Fired Up Over Turnovers

Gets fired up on camera

Joe loves winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter because he is a straight-shooter. Ask a question and you get an answer. You may not like the answer but you will know where Koetter stands.

Even with Koetter being a no-nonsense guy on a lectern or in front of a camera, Koetter doesn’t usually get fired up. But he sure did yesterday when the chatter turned to the five turnovers the Bucs defense forced Sunday at Miami.

Specifically, during his weekly sitdown with WFLA-TV Channel 8 sports anchor Dan Lucas. Koetter lauded Ryan Smith, Kwon Alexander, Chris Conte and Brent Grimes for their hustle and their intelligent play.

“[Takeaways] come in bunches, I can’t explain it,” Koetter said. “It’s a confidence thing. One guy gets it and other guys see it on tape. That [fourth quarter] hit, tackle and fumble recovery by Ryan Smith, to see a corner to make that big of a hit and to get that ball that quick.

Interception by “Kwon was a beautiful play… [interception by] Justin Evans, that was a beautiful play.”

The defense did not play good Sunday. Yes, on the road. Again. But when it came to making plays, the Bucs shined. The five takeaways and the critical fourth down stop in the fourth quarter were the reasons the Bucs won, not because the defense was remotely playing consistently well.

It was sort of like a throwback to Lovie Smith. The defense was a sieve unless it got takeaways.

  1. Defense Rules Says:

Joe, you said that the “defense did not play good Sunday” but I think they did … for one-half. Score was 20-7 at the half & Bucs had created 4 turnovers. That’s pretty good defense IMO. They were creating excellent pressure, largely through blitzes I admit, the secondary coverage looked to be quite good, and Bucs were shutting down the run pretty effectively. Then a different Dolphins team AND Bucs team came out in the 3rd qtr. Fins replaced Cutler with Moore, but more importantly made some excellent adjustments to their game plan. Bucs went turtle … Instead of keeping the pedal to the metal, they started playing much more conservatively on offense AND defense. And it almost cost us the game. That’s on the coaches, not on the players.

  2. Ryan G Says:

The only reason the bucs defense played well is b/c jay cutler started, if moore started that game we lose for sure! Also i dont get this “winning head coach Koetter” thing, isnt he .500 now?? maybe my math is wrong

Why won’t you ask him about using Doug Martin almost exclusively? 2 yards per, no 100 yard games in recent history.. Why won’t you ask him if DM is really the best option we got? Or when will be the point where he says enough is enough because it’s probably ain’t going to get any better? It’s either him or the GM. Let him say that.

  4. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

Pubichead coach Dirk Koetter gives you a straight answer, that is if he’s not walking away from the podium in a hissyfit. A**holes are anything but refreshing.

  5. German Buc Says:

    DR nailed it!
Again we were afraid of losing not hungry for winning.

Unless this issue is solved we will stay mediocre!

  6. Bucsfanman Says:

Matt Moore (seriously?) carved them up in the 2nd half. If not for penalties, I think the outcome would’ve been different.
Even with GMC balling out, our pass-rush was pedestrian and our DBs are way over-matched and inexperienced outside of Grimes.
That Evans INT was a thing of beauty!
Does anyone still have any questions about why Denver let TJ Ward go?!

  7. Jim Says:

Again, Bucs fans are not happy unless every game is 54-0.

  8. Grt2 Says:

Jim I’m extremely happy even though I had high expectations for this season. But I’m a realist we are not a good football ball team. We cannot run the ball or rush the passer and that to me is the GMs fault. But REAL FAN looks at it from all angles. This year I see 4 rookies that are helping this team now. 4 rookies that are going to help turn this thing around. Howard is an NFL STUD, Evans has Ed Reed ability, Beckwith is Stud and Godwin when he polishes his route running is a legit NFL Wr. Although I’m upset at Licht I have to give him credit for these 4 guys. The future looks good Buc fans.

  9. Chucklehead Says:

    54-0????

Dream on. Have we ever scored over 50 in a game?

Tell ya what, Ill be happy when we secure and early lead and then play like we are aiming to extend it instead of just preserve it.

This is becoming Coach Ks m.o. Im seeing a pattern of spineless play calling even when we have a marginal lead

  10. Waterboy Says:

I’m really starting to like Ryan Smith. He’s far from perfect but he’s starting to show me a little something. I may have also been too quick to call Evans a bust because he couldn’t crack the starting lineup in camp. Next week will be a tough test for them.

You know how it is with the Bucs and backup QB’s. I’ll take the win but…….

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Yes the turnovers were great…..and very good to have a couple from young developing players.

I agree that Ryan Smith is starting to show some promise and Justin Evans is too good of an athlete not to become a star. He is already better than Ward.

  13. buddy Says:

How is he exactly is he considered a “winning” coach JOE???? Remind me again….

    ———————————
Not sure, and I’ve been a diehard fan since 1979. This offense is good enough to do it, but their coach has to call it. Hopefully, that will happen Sunday in Hotlanta. Go Mighty Bucs!!

  15. 813bucboi Says:

    defense played well?…..BS…

we don’t play josh mccown and jay cutler the rest of the year…..GO BUCS!!!

  16. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Dang “HowtoSpell” who peeed in your Wheaties this morning.

So you disagree with a coach…his strategy…his record..his personal style….whatever..and that makes him a pubichead and Aaaahole? Really? This is where our nation is today?

Disagree with someone professionally and unleash a torrent of obnoxious ad hominem?

Yesterday somebody used a racist slur for Elizabeth Warren first used by Scott Brown…when I said it was inappropriate he responded by calling her a c&nt.
Really? Disagree with someone politically and you use one of the most hated slurs for women possible?

Dang guys could we not elevate our conversation a bit? Our country is sinking beneath this manure. People you disagree with politically…sports…whatever are not deserving of all of this horrible disgusting name calling!!!!

They deserve your disagreement. Slam their strategies…their draft decisions whatever but calling somebody names like a c%nt or a pubichead or aaahole says far more about YOU than that person!!!

    Just sayin’.

  17. Joe Says:

Why won’t you ask him about using Doug Martin almost exclusively?

There will be a Martin post referring to Dirk Koetter’s remarks Monday soon.

  18. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I was hoping that Anne Sabo did the interview. She is much easier on the eyes then Dan Lucas.
Koetter is a straight shooter, like most people from Idaho.

  19. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Chris

Grew up in Greater Cincinnati and so I was a big Chris Sabo fan. Hard to imagine ole Spuds McKenzie could have fathered a daughter as hot as Annie!!!!

Agree she is the bomb…and she also is a good reporter. Great to see that she’s not just trying to get by on her looks.

  20. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

    @ StPete

Dirk is an a**hole to the media, I don’t think he’d dispute that nor have grounds to dispute the claim. I’m not a fan of hotheaded coaches that haven’t earned the right to act holier than thou. Lovie had the same pompous act as a loser, it didn’t fly with me either.

Pubichead is lowbrowing it, I agree. What that says about me? Guess I don’t care. Though comparing me to other posters using sexist or racist terminology is flat out unkind of YOU.

  21. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Howtospell

Dirk is an a**hole to the media, I don’t think he’d dispute that nor have grounds to dispute the claim.

That is your opinion! I suspect he would dispute…but Joe is part of the media and he LOVES DK’s style and honesty.

I do take your point however that I shouldn’t have compared “lowbrow” comments to somebody who calls a woman the c word simply because he disagrees with her politics. Apologies for that harsh comparison.

  22. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

    StPete

Thanks, but none taken really. I’m not one to be politically correct. I take little offense to words personally.

I understand your point about “obnoxious ad hominem“, especially coming from our current leadership in America. There’s a time and place for proper decorum, but JBF isn’t a place I’d find it necessary to bite the lip. Joe will cut us off if we’ve crossed his threshold of indecency.

  23. denjoe Says:

There’s been some serious DK a$$ kissing, since he went off on Ira.
He really didn’t go off on Ira. Go back and watch the video. Annoyed for a moment is about as far as that goes. –Joe
