The Problem With The Pro Bowl

December 19th, 2018

Voting on the Pro Bowl.

After rosters were announced last night, a lot of Bucs fans are irritated that Mike Evans or Jason Pierre-Paul or Lavonte David or Gerald McCoy did not receive enough votes to play in the Pro Bowl.

Without trying to say so, Bucs Bit-O-Honey-snacking, Ozark-watching, yams-eating coach Dirk Koetter sort of blew the whistle on why the selection process is flawed.

When Koetter was asked how much time he spends on voting for Pro Bowl players, he had this enlightening response today.

“More than I care to be spending on it,” Koetter said. “Of course, I admit I’m not qualified to vote for guys I haven’t seen.”

And that’s a big one, though it makes sense. Coaches are too busy watching tape of opponents to take valuable time to watch tape of teams that are not on their schedule to make a “qualified” vote, to use one of Koetter’s words.

So basically the Pro Bowl is a popularity vote. They recognize a guy’s name from a highlight on NFL Network or BSPN, and voila, he gets a vote.

Coaches voting counts for one-third of the selection process along with players’ votes and fans’. Having coaches vote sounds good and sounds trustworthy, but in truth, that’s not really a reliable process.

when you have zero pro bowlers, the league is quietly whispering in your ear…”clean the f’in house”

  2. Season Is Over Says:

There is no problem with the Pro Bowl. This is the type of respect the Bucs receive because they are a perennial loser for a decade. Quite simple. The losing is deeply ingrained in not only the Tampa fans, but fans around the country. The Bucs are the gutter and the next easy win to pull your team out of the funk.

  3. BrianBucs Says:

Don’t believe that for a second. Coaches are always scouting and watching film of other players

  4. Jean Lafitte Says:

if you’re winning you’re popular. You wanna be it the Pro Bowl? …win!

  5. Lamarcus Says:

Yea GMC doesn’t make it and now it’s a popularity contest?

Spinkle that with a lil salt

Joe u know I love you bro but come on…..

  6. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

No big fat softies in the pro bowl!!!!

  7. Buc believer Says:

@Lamarcus… when you question Joe or any of the other GMC apologists on their love for the most fraudulent self promoting player to put pads on the site his appearances in the Pro Bowl. Now that he has been left out it’s all “just a popularity contest” the hypocrisy is staggering!

  8. ElioT Says:

The Bucs have been horrible for over a decade and Capt. Loser always gets his pro-bowl.

Seems everyone else sees what we’ve been screaming for years.

Get this leading loser off the team!

The NFL encourages fan to vote multiple times on their website. Fan of other teams vote more time than Tampa fans do.

  10. Rod Munch Says:

The fact that idiot fans have any say in who is selected is the biggest issue. Fans should never have a say in anything. I don’t go to a movie to have the fans vote on how they want it to end. Fans should sit back, watch the product, enjoy the show, complain about it online, etc, but they shouldn’t have any say in the product outside of what they spend on the product, watching, cheering and booing. To have fans pick who who gets year bonuses, what players get put in the record books, etc… who gives an F what a fan thinks (yes, that includes me, and in particular you).

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You know, the GMC haters just sound pitiful at this point.

They expect one man to do the work of an entire defense. And yet, they all say it was all on the coaches or the lack of talent on the team. Either one of those demonstrates that Gerald was not at fault.

If there isn’t enough talent, then Gerald had no one around him and could not succeed alone. If it was coaching, then it wasn’t Gerald.

But, of course, the haters are too stupid to see how they contradict themselves, even when they use multiple usernames in order to fake support in their assumptions.

  12. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Rod Munch, I agree 100%.

Personally, I think it should be determined by stats that accurately measure who is the best at what they do.

For example, if a CB is a shutdown CB, then passes successfully defended would play a role, along with Ints and tackles.

The problem with the Probowl is two-fold: the selection of the players and the motivation to win.

So far as motivation, give the winning conference two extra roster spots for the year, one offense, one defense. That gives coaches and players a reason to win.

    Rod munch

    Lol. True dat. I agree.

“You old farts should loosen your depends alittle

Kobe Faker is mid 30s (Yes, polk county education suks)

The NFL is all about social media and gamblers”

It’s the Pro-Bowl, and nobody cares.

All-Pro matters, Pro-Bowl does not. Why they continue to play that game is beyond me.

There is never any good news on this website anymore. Sigh. Think I’ll leave it to the haters and trolls.

    Lasted a few hours…per usual…only a cry for attention.

  17. Whatinthebuchappend Says:

We gave him jpp to work alongside with and the dbag is a no show for the season..someone get his cape and a Batman hot coco & tell him to go to his room

  18. Whatinthebuchappend Says:

I’m not a hater folks ! But my God let’s see here , gmc puts on a fake smile , sticks his chest out and walks around like he is a top defensive tackle in this league..on the count of 3 let’s all say at the same time what is the single most thing you will remember GMC for this year…ready ? 1…..2……3…..SORRY BEN ! ….YOU see there ? It’s not even a f___ing big play he made! He is a washed up has been that never was ! Ok , so he got us a couple of 8 sack seasons…whoopity do ! I can not wait until we clean house , get a guy in here that has a plan , get the right GM and coach to execute that plan and really evaluate this roster up and down…if and I mean if he has any smarts , one of the first things he will do is dump this bum & his 100 mil dollar contact

  19. Bucnjim Says:

So the players who vote for the top 100 are wrong as well? You can make a case for Evans even though he’s had some bad drops but the rest are at best just OK!

  20. El Buco Realisto Says:

Another huge problem is the alternates can go 3-4 deep!!!!! too many non deserving pro-bowl titles go to players now a days!!!!!!!!!! Then local media act like the roster is full of talent because of a 3rd or 4th alternates made the popular contest thru the back door!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
