“I’m Ready To Get A Beer”

April 27th, 2017

Earned a drink.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht is known for being fond of a cold craft beer on occasion. And he likely will sample one or two after he gets home in the wee hours of Friday morning.

“I’m ready for a beer,” Licht said wearing a wide smile on his face as he stepped to the podium at One Buc Palace to discuss his first round pick, tight end O.J. Howard from Alabama.

Licht admitted he never brought Howard in for an interview to One Buc Palace, among the NFL-permitted 30 interviews allowed per team.

Smokescreen? No, said Licht. His staff had done so much research on Howard they knew he had a clean background and there was nothing to discuss.

Besides, Licht noted, any questions about his play could be answered watching tape.

“It was a little bit of a pipe dream during the process he would get there [at No. 19],” Licht said. “It was getting itchy.

“He was one of the top character kids on the board, if not the top.”

Licht admitted he was fielding calls from teams to trade up as Howard dropped and dropped and dropped. But Licht stayed patient and the patience paid off for Licht, winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter, and the Bucs.

  3. NJBucsFan Says:

Mixon’s comp on NFL.com is Leveon Bell. I’d take that all day

  4. Billy Buc N Brazil Says:

Now trade a 3rd and move up for Cook!!!

  6. MadMax Says:

I need sleep after about 4 beers…..have to get up for work at 4:30am….but if I was off, heck yeah, I’d be doing shots with those beers 😀

GJ Mr. Licht! And a BIG HUGE THANK YOU to the teams who passed on Howard!!!

  7. Joe Says:

    Godwin next?

    Hope so.

  8. Pickgrin Says:

Billy Buc – Our 3rd round pick is exact value to move from 50 to 33. Our 4th rd pick gets us up to 43 or 44. Just putting it out there…

  9. FireDaCannons Says:

Godwin would be an amazing snag for our second. I really doubt he will be there.

But Jeez, Howard, Godwin, and “insert RB here” in the third? Couldn’t have planned things to fall better for the Bucs if that actually worked out. Maybe we can dream and they can package their 4th and a late round pick to get a safety that unexpectedly slid. Or someone to groom to replace Dotson in the future.

But man, Howard is a great 2fer – instant upgrade to both our running AND passing games

  10. firethecannons Says:

Great to hear about his character after our experience with ASJackwagon

Man–awesome!!!!!!! jus hopin he would not get picked by Titans

    Falcons got a handful!!!!!

lets get Dalvin tomorrow–figure it out after a few beers!

    GOOD JOB JASON LICHT!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. ElioT Says:

We’ve seen what Jameis can do with guys like Nick O’Leary, Mr. “Huge sh*t”, Jenkins and Brate…

Can’t wait to see Jameis slinging it to freak like Howard.

Gotta add even more weapons (WR, RB) though, injuries are bound to happen and they’ve got to be prepared.

    Go Bucs!

  12. Bird Says:

Licht played poker and Dream player fell to him. There are mixed reactions on this pick cause of all the Nole fans wanting cook. Get a grip people. Guys like this don’t come around to often. Some are saying he is best tight end prospect in last decade. And yes. That means bigger than “gronk”. Todd mcshay said he may be steal of this years draft. He had him ranked 6th or 7th overall or something crazy like that

Plus. Bucs can still trade down and maybe get Cook. All though packers 1st pick of second round and running back is their biggest need

  13. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Hey Joe since your out and about.

Care to defend your many straw-man arguments made against picking this stud?

And your comments proclaiming that Tight end was absolutely not a need?

Don’t feel obligated to reply. I’m just curious. 😀

  14. NJBucsFan Says:

    @Blake

    Hahahahaha

  15. passthebuc Says:

i see us picking up a running back in the 4th rd.

  16. Gambelero Says:

I think it helped that cook was available also. Otherwise, Licht may have panicked and moved up to get Howard.

  17. Pa Privateer Says:

I think Godwin will be there for our 2nd.

There is still a lot of talent left on the board.

I could live with just about any scenario of players/positions for tomorrow. I am very relaxed tonight.

  18. Steven007 Says:

^I hear you Pa. We took care of business tonight. Relax and do it all again tomorrow and Saturday. Great beginning.

  19. SoCalBucFan Says:

Godwin or DE/LB from Kansas in 2nd or Safety Baker if he keeps falling

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Mixon is garbage, I don’t see any way the Bucs would deal with him. It’s amazing to me that people want to chase off Martin, who everyone says is a great guy, for doing adderall – yet you dopes want to select a guy who punches a woman as hard as he can in the face and then makes up excuses on why he did it, ranging from she called him a naughty word (the gay f word I guess) to it was self defense because she slapped him on his neck. I don’t know what happened to cause the incident, and neither do you, but I do know he gets slapped by a 100lb girl on the side of the neck, something that would be less harsh than you swatting a mosquito on your neck, and he responded by punching the chick as hard as he could in her face fracturing multiple bones. The guy is a low IQ dope who has zero self control. I really don’t have an issue with players with character concerns or if it’s some nonsense like with Winston as in the more you read the more fake the story is. There’s nothing fake about Mixon, he’s a dope. Sure he might be a good football player, but when someone of that mindset and with such low intelligence, when they win the lottery rarely does anything good come out of it.

  21. NFLNut Says:

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I stumped for O.J. right from the start and explained that Jameis loves 2-TE sets and that OJ Howard would be the best possible pick as he is a true 3-down TE that never needs to come of the field … however I didn’t actually think he would still be on the board at #19 as the chatter was he could go high as #4 or at the lowest #10.

OJ is the type of player that could be with Jameis for the next 10+ years, have a HOF career and be one of the best TE’s to ever play the game!

    I AM STOKED!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, I will say that if we get Cook or JOE MIXON, we could have the scariest, most talented, most dynamic and flat-out BEST group of 5 skill players in the entire NFL.

Mike Evans and D-Jax on the outside with OJ and Brate on the line and either Cook or Mixon in the backfield … NO DEFENSE COULD MATCH UP WITH THAT … that would be sick!!!!!

  23. RawBucFan Says:

Patience, patience, patience!!!! In the 2nd Rd we should address the secondary. S Budda Baker or CB Chidobe Awuzie will fall in our lap. 3rd Rd RB D’onta Foreman will be there. Rds 4-6 address DE/WR/Secondary/DT with BPA in each round. All of the boxes have been checked!!!!

  24. Guzzie Says:

You know even if Howard has something like 40 catches and 500 yards with 4 TDs, his contributions as a run blocker, and threat in the passing game make this an A+ addition, there is zero pressure on him to come in and be a savior type player, unlike that kicker we drafted

  25. Capt.Tim Says:

Licht said OJ had “Clean Background”, and was “High character”

Not looking good for Joe Mixon, or Caleb Brantley crowds.
    And I’m fine with that!!

  26. Lunchbox Says:

Godwin might be there, and I’d be happy with the pick, but I doubt we’ll go there. With Howard, you’ve got a WR in a TE body. They still need RB. DE, S could be the pick if need meets value. If he makes it to us, Mixon is my pick. If not, DE Jordan Willis.

  27. cmurda Says:

If Dalvin falls to us in the 2nd rd, we could easily be a top 5 offense. Even Mixon or Kamara. I’m still hoping to land Cook somewhere in this draft. I think Cook goes early in the 2nd and I’m not expecting Licht to move up so I’m down on our chances. Could happen though.

  28. Eric Says:

I seriously doubt we draft a rb in the second. We’ll probably go Safety which is smart in baker or obi and go rb in round 3.

I’m down for mack or perrine(?).
