Bucs Working Run-Pass Option In Red Zone

June 7th, 2018

Not only do the Bucs plan on not choosing to suck this year in the red zone (Todd Monken’s description, not Joe’s), they’re making significant changes on the practice field.

Head coach Dirk Koetter acknowledged after practice today that more red-zone, run-pass option work has arrived in  Tampa and is likely come September.

“I think everybody in the league is probably going to do more of it this year. The success that Philly had; it’s a copycat league,” Koetter said.

Once upon a time, America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, was a rookie who rushed for six touchdowns. So Joe has no doubt that Jameis can handle the “run” part of a run-pass option in the red zone, if he gets creative and doesn’t handoff.

But man, Jameis has so many weapons at his disposal, and his quarterbacks coach recently raved about how the Bucs simply executing basic “pitch-and-catch” would have made them an excellent red zone club. Plus, Koetter won’t allow Jameis to run a basic quarterback sneak, so there’s that.

Regardless, Joe is very glad that Koetter is diving into every option possible.

dirk is a season too late trying to get creative…..but as the old sang goes,…..better late than never!!!!!

not sure if defenses will fear the RPO with Winston but maybe some “wildcat” with jones or djax……bootlegs would work better with Winston as a QB…..

    lets hope the creativity continues!!!!!!

The RPO is widely misunderstood around these parts. The QB isn’t the primary runner in the RPO, the back is. The QB makes a read based on the reaction of the defense to keep the ball in the belly of the RB or to pull it and make the quick throw. The QB run is the third option (but I would prefer a throw away every a QB run). The Bucs could do this without the need to expose Winston. IMO, QB’s are too valuable to expose as dedicated runners but this should’ve been incorporated into the offense long ago.

Serious question, does Winston have the ball handling skills to do this and still reduce his fumbles?

What’s wrong with the “Basic Quarterback Sneak” ? You’ve got a six foot 5″ 245 Lb back going forward behind our new interior line. You can’t get 1 yard ? Then fire them all !

his fumbles mostly came in the pocket not under center…..I understand the RPO perfectly but Winston isn’t going to scare any dlinemen or LB’s…lol….he aint out running any of them…lol….

what makes it work is that the front 7 fear both run options which causes them to hesitate for a split second…..even if a DE and LB bit on the fake, I doubt Winston has the wheels to beat a defender to the corner constantly….

plus, some of winstons TD runs came on broken plays….that’s what he needs to get back to….if it aint there, tuck it and run or throw it away…..don’t try to wait until someone gets open and force a throw…..RUN!!!!!!

I think bootlegs would work for Winston like that play above…..

you want to put fear in defenses with the RPO, have djax and rojo in the backfield at the same time…..defenses wouldn’t know what to do…..both players are threats to take it to the house…..

It’s because Jameis has so many weapons that the run-pass option will work. The threat of Jameis running will free up one of those weapons……let’s do it!!!

    Bucboi,

If the LB bites, it’s a throw not a run. You’re thinking veer option not rpo.

  7. tnew Says:

Well said Duke. The RPO is either a pass or a run by the running back. A triple option is what Bucboi is referring to that has the run, the pass or the QB keep as the options. Two different things. I do advocate an RPO. Not the triple option. Winston has never been a triple option kind of guy.

This just puts way more pressure on the DE’s (or rush LB’s), LB’s and box safeties to play honest football, which slows them down just enough.

This does require a qb that has excellent ball handling. Winston may have it, but we don’t know this.

  8. tnew Says:

Sorry, should read, RPO is either a pass by the QB or a run by the running back, based on one defender’s (usually a LB or box safety) reaction.

Too will be highly effective for Jameis

  10. Duke Says:

    Tnew,

    Excellent points.
I didn’t think triple option mainly because of the lack of a dive and the rpo doesn’t have a QB run. But I think you’re right about the confusion of b.b..

I have to mention along w Ball handling footwork is important.

Why is it the Bucs and Dirk Koetter always come out with what they’re plans are the day after I mention it on JBF? I really they come on here and look for what SOEbuc is saying. Just got a job where I think I’ll be getting about $10/hour. If the Glazers and J.Licht want to bump it up to around $10.50, I’m down.
