Nightmare Of A Defensive Line

December 22nd, 2017

An investigation needs to be launched.

It just keeps getting worse.

Yes, of late Joe has been pointing out how gutless the Bucs defensive line has been (though that’s sort of an unfair charge to lob at Swaggy Baker). Even worse, Team Glazer has poured millions into the defensive line and is getting virtually nothing for its return.

(Pro Bowler Gerald McCoy is not included in this discussion for obvious reasons.)

Joe thinks it is an absolute outrage that Roberts Ayers, Will Gholston and Baker combined are collecting $19 million this season, yet have a grand total of 2.5 sacks between the three of them. How can this be?

Then, Joe was unnerved to find out just how overpaid those three are. Even NFL Media is appalled.

Joe even called for someone to contact Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to report this extortion. Well, Joe learned it is even worse and someone higher up the political food chain than Bondi should be involved.

The good folks at NFL Films, which does the research for BSPN’s NFL Matchup, found that not only are the Bucs pathetic in getting pressure on the quarterback, the defensive line cannot stop the run either.

Only four teams yield more average rushing yards on first down than the Bucs. So not only cannot the Bucs breathe on a quarterback, they can’t stop a cool breeze on first down, allowing nearly five yards on the ground on first downs.

Now Joe understands Team Glazer member Ed Glazer contributed financially to help President Trump become our 45th Commander in Chief. Joe also knows that Bondi is an intimate of President Trump. Bondi has roots in south Tampa. Feel free to do the math here, but Glazer needs to turn in his receipt for a favor so the feds can get involved.

That’s how out of hand dismal this defensive line is. If you can’t rush the quarterback and you can’t stop the run, then what the hell is the point?

I just threw up in my mouth! It doesn’t surprise me though! I’ve seen barstools trip up more people than THIS defensive line!!!

That photo with the article definitely suggests there’s something criminal going on.

Just another reason to hate this family… You want a change for theirs football team, Bucs fans? FIRE THE GLAZERS…

“Only four teams yield more average rushing yards on first down than the Bucs”, and the New England Patriots is one of them. Does that mean that we can throw out Matt Patricia as a possibility to become head coach?

I guess I’m curious as to why GMC isn’t included in the d line picture. To me building a defense around any three technique not named Sapp is a poor strategy. If this was a baseball situation and there was a WAR stat, my logic would be proven out. Kind of like drafting a kicker (even if he ends up being the best in the league for 20 seasons) in the second round. Every position has a value of importance attached to it. Sacks from an edge rusher must be paid for, for example. Positions that produce stats, require the most salary toward them. If you invest heavy on the 3 tech, you better find a value at edge, which is hard because, they get paid. Disruption from an interior lineman, while valuable, can’t warrant the huge contracts. Calais Campbell was paid, for sacks. He plays as much DE as three tech. Not sure why GMC isn’t utilised in a similar manner. DE on run heavy downs, 3 tech on pass heavy downs.

Not saying that you should pile the blame on GMC but his usage and contract is very much a part of this picture.

and people think smitty was an upgrade!!!!….BS….GO BUCS!!!!

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Makes ya wonder how the Pats, Jags & Rams have a combined 31 wins, 11 losses since they’re the worst 3 NFL teams at stopping the run. Oh wait, they’re also the #4, #5 and #1 ranked offenses respectively. Hmmm, maybe there is something to the idea that a strong offense can compensate for defensive deficiencies after all. Nah, fire Smitty and the defensive coaching staff. That’ll fix our problems for next year.

  9. '79Defense Says:

Am I missing something? Interesting that the top three “worst” teams are all having great years.

  10. Mike Johnson Says:

Gut the whole Deeyham Defensive staff from top to bottom including the..Defensive Scouting Dept! Give DC pressbox Smitty a Xmas gift certificate and a warm Boot. If Koetter insist Smitty has to stay? Then send him to University of Alaska with a warm parker along with his road dog. Koetter needs to go. But him and back stabber Licht will team up on ole Smitty and keep their jobs. I still say Koetter is not NFL head coaching material. We shall see…

  11. Me? Says:

The D line isnt afraid of Trump coming after them, with their bloated salaries they’re about to get a yuuuggeeee tax break and suckers like me are gonna continue to watch them suck while Trump helps them get paid even more. It’s truly a Bucs life….

  12. 44is88 Says:

Well the Glazers are smart with politics but just can’t run a football team. At least now I have more respect for them. My 401k and checkbook thank them for their contributions.

  13. The Buc Realist Says:

We have to trade GMC for picks this offseason and start building a “real” D-line!!!!!! Like the old saying goes, The Buc’s can lose without him!!!!!!! As soon as Coach Smitty stated to try a 3 line front , GMC the supposed “captain” complained!!!!!!! The hole he causes when free-lancing and the locked in predictability so he can get “his” stats are not worth it!!!!!!! We can have 2 pretty high first round picks to start fixing the lines!!!!! Do It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, you didn’t know bro???? Mr GMC has the fastest get-off in the NFL…and then flys right past the offensive player make zero plays….but hey atleast he looks good doing it, right??????

I ranks GMCs getoff up there with crying on the field….it’s get for his PR, agent, and ProBowl voting.

  15. Lamarcus Says:

How the hell they get a probowler out the worst dline in NFL history. That’s the obvious question. Again GMC gets “voted” to probowl not earn his way and he gets a pass once again

Dsmith on hard knocks ‘ It’s all about McCoy”.

We are a 34 built defense playing 43 to accommodate either gmc and Sapp complaints. Last in defense are the results. Go figure

  16. Lamarcus Says:

Gmc = quick get off nothing else. No Hussle.

McDonald = slow get off and fights and never gives up.

    McDonald >gmc.

  19. Buddy Says:

Karma is such a B$tch!! Can’t stop laughing cause it’s coming back on Klueless Koetter & Licht!! Koetter for stabbing Lovie in the back to become head coach & Licht for Joe Cullen who was the best d-line coach that’s been here since Marinelli. Licht thought he could bully Cullen and look what happens. Jay Hayes is a complete JOKE!! Last time I checked Ravens have pretty good output under Cullen. LOLOLOLOL

  20. 813bucboi Says:

    @realist

now your excuse is GMC?……LOL….dirk has turned this team into a mess!!!!!….get rid of him and we’ll get better….GO BUCS!!!!

The Bucs need to do whatever they can to get Sequon Barkley. Our running game was abysmal all year! Clearly our weakest link on the team.

  23. not there yet Says:

Gerald McCoy isn’t included for obvious reasons!!! It’s the ignorance of the media to say his skill is rushing the passer and blame everyone else around him for not getting to the quarterback but to make yourself look even worse you exclude the supposedly best player on the defense for not being able to stop the run even though he’s up front and right in the middle of the defense along with swaggy Baker….. It’s mighty pathetic of you. No one gets pro bowls for stopping the run but you do get wins for it. They were worse at stopping the run Monday night without GMC but how much worse is debatable

  24. Dewey Selmon Says:

I don’t think the people hating on the Glazers lived through the Culverhouse era.

  25. Clodhopper Says:

These NFL matchup stats and pics of late get more depressing every time you show them.

Luckily (for me anyways) you balanced this one with a pic of a great man, and an even better leader!!! 😂😂

  26. DoNUTS Says:

I dont think this DL could sack Trump at QB with a 10 second head start!

Yes, thats how bad it is!

Shame on the Bucs for not getting C Campbell. He would have been our Winston on the DEF side.

  27. BUCMAN Says:

WHO PICKED THESE BUMS, THEY ARE THE PROBLEM WITH THE TEAM , WE HAVE PEOPLE THAT GOES OUT AND FINES THESE GOOD FOR NOTHING PLAYERS THAT CAN’T GET MORE SACKS THAN ONE PERSON ON ANOTHER TEAM IS SORRY , FIRE THE PERSON THAT HIRED THEM , WE NEED SOMEONE THAT KNOWS PLAYER THAT CAN AND WILL PROFORM ON THE FIELD NOT AT A BAR OR A PARTY…….

  28. Pickgrin Says:

Licht needs to cut Ayers, Baker and Gholston (all 3 can be cut free without any additional payment if done before March 8th) – Resign McDonald to a cheap 2 year deal, sign a DE and DT from Free Agency and then draft 2 DEs and DT.

On the other side of the ball – Licht needs to cut Sweezy (and eat the $1.8M cap hit), let Pamphile walk (unless he’s willing to sign a 3 year deal commensurate with his crappy contract year play), Resign Evan Smith to a 3 year $10M deal as a solid and versatile back-up/bridge starter (Hawley already under contract in 2018 for $2.6M) Sign the best Center available in Free Agency and move Marpet back to Guard or leave Marpet at Center and sign the best OG free agent available – draft an OT in rd 1 or rd 2 if a worthy player is available and draft a guard in rd 3-5.

Something like this in the 2018 draft

Rd 1 – DE or OT
Rd 2 – OT or DE
    Rd 3 – RB
Rd 4 – OG or DT
Rd 5 – DT or OG
Rd 6 – DE, CB or BPA
Rd 7 – DE, CB or BPA

Those teams have the #6 / #1 / and #5 ranked defenses…. they are elite defenses lol.

Yeah our offense has been a disappointment – primarily in scoring points more so than moving the ball -due to terrible play designs and calls in the red zone; on top of turnovers / missed kicks / etc.

But the defense has sucked hardcore. The D-line is arguably the worst in the league – if not bottom 5 – even with McCOy playing (but Spence out).

The defense basically choked away 3 games this year single-handily. The kicker choked away another game. You can’t say the same of the offense – and to me timing absolutely matters. It’s why certain QBs get clutch labels and others choke labels.

I’d MUCH rather be down 2 points; with 1 minute left in the game; knowing we can score a FG to win; than be up 2 points; with 1 minute left in the game; knowing it’s a lock that our defense will lose that game.

Just think over the years – and the offense has destroyed the defense in terms of executing in those late game situations. It isn’t close whatsoever.

  33. Lord Cornelius Says:

    @Pickgrin

I like that plan and agree on how we should prioritize the resources.

the 2 main things with O-line that dictate what we do are:

1-We still cool with Smith at LT? Would he move to RT?
2-We still cool with Ali at C?

Marpet has graded out well at C according to the spreadsheet nerds – a top 6 C this last year – vs them saying he was a top 13 G the year prior – so according to them his play was just as good at C as RG. The team themselves had Marpet grade out as the best player.

So I am not so sure the move was even a bad thing – I am not sure why that’s been the automatic sentiment by JBF or others. I thought Marpet did fine at C – and it was only his first year. I’d be completely fine with him staying there.

But we should get a new OG regardless to replace either Sweezy or Pamphile – if not both. Maybe a developmental RT to go behind Dotson if we keep Smith at LT.

The O-line is less of a clear picture. But the D-line is obvious.

Cut Baker/Ayers/Gholston/Sweezy/Pamphile. Move GMC if you can get a R2 pick for him. Spend most your FA money from all that on a new DT/new DE; if not 1-2 of each; and at least one premiere O-lineman; if not 2; and a CB if we can’t keep Grimes.

IDeally get Chubb R1. Go disruptive DT R2. Use that GMC R2 pick on a RB or CB. R3-R5 draft an OG and OT and either CB/RB.

  34. Dylan Says:

AND WHo gave them those contracts? Our overated GM

  35. Guzzie Says:

GMC the next great ex-Buc as soon as he goes to another team, a team with a good defensive coach and a talented DE, he’s going to win Defensive player of the year and get 15 sacks and get a Super Bowl ring, then all the GMC haters can shove it! It’s not his fault we haven’t had any talented coaches or DEs it’s on the GM

  36. Rod Munch Says:

When you sign a bunch of 3rd rate players you get 3rd rate results. Ayers was a terrible signing – he’s a guy who did nothing his entire career then just before hitting FA he had a stretch of like 8 games where he put up some good numbers (although when you go through sack by sack, a bunch of them were just touching a QB who was already down).

For Baker, it’s not a good signing but I still have less of a problem with him since he was paid backup money, in 2017, $5-mil a year is backup money, and it’s basically a one year deal. The issue is people thought he’d come in and start right away, and if that was going to be the case someone would have paid a lot more to do that for them. Also for Baker I’ll give it to the Bucs that the people in Washington really whined about losing him, so they thought they were losing something of value.

For Gholston I just didn’t get the deal at all. The guy is a run stopper who can’t rush the passer and he gets $7-million. WOW. He’s not a DT in a 3-4 where you pay big money for a run stopper, no, he’s a DE in a 4-3. He had played fairly well, but for $7-mil they should have let him walk, I just don’t get how that deal made any sense.

The good part for the Bucs is that according to OverTheCap the Bucs can cut all three with no hit to the salary cap. Throw in Doug Martin and the the Bucs can easily slash $28-million from the books and they’ll have $92-million in cap space to work with.

  37. Guzzie Says:

The best GMC would get is a late 3 early 4, he’ll be 30 in February and more likely to get cut before anyone gives up high draft collateral
