“There Is Absolutely No Adjustment”

October 2nd, 2018

Biting analysis.

Dirk Koetter seems to be a lonely man.

Just about anyone with an NFL connection is taking Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith to the woodshed over the debacle along the shore of Lake Michigan Sunday, the galling, embarrassing effort by his lot in a curb-stomping by the Bears.

Smith, who is guiding a unit hellbent on making NFL history for the most points allowed in a season, was called out by well-respected former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network. Jeremiah learned his football acumen from Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome.

In the NFL video below, Jeremiah explains with some astonishment that Smith never had an answer to the Bears running wheel routes which they used to great success to score touchdowns.

Bears QB will BE 18-34 182 yards 1Td AND 2 INT . NEXT WEEK

  2. Destinjohnny Says:

    Justin Evans…..
He will make a splash play every once in while and everyone will oooh and ahh
But he has more plays like these then u can shake a stick at
Been saying it since draft day
    Alvin Komara was the pick

The guy running from behind completely clueless, that’s MJ Stewart. He did the same on the toss play too.

So again MSmith defenses give up an avg of 24 ppg in 2016 & 17 and are now on pace for 35ppg.

  4. SchwiftyBuc Says:

I wish I could see who’s jersey that was on the first play, Judging by that players apparently lack of athleticism I’d say it’d have to be either Isiah Johnson or MJ Stewart.

  5. Lamarcus Says:

Wow there’s just guys not covering anyone. Just “zoning” out

  6. Chris in WA Says:

Thank god Chicago had a professional courtesy to not run up the score. Tribusky could have easily scored an additional 5 TD’s and 400 Yards in the second half. That’s how helpless the Bucs Back 7 were.

I’m sorry JPP and Vinny Curry have to have their names attached to this putrid defense.

  7. patrickbucs Says:

If we would of drafted Derwin James we would of held them to 21 points

  8. Rod Munch Says:

Said it literally for weeks now, the best defense is an offense that scores 40. Go trade for Bell.

Or better yet do nothing and just waste another year of the lives of the fans as the Glazers countdown to moving the franchise to London. Note the Glazers, even with the stadium improvements, did not sign a lease extension – they refused to do so. So the stadium is now 20 years old – which means we’re about 5 years away from hearing it’s obsolete and the team can’t compete with other cities, like Atlanta with their $1.5billion sphincter roof stadium.

  9. Pat Says:

Honestly, this defense has looked this way on numerous occasions at least since the infamous “Tennessee Ready” game of the Lovie Smith era. This Bears game had the exploits of both the Cardinals game and the Viking game of last year all rolled into one.

  10. D the Bucs fan Says:

Munch you’d trust Koetter to use bell right run him up the middle one first down. Our oline is sorry. Licht hasn’t drafted not one all pro yet. You can’t trust these coaches

  11. unbelievable Says:

That was worse defense than the Julio game last year.

I didn’t think that was possible. It’s obvious Mike Smith is not able to teach whatever he’s trying to run.

    Time to move on.

  12. PlayAction Interactive Says:

    Here’s a secret:
Quit trying to run a system and coach towards the talent you have instead.

  13. Tval Says:

Koetter can’t leave his defense, already gassed, on the field for the entire first half either. It’s as much on his garbage play calling as it is mike smith. Complementary football is key. Mitchell Trubisky is HORRIFIC. THATS THE SCARIEST PART!! Bell is too injury prone to invest in after you wasted a pick on Ronald jones. Take Benny snell(Kentucky) next year, early, in draft and keep your $$$.

  14. Mike Says:

“Jameis is going to be here way longer than I am.”
    Dirk Koetter

    Fire this guy, please.

  15. Guzzie Says:

Dork is begging to get fired, constantly blaming players instead of his incompetent boyfriend Pressbox Smitty, players have been coming to Tampa for years collecting their retirement checks, seems it’s tradition is including coaches now……pathetic

  16. Guzzie Says:

Of course the Bucs are going to beat there Falcons next week and all will be fine

  17. Rick Says:

    Laughable defense. Unreal…

  18. adam from ny Says:

no this game was really baffling defensively…as i watched – i seemed to hear rod serling and the twilight zone in the background…the players all looked lost and zoned out…they weren’t really playing any defense – they weren’t trying to stop da bears and myth blowfitzsky…it’s almost like they were protesting mike smith themselves, and don’t want to play his brand of nonsense any more…

just remember mike smith was in a high box – a shy box…with no underwear on…hangin’ loose like a caboose sippin an ice cold brew and laughing under his breath all the little chuckaneers working the sidelines like bitch-boys…and at halftime he was looking at porn on his computer…this is how winners like smitty do sheet.

  19. adam from ny Says:

jameis plays well in hotlanta….we will blow those filthy birds out like 38-17…then come home to edge out the browns in a big time shootout….then go on the road and split the next two….so we will go 3-1 in the second quarter of the season and be 5-3…then the schedule shapes up for us to make a move the 2nd half of the season

  20. BucEmUp Says:

We all called this before it even happened. What makes matters worse is now the OFFENSE isn’t even adjusting. I don’t understand how anyone can be this had at anything.

    Dirk just lost the team

  21. Defense Rules Says:

@BucEmUp … “Dirk just lost the team.” We may not agree on most things BucEmUp, but Dirk is extremely close to losing this team. I’m convinced that the Bears could’ve doubled the score if they’d chosen to (that’s how bad our defense performed Sunday IMO). Bears defense could’ve held our offense to ONE FG if they’d chosen to (they let off the gas when they started playing some of their backups).

Neither our defense nor our offense had any answers Sunday. That’s on coaching … on BOTH sides of the ball … AND it’s also on the players on BOTH sides of the ball. These are the same coaches (and the same defensive scheme & offensive plan) that held Chicago to a mere SEVEN (7) POINTS last year AND that scored TWENTY NINE (29) POINTS against the Bears. Results from Sunday’s game tell me that (1) the Bears have improved dramatically since last year; and (2) our Bucs have regressed dramatically since last year. LOTS of new personnel AND some devastating injuries haven’t helped to be sure, but no NFL team should ever look THAT bad. Time for the Glazer Boyz to be asking themselves “Are we getting our money’s worth?” from management, from this coaching staff and especially from these players. It’s apparent to me that they can’t be letting Licht & this coaching staff answer that critical question for them.

Hmmm, wonder if (maybe) it’s time for the Glazers to sign on a President of Football Operations (kinda like Jacksonville did)?

  22. JabooBuc Says:

Joe, honestly, this subject is getting old. We all get it. Bucs defense was horrible Sunday. But, it’s the NFL which means Not For Long (Jerry Glanville). IF we see another game like this, I believe a change will be forced.

IF the Bucs can adjust and come back to beat Atlanta, then all will be right with the world.

  23. Darin Says:

We know it already Jeremiah. Its rare for exectutives to call other teams predictable, like a few did last season about the Bucs. The defense didnt change a lick. Offense wasnt predictable because a new guy is calling plays. Teams are studying tape now from this season. Now coaching comes into play more. So it could be another long season. I dont expect Dirk or smitty to outcoach anyone.

  24. Rob Says:

The cryptic comment that Koetter made regarding starting Jameis because “he will be here longer than me” should warrant his being fired IMMEDIATELY! No head coach, on any level, should ever make that comment. I don’t care if you are being sarcastic or whatever but that is a ridiculous comment. I was a Dirk fan and defended him until this. Fire both Koetter and Smith. Let Todd M run the offense, let Buckner run the defense. Let the Linebackers coach interim head coach. Koetter has lost his mind. He admits to already having made up his mind about putting Jameis in the starting lineup after the bye week and explains that he thought this before the Chicago game. That is crazy. Fitz is getting hosed and start Jameis if he deserves it, not because he will be here far longer than the head coach. Idiot. Go Bucs!

  25. Phil Says:

Why Mike Smith still has a job no one can understand. It isn’t like he’s a federal employee and can’t be fired. I wish I could suck at my job and still keep getting paid.

  26. JabooBuc Says:

Rob – agree with you in that i like Dirk and have supported him but this was truly an odd statement. My guess is that this is a poorly thought out way to be over complimentary of JW I guess suggesting that Jamies is some unique talent that will retire here as a HOF’er.

Dirk’s words the last couple of days have me a little concerned as it seems like he just may be over it or that he has been told he’s a dead man walking. This comment coupled with the “Fire everyone” comment may indicate he know’s this is a sinking ship, he has no answers and is not long for Tampa.

I agree with you that these kind of things can’t be said. If the coach has lost hope then the players will write the remainder of the season off. In my mind, the main reason to keep Dirk from last year is that the team seem to play hard in the final 6 games of last year and i thought began to show improvement.

If they drop a deuce against Atlanta, I believe the wheels will come off real quick.

  27. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Koetter says it would be stupid to fire Coach Smith in the middle of the season. That there would be no time to insert a new coach and teach a new Defensive system. My thoughts – how can we be any worse?? We are on path to have the worst defense (points allowed) on record – in HISTORY!

  28. Bucsfanman Says:

Jaboo- This is now year #3 with Smitty. How much more evidence do you need to make that judgement? His defenses have been ranked 23rd, 32nd, and are currently 31st in yards allowed. If we’re being generous and go with points: 15th, 22nd, 32nd. (’16-18)
Either way you look at it, it’s clear regression.
What if we beat Atlanta and give up another 30+ pts and 400+ yards? What if Cleveland is the same? How long before you can’t outscore the opponent?
    It’s a slippery slope!

  29. LakeLand Says:

Brett Grimes- 35 year old slow, undersized CB
Isaiah Johnson-2nd year undrafted special team player, with his first career start
    Justin Evans- 2nd year player
    MJ Stewart- Rookie
    Carlton Davis- Rookie
Marcus Williams-15 starts in 5 years
Ryan Smith- 3rd year player converted to Safety, then converted back to CB,mostly special team player

Is this the talent that fans are bragging about
Is this the best Jason Licht can do?

    ***************************************************************

DR, you’ve just agreed with what ive been saying the past 2years…….under this staff we have gotten blown out numerous times on the road(buffalo,minny,N.O.,arz)….and the excuse from the players and coaches is we came out “flat” or as Dotson said yesterday, “relaxed”….that falls on coaching….coaches are suppose to have this team prepared, focused and ready to execute a game plan…..they fail every time…..that falls on coaching….

this is the same bucs team that embarrassed the bears last year but this year they have an quality starting QB at the helm instead of a life long back up….the bears philosophy never changed from last year….they ran the ball and played good defense…..they bucs on the other hand still don’t have one…..that falls on coaching….

and lastly, its not a surprise this team as a whole has regressed because each year we’ve seen player after player regress….(LVD, kwon, VHG, spence), and this year it looks like benenoch, marpet j.evans are regressing…..

so as ive been saying for 2 going on 3years now, the problem is coaches and scheme not players and talent…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  31. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

1st TD was man and the LB was beaten on an island. (Talent/no pass rush)

2nd and 3rd TD’s was cover 3 and in both instances the corners left their zones to trail the receivers. (Blown converge)

Same old Bucs, glad I stop watching games last year. Same old BS for 10 F’ing years.

This franchise was build on defense and it has died on defense.

  32. Defense Rules Says:

@813bucboi … “so as ive been saying for 2 going on 3years now, the problem is coaches and scheme not players and talent.” You say that I just agreed with you 813, but you apparently quite reading what I wrote when you found something you could use. I didn’t say it was ALL on the coaches & scheme … I said it was on BOTH the coaches AND the players. And BTW, I hold Jason Licht responsible for BOTH of those.

But what I think is more important is this: “Given what we saw Sunday, how does this franchise move forward?” We’ve only completed the 4th game of the season, and yes, we are 2-2 at this point. Will things improve IF some of our starters make it back from the injured list? Do we need to get rid of some players & find some more respectable replacements? Is it wise to start replacing coaches with three-fourths of the season still left? Is punting an option?

i don’t know the answer to any of those right now BucBoi (wish I did). I am convinced however that this franchise desperately needs a grown-up to oversee football operations. Call him a ‘President of Football Operations’ or just call him ‘That Guy’ for right now, but for heaven’s sake Glazers, hire someone with experience & demonstated competence to fix this disaster. Enough is enough.

  33. unbelievable Says:

Totally agree about president of football operations.

In fact many of us, including you I’m sure DR, have been hollering about hiring someone like that for years. All the way back to the Schiano and possibly even the Raheem days.

I just wish the Glazers got it.

  34. Gambelero Says:

It’s going to be tough with Conte out. Just not the same defense with him out.

  35. Gruden4President Says:

They need to fire them all from Licht on down.

  36. Trench War Says:

…and Smith is in the booth with the luxury of still photos and instant replay and still can’t adjust. What? Is he up there smoking crack?

  37. Buc1987 Says:

    Trench.

    I’m dyin’ ova here….

I’m not watching this defense the rest of the season. I’m leaving the room. Folks going to Ray Jay….my advice to you is to look away when the D’s out there.

It’s not good for your mental health….and possibly physical too!

It worked for me in 2011. That’s how I got by. I just came back in the room when my wife told me the other team was kicking off back to us after they scored.

    Try it….you might like it.

  38. Dubcity06 Says:

I see the safety, the CB, and the LB… but especially the LB in coverage be horrible all in one route combo

  39. stpetebucsfan Says:

I think Smitty has to go…now so the new guy has a couple of weeks to learn his talent…unless of course it’s Duff or Buckner.

Letting Smitty walk will send a major message to the team as well as the fans.

  40. Buccernutter Says:

Man u guys are all over the place every week lol. Such a short term memory in the NFL. 2 excellent games that could have been blowouts. A tough close loss to a usual annual contender and one blowout. Yet we’re all talking Dirk has lost the team and players won’t fight blah blah blah. Gtfoh

We’re 2-2 when a lot of you though 1-4. This offense has elite potential and the guy best suited for the position is finally back. We just played the best defense we will play all year.

Yes our defense is trash and that’s the scary part but as long as our offense plays like it has for the most part we will win games. There will be a change to Smitty if it continues. Hopefully before the end of the season. But this can’t go anywhere but up….can it?
