A Pause For Celebration

December 7th, 2014

Where’s your Jacquies Smith jersey?

How bout a negativity break after a toilet flush of a Bucs loss in Detroit.

Those beers and cocktails you’ll be downing don’t have to drown sorrow only.

Left defensive end Jacquies Smith had two sacks today, and they weren’t in garbage time. The guy can play the edge. He clubbed Matthew Stafford’s shin from behind as the Lions QB tried to escape, and he hunted Stafford from the weak side like a rabid dog and took drilled him into the turf.

Smith now has six sacks this season. Six! No Bucs defensive end has had that many since Michael Bennett in 2012.

Smith is a legitimate pass rusher. You don’t just fall into six sacks. Besides, Smith sacks aren’t cheap ones by any means. He’s also been in the faces of quarterbacks and had his share of impact that isn’t in the stat sheets.

Signed in September after the Bills cut him, Smith, 24, first made his mark with a fumble recovery in Pittsburgh. It’s been a steady climb from there.

Yes, there is something to celebrate tonight.

Michael Johnson should do the right thing and give Jacquies his game checks from here on out. What a waste Johnson is and how nice Smith is to mitigate that disaster.

  2. BUC4LIFE79 Says:

    @ Joe
Thanks Joe for the reminder that this season’s stocking isn’t all filled with lumps of free agent coals…Jack Smith as Lovie has affectionately named him dam sure looks like the REAL FREAKIN DEAL.

  3. knucknbuc Says:

Then you look at the other side and Michael Johnson is getting pancaked by tackles and te s galore. That dude is horrible I have no idea why he still starting Bowers is better then him and I wish clayborn was here at least he’s not a quitter.

  4. Buccfan37 Says:

That was a nice trip up of the Lions QB on that 3rd down stop.

  5. Lovie equals 2015 Blackouts Says:

    Who???

I don’t even watch the Bucs anymore… lol. Maybe I need to go watch some games on NFL rewind. What games did he do well in? I would hate to waste my time watching Lovie’s travesty of a team.

What this head coach has fielded this year is NOT entertainment. AT ALL.

These Bucs are an undisciplined kind of suck too.

  6. DallasBuc Says:

Finding Smith does not make up for signing Magic Mike Johnson. Here is a perfect opportunity for the media (ahem) to directly call out the atrocious talent evaluation on this football team.

  7. Wilder 32 Says:

I’m watching now just to see the defense improve and solidify with each game. We have a Top10 defense next year with some minor tweaks. Draft OLine and qb with top 3 picks next year then best available from there. I have confidence that this is the last lousy seasons we’re gonna have to suffer through for a while…

  8. BucPuck Says:

How about Larry English’s sack? He destroyed Stafford. While it is painful to watch the Bucs this season, we have had horrible luck. That sack, fumble ping pongs right into a lineman and then the batted pass, lands in Bell’s hands for a TD.

  9. rayjay1122 Says:

Smith has been a pleasant surprise on the defensive end so that means he will not make the active roster next season.

  10. Brandon Says:

Johnson had two QB knockdown and played decently. Some of you need to watch the games instead of relying solely on the stat sheet for your info.

  11. NJBucsFan Says:

Don’t be fooled. This is not Lovie Smith using his talent evaluation skills….this was pure luck but glad to have him.

  12. Mike10 Says:

So funny that Johnson is going to lose his job on the blindside to a guy that was a waiver pick up!!!! And the best part is that it’s honestly not even a question who’s better.

I don’t know what this speaks about L+L?

  13. OB Says:

Replacing a few players on defense will greatly improve a good defense, replacing the head coach will greatly improve the team.

  14. DR.D Says:

    Yeah great title ,
So I was forced to listen to wdae today and some fool called him
A rotational player at best ha wow I’m going to miss 98.7 tomorrow …

Sad sad day going to miss the commish.

  15. McAlpinMike Says:

OK Joes I’ll rephrase. To Blackouts; WHY ARE YOU ON JOEBUCSFAN?!? You claim you don’t watch the Bucs yet HERE you are commenting?! GO AWAY Mr Fair Weather.

  16. tgreg Says:

@ Brandon…sooo impressive when a hand picked, over paid FA plays decently

  17. David 54 Says:

I’ve always appreciated Clayborn’s motor. Jacquies now, too, with good results.

  18. Ray Rice Says:

It’s awesome the YUCS don’t have to pay him $100 million for sub par performances.

  19. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

    Where’s your Jameis Winston jersey?

  20. Pickgrin Says:

Jacquies Smith’s play has been a very pleasant surprise.

That picture just reminds me how much I dislike the new uniforms. I can’t believe whoever had final say on the unis went with that choice. They suck. Especially the way the numbers look.

  21. C. Alaka Says:

Johnson will be traded during the offseason! Even if it’s a 7 round pick DO THE TRADE! Cut your lost & eat that cap for that yr. Clayborn comes back & give him a shot to at least see what he can do.

By the way Joe I hate to disagree w/ you b/c the Bucs D played pretty damm good yesterday for those who didn’t watch the game. When your offense gives you absolutely nothing most of the game, how many times can you hold a team to 3 in your own territory all day long. The one time we pinned them on their own goal line was when David got hurt, they put worthless Flechter in & he proceed to give up that huge run! Bell had that fluke TD catch & most of Stafford’s throws were short which is why is completion percentage is so high. A offense that’s middle ranked & Bucs are fine!
