So Far So Good For Gay

November 19th, 2019

Long range record.

It is still early in his career but it seems the Bucs got a helluva bargain in selecting rookie Matt Gay in the fifth round of the draft.

Sunday, Gay nailed a 55-yard field goal on the opening drive of the second half. On long-range field goals, Gay is pretty accurate, 4-of-5 on attempts over 50 yards. On field goals of over 40 yards, Gay has made 12-of-14.

In fact, Gay became the best Bucs rookie kicker on long-range field goals after Sunday’s game. His 12 field goals over 40 yards is now one better than Patrick Murray (2014).

Yeah, Joe knows Gay choked badly in a loss to the Giants at the Den of Depression. In the long run, that has turned into a blessing.

The Bucs should be playing for the draft. If Murray had beaten the Giants, that (now) meaningless win would have really hurt the Bucs’ draft position next spring.

    Just to clarify:

The video on this link also serves as a Buc Fan Training video.

Using the same math it took to find a reliable kicker, we should find 2 quality DB’s in about 8-10 more years…

  3. stpetebucsfan Says:

Hurt our chances for what? A 50=50 shot at getting an actual NFL player. ONE player. Oh the horrors!!!

Can somebody provide the examples where losing and moving up in the draft really worked out. I’m sure there may be a few. How about us. Are you telling us that if we move up we can get another JW and five years of erratic play and fan division. Gee that’s the ticket. Let’s lose so we can get ONE player.

Now can someone else research the number of times teams tried to move up by losing on purpose?

  4. Little Bo Peep 🤡❗️ Says:

When your best player is a Kicker in a NFL Draft (Gay was the Bucs 5th Round Selection from Utah in the 2019 NFL Draft), Thats gives THE YUCKS A F- GRADE 😀❗️You never use a draft pick on a kicker. Like the Late Buccaneers HC John McKay once said, “Kickers are like grass, they grow. There a dime a dozen 🤡❗️“

  5. Colonel Angus Says:

Hit that kick and we are 4-6, Ref doesn’t blow an early whistle, maybe (5-5), get the coin toss right, maybe we beat Seattle and are (6-4). 3 plays may be the deciding factor on a 3 game swing. I know you make your own luck, but damn. Bucs Luck.

Hopefully that’s another problem solved now focus on the secondary don’t let Jason draft another DB. BUILD THE TRENCHES an bring in somebody a body to help this secondary. PLEASSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEE

  9. Slugglife Says:

We solve one issue per year and by 2026 we might finish third in the NFC South.

  10. FortMyersDave Says:

I agree Angus but on the other side of the coin the Bucs got lucky in Carolina that VH3 actually made a play on McCaffery, Bucs benefited from a non call vs the Cards at the end of that game on Dean that could have put the game into OT and they were very fortunate that Suh got that late TD vs the Rams to thwart what would have been a game tying drive so as easily as the Bucs could be sitting at 6 wins they could also have been down there with the Bengals and the Skins with 0 or one win. Joe is right, it would be best for the Bucs if they finish 3-13 or 4 dash 12 and get a top 5 draft pick but there are some in the locker room who probably are not willing to tank as they are playing for their future as well. Granted, the Bucs will probably make a lot of dumb mistakes and more than likely will find ways to lose to Indy, the Jags, Detroit and the ATL twice but they could snake a couple of wins from these other bottom feeders especially if someone like the Lions go full fledged tank (they are 1-6 since their fast start) or Koetter manages to let the Bucs steal one with one of his vanilla game plans (likely on the final game of the season and just watch it royal jam up the Bucs draft slot like the win over the Saints a couple of seasons back)…… As a fan we all want our team to win but it reaches a point in the season where it is time to play for the future and that includes the draft and getting younger players some reps (if you have the talent on the bench which sadly the Bucs lack)…..

Yep, draft position has really paid dividends…In play for another top 5 pick!

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So, the Matt Gay miss vs the Giants is now a good thing?

How about OJs turnover vs New Orleans?

What about Jameis’ two picks early vs Tenn?

I guess we would have been better off losing that game to Carolina….

We could go on and on…..according to Joe, it’s a good thing we lost.

    The losing culture loves losers….

  13. Dewey Selmon Says:

Our kicker might be named Gay, but his kicks are straight!

  14. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

Still not worth the draft pick. It’s a freaking kicker.

  15. Robert Says:

gay should rub off on JW….

  16. Slugglife Says:

    Good one Robert.

  17. Pelbuc61 Says:

Reliance on an early draft has really solidified the roster, right? As long as Licht is here, the draft picks will not be good. Proof is on display every Sunday.

  18. down in the dirt doug Says:

Lets stop bashing Licht for a moment and list some things he has done well.
One–he is good at jumping in the swimming pool.
two–he has a nice smile and is a good guy.
three–he has the owners thinking he is a good gm.
    four-he is friends with BA.
five-twenty percent of his picks turn out well.
six-he wants to be loved by players so he overpays most contracts.
THANK YOU lICHT FOR TRYING TO MAKE OUR BUCS WINNERS!!!!!!!

  19. Colonel Angus Says:

I get it FortMyersDave. I just don’t count the good luck the BUCS get. Seems to be a 1 to 3 ratio on that front. 1 good break to 3 bad breaks. Just the fan in me I reckon. Most of that bad luck the BUCS bring on their self.

  20. ChipBuc Says:

Akickinthebucnuts, Hands down that is the funniest video I’ve ever seen. Classic..

  21. Marine Buc Says:

I still can’t believe he missed that GD kick against the Giants. That was a nut buster. But he has been pretty solid since.

  22. unbelievable Says:

I don’t know what’s more pathetic, rooting for losses for a possibly slightly better draft position, or complaining about the Bucs finally getting a solid kicker and only using a 5th round pick to do so.

No wonder this team is a joke, so is the fan base.

  23. Brandon Says:

Murray doesn’t play for the Bucs anymore, it’s Gay that didn’t hit the winning kick. I’m going to put the magic word tmaxicon on here so you can moderate my comment, delete it, and make the change.

  24. Buccfan37 Says:

Gay is OK, when he lines up for a FG attempt I’m waiting for the miss. The Bucs tanking, no, more like the tank tracks over the lost season. A ruffled teams ridges.

  25. Capt. Tim Says:

This guy will have a long NFL career.
    Lord, I hope its here!
