Jameis Won’t Cash In

May 9th, 2019

Too much still to prove?

This very franchise could be at a massive crossroads come December.

What would and/or could happen if the Bucs are marching toward another top-five pick in the draft and an even more harrowing thought: America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston is struggling?

Could there be a complete and total organizational housecleaning with Team Glazer hitting the reset button and starting back from ground up?

There is one thing that the creator, curator and overall guru of “Pro Football Talk,” the great Mike Florio, is willing to lay cash on. Whatever happens with Jameis, Florio is taking a stab that he won’t get a big-monied, long-term deal after this season, the final season of his current contract.

Buccaneers G.M. Jason Licht has made it clear that they’re taking a wait-and-see approach with Winston, whose contract expires after 2019. Some would say there’s no reason to wait, because they’ve arguably seen enough from the first overall pick in the 2015 draft. Coach Bruce Arians told ESPN during the draft that Winston needs to stop “throwing the ball to the other team.” That’s easier said than done, especially when Winston has a bad habit of trying to do more than his physical abilities will allow.

Well, Bucco Bruce Arians was hired with the express purpose of getting Jameis back on track as one of the up-and-coming young quarterbacks. And Arians has a history of building quarterbacks, or at least fixing them.

If Jameis, heaven forbid, becomes the first quarterback Arians can’t put back on track, what then?

This past winter, Joe was chatting with an NFL general manager (not named “Jason Licht”) at the East-West Shrine practices at the Fruitdome in St. Petersburg. Joe and the general manager were talking about Jameis and the hiring of Arians. The general manager looked Joe in the eye and said, “Jameis is in good hands now.”

Now or never in year 5!

I’m so excited and I hope Jameis breaks out and realizes his potential as our QB and former #1 overall pick.

    Go Bucs!

If it’s not up to snuff, then cut bait.

I think the bucs savior and only true hope Jameis is in good hands finally that being said unfortunately, BA is in the hands of the glazers hands…. not good, not good at all!

Let’s take a look back on some glazer highlights….

    10 Basement Titles
16 Years since last meaningful win
11 years since last meaningful game
6 Post Season Wins in Franchise History
Proud Owners of Numerous WORST OF NFL HISTORY records for offense and defense
1 expired Lombardi that low standard bucfan can’t let go off….
    5 Failed Regimes
More Jerry Springer moment than Jerry Springer
Proud Owners of the Worst Winning Percentage

So yes Jameis is in good hands but poor BA is screwed!!!!

  4. JustaBucfan Says:

I don’t know about that. JW is gonna have to play “no risk it no biscuit” Farve-ish type football if we’re to outscore our opponents. He will have to match the other teams output if we’re to have a chance while under duress because of a weak offensive line and the fact we can’t generate a pass rush giving the bad guy all day to find open receivers. I bet JW sets a career season total of turnovers, while running for his football life. It will be another race to the bottom for the first pick in next years draft.

  5. louden Says:

well, Winston just had an awfully talented team with Florida State..

And the current state includibg this very offseason with the Suckaneers:

    it is what it is..
Suckaneers suck because of the FrontOffice they suck at talent evaluating and @ Roster building join the
    Fire Licht Tonight movement !!

  6. louden Says:

    curent state of the Suckaneers:

    O-line: rotten
    >> will lead to bad rushing game (especially short yardage)
    >> will lead to Jameis being in much more pressure
    >> will hurt the Passing Game
    —————–

    WR/TE
only realy good ones that are not so easy to replace:

    Godwin, OJ Howard, Mike Evans

    rest is (easy) replaceable
only one injury away from being less than average = WR/TE corps..

    no good depth..

so Offense isn’t in very good shape (=SuperBowl Contender Talent)

don’t get me started with the Defense..

just let me tell you, that besides the QB – the two Lines define a teams backbone..

the O line is rotten (Dotson is lacking and old, even if some dump people are still talking him up, as if he is an good RT – don’t give me sh.. it about some gradings by some sites – he’s simply just not good – lacks strengh, gets overmauled way too often in run and pass game..)

RG: is it possible to get worse?
    Marpet: i’m good with him
Center: pffff, meeeh @ 10 Mio per year ?!
LT D.Smith = Dotson , maybe average, easy replaceable, could have had drafted many many better players instead of Smith back then, and time and time again

but Suckaneers suck @ drafting.. and @ evaluating talent..

so they even decided to throw alot of money @ Donovan Smith
and thats one of the reasons why Buccaneers are in Cap Hell, even though they got sh.. itty Talented Roster..

MLB’s have lower value, which means you can easily get an capable MLB per Draft or FreeAgency, while pass rushers come at premium cost (FreeAgency or generall high draft pick)

this year – many great D-liner were available (Clemson guys, and EdOliver the DT the Suckaneers weren’t drafting, will be one heck of a player barring injurys..)

and a good DT makes whole defense better (against the run and pass), thats why they have more value then MLB’s and this guy was a freaking sure shot of top talent, while our new MLB may have great Potential, and looks to be a okay or good player, the DT had more value >>> better prospect (pretty much best player available) and we only have/had VitaVea and McCoy as good DT’s..

as all teams tend rotate a lot, you can be very happy to have 3 very good ones.. especially since injurys happen all the time and MCoy is nearing the End of his career…

why is it that i can see it, but the guy getting lots of money to do it for are living is too stupid to realize all that?!

year after year i complain about things like:

getting rid of good players (Michael Bennett as Steve White always said he should have played more)
Matt Bryant (one of the best Kickers in the NFL)

and now some fans even want to cut McCoy
(when he should easily still be worth at least a 2nd round pick)
he is old but good – maybe not very good, thats debatetable, but he is way better than anything the Bucs have at DT besides VitaVea.. but Vea is a different type of player/DT..

and they spend too much money on too weak players like Dotson, Donovan Smith, Jensen

    and in terms of drafting:

very often, there is still good talents on the board, but the Suckaneers just seem to like lesser talent..

year after year i say: draft this one if available, and the Suckaneers even get the oppertunity, but they decide to get another future Suckaneer and the player i wanted goes on to have good career…

realy year after year the same BS..

i am better than the whole “professional” Suckaneers Organisation @ evaluating talent..

    it’s laughable
because i am an arm chair GM..

fans should start to boykott this Clown-Show until the Glazers decide to sign an actual intelligent football mind that is able to evaluate talent and to build a good Roster/Team..

this Suckaneer team is full of holes, is lacking talented players and it’s even in SallaryCapHell…
    what the hfreaking heck..

    Bucsfans, join the Fire-Licht-Tonight movement!

  11. pick6 Says:

if he’s lousy it’s easy. if he’s up and down it probably comes down to who else can be signed or drafted. if he plays fairly well or really well, it comes down to Jameis

he can do what he did as a rookie and tell his agents to quickly sign a fair deal or he can play the kirk cousins game and play under a franchise tag or two while proving he is worth top 5 money or higher

you don’t have to be the best in the league to decide to hold out to become the highest paid in the league – among others in recent years kirk cousins, joe flacco, and matt stafford have held that title while being firmly outside the top 10 performers at that position

i think if he plays well and doesn’t push to be north of $25 million, they’ll give him a long term deal and 2 years guaranteed with the necessary conduct clauses and whatnot.

  12. The Buc Realist Says:

    @dooshlarue

Its funny from 813broccoli because that was the day and news broke that crash test dummy winston was suspended for 3 games and ultimately sunk the whole season!!!!!!!!! and part of that deal allegedly was that the bucs would lose a home game for London for the reduced “no contest” plea!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2019 will reveal answers to the sheep, that the “real” fans already know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmm..thanks for cheering all your readers up Joes…
the best risk reward in the NFL is taking a QB high in the draft and possibly getting 5 years of relatively cheap play from the MOST important position on the field…
that and the standard for comparison for young QB’s now is Patrick Mahomes who is likely to sign a new deal (the first year eligible ) next offseason for a multiyear 200 million dollar package..so we’ll have a season worth of Jameis’s highlights and Mahomes highlights to ponder …..Yep !….only a Buc fan knows the feeling

  14. Mike Johnson Says:

Of course jameis can put all the contract/money issues to rest by just..ballin out.
He say he wants to be up there with Brady and the best of the best. So..we waitin. Show us. There is no time like ..rat now baby..this year.

Byron Leftwich gave a very astute analysis of Jamies in his last press conference.
Basically, he said the Bucs have put Jamies in a bad position by giving up so many points and not having a running game which has made the Bucs one dimensional.

I hope the defense and running game see massive improvements this year.

  19. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

If Jamesi plays like Brad Johnson he’ll have a great year….

  20. Syl Says:

Look at the amount of interceptions Luck and Peyton Manning threw their 4th years, and they both had a considerably better team, and better coaches. Give him a decent defense, and an average running game. I think the team is in good hands.

  21. pelbuc Says:

The fact that he has “still too much to proove” going into his 5th year says all you need to know. It’s not like the Bucs are 9-7 and keeps missing out on the playoffs. JW is not the answer and since the Bucs are cellar dwellers, why not get the best available QB in next year’s draft and start over again. Let’s not forget JW is one infraction away from banishment. Good luck and good riddance. Please ship Licht out as well. I’ll never understand the owners, coaches and GM’s allegiance to JW.

  22. JimmyJack Says:

It doesn’t matter what any of us say now. Last time I checked there are 16 games left to determine that. & A fanbase that has patiently been waiting for a playoff berth, minimum.

This is a fun time to be a Buc fan cause we have new leadership running it now. This will be a different team in 2019. And that’s a great thing. We need change badly. Anybody that disagrees needs to check the scoreboard.

If this new era fails I’ll jump on the hatewagon. Until then this coaching staff has fully earned any bit of hope I have for them!!!!

  23. Eric Says:

QB1 is not the issue. Never has been. No defense. No wins. Remember the 5 game winning streak at the end of the 2016 season. Defense is and always has been the issue. Just think about how many games we could have won if the defense made on stop. Definitely play off’s in 2016 and a winning record the last two years.

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Talk about speculation!!!

Wow…..all of this is true, but what if?……and, what if?….and then of course there is what if? And, when all else has been exhausted….you are left with what if?

  28. JimmyJack Says:

Pelbuc……That’s doesn’t say it all. And that is the beautiful thing about sports……That’s why Kurt Warner was working at Publix and that why Warren Moon played in the NFL………..It’s also why Ryan Leaf was nothing more then an ordinary bust and why Mike Mumula place in the HOF was taken by our boy!!!

Try to make sense of it……you never will. But the least you can do is enjoy the ride cause it only goes around once!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  29. Buc4evr Says:

If Jameis doesn’t get a new contract he will go somewhere else and win the SB. Jason Gump has created a perennial dumpster fire through his drafting and signing of big money free agents that don’t produce. Gump has been slow to effectively deal with the O-line and Defensive problems, always putting Jameis in a situation where he is scrambling to try to catch up. No defense, no protection and no running game , but it’s the QB’s fault. Steve Young part 2. Fire Gump, not Jameis.

Jamie’s will be fine. No running game and no defense even Favre will be wild throwing. The best football from jameis was when Doug and sims were running and defense was ok. He will have a decent year not pro bowl. Bucs should sign him now and get a discount.

  36. stpetebucsfan Says:

Que Sera Sera…whatever will be will be.

I’m hoping there’s a lot of kvetching over how much money is thrown at JW for 2020. If we are all beotching over huge amounts of money it means JW played well and we made the playoffs.

In fact I’ll say this….if this team makes the playoffs…it won’t matter how well JW played…it means he played well enough to get the first goal…reach the playoffs. Let’s reach the playoffs then we can start setting higher bars.

  37. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

No way Arians fixes Jameis, the defense, the run game, defense and the kicking game in one off season.

If he can fix two of those things 7-8 wins is possible
Fix 3 units and 8-10 wins is a given
    Fix all 4 he’s a god

  38. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

BA—hope you have a plan that has yet to be revealed to bring in a quality runner and a quality pass rusher.I know you are still evaluating and will cut the dead wood in time.We need the money and Jameis can’t make it without one more lineman and a top runner.

  75. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Breaking “team” records is not impressive when the history of Bucs qbs is not very good at all

Breaking NFL records for “age” and yards when the league rules favor passing is unimpressive

Manning was never benched for a journeyman backup…

Jameis just needs to play consistent and not cost the Bucs games

  76. BucsMinsterFueller Says:

We are talking about giving this guy a long term 100 million dollar contract?
He hasn’t won an away game since 2016!
He had 3 wins last year…3! And that was with the best group of receivers in the league.
We have the same O line, the same running backs yet half of those receivers and you expect him to get better?
I won’t miss Jameis after this year.

  77. Jimmy T Says:

Here we go again with the weekly NEGATIVE JAMEIS TAKE! No one can succeed with a D that gives up 30 a game! Carson Palmer was a pick magnate but the scarfs overcame that and won games because Arians had a great D and a coaching staff that was NOT CLUELSS like the BUCS staff. Jameis will be fine

  78. T REX Says:

I want to win and not have an embarrassment as our QB. This is the last year of Winston.

Finally, we can move in another direction.

  79. catcard202 Says:

They are undecided on JW3…But passed on Drew Lock in the 2nd & reached for Bunting @ 39…. Makes total sense in Licht’s head, but NO ONE else.

If your not sold on JW3… You take the 1st rd talent that slides! Lock will be a STUD in this league. Mark it down.

(With the consistent blunders by this FO, it amazes me that the Glazers haven’t cleaned house from top-to-btm….Any armchair GM – Bucs FAN could assemble consistent 5-11/6-10 teams -w/o a scouting dept – for a hell of a lot less of Team Glazers $$$!!!)

When you down by 20 points don’t blame the QB for throwing interceptions.

you start to blame the QB when 2 of his interceptions resulted in touchdowns for the other team…
