Strong Night For Kyle Trask

August 9th, 2025

Take that, Teddy Bridgewater!

Kyle came out against the Titans tonight in the preseason opener and looked smooth and confident, and very appreciative that rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka was on the field, along with Jalen McMillan.

The Bucs scored on their opening drive (field goal) and Trask finished his abbreviated night 12-for-16 for 129 yards.

Todd Bowles liked what he saw.

“Kyle made some good throws early and some timely throws to some receivers down the field, so that was good to see,” Bowles told WFLA-TV at halftime.

Trask also said he was pleased with his performance, though not fully satisfied.

After an up and down training camp, one that saw veteran Teddy Bridgewater signed this week, Trask rose up when the lights came on.

Okay, Trask did not totally meltdown tonight but keep in mind that he put up these numbers against a 3 dash 14 team that wasn’t playing all of their starters so you’d expect Mr Trask to put up decent numbers. Nothing against Trask but everyone can understand why the new OC and others in the Buc brain trust probably encouraged Licht to sign up a QB with some real game experience besides losing to the ATL in a meaningless second half appearance against the Falcons in week 17 2023 which ensured that the Bucs would be one of those rare teams that won a division with a losing record…..

  2. Old Sombrero Says:

Nice to see and think we will have some reliable depth at QB if the situation requires us to have to rely on them. Go Bucs. Fire The Cannons.

  3. FortMyersDave Says:

Correction, the Bucs lost to the ATL week 17 2022, TB 12’s last season.

  4. Jason Says:

With the exception of center, we have depth at darn near every position.

  5. DBS Says:

Trask did what Trask does in preseason games. Move the ball with good passing. But once again no TD passes. Last year he only threw 2. Sanders in Cleveland already has 2. How many will he throw this preseason. And this is against future Amazon, Ups drivers etc.

  6. HC Grover Says:

    Trask looked great! Winner.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

The Baker Boi(s) triggered because Trask had a good night. LOL!

Get over yourself cupcakes, Trask isn’t a threat to Baker, you can just be happy that he looked good – it doesn’t mean Baker is going to get benched if you just admit he played well.

  8. KT Says:

@DBS Trask played the first half against starters if you hadn’t noticed. Some of you nole fans need to give it a rest.

  9. Mobucs Says:

Once again the lesson holds: bringing in competition stimulates improvement.

  10. HC Grover Says:

    Trask has ‘The Brady Look’.

  11. HC Grover Says:

Baker likes shotgun….Did anyone see a shotgun play??? We must be hiding our plays.

  12. firethecannons Says:

Good to see Kyle have a decent game, hope we do not need him and Baker stays healthy

  13. ReeeBarrr Says:

    Good work, Trask

  14. Aqualung Says:

Yes, he played well. I’m happy for him and the Bucs. Still looks like he’s throwing with a shot put motion but, results were good.

  15. Kenton Smith Says:

I like Kyle Trask. I knew he was good when they resigned him. We are a better football team than we were last year. Confidence describes what this year’s team displays. Competition is tightening up the whole team. I am fully aware that this is our first preseason game yet I’m prepared to say we’ll lose a few games this season. But not many. Not many at all. And I ain’t Whistling Dixie!!Super Bowl or Bust!!

  16. LakelandBuc Says:

Kyle Trask never had the opportunity to work with the 1st team

I believe he will be solid with the 1st team

  17. 1sparkybuc Says:

Okay, playing against scrubs, with scrubs. Reasonable to expect decent production against starters while playing with starters. Trask is on our side, guys. He’s not the enemy. Hopefully Mayfield stays healthy all season and we don’t need Trask. Hopefully too, if Mayfield is injured, Trask is a fantastic substitute.

  18. Kysbucs18 Says:

Did I miss a helmet change ? Bucs decal is smaller right?

  19. Trask To The Future Says:

    WE TOLD YOU SO

  20. Capt Ahab Says:

Trask played well, simple as that.

  21. Tbbucs3 Says:

Rod Munch in shambles cause his so called “worst QB in the NFL” is now a top 10 franchise quarterback. LMAO!

  22. BucforLife Says:

Don’t understand some of the negativity against Trask, he looked good tonight also did last year in preseason. We all know Baker is the leader and commander but it’s good to see the backup do well in preseason who could very well come out and win games if called upon. Good to have this Go Bucs

  23. Shane Callahan Says:

Good for him! Keep it up. Might need him if Baker and Teddy get hurt.

  24. Trask To The Future Says:

    Tbbucs3,

Mayfield is no Top 10 QB. There’s a reason they don’t pay him like one.

Let’s see how many games again this season he fails to throw for barely 100 yards in the first half and we fall behind so he can rack up garbage time yards & TDs once again.

  25. MadMax Says:

Trask was very impressive! He and Miller seem to be on the same page. I’ll eat my crow now from my doubts two years ago.

  26. MikeBuc Says:

    @Traskonthebenchforthe future

    “WE TOLD YOU SO”

YOU trask diehards said he was a starter and better than Baker which NO ONE at one buc claims. Honestly you guys create more hate for Trask than Trask ever does himself. He had a good preseason game but get a grip . NOt regular season competition and failed to score a TD.

here hoping he is a good back up but doing a victory “we told you so” based on that just shows how low the bar is even for you guys

  27. BucFanforLife Says:

Oh c’mon you Trask vs Baker mofos lol.. we looked good, we won, it’s preseason.. let’s just all agree we liked what we saw overall.. GO BUCS!!

  28. Erik with Pilot and Driver™ Says:

Trask looks like a good solid Backup QB. Nothing more nothing less.

  29. Jeebs the Honey Bear Says:

After tonight’s game, I think the Bucs have a good backup.

  30. adam from ny Says:

    trask looked good…that was a slight surprise…

everyone raved about parish…but i saw the kid get worked out there tonight……werked…!

    running game looked good…

miller looked like a super reliable option for baker too…he keeps bringing a little more to the table than you’d expect…just like last season…

enough said for a 1st preseason game

  31. MelvinJunior Says:

In my mind all along, was that Trask must have been looking God-AWFUL then, if they really ‘felt the need’ to bring Teddy in to compete for the number-2. It would’ve been mind-blowing to me, seeing TEDDY just walk in there and beating Trask out like that. I thought Bowles’ answer to that postgame interview question about Trask being a much better gameday QB vs a practice-QB, was awfully odd… You could ‘read into it’ in a lot of different ways!? It just did not sound-like, a huge boost of confidence, that’s for sure. I just thought it was awfully weird. Especially, given the fact that he wouldn’t even put him in during ‘garbage-time’ (even when Baker would get a little banged-up… only a handoff and NEVER an actual pass). Bowles said some BS like, “Need To See More Evidence Of That” Lmao. Regardless, I just can’t imagine expecting very much out of Teddy, at ALL. And, I’ve always liked him. Hard to believe he’s still only 32 tho.

  32. heyjude Says:

Trask was like magic and on it. And so many others Ryan Miller, Tucker, … Felt bad about White and his groin early on. But the players really showed up and looked intact. Teddy will be a good back-up for Baker too.

  33. Dan the Bucs Fan Says:

Trask is a very solid backup Qb. It’s a roster spot that every team needs. Good news for him is he will have a long career not take a lot of punishment and maybe after Baker retires he gets a few years as a starter at the end of his career. That would be a nice career for Trask.

  34. Defense Rules Says:

HC Grover … ‘Baker likes shotgun….Did anyone see a shotgun play??? We must be hiding our plays.’

Nope, can’t remember any shotgun plays. Got a hunch HC that the Bucs were just taking it easy on the newbie centers they used. Real easy to screw up the shotgun snap when the QB is 5-10 yards back. I think we might have even had that happen with our 1st team once or twice last year.

  35. Kenton Smith Says:

Defense Rules, man we have had negative takes on our offensive line depth since the start of training camp and so we threw and ran for 200 yards each. Trask played well and we gave up 7 points. I think we are going to be better this year, what are you thinking?

  36. JustOneGame Says:

There was a bad/mistimed snap from Shotgun. I think it resulted in 15 yard loss, other than that I don’t recall seeing many

  37. Scott Says:

He climbed that pocket and hit Egbuka. One of many good throws from him.

  38. Oneilbuc Says:

Bucfanfor. Baker Mayfield is on his 4th team and you Baker fan boys are the only ones who think he’s elite. Baker Mayfield has been good in the regular season against a trash division but can’t win the big games especially prime time games. Kirk Cousins, Alex Smith,Tony Romo is what Baker Mayfield has been with the bucs. Until he can at least get to a conference championship those are the quarterbacks Baker Mayfield is and none of them are elite.

  39. Oneilbuc Says:

And to be honest I think it’s more about the talent the bucs has on offense is the reason why he’s been good during the regular season. Because we saw it with the Panthers that he don’t elevate the players around him they elevate him .

  40. Beeej Says:

I think we brought in Teddy because we HAVE no #3–Pratt has missed EVERYTHING, and there are no prospects for that to change in the near future. Conner= camp meat. If Baker missed a few games we’d have no #2 after Trask

  41. orlbucfan Says:

The Rubes are getting warmed up in terms of complaining. Is this actually a Bucs Fan site? Sometimes, I wonder? Kyle Trask played and sounded sharp last night. He’s been a class act off-field as well as on, and a solid team-first in the locker room. I’m glad he’s our backup cos sometimes Baker gets so feisty, he scares me as in attracting the injury demon.

  42. NLK@boston Says:

go easy traskers. oneilbuc, no way in hell does trask see reg. season time unless baker gets hurt or a blowout. he doesn’t have the “it” factor. like stiff arming bosa. blocking upfield for running backs. running over a linebacker to pick up extra yards. escaping the pocket to extend plays. lowering the shoulder to pick up a 1st down. there’s only a handful of qbs who can and will do that in a game. trask isn’t one of them. baker is a man’s man. plain and simple.

  43. Scott Says:

Don’t get it twisted. Trask makes some monster throws. Not that dink and dunk backup QB stuff.

  44. Shawn Says:

Good job Trask over the corner and safe before safety lites receiver up good ball placement great catch stop hating

  45. Scott Says:

I knew it would be light work for the boys last night. Somehow we were underdogs… fully confident with Baker and Trask as 1 and 2

  46. Kidfloflo Says:

Excited to see what Teddy has left in the tank…if he’s solid, I’ll feel much better about our back up QB situation…I think him and Trask can keep the season going if God forbid needed

  47. JD Still Says:

“An up and down camp” , “Kyle struggled in camp”, “disappointing camp”, these are a few of the anti-Trask propaganda phrases being put out in print and by talking heads, without any validity whatsoever! Interestingly enough , all in the week prior to the Bucs justifying bringing in journeyman QB Teddy Bridgewater , ( played on eight different teams , to go with journeyman QB Baker Mayfield’s four different teams) , when in fact Kyle very rarely threw interceptions or fumbled during the camp, ( while at the same time in the last team practice before the Titans arrived Mayfield threw two interceptions and had three other interceptions dropped, to go with multiple interceptions and fumbles all during camp, and not a word about Mayfield’s “struggling”! Well ,Kyle’s performance during last nights game blew that propaganda line right out of the water! So , remember boys and girls, what Abraham Lincoln said , “ Trust Your own eyes and don’t believe everything you read or hear on the internet because people have agendas!

  48. OrlandoBucFan Says:

I was excited to see Trask have an impressive preseason game. It would be great to see what he can do behind our starting offensive line, but Trask did show patience and good mobility last night. If the need arises this season, I think the Bucs will be good to go at back-up quarterback.

  49. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

They need to tell Balzsack” 😅🤣😂 thank you Rod Munch!” to turn in his play book and that Publix has offered him a job in their frozen meat department after last night’s performance because he looked worse than camp meat! Let Bridgewater be #3 right now. The only good that came out of him playing was it forced Grizzard to showcase Mr. Wright who ran the heck out of the ball. The young man still scored a td after two were called back on penalty. Very impressed! His speed on his actual actual score was crazy. Imagine how many tds Bucky would have if he had that speed.

Trask looked pretty good last night. Definitely proved he deserves to be #2, and that we shouldn’t need to worry if he HAS to play. The only “guys” who say he didn’t play well or divide are the worshippers of Baker. His most impressive passes were 1) completion to Miller between three defenders 2) the almost td toEbooyaka. He looked solid but I kinda cringed listening to him talk.

After watching Grizzard force feed the run game and its outputI can see that we will have a similar offensive output as last year. We were top 5 in offense last year and I see no drop off from that.

DBS SAYS calls them future amazon drivers… since this is the 50TH season, and I’m 60, let me tell you what they USED to call 4th string NFL players…
1970s These guys are future bowling pin straighteners
1980’s These guys are future Cable TV salesmen
1990s These guys are future grocery store baggers
2000’s These guys are future Administrative Assistants
2010s These guys are future Insurance agents
2020’s can you imagine telling someone from 1976 that guy would be an Amazon Driver? “id imagine driving a jeep in the Amazon pays well..if you can avoid the snakes!”

  51. Addb Says:

At some point baker will get himself hurt head butting a linebacker or something, we need Trask to be able to manage a game

  52. Critmark Says:

I don’t really care if Kyle or Teddy is #2 on the depth chart. But there are two things I would like.

    1. The Bucs have the best QB2 in the league.
    2. The Bucs QB2 never sees the field except for garbage time.

Is that too much to ask????

  53. B2B253 Says:

Trask played like he always plays, safe. Not sure he even attempted a downfield pass. He’s an ok option for the regular season but we need someone who will pull the trigger in a big game and take a chance or two. Trask aint it.

  54. Mveal2006 Says:

Kyle trask style of play is always different than what most coaches want and that has hurt him going back to hif
    Hh school.

Lijke doug Williams he doesn’t tgroe three inch passes.

Its a good contraband trait to tge bucs. I love it as a fan.

Im tired of listening about it. He gives plays time, total opposite of today’s style.

Doug Williams won a super bowl but had to ride the bench to get his chance after hugh culverhouse blew up tge tge team over hiving williams a $200,000 deal

    Just curious…

…do you expect Joe to do articles saying the same thing you just said? An article titled:

“Kyle Trask out up good numbers…against a bad team.”

    I can see it now…

  56. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Mveal2006 Says:
“Kyle Trask style of play is always different than what most coaches want…”

That’s because coaches have it in their heads that they want mobile QBs these days…even though pocket passers have won the most rings.

Yes, it is actually. Because a backup cannot become the best QB2 in the league if he doesn’t play. No stats equals no ranking.

  58. Critmark Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai Says: “Yes, it is actually. Because a backup cannot become the best QB2 in the league if he doesn’t play. No stats equals no ranking.”

Yeah BUT…aren’t all QB2s in that same boat? The HC hopes they never get meaningful reps because he doesn’t have to. Someone’s QB2 has to hold that distinction! Just my 2 Cents.

  59. MelvinJunior Says:

“Not sure he even attempted a downfield pass?” Hmmmm… They sure looked “downfield” to me! At least as much or more so than what Baker did last season. I remember A LOT of ‘dink and dunk’ going on last season, while rarely EVER seeing anything over 20-yards downfield. Wth are you talking about, “B2B253”… You mean, that Trask wasn’t out there slingin’ 50-yard+ BOMBS, or what!?

  60. Falconrap Says:

It’s amazing to me how many people still piss all over Trask even after a performance last night. He only had a couple of passes that were off. The one pass to Egbuka down at the goal line was interfered with by the defender, who tied up his other arm and grabbed the top of his helmet. Otherwise, it would have been a TD and a perfect drop in deep ball. Trask may not have that “it” factor, or “moxie” like Baker, but he’s a better intermediate and deep ball thrower. He’s also more mobile than people give him credit for. Not to mention he’s always played better in games than practice. And, no, he was never in danger of losing the QB2 spot to Teddy. Dude is here because Conner sucks and Pratt can’t get healthy. We need another arm and getting a guy who’s played and been at least fairly decent, is why he’s here. Trask is a better QB than Bridgewater. Trask is the number 2 barring something disasterous.

  61. Scott Says:

Trask has one of the highest “grades” so far 7th out of 82 qbs through the first preseason game. With my eye test he played great.. I watched a lot of the games. He may be a top 5 backup. Needs some real game experience but so do a lot of the backups around the league.

  62. What it is Says:

He is no Baker Mayfield that is for sure. Not even close

  63. Bucblind Says:

He runs a 5.1. We better hope the line protects him because he won’t be running anywhere against the first string defenses. His family played on the line. His speed is that of a lineman.

  64. Davyboy🏴‍☠️ Says:

Onei, you ignore reality and are a broken record. Baker has won plenty of “big games”. Same old same old, as if repeating a false statement over and over again makes it true.😉

  65. BillMFl Says:

Trask is not a super star, but neither was Bart Starr. Steady and consistent are important traits for both starters and backups. Baker is exciting to watch but his risky tendencies leave him vulnerable to serious injury. Love Baker’s moxy but glad Trask is there for when Baker gets blasted, which is a very real risk given Bakers style of play. Baker plays with fearless abandon. But the qbs that won the most superbowls were mostly pocket passers with long lasting careers. Baker is very exciting to watch but takes way too many risks for a qb. Is Trask good enough to take us to a Super Bowl? Sure if the Bucs are good enough across the board. Especially if he doesn’t have to be the show boat star of the team. Honestly I love the way Baker plays the game. Just don’t think he can last.

  66. Oneilbuc Says:

Davyboy. No he hasn’t he’s 1-7 and prime time games and only won 2 playoff games. He’s been Kirk Cousins, Tony Romo and Alex Smith good regular seasons but bad playoff performance. Baker Mayfield can’t elevate the players around him .

  67. Oneilbuc Says:

Get to a conference championship game then I will change my mind !!

  68. BucforLife Says:

B2B253…. You clearly didn’t watch the game and don’t sound like you watched the highlights either. He threw a few passes down field and did well when he did. He looked good if you actually watched the highlights either, don’t know why people comment and bash players they don’t even watch smh
