“I Don’t Know What He’d Call”

September 16th, 2014

Tedford rightFor those who believe Jeff Tedford is secretly in the ear of quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo calling plays, that’s just not the case.

In fact, today Arroyo said he doesn’t know what Jeff Tedford would call.

Joe asked Arroyo, a Tedford protégé, if the offense looked like Tedford would have rolled out.

JoeBucsFan.com: Looking back at the last couple of weeks, the first two games, would say that the offense looks extremely close to what it would be if Jeff Tedford were here calling plays?

Marcus Arroyo: That would be hard for me to say because I don’t know what he’d call. We know the system fairly. I mean, I’ve been with him for two years. I know the system. I know it was a quarterback. I know it. I’m running his system. We’re running his system. But the play calls, I don’t know what he would have called in certain situations. I don’t know the answer to that. I don’t know how to answer it. I don’t know what Jeff would have called. He may have called a different call then. He may have called a different call on the quarterback keeper for a touchdown. I don’t know. Hard to tell. I don’t know if that’s really safe for me to answer.

So there you have it. More evidence that the loss of Tedford is having a major impact.

  2. Ray Rice Says:

I tell you one thing. He definitely would not have called Lovie over and asked for his permission to pass the dam ball!!!!!!

  3. Buddhaboy Says:

at least he was honest, but maybe a bit too much. Not sure if he was supposed to say that publicly or not. He is a young guy.

    We are in trouble.

  6. Buddhaboy Says:

what about dude with his hands on his face during the game. Not a good look at all. Jagodzinski?

  7. Nick2 Says:

Can we please get an Offensive Coordinator calling our plays and not a QB coach thats getting on the job training?? Thats not what we signed up for. Am I missing the up tempo I keep hearing about? Besides the Carolina game where it was pretty close to out of reach it hasnt happened. Everybody in the NFL runs up tempo when your down two touchdowns heading into the last minute of the game!!!

  8. flmike Says:

Tedford is still clutching his head in both hands and shaking it back and forth…

Hey hey that’s what I say. I can’t get no satisfaction!

  10. Nic Says:

This interview puts off that Arroyo has no idea what he’s doing and completely lacks confidence. I highly doubt he had any input to the offense during key situations.

  11. Uncle Albert Says:

God, the more these coaches speak, the more it sounds like the entire staff is just a train wreck. The left hand truly does not know what the right hand is doing. These first two games have been utterly agonizing to watch on all fronts.

  12. Jim Says:

Even us average fans understand you do not run the ball three straight plays in the redzone. It is also a good plan to take at least one shot in the end zone when you have ‘dunkaneers’ 6’5″ tall. If this guy can not think for himself a bit, he needs to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

At some point do we look for another coordinator? How long do we sit around and hope that Tedford will return?

Not sure if Lovie noticed but we have already lost two games…

  14. Aceofaerospace Says:

I’m at a loss for words.

  15. Buc1987 Says:

Ya see Joe you’re not the only one that’s allowed to be negative about the Bucs! 🙂

  16. Buddhaboy Says:

yeah, schiano’s Bucs from 2 years ago would stomp a mudhole in Lovies Bucs.

    Schiano got a raw deal.

Also, you have to think at some point, MAYBE IT IS THE PLAYERS>>>

Gerald MCCOY included. Lavonte David, Doug Martin, ETC>>>ETC>>>

Maybe we are a bunch of losers. They dont know how to win.

I have been having this feeling for some tme. THese guys need to take it in their own hands and man up and start winning.

  17. Buccfan37 Says:

I thought Tedford was hiding from the camera when they showed him sitting upstairs. Embarrssed maybe.

  18. DWE Says:

The whole thing for Tedford is to avoid stress. Frustration creates stress. I just don’t see how his stress level can be any higher than sitting there watching the bucs and being totally frustrated in having no control over the situation. Makes no sense.

  19. Tom Edrington Says:

All this tells us is that the Bucs have someone calling plays who is not qualifired to be an NFL offensive coordinator.

    How reassuring!

  20. FLBoyInDallas Says:

This is why Belichick and Schiano never let their assistants do interviews. They aren’t prepared for it or used to it. While it comes across a certain way in the eyes of fans, my bet is there’s nothing to see here.

  21. PELBUC Says:

New season but same old circus under the bigtop at OBP. MRSA and Freemangate last year. bad uniforms and fill in the blanks for the rest of this sorry ass season. Lots of wasted draft picks and FAs disguised as pro football players. This team has no personality or identity other than excuse making losers. But I guess we’ll just have to be “patient”.

  22. Oingo Boingo Says:

Buc fans sold a bill of goods with the Smith-Tedford-Licht trifecta. I welcome anyone to research Tedford’s tenure in the Pac 10. Not pretty.

  23. Buddhaboy Says:

I agree PelBuc. Maybe it is the players. Lets start blaming them and not the coaches. I think that is the real problem here. These guys suck.

We were 4 and 12 last year. And we are going to be 4-12 this year maybe.

We are who we thought we were.

  24. Joseph Mamma Says:

Buddhaboy: maybe we are bunch of loser’s? I don’t know if you’ve been keeping up with current events pal but we just got our asses kicked. There’s no maybe about it.

  25. Buddhaboy Says:

touche Joseph mamma. Ha ha you got me

“We were 4 and 12 last year.

And we are going to be 4-12 this year maybe.

We are who we thought we were.”

Yeah maybe it’s not the coaches. Maybe it’s ONE coach. The head coach. The one that got rid of 60% of the roster from last years 4-12 team.

SMH at some of you people!

  27. Buc1987 Says:

    Bucs fans! lol

  28. PELBUC Says:

Actually, to clarify, the problem is the players + conservative and bad coaching + bad management over the years. It’s a recipe for disaster we Bucs fans endure year after year. Bucs overpay for FAs other teams don’t want, they incorporate outdated offenses and defenses and even the most mundane of tasks (i.e. punts and field goals) are risky. Let’s not forget our stellar drafts. I say let other players play (Glennon, Tandy, etc.) since we know what we have in players such as McClown, Dashon Goldson and Barron. No one is a leader on this team.

  29. Soggy Says:

The football gods called they said if we want to win again we have to kiss them where they fart because we fired chucky…

  30. Bucamania Says:

Tedford looks sedated in the press box. Guy probably just suffered a heart attack. It’s a tough situation but Bucs should be looking for an interim OC.

  31. Buddhaboy Says:

Buc1987 – You got it all figured out it seems.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

Pelbuc….yes and someone had to bring in those “bad” players to begin with.

    Who’s fault is that?

  33. OAR Says:

In the famous words of Pvt Hudson “That’s it, man. Game over, man! Game over! What the f@#k are we gonna do now? What are we gonna do?”

  34. The Fuzzy Red Coin Purse Says:

You mean to tell us Bucs fans that Tedford doesn’t have any type of input as to what to call and when? Not even like a cheat sheet for Arroyo? I mean hell that’s not hard to do and can’t put a strain on his heart to list a few plays he would call in certain situations. Like 3rd and 7 on in the red zone? Maybe something like a playaction fake to the flats or a bootleg rollout and toss it up to the redwoods on either side of the field in the corner of the endzone? What about a screen pass or hell load 1 side with 3 WR set and have 1 run a come back route? WTF

  35. Bucamania Says:

Does anyone have the Jagodzinski pamphlet to give Arroyo?

  36. Soggy Says:

@The Fuzzy Red Coin Purse, good point, and why in the nfl would you have to be told that in the first place.. Were playing scared not a goog look for a buccaneer…The captain of the ship must be sea sick..

  37. Kevin#1 Says:

Joe is there any talk of whether Tedford or his little shadow will be calling plays this Thursday??? I am really hoping it’s finally going to be Tedford.

  38. Iron maiden Says:

    The bucs have more excuses

  39. gulfcoast Says:

Arroyo’s reply was 17 sentences long. He says “I dont know” in 7 of the 17 sentences. I just dont know either…..

  40. GhostofJohnGruden Says:

I was hoping to see “Well I know one thing for damn sure, he would have P-A-S-S-E-D the ball on THIRD and SEVEN from the nine yard line. Maybe thats why he is at a loss for words, he used them all up explaining such a stupid, stupid call.

  41. Louis Friend Says:

If he says “yes he would’ve called it”, he can be called out for being a liar. If he says “No, he wouldn’t have” – then it confirms he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Give the kid credit, he knows when not to answer a question. Too bad he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

  42. GhostofJohnGruden Says:

    @Buc1987

What four teams do you think we stand the best chance at beating this year to achieve that mark?

When I look at our schedule I am thinking 1-15 or maybe 2-14. Cincy, Baltimore, Green bay, Chicago, Carolina, even Cleveland looked good. We still have to play @Carolina and the Saints twice.

Unless something big happens We may not get to 4-12 this year.

  43. Big Rob Says:

Wow! What a fresh take Joe!
    http://awesomegifs.com/wp-content/uploads/dead-horse.gif

  44. crayhopper Says:

It’s a can’t win question for Arroyo. If he says Tedford would call the same thing he’s throwing his boss under the bus. If he say Tedford would not call the same thing, he’s throwing himself under the bus for not following his boss.

  45. buc'd Up Says:

1-15, 2-14? Shiz, with this type of coaching, this type of play calling, this type of defense, and if McCown doesnt pull his head out of his arse, and start making grown man decisions, then we could be looking at 0-16.

  46. Chef Paul Says:

    @Soggy,

I’ll take one for the team. I’m all puckered up. Now, point me to them fart holes!!!

  47. Pete 422 Says:

Play calling may have lost that game.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

I blame Lovie Smith. 0-6 here we come. Schiano days are here again….bring in Napoleon Dynamite and make it complete!

This is his baby. He calls the shots. He has as much, if not more control over this team than Bill Belichick does with the Pats.

  49. Chris Says:

I know this is a long shot but what if Tedford got into a fight with Lovie. There were yelling and arguing…and Tedford had a heart attack. They had huge differences with the offense and Lovie disliked what Tedford wanted to do. Something doesn’t seem right and it seems as though there is huge communication problems. Just a thought.

  50. Embarrassed Says:

    No just no lol

  51. Oingo Boingo Says:

Doesn’t matter what Tedford would call. Buc fans sold a bill of goods. He was a shooting star that was run out of Pac 10.

  52. Jim Says:

After hearing his press conference, how in God’s name is this guy calling plays?Lovie believes in ‘old school’ football. If that is truly his game plan then let the QB call the plays. Josh knows the plays & he can NOT do any worse.
