Are Bucs In Line For An Extra Draft Pick?

January 21st, 2014

Roy Miller’s 14 starts in Jacksonville could help the Bucs

The NFL has a mysterious system that sometimes awards teams a “compensatory” pick or picks in the NFL Draft.

A franchise can earn one of these by losing free agents that were more valuable than ones it acquired during a given offseason window.

The “value” of free agents lost and signed is determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors, but the NFL doesn’t make the rules public. Per ProFootballTalk.com, the league office determines compensatory picks based on net gains and losses in free agency, for transactions occurring from the start of the league year (March) through June 1.

So based on those guidelines, last offseason Bucs free agents E.J. Biggers, Michael Bennett and Roy Miller were lost to other teams prior to June 1. (Dallas Clark wasn’t signed by the Ravens until the summer.)

Bennett had an excellent season in Seattle, Miller started 14 games for Jacksonville, and Biggers started five for Washington.

In free agency, the Bucs signed bust wide receiver Kevin Ogletree, Brian Leonard, Jonathan Casillas and Dashon Goldson prior to June 1.

So did the Bucs lose more value than they gained? Joe wouldn’t want to be on the NFL panel that makes that ugly call.

Compensatory draft picks can range from Round 3 through Rounds 7. If by some miracle the Bucs score an extra pick in the 2014 draft, Joe would be surprised if it’s anything more than a seventh-rounder. It would surely help the cause if Michael Bennett took home Super Bowl MVP honors, though that would make many Bucs fans ill.

A pick would be nice….since I’m sooooooooo ill about Bennett!!

Hash is the process whereby you take what remains from an excellent meal and turn it into something possibly edible at a later date.

Based on what Dashon cost the team and himself in salary, Bucs should easily get a third rounder

If we get one it ill be in round 6 or 7…almost useless except to trade.

Our GM isn’t at the senior bowl…that’s going to hurt us. Although I bet Tedford is. I suspect he will want Carr, since he is a family friend.

Because of his brother, taking Carr makes me nervous. But I admit I know next to nothing about him…other than that he passed for 5,000 yards this year. That makes him a tempting prospect, since few QBs in the nfl have done it.

Can anyone fill me in on why this kid will be better than his brother?

BuccaneerBonzai, from what I’ve seen and read, he’s a more mobile/athletic version of David and seems to be more accurate on the deep ball.

^^ You had me at “accurate”. LOL

Regardless of how many picks we have I’d love it if this was the last year of having high draft picks, I’d take more meaningful games late in the season…whoever this gm is could be a hated man in less than a season if his first draft sucks

Try to trade Adrian Clayborn for hopefully a second round pick, ( more than likely a third with a conditional pick based on play.) while some in the league still think there is still value.

Whoever our GM is will have their work cut out for them in this year’s draft. As of right now, we will not have our 3rd or 6th round pick. We will have 5 picks and the GM will likely have to hit on 3 of the 5 in order for this team to get better. Who knows what can change between then and now regarding free agency and trades, but as of now, our draft situation is not ideal. We blew out loud this year and still ended up way back with the 7th pick overall. Let’s hope the new GM that comes in can (a) draft his a$$ off or (b) wheel and deal in free agency. Ideally, both.

    @The_Buc_Realist

I high doubt they will trade him. If it was a coach from the year before then maybe.

  11. Kevin Says:

I hope Bennett get’s the win with Seattle. He was needed here and let go I’ll be happy to watch him win the SB and us get a better pick.

  12. Lev Says:

bring back Bennet plus Jared Allen and Julius Peppers!!!

  13. Cody Says:

    Lev…

I like the idea of bringing Bennett back and Jered Allen…

We should’ve just kept ol’Roy since Spence is a side-grade at best and used the draft pick on a bigger need.
