Just how hurt is Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy?

Woody Cummings of The Tampa Tribune reported that at Friday’s practice, GMC participated but could only use his right hand and his left hand was held against his body, as if it were in a sling but was not.

GMC confessed he had a “small procedure” on his left hand that he injured in the first half against Indianapolis. What exactly the injury is, remains unclear. Joe wrote about seeing the swollen hand Sunday and McCoy’s three-inch vertical scar on the back of his hand.

In this Sunday video behind the scenes from Buccaneers.com, GMC is coaching up his teammates on the bench (2:20 mark) and not once does he take his left hand out of his pocket. There is an unrelated scene in the background with GMC still having his left hand in his pocket.

Then, Joe obtained a photo from Chris Fischer, sports anchor for WTSP-TV Channel 10. It showed GMC in a sling Sunday as he came out of the tunnel to the bench.

If your hand is in a sling, then Joe isn’t sure how much better that hand can get in a week.

We will know more today of GMC’s status for Sunday, so stay tuned. But Joe is concerned.

Fischer will anchor the WTSP-TV Channel 10 sportscast at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. tonight, and will have more on GMC’s status.

Can anyone find a shot of Jameis screaming at the crowd from Sunday?

  2. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Put’em on IR- if need be – Bring Up DT/DE Derrick Lott from the practice squad.

  3. Joe Cool Says:

Clearly, he was missed on Sunday.

  4. Elle Says:

Say what you want about GMC, but our chances of sneaking into the playoff would increase with him on the field

  5. D-Rome Says:

Anyone who says different is an idiot and should be laughed at mercilessly.

  6. Joe Cool Says:

Warren Sapp would have put a club on it and not sat out like a softie.

  7. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Anyone who actually watched the game could see we got no pressure without blitzing on Sunday. Losing McCoy and Jack may not have hurt against Atlanta, but I can guarantee you it won’t be good against Brees. One thing that would be nice is if we could blitz more with those guys in the lineup. If anything, it will get McCoy some 1 on 1 match ups.

  8. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Joe Cool,

You do realize Sapp missed a game with a hand injury before right? Do you know what the injury to McCoy is? Are you a doctor?

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

As a joke they should wheel out GMC in a full body cast on a gurney and then say he is “probable” to play Sunday!!!!!!

  10. MadMax Says:

Focus on healing Gerald! Hopefully you’ll be back next year and with a vengeance!

  11. Clintro Says:

People and the soft talk….about these player, just don’t know what they play through.

  12. MadMax Says:

Look, I have faith in our D line against the aints O line and Brees. I believe the young Men are reaching down deep to prove something to themselves in McCoy’s absence…..playing with heart and sheer will is what its about…..that is what wins the close games!!

Don’t be so sure he won’t. The game right after the procedure is understandable.

And also, don’t forget that he has been putting the procedure off for 2 FREAKING YEARS, HATER!!!!!!!

Good God, the man has been playing with an injured hand for two seasons. Amazing how people forget that.

  14. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

We are facing our easiest opponents of the year…he really did pick the right time to get it done. After putting it off two years, it must have become worse than people realized. It would also explain his slowed production.

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

And yes, I know the explanation say it happened in the game…but it is the same hand that has been injured, so it probably made it worse.

  16. Tampa Tony Says:

This dude just can’t stay healthy

Def need to get more talent on defense as you can’t rely on gmc

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    MadMax

Well said – and I agree

  18. 813bucboi Says:

i agree that we are better with gmc on the field but we do have some players that are capable of stepping up just like last game…William ghloston had two huge sacks and shut down the run along with akeem spence, melton and mcdaniel who also helped shut down the run…howard jones had some plays as well coming off the edge…i think the falcons oline is better than the saints oline…i think we can win without gmc this week if need be but it would be great to have him on the field…GO BUCS!!!

  19. MadMax Says:

    Sup Luv! Thank you Brother.

  20. StPeteBucsFan Says:

BucBonzai…I hope you’re correct but Brees is always dangerous. The basically had Carolina whipped and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory…boy have we ever seen that before?

I’m hoping they spent all their emotion trying to knock off an undefeated team.
Now they have nothing left to play for while the Bucs still have an outside shot at getting in.

BTW we are one game behind Seattle and two behind a fading Minnesota team.
How do we look tie breaker wise if we end up tied with one of them?

813Bucboi Great point about Gholston. He really seems to be coming into his own and we might discover we have yet another super stud on our DL. That could make the draft interesting.

I still want Aguayo if he comes out this year!

  21. Hawaiian Buc Says:

He’s been healthy enough to make 3 pro bowls.

  22. Defense Rules Says:

@Tampa Tony: ” … as you can’t rely on gmc”.

Please tell me you’re not serious. GMC started 16 games in 2012, 16 games in 2013, 13 games in 2014 and 11 games so far this year. Consistently draws double and triple teams. Total of 30 sacks in those 4 years, second in the NFL among all DTs. Made Pro Bowl in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Does that REALLY sound like someone that Bucs can’t rely on?

  23. D-Rome Says:

According to Rick Stroud, Gerald McCoy returned to practice today.

  24. pelbuc Says:

He’s ok but just not reliable. The offense will have to carry the team the next 4 games.

  25. Joe Says:

As a joke they should wheel out GMC in a full body cast on a gurney and then say he is “probable” to play Sunday!!!!!!

    That’s beautiful!

  26. Joe Cool Says:

@Hawaiian yes I am a doctor. An optometrist, in fact. And you need some glasses because we *did* get to Ryan while rushing 4. Point I am trying to make, is, McCoy did not play and he was not missed. Sure, he adds depth. But we got the job done without him against one of the most explosive offenses in the league.

I am with you. Doctor, do you know why Big Bubba is always hurts?

  28. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @joe Cool,

Are you his doctor? Do you know what injury he had? You make a statement saying Sapp would have played, even though reality is Sapp did have a hand injury in his day and he did miss a game. How do you know it’s only to his hand? How do you know there wasn’t a complication with the procedure? How do you know the team would allow him to play? Point is, you don’t know jack, but you are steady running your mouth like you have inside info.

I was at the game, and I’ve re-watched the game twice. Nope, no pressure. We had 2 coverage sacks and one sack off a blitz. Other than that, there was very little pressure. To say he wasn’t missed is as ignorant as your statement about how Sapp would have played.

  29. godzilla13 Says:

This is the most important stretch run the Buccaneers have had since 2007. We have a shot to make the playoffs for the first time in what eight years? Each of these last four games are playoff caliber games, all must wins. We need GMC and we need him bad. I just hope he can pull it together and help bring this team to the promised land.
