Former GM Lauds Bowles

January 23rd, 2019

Thumbs up for new Bucs DC.

One former NFL general manager is of the mind Todd Bowles got his knees cut out from under him in New Jersey, and the Jets’ pain is the Bucs’ gain.

Bowles, of course, was launched after four seasons as Jets head coach. Gang Green failed to make the playoffs during Bowles’ stint in New Jersey. But Michael Lombardi, a former NFL suit who worked for Bill Walsh, Al Davis and Bill Belicheat, saw a coach that was hung out to dry by what Lombardi believes was an inept front office.

In a recent edition of his Ringer.com podcast, Lombardi briefly discussed the Jets and Bowles when the subject of new Jets coach Adam Gase came up.

Of course, Bowles is the new defensive coordinator of the Bucs.

“They have to get better players,” Lombardi said of the Jets. “I know they fired Todd Bowles, but they need talent pretty much everywhere on their offense. … It’s going to take Gase more time than turning around Sam Darnold. They have to get better talent. In the four years Todd Bowles was there, the talent just wasn’t any good.”

Later when talking about Bucco Bruce Arians and the Bucs, Lombardi added, “I love the hire of Todd Bowles. He will make them better on defense.”

Of course, former Jets linebacker Bart Scott has run his mouth about Bowles in the past but Scott, who now works New York sports radio and occasionally sports TV, is a well-documented fool so Joe really cannot take anything he says seriously.

We will see…..can’t get much worse than Mike Smith….

  2. tmaxcon Says:

Knees taken out by jets owners just wait until he is decapitated by worst sports owners on 2 continents. No human can survive jets and bucs. He’s better off riding a barrel over Niagara falls

  3. Larry Says:

At this point Bowles will have the same problem in Tampa that he had in his last job. NOT ENOUGH GOOD PLAYERS!! That is on Jason Licht. the Bucs have some good offensive players but the defense doesn’t. Too many free agents that didn’t work out and too many draft picks that didn’t work out. that is a league wide problem with bad teams. Just not enough good players and not enough depth.

  4. AlteredEgo Says:

So….reading between the lines Bowles was assured the D gets priority in FA and the draft…..Licht whiffed again and again in FA and favored offense in his drafts….except for VH3….who hopefully will finally blossom in 2019….the football Gods will have to smile on the Bucs because we got more holes than a Detroit highway

Vh3 is just another local feel good story FAILURE just like the rest of the bums murphy, king etc etc etc…. vh3 is short, slow and stupid those traits can NOT be fixed or coached. He could not blossom or look good floating in a toilet bowl with Myron lewis and sabby

I think the talent is there across the NFL. The great differentiator is player development and coaching. If you look at the Patriots who seem to pick at the bottom of the draft every year, somehow those players turn out to be solid. Are the Patriots just so adept at evaluating talent or are they great at developing and coaching?

  7. Shane247 Says:

Good development & coaching will make OK players good and good players great. MPGA!

  8. R.O. Says:

Tmax your verbal diarrhea is laughable. Your ignorant statements make you look just plain old stupid.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Not only do the Patriots pick at the bottom of the first, they are usually at the bottom of every round…….they know who to pick and how to make them as good as they can be……this is the difference between a winner and a team’s fanbase that wants to lose to get higher picks.

Let’s hope our #5 ends up being a great player…..no guarantee.

why should they bother drafting or signing anyone after all they are in salary cap hell with no hope. maybe they can get some work release athletes at a discount since the cap is the only issue with this mickey mouse franchise has.

    Fear Losing Not the Cap…

  12. PSLBob Says:

Shane and TampabayBF, couldn’t agree more. The players drafted high by the Bucs are typically high on all team’s draft boards. It’s the development and scheming to their strengths that has been lacking.

then why am I always right???? You may not like the truth but I speak it. I have not been wrong about a single buc player in years…

I am assuming you are a gaytor fan…. the last good gaytor’s prison boyfriend needs a pen pal maybe you should connect…

bowles was coaching behind the 8ball…..lol….tell us something we dont know….lol….

    #REALISTKNOWSNOTHING!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  16. ben Says:

If Licht is picking the players in the draft … bucs may not have the talent either.

  17. Shane247 Says:

Ben, we’ll all see what a difference good coaching and player development makes. Some of the players people have written off may surprise us all.

  18. SOEbuc Says:

Let Kwon go. Replace him with a good, vet LB that won’t cost as much. SPAWN=VON in 2019. Don’t know how Pat Paterson who was asking for a trade last year wouldn’t be a lock down decision with Bowels and Cardinals coaching experience with the rest of a young secondary.

  19. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I will believe it when I see it.

Arians told Bowles he can do whatever he wants with this defense. I question the wisdom of that (Koetter gave Smith too much rope too), but we’ll see. To be honest, I don’t know a lot about Bowles at this point, so I can only go by what others are saying. Outside Tampa, his rep is not as stellar among fans as Tampa fans think.

Still, fans are fickle and are hardly experts…so I will wait to see how he does.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Ghengis Kwon needs to stay. Smith did not use him right and he is the QB of this defense, only just starting to come into his leadership role.

He;s probably my second favorite defensive player on the team, second to JPP (who I have wanted in Tampa for years).

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    ben Says
“If Licht is picking the players in the draft …”

    Oh, cut the cr@p.

Jason Licht is the best drafting GM this team has ever had. Better even than Rich McKay.

  22. tmaxcon Says:

kwon is another player low standard and delusional bucfan confuses excitement and popularity with being good football player. kwon is damaged goods and no longer worth a second of the bucs time. kwon was never that damn good to begin with. let him walk… i will never understand the way bucfan clings to crappy players… the love fest is laughable at best.

  23. TOM Says:

Whatever it takes to get Peterson.

  24. JimmyJack Says:

Bonzai…….Nobody wants to hear about that crap.

The man had a Top Ten pick last year. He had three 2nds. And had 2 thirds. Meanwhile we lost no key played and added a Pro Bowl caliber DE and the best FA Center.

Yet that all equated the 0 extra wins. Can’t give the guy a bit of credit without a single result. This is not how any of this works.

  25. BucEmUp Says:

Cant wait for this guy to show how playing in the same schemes, not disguising looks and playing 15 yard cushions will make any defense look like crap and prove these fools wrong

  26. tmaxcon Says:

    bonzi

mackay was a garbage gm just a league politician nothing more… he could not field an offense and whyce built the defense. i know you fools like reweriting history but just like dungy the clown mckay was nothing more than a popular failure in tampa. arthur blank could not strip the gm title from mckay fast enough.

try re-watching some of dungy the clown and mckays offenses and tell me he drafted well LOL… you people are so freaking lost.

Seems like a lot of “Lauding” going on today Joe.

  28. Drunkinybor Says:

Isn’t he the guy that said Doug Pederson the superb owl winning coach, was the worst hire in history. Essentially saying he will never ever succeed and Pederson was a bum. I’m not going to take his word on anything after that.
