Preseason Nightmare Is Over

August 29th, 2013

Rookie QB Mike Glennon was 7-for-16 for 63 yards tonight, plus a fumble and an interception.

Bring on the Jets in 10 short days!

The Bucs put on an ugly show for the hometown faithful tonight, minus the sweaty cheerleader dances. The Redskins manhandled the Bucs en route to a 30-12 victory.

Tom Crabtree was carted off with an ankle injury. Mike Glennon was horrendous. The pass blocking was miserable. The Bucs’ tackling gave Joe flashbacks to Sean Jones and Sabby The Goat. Special teams had massive issues in nearly all phases. And the Bucs’ sack total? Zero.

Throw in Kevin Ogletree looking like he gave up on a Glennon pass, and it was a very forgettable night.

Bright spots were linebacker kicker Rian Lindell drilling a 50-yard field goal with plenty of leg, Najee Goode’s pick-6 and Eric Page in the return game and flashing manhood over the middle as a receiver.

The best news is none of it matters.

Stick with Joe through the night for more on the game and stuff from the Bucs locker room.

    Thank god

    Good game.

Hah…I typed that with a straight face! Bet more people like Freeman after tonight!

    “None of it matters.”

    Tell that to Crabtree!

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Check the waiver wires!!!

  5. Couch Fan Says:

No more excuses from here on out. Pre-Season is over. Now we see what this team is made of. LETS GO BUCS!!

  6. Danny Says:

In the words of John McKay-“Three or four plane crashes and we’re in the playoffs.”

  7. Eric Says:

    In free we trust.

Thank goodness the idiotic sham preseason is over with.

    Despise it.

  8. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Eric Page will get us a few kick returns this year.

I know why they played DBs at RB. They didn’t want to risk opening day depth…which means they are keeping James & Leonard. Hillis didn’t do too badly. I could see him as a reserve halfback and fullback.

Owusu was a gametime decision. Most likely he will go to PS and they decided game exposure would increase the odds of a team claiming him off waivers.

If we have to rely on Dimke for kicks, we are in deep trouble. How do you miss an extra point?????

  9. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

I predict this will be the easiest cut to 53 players in the history of the Bucs Franchise.

  10. Eric Says:

When asked about the execution of his team he said “it’s a good idea”.

  11. chris Says:

What this preseason shows is we lack quality depth. Our 2nd/3rd units are not that good no one can really rotate or fill in for our starters.

I thought Rock star had an eye for talent?

Glennon was rough tonight. Shows hes a rookie who isn’t ready. Freeman is the QB, but there still is questions around him? Hopefully this team can turn it on come week 1.

  12. RBellBuc Says:

I just know that when 1987 gets back from the game he’s gonna be headhunting. The dude’s got a library at his disposal.

  13. Solaire of Astora Says:

Chris I think Glennon was more of a Schiano pick than a Dom pick. Also anyone else think maybe Eric Page should be the third receiver Ogletree seems to have attention problems during the preseason

  14. Splengo Says:

What this preseason shows is that we have a group of college coaches trying to prepare an NFL team. If you guys think we’re going to flip a switch and play like a pro team next week, you’re going to be grossly disappointed. We are what you see.

  15. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

chris, we have depth that is good in some spots. I think our weakest spots are DT, OG & CB when it comes to depth.

The only depth spot ignored this off season has been OG. The rest had a lot of guys brought in.

The biggest screwup in the draft was the Glennon pick. I understand we needed better QB depth, but I feel we could have gotten one just as good later. Banks and Spence were the best picks.

Our biggest need is kicker. We are really going to suffer there if we can’t get someone that can make extra points…at least.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Splengo

You have a short or selective memory…..this team beat the Atlanta Falcons in Atlanta in their last regular season game….they came close to or beat many other NFL teams last year.
They are also a better team this year….this you will soon see.

  17. MadMax Says:

@Rbell, are you scared of 1987 or something? Im not, as are many others….smdh

    Dude. Get a grip! Lol

It wasn’t just #1s held out of tonights game. It was some backups too.

I can see it now…we’ll beat the Jets and fans will say “it was the jets.”

We’ll beat the Saints and we’ll hear “the Saints sucked last year!”

And on and on…because some people have to see the worse possible scenario.

  19. MadMax Says:

God I hope we beat the Jets, and especially the Saints.

  20. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    I’ll say it again.

BUCS WILL GO TO THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

Well I just got home from the game. I don’t know what adjective to put down to describe what I saw tonight. Horrible? Pathetic? Disgusting? Yucks? Yikes? Wow it will be easy to make these cuts. The first one should be Mike Glennon. Pick up anyone off the waiver wire at QB. I don’t even care if it IS Tebow. Joe there is NO SUCH THING as the Mike Glennon Mob ANYMORE and if there is. They are absolute morons. We as Buc fans better pray that Freeman gets it together and if he gets hurt we are screwed. I’m not even going to mention the defense, because their was none. There must have been about 40-50 missed tackles. They all had to be 3rd string, then again the Skins were playing all 3rd stringers too. These are guys that are trying to make the team? Really? I heard Schiano’s voice after the game. I think he needs a halls throat drop or 5. That and probably some Aleve. I really wished I would have just stayed home, but my wife had surgery today and the extra ticket was a B-day present for my mom. The 2 of them were supposed to go. I almost told her to go with her friend, then just decided to go at the last minute. Ha alas I finally found the adjective after this long paragraph. Sickening.

I’m serious if any one of you people ever mention Mike Glennon should start over Freeman at any point in this season, you are a total moron.

  22. MadMax Says:

I was feeling that too, before preseason started Bonzai….not so much now. But it is “just preseason” so maybe what Ive seen should just be gouged from my memory….lol.

  23. Splengo Says:

    Tampabaybucfan,

We’ve regressed. That was then, this is now. You think what we’ve seen is just a ruse to make everybody think we are that bad?

@Rbell, are you scared of 1987 or something? Im not, as are many others….smdh

There’s no need to be scared of me I’m a lovable lil fuzz ball.

  25. MadMax Says:

I was disappointed in Glennon too…..but he is a rookie….sooo….
Ya, waiver wire! We need serious help at QB!

  26. MadMax Says:

    you know im not 😉

  27. tonytwocents Says:

@bonzai – “It wasn’t just #1s held out of tonights game. It was some backups too.”

thats mostly true, but Schiano put our #1 TE in there…. as a FB. since he obviously thinks Crabtree is versatile, playing two positions, WHY PLAY HIM??!

Im behind Freeman 100%, Im behind our entire team. but if Crabtree (basically our 6th offensive lineman) misses games, and our team carries this preseason funk with them into next week, I’m gonna start questioning the New Schiano (Dis)Order.

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Splengo

See you after the Jets game….then tell me we have regressed….
Wait until we play a meaningful game with our starters on the field most of the game….then tell me we have regressed.
All of you who are panicing now will feel like fools soon.
    Have some patience.
    “Toes on the line”

  29. tonytwocents Says:

RBell called it, ’87 is right on cue.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

Splengo… I can tell you this there was a lot of 3rd stringers in tonight. I did find one good thing about the whole game, pass protection. Did Glennon get sacked? I don’t think so, he might of though. I don’t know I was not the driver to the game tonight so I was hammered pretty much and fighting for beads by the 3rd qrtr. Some little girl felt bad for me and threw me some of her beads. I mean I was clearing over like 15 rows, Row after row after row just to get beads. People were cracking up at me. I put on a better show than the Bucs tonight.

No on a serious note. It was 3rd stringers on D most of the time and the plays we ran were vanilla. 3 yard routes and crap.

  31. tonytwocents Says:

@’87, I’ll even take Orlo over Glennon.

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Buc 1987

Sorry you had to experience that….I was in my easy chair in NC listening to the game….felt bad about it but didn’t have high expectations.
By the way…did you see Myron anywhere at the RayJay tonite?

  33. Buc1987 Says:

tonytwocents …I’ll take the Skins 3rd string QB over Glennon.

  34. MadMax Says:

Hey Tony, sorry about that earlier….I didnt know you were quoting a song and mistook it as you just being an azz….sorry man…..

  35. MadMax Says:

I agree 1987, he was looking good.

  36. Buc1987 Says:

You wanna know how vanilla it was there was what 9 minutes left in the game and Schiano was running the ball on 3rd and 5 with Norton a WR. I think he ran it 3 straight times. I think coach just wanted to run out the clock.

  37. Splengo Says:

    Bonsa,

I’ve seen 4 preseason games. Don’t need a grip to know what I saw. I’ve seen most of the preseason season and Oakland even looks more prepared. Say what you want, but you’ve seen the same thing. I can tell from your post, you’re worried too.

  38. tonytwocents Says:

@Max, no worries. its an NFL comment board. its what we do!

  39. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Buc 1987

Sorry you had to experience that….the good thing is you won’t miss the 22 that we cut…and I’m sure we will be checking the waiver wires for upgrades on a couple of the 53.
By the way…..did you see Myron anywhere there tonight?

Splengo thinks we have regressed…..not possible we are “Myronless”

  40. Buc1987 Says:

Yha I was kinda bummed when Crabtree went down, but they said nothing is broken. It does not look good though for him.

Did I mention the missed tackles? I know everyone that was sitting by me must of got tired of me saying it.

  41. Andrew 1 Says:

holy sh!t, this fan base is full of pansies. sack up.

  42. tonytwocents Says:

I feel bad for ’87, that they made you pay full price for those games. I hope they let you sneak in your own liquor.

  43. MadMax Says:

Before the game started, Barber made the comment that he made the right decision after talking with some of the guys on the field.

That speaks to low moral which speaks to Coaches!

    WTH is really going on?

  44. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Andrew

    I agree…what a bunch of crybabies…..man up…take your ass whoopin’ and move on….
We will take it out on the lowly Jets next week……and all of this will be forgotten.

  45. Buc1987 Says:

No Myron sightings. Sadly though I’m wondering if Schiano might need to go back to his pissed off ways I saw pratically no motivation tonight. Like guys were not trying to make the team. I saw one play where our defender just stood there and watched the RB run right by him. I mean literally stood there unblocked and everything. Evryone noticed it in my section, because every one said it at the same time. This will be the LAST preseason game I ever go to. First the Ravens and then this?

  46. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ MadMax

maybe his fellow players honestly told him that at his age he should hang it up. why oh why does this fan base automatically assume the worst.

  47. Architek Says:

    Relax guys

  48. Splengo Says:

    Tampabaybuc,

I’m sure you have Twitter. I’m not alone. Ira Kaufman just said that he has never seen a Buc team approach the preseason with so much disdain. I don’t think it’s disdain. We have great talent on this team. I think it’s incompetence.

  49. MadMax Says:

Could be Andrew….but I didnt feel it that way, the way he said it with the expression on his face.

  50. tonytwocents Says:

@Tampabaybucfan – “We will take it out on the lowly Jets next week”

I hope so. I wanna see Geno get lit-up & baptized by fire the way our great D of ’99 welcomed McNabb.

  51. Buc1987 Says:

I know one thing though, the fans in my section now know I’m for real. That I’m a hardcore fan. One woman said dude your a trip.
One guy stopped my mom and said this is your son? Man he’s out of his mind over this team. I responded drunkly. That’s because I bring it and you people better be ready to get loud when the season starts as I pointed all around at everyone. Mom was proud to tell everyone about my cousin playing for the SB team and kept showing off his jersey to everyone. Eh it was kind of fun, just getting the fans riled up.

  52. Andrew 1 Says:

why try to analyze it then. it could have been anything…

  53. MadMax Says:

    Who was your Cousin?

  54. Buc1987 Says:

Andrew 1 not me. I’m still pumped up for the season. I really do think Schiano DESPISES preseason games.

  55. Buc1987 Says:

Max..Meh just the long snapper..but hey he got a ring. Ryan Benjamin out of USF. First USF player to ever play for the Bucs, which just happened to be my favorite team for 15 years at the time.

  56. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Splengo

So we have great talent on this team that is incompetent?

    Take a 9 day cruise…relax…enjoy 8 meals a day…drink a lot…play some slots…maybe some blackjack…throw your old lady overboard….come back….sit back and watch a real team play the “Revisless Jets”

  57. Buc1987 Says:

He owns an A/C company in Pasco now. Only played for 2 yrs. Got signed the 4th week into the SB season. Still good friends with Alstott and Grammatica though.

  58. Andrew 1 Says:

Stay strong bucs fans. our support will pay off.

  59. MadMax Says:

    $hit, thats cool man!

  60. Buc1987 Says:

Got to meet a lot of players thanks to him. Couldn’t get that coveted Sapp signature though. Like I’ve said before, Rush Limbaugh has a better chance of getting invited to the White House than the Bucs have at getting a Sapp autograph.

  61. MadMax Says:

I still wear his #99 from back then sometimes….the white one thats not so white anymore, lol.

  62. tonytwocents Says:

@Max, Ive got a 99 jersey too. My money probably went to his baby mama #2, yours probably went to baby mama #4.

  63. MadMax Says:

    Yup, hahaha.

  64. Buc1987 Says:

It was cool the only bad part about it all was that when he signed I was living in N.C. at the time. But when they came to play the Panthers, I got to stay at the team hotel. So that where I met a lot of the players. Like a kid in a candy store for me. He had ticket to the SB for me and everything. My entire family went to San Diego except me and I was the biggest fan. My wife just had our baby 2 weeks before the SB and I was living off of a waiters salary. So now I get to look at all the pictures of them at the SB with him and everythng else all the time. Bums me out a lot, but oh well such is life. Got my picture taken with the ring on though, I kissed it.

  65. Buc1987 Says:

See this is drunk 1987…typos and leaving words out and shyte

  66. tonytwocents Says:

thats awesome. having a kid, two weeks later winning the SB. from a glass half full perspective.

  67. MadMax Says:

😉 You had your priorities straight.

  68. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Buc 1987

Where in NC? I am in Wilmington…..was a season ticket holder in 1976…..go to a game every year for my B’day.
I am 14-2….losses to Pittsburgh a few years ago and to the Redskins last year.

  69. Buc1987 Says:

His number was 66 and Sapp was actually asked one time about the new LS by a reporter. He said something like hey he’s doing a good job and 66 is 99 upside down so he’s good with me. Something along those lines. Here’s some of the story they did in the Times back then about him.

Pro scouts liked the way Umholtz kicked, but a funny thing happened on his way to pro football — unknowingly he took Benjamin with him.

Scouts noticed Umholtz’s booming leg. But how about that snap — clean, spiraling, on the money.

“Some of the (scouts) started telling me to keep this up,” Benjamin said.

“I was shocked, big time. I just had to step back for a minute and readjust my thinking. Then I started thinking, “You know what? Maybe…”‘

Benjamin kept snapping, and as more scouts came to games, this time to check out Martin Gramatica’s little brother Bill, they kept noticing the long-snapper.

Each snap was a step, each step was toward the NFL

  70. Splengo Says:

    Tampabay,

Not the players. I think the players are great. I think the coaches are incompetent.

Anyway, don’t want to give the impression that I’m not a fan, so I’ll take your advice and chill. My take. If you quack, you’re a duck. I’m out, til next time.

  71. Buc1987 Says:

I lived in Raleigh for 5 years.

  72. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ 1987

Glad you got back to Tampa….I have a Daughter & new Grandson in Wesley Chapel…so will be visiting more often….I really miss seeing the Bucs live on a regular basis. Nothing else compares to the RayJay experience for me.

  73. RBellBuc Says:

I’m sorry but after reading the last dozen comments and seeing the harmony amongst the Freemanites and the Glennon Mobsters, I didn’t know whether to cry or to sing.

    Let’s sing together now<

    Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya
    Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya
    Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya
    Oh Lord, kumbaya

  74. Buc1987 Says:

Ever been to Raleigh? They have this thing called the beltline and it’s a giant circle around the city and you get off at all different exits. When Ronde picked off that pass for the dagger in the NFC Champ game. I was running late for work. I got dressed, grabbed my Buc flag and went hooting and hollering out the door, raised the flag out the window of my car. It was tough to hold onto the sucker going at 60 MPH all while I was honking my horn like crazy. Good times man! I went into my restaurants’ kitchen with this massive flag hollering and going nuts.

  75. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Buc 1987

Glad you were able to get back to Tampa…..wish I could. I’ll have to settle for one game per year at the RayJay….

  76. Buc1987 Says:

RBellBuc..lol..all it took was a crappy preseason Bucs loss too

  77. tonytwocents Says:

@Splengo, I wouldnt say theyre incompetent, because they basically have 3 NFL head coaches (Schiano, Davis, Wandstet…not to mention Jimmy Raye, whose been coaching in this league forever)

They need to find that identity. We all know about Sully, his background, his style of offense. But who the hell is Sheridan? Whats his scheme? Is it Schiano’s scheme? Or is it a Schiano/Davis scheme? Dungy had that Tom Landry silent but focused identity. Gruden was fire up ur ass! Rah, was premature. Who is Schiano? Whats the plan??

  78. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Buc 1987

Near Capitol Blvd or Six Forks Rd?

Better to waive the flag than “fire the cannons”….they’ll put your ass in jail in Wake Co. for that!!!

  79. Buc1987 Says:

My cousin called me the day he signed with the team. I was freaking out. I couldn’t believe it. I thought he was BS’ing me. I told him listen you better not f my team up, because I have a very good feeling we might go to the SB this year and if I see a ball going over the punters head or Gramaticas. I’m gonna be pretty damned pissed at you. He did not let me down.

  80. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Tonytwocents

I agree….there is plenty of experience with our coaching staff. I don’t think they are incompetent either. Lets see what happens when it counts.
Kauffman said the Bucs showed “disdain” for the preseason….that is telling me that they really don’t take it seriously at all and are using it for their own very specific purposes….and that doesn’t include winning the game.

  81. Buc1987 Says:

LOL I lived off six forks for a bit. Worked at an Applebees there too for like 2 yrs. Then I moved downtown near NC State. Like pretty much in the heart of NC State. Rivers was QB at the time and I’m a big Noles fan too. I went up there with a lot of Noles t-shirts and crap too. I had to hide them in my closet. They kept losing to the wolfpack.

  82. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Buc 1987

Hard to be a Noles & Wolfpack fan at the same time…
I live in Wilmingon…so you know how nice that is…..

  83. Buc1987 Says:

I lived in Knightdale too for awhile. I’ve lived all over this damn country. Always bringing my Buc gear with me. Representing from sea to shining sea. Vinny jersey in California. Reggie Cobb jersey in Georgia. We actually had a pretty good Buc fan club in Raleigh though about 15 members or so got together at a pretty cool place can’t remember the name of it, but it had couches and recliners to watch the game and eat wings and drink pitchers.

  84. MadMax Says:

I was in Greensboro for a short stint in 2007 (company relocation package)

Greensboro isnt Greenville SC though, so I worked through that contract and never sold my place.

  85. Buc1987 Says:

Okay now back to Buc talk…

“But who the hell is Sheridan? Whats his scheme? Is it Schiano’s scheme? Or is it a Schiano/Davis scheme?”

2cents I’m just as confused as you are about all that.

  86. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ MadMax

I lived in Greensboro too…..off Wendover from 1997-2000

I used to go to sportsbars to see the Bucs & many times I was the only Bucfan there……tough….now I have DirectV & enjoy watching all the games. Never…a blackout!!!

  87. Buc1987 Says:

Tampabaybucfan…I learned to love college basketball though for the 1st time. I learned to hate Duke. I of course pulled for the Wolfpack because no one wanted to play for them, when you have teams like NC and Duke around all the talent goes there.

  88. Buc1987 Says:

I really liked Raleigh a lot, but all my family lives in crappy Pasco county Florida. All Massachusetts northern transplants and they pick Pasco county of all places. Plus I had to move out of Raleigh, because I don’t speak spanish.

  89. MadMax Says:

I was working right beside the new fedex expansion off of Burgess rd. I didnt know many bars there but hit a strip club once, off of 40, lol.

  90. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Buc 1987

I went to USF and all they had was Basketball then….but moved to NC and found out that what they played at USF wasn’t really basketball….what they played in the Triangle was basketball.
Easy to hate Duke….TarHeels a bunch of pansies….
Wolfpack kicks both of them in Football though!!!!

  91. Buc1987 Says:

Yah I convinced my wife to purchase NFL ticket before the SB season. I saw Gruden picking up offensive player after offensive player McCardell and Joe Joe and Pittman and on and on and on. It was expensive back then too. Were both big Buc fans though and I convinced her it was our year, I just knew it was going to happen and her being prego it would save us money from going to the bar to watch the games.

  92. tonytwocents Says:

They seriously need to let Davis go. Its weird enough that Schiano hired his former boss, but I get that he needed someone with NFL experience to help him with the transition, and he got that from him last year.

Its time to cut the cord. Maybe he’s too nice to let him go, the same way he’s too nice not to sign all his former Rutgers players.

He needs to streamline the coaching pecking order, but he has Davis and Raye in ambiguous roles. Whatever…Fu(k it. its 1am. take care my Buccaneer Brethren and Sisteren?

  93. Buc1987 Says:

I think NFL ticket was like $280 bucks for the season back then maybe more.

  94. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Buc 1987

Enjoyed the NC chatter…..time for me to go “nighty-night”….

  95. Buc1987 Says:

Later 2cents….I gotta get up early to put the kids on the bus in the morning, because the wife did just have tube tying surgery today. So I’m out in about 15 minutes or so myself.

  96. Buc1987 Says:

okay later to you too then.

  97. Buc1987 Says:

The one thing I did noticed about the game tonight was that about 60% of the fans that actually did show up, were not wearing any Buc clothing at all.
It was kind of weird. It was like they were not really fans and were just given tickets for free or something. I had a family of brits about 6 seats away from me all dressed in plain clothes. Taking pictures of the field and such and texting like crazy not even watching the game most of the time.

  98. MR.T Says:

I got a feeling the Bucs will go with Lindell as our fg kicker. He made the 50 yarder with no problem and has a ton of nfl experience plus we only need him for 1 year so his age should be no problem. We’ll see how it all shakes Sat.

  99. Chris Says:

Lets get off glennon should be cut mob here. The kid has shown the ability to play in this league. He’s a rookie who isn’t ready to be a starter yet.

And we need to cut this “it’s just preseason crap”. This team looks ill-prepared. Laughable. I’m concerned a bit heading into Gotham. Gotta a week to get it together.

And my comment on Dom before: we have no deth and too much inexperience at the dline. Og there was no plan behind Joseph and nicks. And oh yeah : wr?????? Ogeltree? Dom must have only watched game tape of him week 1 vs NYG and not the rest.

Taking pictures of the field and such and texting like crazy not even watching the game most of the time.

Dude it’s a preseason game. It was something for them Brits to do while in town maybe? I wouldn’t have paid to see the 4th preseason game.

On that note I’m hoping to be in Gotham for the jets game! GO BUCS

yeah I normally give my tickets away to people who have either never been to a game or can’t afford to go. I’m sure a lot of fans do that for the 4th preseason game.

    Did he look bad? Yes

But he’s a rookie, not in his fifth year.

I won’t give up on the guy just yet, seems premature and hypocritical especially for anyone that still supports Freeman to give up on Glennon, OUR second string QB, during his first preseason ever after his first start ever in the NFL.

Still supporting a QB going into his fifth year who has plenty of inconsistencies himself, remember that before you down the rookie 😀
