’ve been here one year. We just got this thing put in, you know, guys have learned it. And Tom, he’s been outstanding. ‘Hey, just tell me what you want to do.'” That’s been one of the really impressive things about him.”

Christensen added that the Bucs want Brady’s input and will do whatever they can to find the best fits for him.

Interesting to hear how the Bucs had their terms and there was a “negotiation,” presumably that included other on-field aspects.

Tom is the ideal player. Does his job. Does his best. Makes everyone else do their best. Works with coaches.

When JW was our quarterback, I had his back. Especially when he was castigated and condemned by other posters based on allegations without proof or even evidence other than hearsay.
TB12 is now our quarterback and I will have his back now although he probably will not get the same unfair treatment.

Honestly, I would not have chosen either of them.
When JW was drafted, although not posting, I was calling for a trade back and buildup of the OL. Because no quarterback can throw well when on their back.

I am concerned for TB12 for much the same reason. Until our OL can protect him we are one hit away from Blaine Gabbert starting for the rest of the season. Not pretty!

Those of you who constantly berate your fellow posters for being on one side or another are getting VERY tiresome.

Jameis? Who is that? Move on Ivan… People will start realizing his name isn’t the only thing of Jameis’ that’s been in your mouth.

Now watch Brady run it effectively without the built in excuses!!!!!!!

With Brady he’s probably seen and orchestrated every formation know to man. It’s just a matter of learning the verbiage and nuances.

    Alaskan,

My post was making fun of all the people still mad that Jameis is gone.

I couldn’t be happier now that the big turd is off our team.

  10. JimmyJack Says:

Precisely what I thought. No freaking way they were changing this whole offense for Brady. Not did Tom probably want them to. I’m sure he wants a few tweaks but he wasn’t wanting to run the check down Patriots offense.

If he wanted that he would have went to Indy or Tennessee. He came to Tampa Bay to run a potent offense. You don’t run a five yard over the middle offense with all these weapons we have.

My guess is the same offense but will look different because Tom will be more decisive and use the shorter routes more often(maybe even add a few). But he will be looking to take his shots and setup for them. And we will probably see more concepts added for RBs in the passing game…….which is something Bruce has installed in the offense already just didn’t have the back to run it much. Will be fun to see how it all plays out!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

If u go look at film when Jameis made mistakes was mainly his eyes. Other times the check down was there waiting. Although last year was his best in terms of accuracy he still made mental mistakes. Five years in mental mistakes should be diminishing. The biggest disadvantage was he put us consistently behind and forced to play catch up that puts pressure on offense defense and special teams. Just if Tom can come here and not put us in a hole to start game itโ€™s an upgrade. Go back and look at film constant body language from receivers on missed opportunities tells it all. Iโ€™m sure Brady will throw picks and the JW fans will be u see but trust me it wonโ€™t be 30 of them. GamePass is free right now take advantage and go back and look at games in slow motion if you need to.

  15. Ndog Says:

So a guy that has NEVER sat in the pocket holding the ball waiting for all these deep routes to get open is going to do that behind this oline for the first time at 43 years old.

    What could go wrong?

But no worries we have BLAINE GABBERT!!!!!!!!

At first I thought it would be difficult to start liking TB just because he’s joined the Bucs. I just got so tired of seeing NE have so much success year after year while playing in such a weak a$$ division, virtually assuring them of 5-6 wins every year from the get go, regardless of who else was on the schedule. And all the Belicheat/Brady storylines, year-after-year, just got sooooo-old. Geez, as a Bucs fan I’m obviously an underdog rooter, ya know?

But I’m coming around to it. There’s no doubt the Bucs will be a better team simply because TB is here. His presence will change the locker room, his teammates, and this organization from day one, and it’s been long over due. There’s frankly not a better player in the league to do that either.

I only hope the changes will last long after he’s gone because there’s just been way too many decades of embarrassing Buccaneer football since ’76, it’s time for us veteran Bucs fans to enjoy a decade or two of being proud of this team for showing up every year and playing as a perennial contender. Even bringing Gruden on board couldn’t accomplish that.

So regardless of the record at the end of this first season, if TB can bring pride back to all of us loyal Bucs Fans and to the organization, and play meaningful games in December and January for something other than a higher first round draft pick, than this should turn out to the best move the Licht and the Glazers have ever made, bar none.

And if TB can bring TB to the next SuperBowl, too? Well then, that would just be the sauce on my smoked ribs, the icing on my cake and the olive in my Kettle One martini!!

    Let’s go TB&TB!

qp: there were a lot of people in Tampa and Nashville who would have taken that basket full of picks from Chip Kelly to trade down and let him get his golden boy Mariota. While Winston probably was not the complete bust Mariota was, he is not a starting qb anymore either (unless someone like the Jags make a run at him if they do not get a qb in the draft). Speaking of QB, I really hope Arians is not putting all his chips in on Gabbert as a backup. Hopefully someone has caught Arians’ eye in the up coming draft and while I believe the Bucs should get OL help in the first, it would not surprise me if they go with one of the qbs that are on the 2nd tier (below the top 4 or 5) on day 2…. Lets see. But yeah, with this OL as it stands and the possibility that Gabbert is one play away from getting snaps, the Bucs need to get a better contingency plan……

I keep hearing people refer to our O-Line and how bad it needs improvement. I suggest you do some more research. Jameis sacked himself on a regular basis due to his inability to read the field and holding the ball WAY longer than needed. Thr Bucs O-line allowed some of the highest time-to-throw numbers in the league. Tom Brady won’t have that problem.
