Arians: “This Was As Vanilla As We’ve Been”

September 25th, 2019

Todd Bowles went vanilla

Todd Bowles is known for being a defensive super guru, a guy renowned for using players in roles that fit them, rather than being a slave to a system.

He’s also known for having a complicated defense with a lot of exotic looks and blitzes.

So what happened Sunday against Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones? First, Joe must say that Jones was phenomenal. What a debut for the kid. Hopefully, history won’t wonder why the Bucs didn’t draft him.

Bucco Bruce Arians has spoken multiple times about how the secondary played poorly and made numerous mistakes, from alignment to decisions and more.

Speaking on Total Access on Buccaneers Radio last night, Arians said it was “real ugly” for defensive backs during Monday meetings. But he also added that their failure was surprising because what the defense asked of them was basic. “This was as vanilla as we’ve been.”

Joe doesn’t want to read too much between the lines here, but why so vanilla against a rookie QB making his first start? Was that flavor more a decision about what Bucs coaches had seen previously from their young defensive backs?

Change is inevitable regarding the defensive plan for Sunday against the mighty Rams. “Vanilla” against them would be a huge mistake.

BA and his coaching staff of 100 are starting to look incompetent. The excuses are getting old already.

I can appreciate wanting to have your players’ back, but I thought he was Mr. Accountability. ??

They have to work with what they have. There are still too many holes on the roster this year. Next year, who knows?

It’s week 3 dude! Yes, let’s cut bait now, then any coach that loses a game we fire him too.
I know you’re hopeless but if someone else doesn’t see that this is a different type of football team then the last few years, well … there’s just no helping you guys.

Sure hope Suh can provide a better insight into how to exploit that defense but I’m expecting it to be the game that shows it’s time to start scouting replacements for our tackles and it’s a really bad time for jensen to have back issues, one of the highest paid with back issues we need to revamp the online it just isn’t good enough

  11. doctor_berto Says:

Thats what happens when you have small, slow defensive backs. How you do miss on nearly all of them?

  12. Hodad Says:

Bowles defense sucked in NY, it will turn out sucking here.

  13. NPRSageBoy Says:

Goff and Kupp are gonna eat Bowle’s lunch on Sunday.

Different how? Hapless secondary. JW still up and down like a roller coaster, still letting rookie or back up QB shred our D, kickers that can’t make chippies. Really questionable coaching decisions….what have I missed?

We are better at stopping the run, I’ll give you that..but the rest? P.S. I went to my first game in ‘77, so I’ve been here to see plenty.

Frankly, the defense looks A LOT better.. Period end of story. There is room for improvement it is still only BA & Bowles first 3 games. I love what I am seeing so far and the fact that this is only the beginning should be getting people excited. The team will only improve from here.

  16. Jmarkbuc Says:

A lot better than last years worst defense in history? Sure. Couldn’t stop a rookie QB with no Saquon… so a lot better is relative.

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

I certainly agree with those who believe this defense is better than last years.

Is that all we expect? Better than one of the worst defenses in all of NFL history. I wish that was hyperbole but sadly statistically it’s a fact.

I expect MORE. I don’t want a defense better than last years…I want a defense good enough to get us to the playoffs this year and in contention for the big trophy next. Anything else is a failure IMHO.

    Missing Ryan Smith 🤔

  19. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs had good pressure on him, but they couldn’t cover the TE, it was that simple in my mind. They also couldn’t cover the TE in week 2 – not shockingly those issues arose after White got hurt. I don’t know if White would have been playing in coverage with the TE, but I do know White has the kind of speed and size you need to do so.

I didn’t really think the defense was super vanilla, they just couldn’t stop anything when it mattered. But that’s what you get with this defense – you make big plays, you give up big plays. I’m fine with that, it’s the cost of doing business, and the defense played way above it’s head in games 1 and 2. This last game the offense needs to not go into a shell with 9 mins left trying to milk a 3 point lead. That’s on Leftwich as I can’t imagine that Arians was saying play for the FG. They did the same thing in Carolina, but got away with it because the defense made an incredible play at the end of the game.

  20. Pittsshore Says:

It was uglier for the head coach. He cost us this game and should have cost us the game against the Panthers. He is one more poor decision away from an assisted living center.

  21. Bucs9) Says:

No, the defense turned vanilla b/c they were blitzing & the secondary was getting torched. So you can actually watch in the 2nd half were they just stopped & rushed 4 for basically the rest of the game.

I think it’s important Joe to not jump to conclusions. Just like you said after 2 games of the defense playing very well. We shouldn’t let one game no matter how it went allow that to be the whole.

So we’ll see how the Rams game goes. They got 3 WRs as good as any in the league. So I can’t say I’m super confident.
