Dirk Koetter talks cash considerations and running back

Pick a name: Carlos Hyde, Dion Lewis, Jerick McKinnon, and more.

The Bucs were hunting a big-game running back in free agency this month, Dirk Koetter explained today.

When Joe writes “big-game,” in this case it refers to cash. Those guys got paid in free agency more than running backs have in recent offseasons — and that sticker shock appeared to get the Bucs out of the bidding, Koetter said at the NFL coaches breakfast this morning.

“This year, all of sudden, running backs got valued. The free-agent running backs that came out this year, all of a sudden there was a big market,” Koetter said. “And the price, you know, we were in on at least one and the price just skyrocketed and, you know, we have a lot of other guys that we want to sign and Jason [Licht] and Mike Greenberg have to balance that all out. The good news is, and it’s well publicized; I think it’s a very strong running back class in the draft.”

Right now, it’s Peyton Barber and Jacquizz Rodgers at running back for the Bucs. So it’s a very safe bet they’ll be snatching one in next month’s draft, though Koetter reminded Joe that Rodgers was Koetter’s third-down back in Atlanta and can step into the Charles Sims role comfortably.

Without a third-round pick, it will be very interesting to see what kind of priority the Bucs place on the position in the draft. If they don’t get one of their top targets this year, perhaps unemployed Sims will return.

Barber, Rodgers and (4th round pick) makes me sad

  2. Skoorb43 Says:

    SONY !!!!

  3. tmaxcon Says:

PENNY and eradicate cancer93 that will give bucs hope.

  4. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

What’s funny is, the guy he’s talking about is Jerrick Mckinnon who wasn’t even close to being the best available guy. Carlos Hyde and Isiah Crowell are far better and signed for relatively cheap. No surprise that we weren’t interested in those guys.

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

Who ever the get better be able to pass block for Dirk or they won’t see the field.

  6. Capt.Tim Says:

    Bucs going cheap again!!
    Smh
Still have money for a RB, plus either CB or safety.

This cheap crap makes me sick.

  7. jerseybuc Says:

Pretty sure it was Mckinnon they were in on. Good that they didn’t overpay, but it is almost assured that either the 2 or 4 will be a RB. So many needs at least one of them gets ignored. SS, RB, CB, G, with 3 picks in the first 4 rounds. And if somehow Chubb falls to 7 we may be two positions of need down. But what a D line that would be!

  8. unbelievable Says:

Hey guys- maxipad has this really novel idea, that’s he’s never written about before involving moving a certain player off our roster.

We should really listen to him, it’s very intriguing.

  9. Jeffbuc Says:

Tmax just stop with the cancer93 we get it we all get it. You don’t like him we all know that now you let us know in every post. How about contributing to the topic at hand instead of we sign Vinny Curry he will suck cause cancer93. We sign jpp he will suck cause of cancer93. We need to draft corners nope they will all suck cause of cancer93. Bucs looking at Benny Cunningham he will suck cause he will go up against career loser cancer 93. What up with Jameis Winston case doesn’t matter he will suck cause of cancer93. That’s what you say in every article enough already it’s not funny it was never funny. It’s borderline psychotic how obsessed you are with him. For real you might need to chill out and watch the lightning for a while or something.

  10. webster Says:

I love how buc fans can say without hesitation who the bucs were targeting in free agency etc. Are you in the office at one buc? You are really getting upset because you “think” they targeted mckinnon and not who you wanted? Gtfoh. Did you see them targeting jpp? No and you have absolutely no idea which running back they were targeting. But as usual buc fan just want to complain so bad that they make up stories and present them as fact. Unbelievable

  11. tmaxcon Says:

    Jeffbuc

every topic goes back to the main reason the bucs will never win a meaningful game and that is cancer93 which makes her relvant to every bucs discussion until the main issues resolved every other move, transaction or discussion is pure and utter nonsense.

  12. Jeffbuc Says:

    Tmax
@jeffbuc what’s wrong the truth hurts. The sooner you bucs fans realize that we will never be great with the cancer the better off you will be.

There I replied for you to cause that’s your same response to everyone when they say something about.

  13. First Down Tampa Bay Says:

How will our opponent’s defense sleep the night before the game knowing they have to face THAT duo?

  14. Jeffbuc Says:

Yeah tmax your a moron the rest of the nfl who says that’s the one person they gameplan on our defense are all wrong. He sucks they just all say those things to make him feel better they don’t mean a word of it. How many games has suh won. How many games did Sapp win in Oakland. A defensive tackle isn’t going to win games on his own. Are team has huge holes and Mccoy is the last of a normal sane bucs fans worries. I bet he snubbed you at Comic-Con and didn’t autograph your Batman McCoy bobble head and that’s why you hate him. Only logical explanation.

  15. Jeffbuc Says:

But back to the article since the troll did what he is trying to do get people to respond to him by saying stuff he knows will start a debate. Come to think of it tmax might be the big dawg. But I’m glad we didn’t overpay for a runningback kind of shows me there just not going all in on one year just to win games to save there job despite what it does to the future of this team. We can find a later round back that will be comparable to what was out there this year. I say we draft two. And bring in as many unstaffed runninbacks as we can and run the hell out of them in the preseason and find out what we have.

  16. Oneilbucs Says:

Sonny is 24 years old no he’s good penny all day or lsu running back forgot his name.

  17. JimmyJack Says:

It seems like a given they are drafting a RB round 2.

But I still believe Barkley will fall after 4QBs go 1-2-3-4. If not Round 2 sounds like a nice plan B. Man I hope they hit. Barber being our feature back doesn’t excite me.

  18. Chris in WA Says:

The Giants 4th rounder was second in the 4th round so it won’t cost much to move up from the 4th to the 3rd. Throw in a 6th (or lower) and the fourth to get a respectable back high in the third. For those who fret about losing out on lower draft picks, remember after every training camp tons of guys around the leauge are cut and picked up by other teams plus we have our practice squad guys from last year.

  19. AlteredEgo Says:

Grice will be GONE….hope Chubb is there in the 2nd….

  20. Pick6 Says:

Jerrick McKinnon got Doug Martin money from the niners. if that was they guy they missed on, good for them. losing carlos hyde to the browns is a gut punch if that’s the guy the bucs targeted.

if i had to guess they probably liked mckinnon and lewis better than hyde because koetter likes RBs he can use extensively in the passing game.

  21. Kobe Faker Says:

Klueless has to stop his ridiculous predictable running back rotation

the “Runner” RB is in 1st and 2nd down and the “Pass catcher” RB on 3rd down….

ITS TOO DAMN EASY FOR THE DEFENSIVE COORDINATORS

Tampas Offense and Jameis Game will be soo much better with a 3 down back that can be a threat to run and catch at any down

  22. Juggernautical Says:

If the Browns wanted to trade, I would trade pick 7, and pick 38 for pick 4 (with the Browns) and maybe some 5th-6th round additions to make the trade workable and go aggressively get S. Barkley. If he’s half the hype, he’ll make Jameis and the offense SOOOO much better. I think JPP makes the whole defense better and I think Barkley would make the offense better. Much more than a Nelson, Fitzpatrick, James, or Ward.

Time to go big game hunting. Barkley = Wins

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Prediction: Bucs will draft TWO RBs this year (hey, we’ve only got Barber & Rodgers now). We’ll use our 2nd Rnd pick (unless Barkley is there in Rnd 1) PLUS a Rnd 5 or 6 pick. Could end up with any one of several RBs in Rnd 2, but I’m really hoping the Bucs snare Bo Scarborough in the 5th Rnd … IF he lasts that long. We still need a bull.

  24. mike10 Says:

I think it’s pretty clear from everything that was swirling through the rumor mill that the pick was McKinnon.

My favorite move made in free agency was one we DIDNT make, and that was signing McKinnon to a 7.5 mil/yr deal!

    F that!

  25. NFLNut Says:

#7 Saquon … or if we trade with the Bills and get that #22 pick, Derrius Guice … otherwise we’ll need to use our 2nd rounder on either Sony, Jones or Chubb imho.

  26. Mark Says:

    Pay McCoy more money!!!!!

  27. Teacherman777 Says:

Trading back means getting our 3rd rounder back!

Trading back could even get us a 2nd rounder and a 3rd rounder!

Or trade back TWICE and get an additional 2nd and 3rd and maybe a 5th rounder.

We have too many needs to only have 2 picks in the first 3 rounds.

We need 5 picks in the first 3 rounds!

    Safety, RB, CB, OG, OT
