Greg Schiano Wouldn’t Listen To Players

Darrelle Revis dishes on Greg Schiano.

Darrelle Revis dishes on Greg Schiano.

If one is going to fly damn near half-way around the globe, he better get a sitdown and a good story and it appears Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times did just that. Amid the tranquil conditions of Hawaii, Stroud had a fascinating chat with Bucs stud cornerback Darrelle Revis who spilled the beans on the New Schiano Order. [read more]

Browns Interview Greg Schiano For Head Coach

January 22nd, 2014
"I'll come for you, my son."

“I’ll come for you, my son.”

It seems one of the great messes of the NFL, the Cleveland Browns, might want Greg Schiano to remove them from laughingstock status.

Per Joe’s pal Alex Marvez of FOX Sports and SiriusXM NFL Radio, the former leader of the New Schiano order interviewed for the Browns’ vacant head coaching gig today. [read more]

Aaron Murray And The Bucs

Who Is Jason Licht?

January 22nd, 2014
jason licht 0121

Jason Licht once played linebacker under Tom Osborne at Nebraska.

Yes, the Bucs hired Cardinals vice president of player personnel Jason Licht as their new general manager yesterday, but just who is Licht?

Well, if you believe winning rubs off on people, then Licht might be your guy. He was part of the football operations of three different franchises that reached the Super Bowl while he was under their employ, noted Buccaneers.com multimedia guru Scott Smith. [read more]

Finding “Speed In Space”

January 22nd, 2014

Perhaps the Bucs would eye Jalen Saunders on Day 3 of the NFL draft?

During the little time new Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford has spent speaking publicly, he’s repeated his desire to get the football in positions where the Bucs can use “speed in space.” [read more]

Ryan Mallett?

January 22nd, 2014

The new Bucs GM was with New England when they drafted Mallett in 2011

As a former right hand to Bill Belicheat, new Bucs general manager Jason Licht surely knows what it would take to pry quarterback Ryan Mallett from the Patriots.

Mallett is entering his fourth season, a contract year for the 25-year-old QB. And the 2011 third-round pick probably wants a shot at a starting job. [read more]

Brooks Irked Over David Snub

January 22nd, 2014

No pineapple for Lavonte (yet).

Joe doesn’t give a damn about the Pro Bowl but he will fight for the right for the NFL to televise it.

Many NFL fans want it banished, but that makes no sense. The game makes cash for the NFL and no fan short of a poor soul in a Bolivian prison has a gun pointed to his head forcing him to watch the game. So why lose sleep that it is on TV? Only an invalid or Tony Kornheiser can’t work a remote.

But Joe does get a few daily Twitters from Bucs fans stomping their feet over Lavonte David not playing in the game, nevermind he has already been selected as an All-Pro, which holds more weight in football circles.

Looming Lovie-Licht Power Struggle Is Good

January 21st, 2014

So what should a general manager do if he wants a player and his head coach does not?

It’s a great question, and one former rockstar general manager Mark Dominik dealt with a handful of times with the leader of the New Schiano Order. [read more]

Lovie Met Licht In Chicago

January 21st, 2014
Licht

The new GM was a trusted Bill Belichick man

New Bucs general manager Jason Licht met with Lovie Smith in Chicago two years ago, when Licht was interviewing for the Bears GM gig he didn’t get.

BSPNChicago columnist Jon Greenberg penned a story that essentially begged the Bears to hired the Bucs’ new personnel czar. [read more]

Jay Glazer: Bucs Have New GM

New Bucs general manager?

Joe was beginning to feel angst over the clock continuing to click and no one filling the seat of former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik. Well, it appears that wait is over.

Per uber NFL insider Jay Glazer (if he has ever been wrong about something, please let Joe know) of Fox Sports, the Bucs have decided to hire Jason Licht as their next general manager. [read more]

Too Much Made Of Derek Carr-Jeff Tedford Bond

January 21st, 2014

It’s not like new Bucs offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford is the Tampa Bay head coach and Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr played for him in college.

If that were the case, then Joe might join his media brethren in thinking Carr could be the next Bucs franchise quarterback. [read more]

Are Bucs In Line For An Extra Draft Pick?

January 21st, 2014

Roy Miller’s 14 starts in Jacksonville could help the Bucs

The NFL has a mysterious system that sometimes awards teams a “compensatory” pick or picks in the NFL Draft.

A franchise can earn one of these by losing free agents that were more valuable than ones it acquired during a given offseason window. [read more]

A Reunion?

January 21st, 2014
Could Michael Bennett return to Tampa Bay?

Could Michael Bennett return to Tampa Bay?

Yes, yesterday Joe went off (again) about how angry he is at the Bucs for letting solid defensive end Michael Bennett walk away for no good reason. Adding salt to Joe’s wound is watching Bennett help lead the Seahawks to the Super Bowl.

How angry is Joe about this? Joe wants to throw rocks at joggers down Bayshore Boulevard.

But reading Pat Yasinskas of ESPN is a salve for Joe’s outrage. Yasinskas seems to think the Bucs (whoever the new general manager is) just might make a play to get Bennett back in Tampa Bay.

Barry in Silsbee, Texas wonders if the Bucs might try to bring back defensive end Michael Bennett in free agency.

PY: That’s one I wouldn’t rule out. The Bucs clearly need a pass-rushing defensive end. For reasons I can’t put my finger on, the old coaching staff wasn’t sold on Bennett. But the new regime realizes it needs to improve the pass rush and adding Bennett might be one of the best ways to accomplish that.

Look, Joe knows that Bennett was not and will never be mistaken for Deacon Jones. But, damnit to hell, You. Do. Not. Let. Your. Sacks. Leader. Leave. You don’t!

In retrospect, this decision by then-Bucs commander Greg Schiano was the beginning of the end. Getting Bennett back would be a big step toward getting heat on opposing quarterbacks.

Bucs Could Use An “Untouchable”

January 21st, 2014

A Wyoming standout is drawing rave reviews

What would be more intoxicating than the Bucs having a dangerous speed threat in their passing game, a guy that could break off tight routes in the slot, rack up yards after the catch, and stretch a defense?

Perhaps only a beastly defensive end or retired Buccaneer Rachel Watson could inspire more excitement? [read more]

Vital Stays With Dixie Chicks

January 21st, 2014
team glazer, lovie

“Sorry Lovie, no GM yet.”

The hopes of Bucs fans to land a general manager by the end of the weekend came to a crashing thud late Sunday.

There is still no general manager.

Twitter reports and some sports radio chatter had Dixie Chicks front office man Lionel Vital all but signed, sealed and delivered. [read more]

Richard Sherman Channels Ronde Barber

January 20th, 2014

Ronde had plenty to say after his iconic moment

Joe’s no fan of cocky Richard Sherman, the Seattle cornerback who sealed a Super Bowl appearance for his team late in the NFC Championship game yesterday. But Joe’s really getting a laugh hearing all the sports radio chatter today ripping Sherman for his antics immediately after the game was sealed. [read more]

Michael Bennett is good enough for the NFC champs but wasn't good enough for Greg Schiano.

Michael Bennett is good enough for the NFC champs but wasn’t good enough for Greg Schiano.

Joe knows there will be readers who will tell Joe to knock it off, turn the page and forget about it because it is past history.

But no, Joe cannot forget about it and it gnaws at him daily.

Josh McCown?

January 20th, 2014

He’s back in the mix

It’s a safe bet the Bucs will have young quarterbacks fighting for a starting job next season. Whether that’s Mike Glennon, Johnny Football, Blake Bortles or anyone else, the Bucs would benefit from having an experienced backup with starting experience on the roster.

The Bucs haven’t had one of those since Byron Leftwich developed a mysterious injury in 2009. [read more]
