Jameis Watch: Tape Says It All

February 12th, 2015

jameis 0212Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

With the unleashing of turnover-prone Josh McCown yesterday, even those who thought the Bucs were inclined to select Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota had to reassess their findings.

The Bucs don’t have a starting quarterback now. Oh, Lovie Smith nine months ago proclaimed and bragged how Mike Glennon was the quarterback of the future, but when McCown was shatting all over the field at the Den of Depression — maybe that is why Aaron Rodgers had his leg problems? — and the Bucs were in a hopeless nosedive, circling the drain in a bullrush to the first pick in the draft, Lovie never went to his bullpen and got Glennon valuable experience. (He did, however, bench several starters in the final game, though not McCown).

Sometimes, actions speak louder than words.

As a result, Joe is having a hard time finding any thoughtful NFL type to suggest the Bucs, on Feb. 12, 2015, won’t select Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston with the top pick in the draft.

Former Bucs defensive lineman and SiriusXM NFL Radio host Booger McFarland believes even Stevie Wonder can see what will happen come the night of April 30.

Joe know this rankles the Marcus Mariota Gang, but NFL folks, and those who used to work for a living breaking down talent, all say the same thing: Winston has demonstrated he can play in a pro-style offense. Mariota may be able to, but he has not demonstrated this on gamefilm.

If you have to make a multi-million dollar gamble, what do you trust, your eyes or your heart? Joe would trust both. They both lead to Jameis.

Even SECbooger sees the tremendous value of taking Winston.

  2. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Waiting for that one guy to point out something particular about Booger…..

  3. JTHV Says:

People who think Mariota is a #1 pick need to be brought behind the farmhouse and shotgunned in the head.

  4. Tom Says:

The intelligent types all point to Jameis. The gators fans who comment here can’t stomach the idea

Do anybody know what our offense looks like yet?

  6. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

It’s not even about playing in a “pro style” offense. It’s about making “pro style ” throws.

I know Jameis can throw the ten yard out across the field with a guy draped all over him because i’ve seen him do it. I know that Jameis can throw the back shoulder fade to perfection, can bring his team back when down in the fourth quarter, and can stand in the pocket and take a hit while delivering a dime on the 15 yard in pattern. I know because I have seen him do it. Over and over and over.

Can Marriota do all of those things? Maybe, maybe not. We don’t know because we have never seen him do it.

  7. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Yeah…Jameis’s good stats are playing alley opp with future NFL starters 2013
Yeah…Jameis’s bad stats trying to play alley opp with not ready for prime time college guys 2014 …throwing 17 bone head INT’s followed by arguning with HC and shoving officals…

  8. Ray Rice Says:

Hey guys!!! Did you hear McINT got his a$$$$ cut? $$$$hit I’m still celebrating that. Who the hell has time for Mariota and Winston right now. We should all be rejoicing and singing a Katy Perry song.

    That tape doesn’t count!

Any FSU homer will tell you that. Neither does the 17 picks against some suspect ACC defenses.

  15. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    @Chef
and you can shoot out the screen on your HD TV when he throws bonehead INT’s or fumbles backwards…..

  16. Carlstoe Says:

I enjoyed the Rose Bowl tape! Some team scored 59! Some QB put them in position to keep scoring! Shameis was in meltdown mode and yelled at his coach. Bucs brass saw the whole incident and said hell no!

  17. Brandon Says:

I understand those NOT wanting Winston, they think gambling on him growing up is worse than gambling on Mariota making the pro transition… I get it, I just don’t agree, I think it a lot harder to play QB than it is to hone and refine one’s character.

  18. Posey99 Says:

I don’t think many people in the Mariota mob would say he’s any better on the field than Jamies. I support Mariota but 100% agree that Jameis has talent above Mariota in the passing game. The problem here is the elephant in the room with jameis. There was an elephant in the room with manziel too and I preferred Carr over him because of it. All these guys are talented and have potential. You can say whatever you want about what he did or didn’t do but there’s a documentary film coming to theaters soon and we all know the last thing we need is another media circus with negative PR especially with the newly elected leader of our team. The nfl and roger goodell took a beating last year on this stuff and the advocacy groups are ready to pounce. I hope no matter which way we go it works out.

Careful! The “Whiners for Winston” posse will soon be on the attack.

  20. JTHV Says:

    Lmao @ fungi nails,

Or completely ignore his 26-1 record to make your incredibly idiotic points about turnovers.

Btw, that Louisville defense was ranked #1 in the country when they were up 21-6 against Jameis at halftime. What did Jameis do? Beat them 36-10 in 2nd half. Go away with your idiocy.

You Jameis haters are running out of gas (and time).

    Go Bucs!

  21. Nick Says:

    @biff barker

You spelled “Winners for Winston” wrong.

  22. Todd Kiper Says:

Interceptions in the Louisville game is a concern? Did you actually watch that game? Two perfectly placed balls were picked because a Receicer cut off his route. The second half of that game was a clinic on how to play the QB position

  23. Chef Paul Says:

    JoeJoes

Won’t be my tv!! Maybe the neighbors

  24. Todd Kiper Says:

BB guns and soda does not an elephant make……maybe a mouse…..maybe

  25. NewTampaChris Says:

Chris Landry has repeatedly said that QB is one position where you CAN’T hide bad character. So I assume it will come down to the interviews of Winston — is he a sociopath or just a misguided young man?

  26. JTHV Says:

Not to mention that Louisville game was AT LOUISVILLE and against the #1 rated defense in the country.

All Jameis did was dominate the 2nd half and further cement himself as the best QB since Andruw Luck.

Nite nite haters. Your time is up.

Jameis @ #1 is all but announced.

The Skyway Bridge is waiting …

    ———————–

    That’s effing classic!!!

  28. Mr. Patrick Says:

In some ways Winston’s off field problems are working to his advantage because they are covering up and deflecting attention from his on field problems. People keep saying that he’s just immature and will eventually grow up blah blah blah. That deflects from his interceptions, inconsistencies, long, slow deliberate wind up, shoddy footwork, carelessness with the ball and his inability to read underneath coverages.
With people just assuming that he’s superior on the field and inferior off of it, they need to take a closer look

  29. JTHV Says:

    From ESPN RECAP –

Louisville was left to wonder how it lost a big lead.

“It’s very disappointing,” cornerback Charles Gaines said. “Jameis Winston is an outstanding quarterback. HE MADE A LOT OF CHECKS AND HAD US GUESSING.” – Said no one ever about Marcus Mariotta.

  30. Todd Kiper Says:

Mr. Patrick, you are right. I’m sure none of these teams, scouts and analysts are bothering to watch the tape. And for the few that have bothered, I’m sure they are all completly wrong by saying he is by far the best NFL ready prospect.

  31. Tiny tim Says:

    Patrick Says:

    ————————-

Now this statement is why mothers should not do drugs while pregnant. All of these experts that says “when you look at the tape, Winston is better.” Yet Patrick seems to believe they are “assuming” Winston is better. You sir everyday show this entire board why you are a joke.

No one is assuming anything. Your opinion just differs from the vast majority of NFL draft analysts and former players.

But, someday I’m sure you will be paid for your pro football opinions. No doubt about it.

Please show me where an expert says Mariotta will be better for the long run. Please don’t make stuff up.

  40. Mr. Patrick Says:

Just because people say that Winston is the “most NFL ready” does not mean that he is NFL ready. He and Mariota are being elevated because they are the best out of a very weak QB class.
Just because a mule outruns a goat does not make it a thoroughbred

  41. Bucs55 Says:

    87

What tape youre lookin at the highlights look at the rest of the game i could give you tonz of reasons why the bucs pass on him and draft mariota and sit him of a year to learn

  42. Tiny tim Says:

    @Buc55

The experts I see all say Winston is not only most nfl ready, but he is the best QB prospect period. So yea, they are saying he is better. Also, there are some experts that say he is the best QB prospect in the last 10 years next to Luck. So yea, they are saying he is better. Sorry you missed that. Keep up…

  43. Pickgrin Says:

Will Mr. Patrick and NYbucsfan just slink away never to return once the Bucs draft Winston? God I hope so.

  45. Mr. Patrick Says:

Absolutely not! That’s when the circus and the fun starts

  46. Tiny tim Says:

FYI to all the posters that keep blasting FSU fans………………………You don’t have to be a FSU homer to see that Winston is better. You do however have to be a FSU hater if you believe/think he is not good.

  49. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Chris Landry has repeatedly said that QB is one position where you CAN’T hide bad character.

Chris Landry was also a part of the Tennessee Titans organization when they drafted Steve McNair. You know…the guy who was murdered by his 20 yr old mistress.

  50. JTHV Says:

Todd McShay went as short to say Jameis is the best QB in the draft since Luck and 2nd best in 10 years.

    Buc55, that’s pretty clear bud.

  51. Pickgrin Says:

” if u turn the tape on its not even close Winston clearly better”

    True That!

  52. SuperBuc Says:

I’d say in around 2 or 3 years, at exactly the same time, Winston will be flaming out while Mariota will be blossoming

  53. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

McShay went on to explain just how highly graded Winston is based on his performance alone.

“From purely on the field, the grade for Jameis Winston is just behind Andrew Luck’s in the last ten years and there is nobody else in between,” said McShay.

  54. LargoBuc Says:

Im a gator fan and its obvious the Bucs should choose Winston. The guys a winner. With his passion and drive he’ll be able to fix any minor flaws in his mechanics. Sure yiu can bring up off the field stuff all you want but any player you bring in could potentialy get in trouble. Jameis is worth the risk.

  55. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Mariota will last 3 games in the NFL before he’s sitting on IR.

  56. Mr. Patrick Says:

I think that the best fit for Winston would be a team that is in a state where they don’t have Publix

  57. BFFL Says:

Booger obviously has an agenda to promote Winston because his claim that the tape isn’t even close is absolutely rediculous

  58. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Below are Mayock’s first set of rankings for each position, via NFL.com:

    Quarterback
    1. Jameis Winston, Florida State
    2. Marcus Mariota, Oregon
    3. Bryce Petty, Baylor
    4. Brett Hundley, UCLA
    5. Garrett Grayson, Colorado State

Winston and Mariota are easily the two best at their position this year. Mariota is the safer pick to some, while Winston is the more talented. Petty and Hundley both have flaws but are seen as potential second- or third-round selections. Grayson is a bit of a wild card, somewhat surprisingly ranked ahead of Sean Mannion.

  59. Bucs55 Says:

sorry i was gettin on my computer …. Come on 87 you dont really think that thats just sh** talkin now …. people continue to say that winston is the best qb to come on since andrew luck but he is no were close with all problems he as not just off the field but on the field

  60. Mr. Patrick Says:

I remember JaMarcus Russell winning the National Championship, his head coach praising him for his work effort and leadership, and Kiper and McShay praising him as having all the tools, superior talent, being the most NFL ready and being the next “prototype” style of QB
    Hey Winston supporters, sound familiar?

  61. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

McShay says if he were to grade Mariota on NFL-type throws alone, he would be a third- or fourth-round quarterback. However, because “he is so special at everything else he does,” McShay still has him as the second-best quarterback in the draft.

  62. JTHV Says:

    BFFL,

I’m gonna trust a guy who sat in the film room alongside Sapp, Rice and Marinelli doing nothing but scouting and game planning opposing QB tapes.

Considering this only points out how completely f’n ridiculous your comment about this topic is. Lol @ you BFFL

    Go Bucs!

  63. Bucs55 Says:

if you read everything that lovie is asking from his QB alot of it dosent Fit Winston They brought a Qb last year in Mccown to protect the Ball Because of his Pass year in Chicago trowin for 12tds and 1int IF you look Up winstons numbers hes a Gun slinger that could make all the trows in the NFL but will also make tonz Of turnovers in the prosess you can blame it on his WR or His (Eye Vision) thats another thing that scares me about him because he said he didnt not like to put on eye Contacts or you can just blame it on him been a Gun slinger

  67. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Patrick, I also remember Jamarcus Russell looking like a contestant on the biggest loser and having trouble staying away from purple drank….neither of which is a problem for Jameis who is consistently described as a gym rat and has no substance abuse problems

  68. SuperBuc Says:

I agree with Mr. Patrick. Jameis Winston is just JaMarcus Russell 2.0

  69. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Most analysts don’t get the first overall pick wrong…especially when most of them are saying the same thing.

Come to grips with it soon!

  70. Mr. Patrick Says:

    @ Cream
And where did Winston pick up his alleged Rape victim? In a bar

  71. Nybucsfan Says:

One is booger a QB guy umm no. Two I think the worst thing you can do coming into the NFL as a QB is having a slow release and your boy jameis “the hunting ground” Winston has. Cosell if you need a talent evaluation said he needs to speed everything up. Mariota has a fast release. If your line is bad you will need to get the ball out fast.

  72. lord cornelius Says:

I’d have more of a problem with Winston’s interceptions if they came in critical game situations; but the vast majority have been in the 1st half when the offense was out of rythym. They’d make adjustments and typically dominate the 2nd half. It was just the nature of the 2014 team. There were a ton of games he could have lost composure and lost the game; but he never did. The only loss of his career was a 5 turnover team blowout where he was still moving the offense each possession.

  73. JTHV Says:

    Patrick,

You really are running out of gas.

You can’t argue with any validity against Jameis’ on field abilities so you result to slinging unsubstantiated mud that will go nowhere in the courts.

Hence why BSPN, TMZ and NYTimes have all backed away from Winston and no longer follow behind his every move.

Move on bud, your shtick is completely played out.

  74. JTHV Says:

Jameis Winston will be a Buc.

Cry, whine, sling mud, bitch and moan.

Or just accept it and move on to Round 2 of the 2015 NFL Draft and other potential picks.

We’re all Bucs fans here … why do we feel it necessary to forget that?

  75. Skyline Crew Says:

Mariota over Winston all day every day for me. Will wait until after FA to see what QB they grab or don’t grab. That will be more telling. If we keep Glennon we will draft Winston. If we grab Hoyer and trade Glennon we will take Mariota. If we grab Hoyer and keep Glennon we are taking Williams. You can say that we are taking Winston because he can play in a pro-style offense, but we don’t even know what type of offense we are running yet. We are all making leaps to try and justify our opinions. I say prepare yourself for 4 outcomes: Mariota, Williams, Winston, Trade back.

Josh, probably the same reason Patrick thought Jamarcus won the National Championship in 2005, which was Vince Young. Pretty obvious.

  103. LargoBuc Says:

Lovie cant and wont risk his career by drafting project Mariota. Plus we have no QB to bridge the gap while Mariota learns. Winston has the skill set to be ready in September. Lovie needs wins and he needs wins NOW. Thats why Lovie and Licht will bring in Winston as opposed to the project. Hell Lovie would probably roll with Glennon before he drafts the project first overall.

J Winston will be the best thing to happen to the Bucs since winning the Superbowl. You Winston haters are really putting yourselves in a bad place. When Winston starts taking us to the playoffs almost every year and wins SBs… yes SBs for the Bucs, what are you gonna do or say then when the team you claim to love is winning with the QB that you treated like crap and cut down with no proven evidence. it will be sad or you but the rest of us Buc fans will be loving life and our Bucs. hehe!!!
    GO BUCS!!!

  106. Yeah It's me! Says:

And im no FSU Fan. Anybody that watch’s Winston and Mariota on film and thinks Mariota is better really knows nothing about NFL football. You might know college some but not Pro ball. I bet most of you are under 35 years of age and didn’t grow up watching the NFL. You think that running around in College and throwing to wide open WRs say’s you will be great in the NFL. You really don’t understand the NFL QB position and why Winston is the best QB prospect since Luck.

  107. tgreg Says:

And so goes Joe’s latest mancrush. How did the Manziel thing work out? Bet the Bucs could get him for a song but even L&L aren’t that stupid

  108. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Largobuc,I salute you. Your bode of confidence for a guy that was the QB for your teams number 1 rival says alot about your character being a true gator fan. Im glad you can see beyond our teams colors and base your opinion on what you’ve seen on the field.

  109. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Jack, saying that releasing Mccown is a smokescreen is just plain idiotic.

Let me explain this to you. A smokescreen is a rumor fed to some flunky reporter to put in the public realm to create confusion….releasing your starting qb from the previous year leaving you with only a below average qb on your roster? That’s the real deal fog horn in your facing blaring WE ARE TAKING A QUARTERBACK AT NUMBER ONE OVERALL

  110. DRAFT #5 Says:

I will say what it said before. Running QB’s do not last in this league. The NFL talent level compared to what MM faced in college will negate his running. He also has a history of injuries in college and you can bet he won’t stand up to the rigers of NFL week to week. See RGIII. What really concerns me is he is not a leader of men and as a QB that is what you need to be. Draft Jameis and don’t look back.

  111. lurker Says:

    win it’s in his name

    #winninwithwinston #justwinstonbaby

    lemon, it’s in mike glennon

  112. White Tiger Says:

How aboiut Fameis himself stating what a special QB Marriota is, or that watching him on tape, it’s clear Marriota studies a lot of film? How about when pressed Fameis said that he’s picked up some things by watching Marriota?

Even Fameis admits that Marriota is a better prospect…

  113. TIm Says:

How much trouble is he & his posse going to get into when he becomes a millionaire? Thats the scary part. Every prospect no matter how so called NFL ready is going to have to work his butt off every day & nite & learn the NFL game because it wont come near as easy as college, especially in the weak ACC. Who do you think is the harder worker especially if it doesnt go well and you know at times it wont go well as a rookie. Marcus is the man!!!!

  114. Dr Feelgood Says:

Those of you that keep referencing the Louisville game….that’s all of the endorsement you need!!! Guess what!! BADASS Winston shook off the first half and won a Thursday NIGHT game in a hostile environment and GOT IT DONE!!! The guy is SO clutch in the 4th quarter, as opposed to the 2014 Bucs, who shat the bed and gave up leads. The man wins, and we NEED a winner, period!!! And I want a QB who is losing in the first round of the College Football Playoff, to get in the ass of his coach and try to get the sh$t right!!! Marcus is a project, not “the men”. Even his NFL supporters say that! And, Winston praising Marriota is a sign that he IS maturing!! He didn’t say he is a better prospect…and I’m damned sure Marcus can learn a TON from watching Winston, the MOST NFL READY QB IN THIS DRAFT!!!
