Disbelieving Jameis Love

Greg Bedard of theMMQB.com is dubious of Lovie Smith's embracing of Jameis WInston.

Greg Bedard of theMMQB.com is dubious of Lovie Smith’s embracing of Jameis WInston.

So the Bucs are taking Jameis Winston? One prominent NFL scribe believes Bucs coach Lovie Smith confirmed the opposite.

Wednesday, when Lovie took to BSPN radio and said he was “comfortable” coaching Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, many quickly concluded Winston is the leader in the clubhouse to get drafted by the Bucs at No. 1.

Whoa, Nelly, says Greg Bedard of theMMQB.com. Bedard, to be polite, doesn’t swallow anything Lovie says publicly and believes by Lovie verbally embracing Winston means Lovie is picking Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Excuse me if I’m not buying it.

Look, I think Smith is one of the most respectable people in the NFL. He’s a man of great character and terrific leader of men. But he’s also one of the worst serial offenders when it comes to the liars’ season that is the NFL offseason. When I covered the NFC North, it used to be comical to listen to Smith heap great praise on his offense and/or quarterbacks such as Rex Grossman, Brian Griese, Kyle Orton and, of course, Jay Cutler. Smith also loved all his offensive coordinators, right before he tossed them out with the trash. I’m not calling Smith deceitful. He’s just that nice of a guy. He’d rather say something positive (yet false) rather than degrade someone publicly.

Bedard, who knows Lovie from the NFC North — Bedard covered the Packers; Lovie coached the Bears — goes on to document various statements from Lovie that were not backed up by actions.

Does Joe want the Bucs to draft Winston? Well, if you don’t know the answer, it tells Joe you haven’t visited this wonderful corner of the Interwebs since Thanksgiving.

Joe isn’t so sold on Winston going to the Bucs and that’s not because of what Bedard wrote. But like Bedard, Joe values Lovie’s actions more than his words. Lovie’s a great guy, a wonderful guy, but saying and doing are two different things.

Joe is starting to get the hunch Lovie may draft a defensive end with the No. 1 overall pick. Let’s just say Joe isn’t laying any cash Lovie will draft a quarterback. He should! For God’s sake he should! But that is another story.

Leonard Williams or trading down for draft picks. Still believing this is Glennon’s season to take the QB reigns. What he does with the opportunity will probably determine if he reaches a Flacco-esque potential ceiling or a Schaub-esque career backup role

  2. WS99 Says:

    Joe

You’re making me re-think my stance. My heart says Winston but my beautiful mind says Williams or Gregory with Petty getting the nod in a later round.

  3. Scott Says:

8/10 Mock Drafters have us taking Winston at no 1 . That has no effect on the pick but that goes to show how professionals are viewing this situation. The talent is too good to pass up. I see us drafting Winston for sure

  4. Scott Says:

I would be happy with Williams too. Hes a FL native from Mainland High. Just please no Mariota!!

  5. Greg Schiano Says:

Blah….blah…blah…Lovie is at the mike! Joe knows Lovie!! I am in total agreement with Joe that Lovie has not intention of jeopardizing his last season as a HC with the Bucs on the Rapist Winston cuz when he goes 3-13 in 2015, is out the door pal.

I believe Joe that he makes a different pick and Mariota may be a good answer but regardless, I believe that Lovie is trying to elevate the value of the Rapist by stating he is all good with his issues so he can trade down, draft Mariota or maybe Bryce Petty and snag more picks.

Ain’t no way Lovies takes the huge gamble that Jameis (Jadeveon Clowney) Winston is as the #1 pick in the 2015 draft. See…Lovie has no courage. He displayed that by throwing the last game after half time. A good NFL Coach would have refused to lose a game that could be won and feel very confident in his talents to win with whatever pick destiny provides…#1….#2…#3. Not Lovie…..He had to surrender that last victory only to put himself in a position where he can only fail. No matter what player Lovie drafts, pick #1 or pic #6….he will not have the ability to coach a winner which will lead to his firing.

Joe knows the writing is on the wall!

    Greg Schiano

  6. Phil Says:

If Lovie doesn’t draft Jameis number one he will not be here in 2016 which also makes it OK because Lovie is a moron. But the perfect scenario would we draft Jameis number one and Lovie is still gone at the end of 2015. That would be great.

  7. Bucs#1 Says:

No coach or GM is going to say anything bad or negative about any player while at the combine. You can’t take anything that anybody says there as gospel

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Trading down is more of a possibility than picking a DE & #1……but,

This could explain why Bucs interviewed Holliday from Washington yesterday…

Why interview a late round spread option QB unless you are planning to either draft 2 spread option QBs,…….or one in a late round….I guess to compete with Glennon and be the backup….but even that doen’t make a lot of sense.

  9. ben Says:

    bucs ..draft anybody BUT Winston..

  10. Skyline Crew Says:

    Draft Mariota. There easy decision.

  11. Scott Says:

@Tampabaybucfan they are simply checking all options. If they drafted Mariota they will have to get another spread QB. Of course they will interview him

  12. Skyline Crew Says:

Now on to more troubling news. USAToday posted an article how Winston could be coming in to the league with 1 strike against him already.

“Jameis Winston could be a No. 1 draft pick like no other, but not in the way he might hope.

His resume of misbehavior at Florida State, including an alleged sexual assault that was virtually ignored for a year, is going to collide head-on with the NFL’s tough new personal conduct policy.

Based on that policy, which takes a serious look at behavior outside of the league, Winston already qualifies as a violator, so he arrives at the league’s doorstep with one strike against him. That means any misstep he makes as an NFL player could be seen by the league as a second offense, potentially drawing a punishment more severe than an initial six-game suspension.”

“So, while Winston is having his 15-minute meetings with various teams at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis through Saturday, he should make sure he meets with one other person in the very near future: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

This shouldn’t be a social visit. It should be deadly serious, reflecting the gravity of his situation. One wonders if Winston understands just how precarious his position in the NFL will be. After the embarrassment of his time at Florida State, where the adults in his life failed him again and again, is it even possible for Winston to process how quickly he could jeopardize, or even end, his professional career?”

It goes on and on about the stuff he has done, but we all know what he has done. However, I think it would be wise of him to address the issue with Goodell or at least the players union to see what he is coming in to.

  13. QB4BUCS Says:

The Glazer will not allow Lovie and Licht to draft anyone other than a QB with #1. They know what sells tickets and it is not a defensive end.

  14. LUVMYBUCS Says:

If we Philly is willing to give us

A young talented QB, LT, TE

    Nick Foles QB 26 6-6 243
    • NFL Draft: 2012 / Round: 3 / Pick: 88

    Lane Johnson OT 24 6-6 317
    • NFL Draft: 2013 / Round: 1 / Pick: 4

    Zach Ertz TE 24 6-5 250
    • NFL Draft: 2013 / Round: 2 / Pick: 35

    + a sh*t load of picks-u wouldn’t do this trade?

  15. Pickgrin Says:

As Scott said – Winston’s talent is too good to pass on when you are as desperate for a QB as this team is. It has been reported many times that the Glazers want a franchise QB. (What NFL owner doesn’t). They always have and it has never worked out. Supposedly Gruden’s firing was partially because he did not try to draft and develop a young QB. So that is going to play a huge role in the outcome of our #1 pick.

The Bucs have never been in this position of having the #1 pick with 2 very good QB prospects to choose from. The timing will never be better for the Bucs to try drafting a top notch talent QB prospect. And on top of that – the owners and coaches and everyone knows that if they don’t pick one of these 2 QBs – then the fan base is going to go ballistic. Then anger will quickly switch to apathy and unless Lovie gets them winning a bunch of games early next year – they will be looking at a 1/2 empty Raymond James stadium for most games next year and lose tens of million$ in the process.

  16. The Real Malloy Says:

no no NO!!!! We need to draft a QB. None of this trading down BS and taking a DT. Its the #1 overall pick dammit!

Im hoping for Mariota, but geez, Id rather us draft Winston than trade down or draft a DT. We need a face of the franchise. We need butts in the seats!

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

That would give us a QB

-TWO YOUNG talented TALL….FAST Tight Ends

    -A YOUNG-ATHLETIC-PRODUCTIVE-Left Tackle

    -A YOUNG-PRO BOWL -Quarterback

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I’m not trying to fit a square peg in a round hole-Mariota was built for Chip’s system.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

IMHO…..The only way Lovie doesn’t draft a QB @#1 is if there is a huge trade package offered.

I find it amusing that the same persons who constanly trash Lovie & think he should be fired want think he has the autonomy to make this pick.

2-14 put him on a short leash with the Glazers….they will be crawling up his A$$ with this pick

  20. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @Greg Schiano

the writing was on the wall for you the moment you finished your opening press conference and went through training camp, we could all see how sorry of a coach you were after the first game of your nfl career lol you had referees coming on tv dogging you lol you yell at referees like your in college hahaha pathetic but im glad you’ve put your prediction out there so any praise that comes from you if we have a winning season automatically makes you a bandwagon fan. you’ve complained since day 1 of the lovie era and pick mariotta over Winston wont silence you because your a hater

  21. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

If we did get a boat load of picks, you could literally draft another receiver to replace Vincent Jackson one day.

Can you imagine -Mike Evans & w/ Breshad Perriman, Dorial Green-Beckham or Devin Smith

  22. bucs4lyfe Says:

im thinking that take is spot on…..It scares me because it’s the media who keep talking to lovie strictly about Winston, its the media linking Winston to tampa so honestly your making it easy for lovie…..what he is doing is the same lies he’s told all year long

Greg Bedard of theMMQB.com lol most of these people don’t believe what your saying because they still believe glennon is the quarterback of the future hahahaha

  23. IdahoBucsfan Says:

Listen,.. you can’t have it both ways,.. either you are a man of great character, or you are a LIAR, and I have had a full year to recognize LIAR coaching our team. Spin it any way ya want,. Lovie the Liar!

  24. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

God I love how desperate the Mariota people are…reading into an interview with a 7th round propspect bc he’s a spread option QB, WHILE IGNORING THAT THE BUCS ALSO INTERVIEWED CLASSIC DROPBACK PASSER BLAKE SIMS

    It’s getting pretty pathetic

  25. biggun Says:

Glennon is the starter this season period, this is the only logical move to make, Glennon got the right qb coach has the right OC and now he can really show his talent.. same as kyle bush having to run the Daytona 500 in a regular street car w/o the right tools NOBODY can get the job done…

  26. BirdDoggers Says:

If the pick isn’t a QB, they have to trade down. If the coaches believe Glennon is the answer or a QB later in the draft, that’s fine. They’re the ones paid to make those decisions. But, they can’t pass up a chance to stockpile premium picks by trading down. The more picks the better. Play the averages.

  27. Robert 9 Says:

    biggun gets it.

problem is I don’t think there will be that many great trade partners who want to gamble on winston.

we might be stuck with the 1st pick. in that case. roll with mariota and trade MG for another pick. get a backup QB in FA.

  28. bucs4lyfe Says:

unbelievable people are still saying IF glennon is the guy? you lose all credibility still talking about glennon. damn how pathetic I wouldn’t even all you a part of the MGM that’s how sad it is. IF the coaches believe? its already been proven fact glennon is not the answer so if you really think the bucs will use the first overall pick on a defensive end after what clowney did last year come on people seriously. all the talk around the league and everywhere was always about drafting a quarterback. NO COACH IN THE LEAGUE HAS FINAL SAY REGARDLESS OF CONTRACT. THE MAN PAYING YOUR SALARY ALWAYS HAS FINAL SAY, if glennon is the answer for half a season or one season then he is not the answer for those that keep saying IF

    @Skyline

Joe and everyone else in the media completely ripped this lady a new one about how much bs that article was. It is completely false and the lady who wrote it is one of the least respected people inside of media circles. She is an idiot, and you believed her… Cool. Going to start posting articles from the onion too? Because that’s about as factual as this bullcrap.

BTW, did you not read Joes article “Jameis Watch: Shameful Hate!” from today? What you are posting is about that article.

  30. Matt Says:

JOEs your ads are absolutely unbearable sometimes. I can’t read an article on my mobile wout being routed to an app download or another website…

  31. Matt Says:

Also, I can’t imagine the glazers passing on a QB. But there’s no reason for me to trust the glazers or lovie, and I don’t have a read of Licht at all.

  32. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ bucs4lyfe

Dude unless you work inside One Buc Place or have insider info your opinion on what you think the Bucs plan for Glennon will be is as useless as mine or anyone else’s. You call others stupid, but who looked stupid last year while definitely predicting the Bucs would draft a QB or that Glennon would be traded/MCCown retained? Best to offer your opinion and move on without bashing anyone else since it’s pretty obvious you have no more of a clue of the Bucs intentions than the rest of us. Sit back, relax, see how it all plays out

I stopped reading Jameis Watch articles because they were BS anyways. There is nothing in them that provides anything and the Homers in there are idiots. I stick to the articles outside of Jameis Watch. Essentially, I’m boycotting Jameis Watch.

Please post links for who is ripping her besides Joe’s opinion. Also, please tell me where she is wrong in that he could come in to the NFL with one strike.

  35. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @ToesOnTheLine!

what in the world are you talking about!!!
You have to be schiano lol your the only that cant read the writing on the wall. right so the bucs put glennon on the trade block because he’s the quarterback of the future. if the bucs are scared to take a chance on a quarterback then they wont but that would be the only reason not too, even MGM thinks we should draft one and let glennon start the year. he doesn’t have to be traded before the draft, there is a trade deadline and anyone like sam Bradford could get injured and need for a qb increases for teams with good defenses and bad quarterbacks. don’t be so sensitive if I think your take is stupid…im sure plenty of people think it towards me on some of these posts but have the dignity to keep it to themselves lol not me I let it fly. but saying a take on a specific topic is stupid isn’t me calling a particular person stupid all I know of you is your handle ToesOnTheLine! greg schiano I don’t know a thing about you don’t be so sensitive

  36. salish_seamonster Says:

I’m glad Lovie throws up smokescreens. That’s his job.

  37. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Nah I’m not Greg Schiano (the poster here or the real guy), nor am I overly sensitive about a free internet blog ramblings. I just find it silly for you or to sh!t on other people’s opinions as if you have any hard facts behind your opinion either. Bottom line is we don’t know what the team will do, and all options probably really are being considered by Lovie/Licht/Glazers. The fact is though that the team passed on drafting a QB last year and Glennon is still on the team despite what a lot of know it alls said wouldn’t happen. Like I said lets see how everything plays out over the next few months

  38. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

And as for Glennon being on the trade block, I’m sure every GM will listen to offers on just about any player on their roster. The only official thing I’ve read was that they received several offers for Glennon last year, a far cry from actively shopping him.

  39. bucs4lyfe Says:

HAHAHAHA OK well lol your right, that goes to show you what I know because I always thought listening to offers from other players for your player is actively shopping him if the bucs initiated it……..were there not teams trying to get glennon since bucs got here? my personal opinion is his only value has to do with a trade. Only difference in our opinions here and Joes opinion posted here is it’s on joe’s website but everybody talks about what they think or feel. just like you just did. only reason I think glennon is still here is because they haven’t gotten what they feel he’s worth, same thing green bay did with matt Flynn and patriots did with Ryan mallot except those are better players

  40. bucs4lyfe Says:

Josh McCown signed a 2 year / $10,000,000 contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including $4,750,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $5,000,000. if we had gotten a worthy offer for glennon in the open market he would be gone not mccown, 5 mil is not that far off from the average cost of an nfl veteran back up quarterback so don’t let media tell you that he has a crazy expensive contract because he didn’t

  41. Skyline Crew Says:

hahaha…NFL released some of Brady’s combine workouts. Dude he looks bad. Skinny as hell and ran a 5.28 40 yd dash. No wonder he dropped.

  42. gt40bear Says:

As I’ve said many times lately, I will never believe another thing that comes out of Lovie’s mouth. Seems like an honorable guy, was in favor of his hiring and all that but he has spewed so much BS in the last year that I can no longer allow myself to believe any of it! Don’t talk, just win Lovie!

  43. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

I agree that Lovie seemed like he was being nice and politically correct when talking about Winston and passionate and excited (in the Lovie way) when talking about Mariota…. Don’t worry, gentlemen, we will be picking a QB with our #1. And it will be Super Mariota.

  44. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Had the Bucs initiated sure, supposedly GM’s reached out to Licht to inquire about Glennon…again big difference from shopping a guy (like the Bucs supposedly were doing with other players like VJax awhile back). Not sure how you can look at game stats over the course of Glennon, Flynn, and Mallet and somehow come up with Flynn and Mallet are better QB’s, but whatever floats your boat I guess. What’s that saying the Winston Mob is using haters gonna hate?

  45. Brandon Says:

Lovie said positive things about Mariota too, does that mean we also aren’t picking him? I understand Bedard’s rationale, but if every time Lovie said something nice about a guy guaranteed he wouldn’t draft him, I’m not sure there would be many decent prospects for us to draft.

  46. BoJim Says:

Glennon is good and Keotter will coach him up and Winston will sit on the sidelines till he can take the job away from the Cannon!!.

  47. Vico Says:

Trade down snd draft petty. Serious.
