Dirk Koetter Raves About Chris Godwin

Joe has already written yesterday and this morning about what a solid job rookie wide receiver Chris Godwin has done the past couple of games.

A week ago Godwin filled in for the suspended Mike Evans and did not embarrass at all. In fact, he got a game ball for his offensive play.

Yesterday, his only two targets he caught were 14- and 24-yard passes in clutch time on the game-winning drive. Perhaps the Bucs don’t win yesterday if not for Godwin?

Speaking postgame yesterday on the Buccaneers Radio Network, winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter seemed pretty darn impressed with Godwin.

“Thing about Chris is, he is such a battler,” Koetter said. “He plays special teams, he is doing a lot of dirty work on offense but when the ball comes his way, he really knows how to compete for the ball. Very pleased with that. Very good plays by him.”

Well, the way Godwin is playing, it is time to get him in the mix offensively more. Ride the hot hand. Look, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht didn’t draft him to suck Gatorade on the sidelines.

A poster here said Koetter should start putting DJAX at the slot sometimes. I thought this was crazy talk but if Goodwin keeps going clutch, DJAX in the slot SOMETIMES could make him far more dangerous AND get him in more positions to show case his explosiveness. Koetter and JW have failed him in this regard. Good to see Goodwin doing well.

lets rave about the bucs beating ATL on sunday….GO BUCS!!!!

  3. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

So maybe he won’t have him sitting on the bench until the last drive of the game next week?

O.J. got 3 catches yesterday, which means he won’t be targeted again until we play the Lions right?

  4. DB55 Says:

It seems obvious to me that Godwin and O.J. are better targets/weapons than Djax and Hump but wtfdik.

O.J. scores 2 TDs on 4 targets then they stopped throwing him the ball. Smdh

And speaking of weapons, does Mike Evans have the lowest yac in the league or am I just trippin? Let me know.

  5. ChanEpic Says:

@DerrickBrooksforGM – Couldn’t agree more but that would require some creativity on the part of our OC/HC and I don’t believe that is his strong suit.
The under utilization of Godwin and OJ Howard as well as the mind games being played on other younger players(Ali Marpet) is what needs correcting.
FREE OJ and GODWIN coach Koetter!!!!

  6. Garv Says:

As well he should. Godwin is a God send.

  7. ChanEpic Says:

DB55 – The lack of Yac from M13 is exactly why they needed a Djax type of talent. M13 either catches it and tiptoes on the sideline, grabs the TD, or gets tackled immediately. I can count on one hand the times he makes a grab breaks tackles and gets more YAC. His game is “jump ball” not “Beast mode”

  8. German Buc Says:

Imagine what could have been if only the coaches use him and the other young guns properly…

  9. Bob in Valrico Says:

This is an area where Adam Humphries has slipped this year. I don’t see the deeper passes to Hump working enough. They seem to bounce off his hands or chest.

  10. Lord Cornelius Says:

Yep no offense to Humphries but he should not be playing over Godwin.

We should be working on 3 WR 1 TE sets with ME / Godwin outside / Djax in slot and Howard as the TE. That’s getting all your best talent on the field and creating the most mismatches by far for a defense. Can still run out of that formation if you want too.

  11. IEric Says:

Coach talk out of both sides of his neck he claims he play the best players but really do he? he seems to play the players he like personally first!!

  12. DB55 Says:

If I were Koetter I’d start calling around Idaho to see if there are any hs coaching jobs available. Seems to me that this whole season has been centered around Djax getting a TD.

  13. DB55 Says:

    Lc

Take out Djax and put in Brate and I’m with you. So 2 WR and 2 TE

  14. Bob in Valrico Says:

Valid point Chan Epic. He got a first down on a wide receiver screen against
agaist New orleans I believe.Difference was Fitz threw the ball properly so he could run with it. Too often Jameis throws balls where his receivers can get
hurt. Still remember the throw that Jameis threw to Evans last year that hung
Evans out to dry and he was hammered and hurt because of it. That ball was badly overthrown and Evans made a great one handed catch and hung on to it.

  15. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

Humphries has never been good. At all. The WR position was just so week that he looked capable by default.

He has cost the Bucs dearly numerous times. Perhaps the biggest turning point of this season was his fumble in Buffalo. I have no doubt the Bucs win that game if he hangs on.

Godwin is a legit NFL starting talent. With him, Evans, Djax, and Howard the Bucs will have an amazing 4 targets going out on every route.

  16. shooter Says:

Trade Evans for a 2nd and a 4th round. LINEMEN

  17. Lord Cornelius Says:

@ DB55 I doubt they would do that but the 2 TE set should be our next most used formation.

Main thing is at this point Godwin should be taking snaps over Humphries.

  18. BucsFan90 Says:

Time to cut Godwin loose. Humphries can take a seat, just another undrafted fa turned chokeartist

  19. The daily corner Says:

In the off season Cut or trade DeSean Jackson and start Godwin in his place.

Not a bad plan…that draft class of wrs has been jinxed this year. Watkins traded and playing average. OBJ with a serious injury…Evans with a negative YAC…

  21. SOEbuc Says:

Bucs were studying Godwin probably the most pre draft and I was loving his highlight reel. When the second round went by I was saddened we didn’t get him cus he was predicted to be a middle second rounder not third and thought there was not a chance we would be able to get him. But we did and now he’s ballin’ when he is put on the field. This pleases me very much so.

  22. orlbucfan Says:

Strongest group of players on this team are the WRs and TEs. Koetter has to adapt to whoever is the QB. Still, all these guys are healthy. DK can allow some imagination to creep into his calls. Start Payton and call something more creative than ########up-the-middle. Go Bucs!!

  23. Its_A_Tough_Buc_Life Says:

The “trade Evans” narrative is a joke. The guy is a stud. His YAC is not good, but he hung a 5/92 with a scrub at QB.

  24. Swanee Says:

Start Godwin, he has earned it. He has the best hands on the team. No reason to wait until 4th quarter to play him.

  25. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

DJax belongs in the slot with Evans and Goodwin on the outside. That needs to be our lineup the majority of the time with a single back set. Drop the 2 TE crap and be explosive like we are on paper. What do we have to lose honestly

  26. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Koetter raving about a player??? Y Y Y A A A W W W N N N !!! Don’t matter OJ put up 92 yards and 2tds and was instantly forgotten. Godwin already showed he can ball but still gets forgotten. The line can’t run block so why not quick strikes to open the field some??? We hve the players for mor cross and seem ptterns. When does koetter let his drop and call a more aggressive game from start to finish?

  27. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

So easy to get on the “Mod Squad” when you tweak a Joe(s) feelings ! 🤣😂🤣

  28. USFBUC Says:

I have asked this before and I am still asking it. If a bunch of fans can see what’s wrong with the Bucs why can’t these coaches figure it out. The under utilization of our young weapons for Winston is insane.

We can run three or four WR or go big with the two TE set and we should be able to run or pass out of both.
