Bucs Fail The Eyeball Test

August 19th, 2017

Ignored

The TV ratings from Thursday night’s nationally televised Bucs-Jaguars game are in.

And they’re ugly.

How ugly? Mike Florio, the creator, curator and overall guru at ProFootballTalk.com provided the perspective.

The 1.6 national rating on ESPN, per data grabbed by Greg Auman of TampaBay.com, was the worst for a preseason contest since 2005.

That’s roughly 25 percent of what the Pro Bowl pulls. A good Major League Soccer match-up grabs a 1.2 rating nationally.

How could America turn its nose on America’s Quarterback? And the Bucs were showcased prior on Hard Knocks?

As Florio notes, the massive loss of ESPN subscribers might have a lot to do with the bad ratings. And then there’s the Jags involvement, which is sure to kill appeal.

Joe’s not concerned about interest in the Bucs. It’s stronger than it’s been in years. And the Bucs-Cowboys Sunday Night Football game was a huge ratings hit in December on NBC.

    Its Preseason

  2. HFXBUX Says:

Hmm so maybe Tom Jones is right?

  3. Easy Denman Says:

    I blame the Jags

As Allen Iverson once said, “We’re talking about practice!” Other than when it’s their favorite team playing, there’s little reason to turn on a preseason game. What would be interesting would be to compare the Bucs preseason ratings to start the 2003 season after winning their only SB to this year, since that was most likely when the Bucs national interest was at it’s peak.

BTW, Calling Jameis “America’s Quarterback” doesn’t make it so Joe, that title has to be earned, not anointed. I get that you Joe’s are big fans of JW and SO AM I, I absolutely believe JW will someday be that guy, but he’s not there yet.

Calling him that compares with still calling the “Cowboys America’s Team” when they haven’t won a SB in 21 years. They and the Raiders (33 yrs.) at least have a strong national fan base. Even still, neither should be considered America’s anything.

The only ratings info I’ve seen on Hard Knocks said the ratings up were 38% over last year.

I think you have a few problems with this ESPN game… One, ESPN is Monday Night Football, and it was on Thursday night. Second, it’s NFL preseason. Third, it’s Jacksonville versus Tampa, which is an all Florida game between two teams who are not rivals. Fourth, no one, literally not a single person, cares about Jacksonville. Firth, the game was in Jacksonville and even through the TV people can smell the place.

The Bucs are not yet a ratings draw on their own and they won’t be until they start winning. If you’re a Hard Knocks fan and actually interested in the season then you’ll just see what happened in this game on Hard Knocks and spend your Thursday summer evening doing something productive like making macaroni art.

It’s the jaguars and it’s practice . I am living in NE and their fans didn’t even know they played the jags last week . Opening day in the NFL is all that matters anymore . Nobody cares about preseason we wanna start opening day earlier and make these preseason games real. I also do not think it’s fair the best teams in the league are in the same division . Meanwhile you got Houston and the jags on the same division it’s just silly . NE has the bills , and jets like seriously smh.

    Who cares?!?!?

We don’t need fame!!! We just want the Lombardi!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

    Its all about winning

We are not a playoff team and grouped together as wannabees

Nationally, people, corporate and sports writers do not jameis

Sports writers wanted to teach jameis a lesson and stole his rookie of the year award and gave it to a 1100 yard rusher

Espn and corporate spent millions/air time to promote heisman house. Jameis was stone cold left out! A qb, recent heisman winner and great personality but left out

I believe there was a poll and jameis winston was voted 2nd behind kaep for most dislike

It’s preseason, and I imagine most of the football watching public will believe it when they see it, and preseason is a lousy gauge of just how good……or bad a team really is. No big deal. Now if this is the case when we get to the playoffs……THAT is a different story.

  10. SB Says:

    Honestly, who gives a fock?

  11. SB Says:

Pretty sure the rest of the world is as tired or more than the Bucs fanbase of buying in on the hype!

  12. SB Says:

LOL………Kobe, most other fans want you to Leave. I want you to stay because every fanbase needs that one d!ckhead that they can Rub sh!t in their face when you are proved wrong. I tried to get rid of you last yr with a bet but you are a coward and a welcher. Be that as it may I am glad your dumbas$ is here.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Respect is earned not given. Bucs earned Divisional respect last season. Now they gotta go out and let the league know they are serious. Anything less than 10-6 is a failure. Jags on the other hand do not even rate. Its why I’m very disappointed we only scored 12 pts against them.

  15. Mort Says:

    Who cares.

  16. gilhealy Says:

Kobe is exactly right. Although the fans got it right with the Pepsi Rookie of Year for Jaboo, in a run away, the sportswriters couldn’t eat crow and give #3 is due. ESPN’s vindictive, consistent defaming of Jameis left a lot of the country anti anything to do with Winston. Ironically, it’s the unquenchable desire by BSPN to paint Jameis in the worst possible light, that’s gonna bite them in the butt. Had they been patient, professional and fair in their reporting, the games ratings would’ve been just fine. You reap what you sow. They’re chumps, and they’re rating across the board are proof.

    Don’t get me started..

  17. Kobe Faker Says:

“SB, Ill take that as a compliment…I think”

    Kobe Faker

  18. Piratic Says:

    Kobe Faker=Oath Breaker

  19. USFBUC Says:

Meh, it’s preseason. I have never watched a preseason game ever. On top of that it was us versus the Jags and there was a lot of other stuff catching people’s attention outside of football.

  20. Steve from Oregon Says:

    CalBucsFan…you nailed it

  21. SOEbuc Says:

Hmm. Jags in preseason on a Thursday night. Let me know the ratings after Thursday and Monday night in the regular season this year.

  22. James Walker Says:

This is probably not something that people want to talk about…but the Bucs “Hard Knocks'” shows are so unpopular that previous seasons are being uploaded to torrent sites and the this season is not. They are so unpopular that the season 2 episode of last year has new downloaders and seeders while this years season of Hard Knocks is ignored.

  23. Joe Says:

This is probably not something that people want to talk about…but the Bucs “Hard Knocks’” shows are so unpopular that previous seasons are being uploaded to torrent sites and the this season is not.

Well, this year’s “Hard Knocks” is up in the ratings 32 percent from last year’s featuring the Los Angeles Rams.

  24. Dreambig Says:

Calbucsfan didn’t nail it at all. If you frequent these here JBF pages, Jameis is America’s QB. Has been since we drafted him and its staying that way! Joe ain’t about to change it nor do we want him to. Time to jump on board or go eat sour worms with Tom Jones (official Buc hater and duche bag)

  25. BuccaneerByBirth Says:

    It’s preseason, Joe.

  26. darin Says:

Alot of teams arent playing their starters more than one drive. I dont even watch the games after the starters are pulled, unless its the bucs. We gota do away with 2 preseason games soon pleeeeease roger.

  27. DBS Says:

Yes. Please do away with it and bring the starters out preseason ready for the first real game where they can’t even score. Or see what they still really need to work on.

  28. orlbucfan Says:

Who cares? Only hardcore Bucs and Jags fans cos it’s preseason.
