It’s All About That Brain

April 1st, 2015
Brain

The Bucs had a test for Jameis Winston yesterday, per FOX Sports.

Will the next Buccaneers quarterback be a super genius?

We already know what Steve Mariucci thinks.

But the legend of Jameis Winston’s brain is growing. In the FOX Sports video below, former University of Colorado quarterback Joel Klatt, relays what he learned from the Buccaneers about Winston in Tallhassee yesterday.

It seems Winston aced an impromptu Xs and Os recall test the Bucs gave him, which left new offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and friends pleasantly stunned.

Question #1. Can you get the ball to Savage Mike?

Question #2. Can you get the ball to VJax?

  2. robert 9 Says:

    tic tac toe?

  3. bucs4lyfe Says:

jaws was really critical of JW before his pro day but listen to NFL Insiders podcast and you’ll hear about them talking about how he changed his baseball type throw and how good he well he did in the redzone. biggest thing I liked was his leadership with his receivers

  4. twizzylax Says:

@Ray, I like that “Savage Mike”. And the answers to both is yes.

  5. Luther Says:

I can appreciate a guy that remembers his interceptions and can recall plays and diagrams. These kinds of things really separate good guys from great guys because it all leads to advanced understanding.

  6. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

There’s probably a PhredPhinsPhan website for those of you jumping ship, due to Winston being our QB, to go pledge your allegiance too. Unless you are a masochist….

  7. justgetaqb Says:

robert 9, I understand not wanting to draft Winston due to off the field concerns, the fact that FSU hasn’t had a great pro QB track record, or a multitude of other reasons….but every time you post on this site, your (not so) thinly veiled racism is a bit concerning and not indicative of real Bucs fans.

I’m assuming you’re a middle aged white Republican who watches a lot of CBS primetime television shows, which is fine, but I’m having trouble visiting this site multiple times a day and seeing your crap on it.

I just hope people know that you are in the minority of Bucs fans and don’t speak for all of us.

  8. tortured orlando bucs fan Says:

While he seems like a very intelligent guy with a highfootball iq (i believe he earned a ba in 2,3 years? I could be wrong, buddy also told me it was in pre med, very impressive, if true) its very offputting that he doesnt speak coherently like an educated person, instead he speaks like an uneducated thug (no! This has absolutely nothing to do with race! Suh, rg3, ej manual are just 3 of many many many examples of well spoken prominent nfl plays, aaron hernandez is another example of someone who speaks like an uneducated thug) which is a bit offputting.

While it seems he may be very intelligent, and i hope that we take him 1st overall (otherwise ill be pissed) id be nice if he didnt tawww liiii dissss (talk like this) as an nfl qb who wants to be perceived as intelligent….If hes a great qb for us i could care less how poorly he enunciates…

But in person (regardless of race! Ive met people of all races who speak like dumb thugs) if i meet anyone whuu taww liii diii suuuu….i presume that they are a moron(not always the case, but usually)

  9. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @justgetaqb

RE:robert….you were largely correct. I’d probably differ in one small area.

I’m assuming you’re a middle aged white Republican who watches a lot of CBS primetime television shows, which is fine, but I’m having trouble visiting this site multiple times a day and seeing your crap on it.

He’s too busy watch Sean and BillO on Faux News to catch any CBS.

  10. rhenry Says:

I don’t buy into any one player being a franchise savior, but this kid is going to be special. He will elevate the entire buccaneer organization. Finally feeling some excitement from this franchise and its been a long time coming. Bring on the draft, Bring on some football baby.

  11. Skyline Crew Says:

This reminds me of the kids in school who were really book smart and knew tons of crap. However, come time to take a test they sucked. Or come time for common sense and they were dumb. Sure he is great on a white board, but he has trouble reading underneath coverage in a game.

  12. Nick Says:

    @justgetaqb

I’m with you on robert9, except for one thing..

NO POLITICS HERE!!!!!! Please let this be the one bastion where we don’t have to debate right vs. left. X’s and O’s, W’s and L’s only, please.

  13. panhandle buc Says:

But I guess all the keyboard GM’s here know better……..

Todd McShay: Jameis Winston would receive second-highest QB grade he has given in last decade (behind Andrew Luck)

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Winston won my wife over while watching Game Changers……when Mariuchi aske….What was that (tantrum)…..Jameis said….it was a “hissy fit”……game set, match for her…and she was a serious skeptic.

  15. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

Robert9 is still here? I thought he went to Miami.

Or the smart ones pass the test and went to the next level. You can look at it as all the book smart failed or you can look at it SOME of the book smart failed, yet others passed and continued on with the next test.

  17. Jacko101 Says:

I watched Game Changers yesterday and I hate to Say but I’d be ok with Winston 🙁 I still like Marcus too so whichever.

  18. Couch Fan Says:

Every day more and more of the anti-Winstonites are realizing that Jameis will be the pick. Only fear I have is somebody offering us a boatload of pics for him and Lovie/Licht giving in. Dont do it! Stick to the plan, dont give in to temptation, get us our first franchise QB!

    Welcome to Tampa, Jameis!

  19. charactermatters Says:

So let me get this straight, in order to be a racist you must be a middle aged, white, Fox News watching republican?

The kid was admitted to Stanford and had a 4.0GPA in High School. John Lynch went to Stanford. They don’t let morons into Stanford.

  22. justgetaqb Says:

Agreed-I really didn’t intend to make a political statement or make an assumption that all republicans are racist or anything, because they obviously arent.

I was just trying to draw a conclusion that robert9 is part of the lowest common denominator and his crap doesnt belong on a site dedicated for fans of the best (well…technically worst right now…) football team in the league.

love the site, keep up the good work, and if you have a problem with the way Jameis talks, or think hes a “thug”, then bring it up at the next Klan meeting and leave this site to the real fans.

  23. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I agree with keeping politics off these boards. Both parties suck, and I try to avoid all the liars, er, politicians.

  24. robert 9 Says:

so now this site should only be allowed for happy camper buccaneer fans. kind of what it sounds like.

I’m in front of a computer all day, don’t do FB, spend time on other blogs or commenting elswhere. I use this site as an outlet away from business.

but because I complain I am now a racist, buc hater that should not come on here?

hmm. yall get a life, get some thick skin, stop taking $hit so seriously and get your panties out of a wad. sheez. smh

  25. Espo Says:

I thought “tic tac toe” was funny, and not sure how you gathered it to be racist. People like you do tightly wound and overly sensitive need to just relax. This is a game.

  26. Espo Says:

    *so

  27. Skyline Crew Says:

Agreed, no more middle aged white racist Liberals allowed here. Ban em’ all Joe.

  28. TheDon Says:

I wonder if Jameis will change his number. I know he wanted 8 when he first got to FSU but it was taken. So he may stick with 5 here with the bucs

  29. Skyline Crew Says:

“_____showed a nice touch on long throws. He completed 54 percent of his passes thrown at least 15 yards downfield, the highest percentage among Power 5 quarterbacks and 16 percentage points better than the Power 5 average.”

  30. robert 9 Says:

guess I’ll just listen to some more David Allen Coe while the heat cools off.

  31. Skyline Crew Says:

    @TheDon

He wants #1 because he is the best ever. Hell, he may go with 0 because he is so good he comes before #1.

  32. justgetaqb Says:

It’s not just the tic tac toe comment, which is kinda funny, but every other post on this site robert9 makes some stupid comment.

And it doesnt have to be all rainbows and butterflies man, you can b!tch all you want…i love reading those comments the most!

And I’m not saying you’re a racist, I’m sure you’re a good dude who means well and I have no ill will towards you at all, but your comments are ignorant bordering on racist.

And I was guilty of it too at first, which i think is why it bothers me so much now. I thought i knew this kid from what i heard in the media, and how he talked and drew my own conclusions, which were ignorant and wrong.

Now having done some homework on him, he is a charismatic, smart, outgoing and confident kid (keyword is KID) who seems to be taking this all in stride and will hopefully prove people like you wrong.

  33. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

It’s not just one comment that makes me think that about Robert 9, it’s many. Here’s just one example when Keyshawn came out in support of Winston:

    “Robert 9 Says:
    February 6th, 2015 at 5:14 pm

I see a common theme among those who are for winston and those who are against him.

i’ll let you guys guess that one”

So, what he is saying is black people support Winston because he’s black. Not because they can think and analyze on their own and come to their own logical conclusions. It’s because they are the same color of skin. That’s just one example. I have seen others from the same guy.

  34. ATrain Says:

One question for all of the Winston Followers… If this savor of the Bucs comes here and we go 3-13 or 4-12 will you still be behind him. Will you call for Lovies head..

Also don’t make stupid excuses if he fails be a man and say well I called that one wrong..

  35. BK Says:

    Dear forum moderators….

Stop your whining… you sound like a bunch of babies…if you dont like what your reading tell your eyes to move onto the next post.

I have never seen more protectionism over one player-like JW. Its getting a bit ridiculous…he (JW) doesnt need you to tell us whether our view is right wrong or stupid. Its like you are trying to control our thoughts or what we write….get over yourselves…its one player and a game. You are not the thought police and if you think you can control the internet; good luck but I do have some land to sell you 😉

Robert9- continue with your crazy posts…its your right…if I dont want to read it…I will tell my eyes to move further down the screen.

  36. Skyline Crew Says:

If he only gets 4 wins in one season than he is worse than Glennon. Jaboo will have to get at least 6-7 wins his first season.

  37. Skyline Crew Says:

BK, you stop that nonsense right now. You will like Jaboo and you will buy his jersey and his posters. Post them in your room and watch him every day and night. You will set your Google to alert you when his name is mentioned. While you are making love you will think of Winston and stare at his poster. He is our savior. Silly BK…Jaboo is for real Bucs fans not you wannabes.

yez man ill still be a bucs fan no matter what. I have it tattood so ill be a buc fan till the day I die how many of you will tattoo something of the bucs huh?

  41. Couch Fan Says:

It’s entertaining to see how angry Skyline is getting that his mancrush is getting no attention LMAO

  42. Couch Fan Says:

Here Skyline I’ll throw you a bone to make you feel a little better. Mariota is the 2nd best QB in the draft and its not even close. And he’ll have a good career in NY.

    Welcome to Tampa, Jameis!

  43. Skyline Crew Says:

LOL Couch, you’re precious. I don’t know how making fun of you and your ilk is being angry, but good on ya kid. I doubt Mariota goes to NY, but you never know.

  44. Skyline Crew Says:

Of topic as these threads get…how pissed are you if you are Chicago? The top 2 QBs are not going to be at the draft. LMAO. They paid for that and they don’t even get the best players to come. Don’t blame Jaboo and Marcus though. Chicago sux.

  45. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I welcome being made fun of.

Tampa taking Winston takes the sting of everything.

I will note that, if Tampa took Mariota, I wouldn’t make fun of anyone at all. That’s not my style. But, hey, whatever makes you feel better.

  46. Couch Fan Says:

Lol its cute you think you are making fun of me even though I’ve never said Jameis is a savior or going to make us winners all by himself. I never even said he’s the greatest ever. I am excited though that he will be a Buc. I’m sure you’d be just as excited if Mariota was clearly going to be the pick. Ahh, good days are coming! Can’t wait!

  47. Skyline Crew Says:

    Off*

  48. Skyline Crew Says:

If they take Jaboo, I wouldn’t make fun of anybody either because that wouldn’t make sense. I’m making fun of the ragers who can’t take anything negative about Jaboo or anything positive at Mariota. Those guys are the target.

  49. Couch Fan Says:

Lol I personally wouldn’t be pissed about Chicago. But then again I would not go all the way to Chicago just to see 1 or 2 guys. If i were going to make that trip it would be to embrace the entirety of the draft.

  50. Eric Says:

Jameis would also be good at scissors, rock, paper.

    Always enjoyed that one myself.

People put a lot on Jameis. Remember the kid has only played two seasons in college. I expect him to be a bit raw, and probably will throw a lot of picks.

But I also believe he will make a lot of spectacular throws and big plays. And, like Manning and others, will learn over time.

Nobody can doubt he is immensely talented.

Is he a finished product? No.

  51. Skyline Crew Says:

Actually, no I would be as excited. It is a QB. They haven’t done anything in the NFL, yet. They would have to prove themselves just like all the others have to. I would be happy that we took Mariota because it would make us instantly better, but I wouldn’t become an extremist like some of these Jaboo cats.

  52. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    “Skyline Crew Says:

    If they take Jaboo,”

    If. That’s adorable.

  53. Skyline Crew Says:

Until L&L say “We are taking Winston with the #1 pick” it will be an IF.

  54. 87LikesFreeJerseys Says:

Good for you Skyline keep hanging onto that thread until it snaps.

  55. Skyline Crew Says:

I don’t need to hang on to it. I don’t trust L&L. Simple as that.

  56. Skyline Crew Says:

“showed a nice touch on long throws. He completed 54 percent of his passes thrown at least 15 yards downfield, the highest percentage among Power 5 quarterbacks and 16 percentage points better than the Power 5 average.”

  57. Jackt Says:

Winston is the Q pick. Now, we have to rely on Koetter to protect our rookie QB who will struggle when flushed from the pocket.
