Roughing Baker Mayfield
July 11th, 2025Earlier this spring Bucs quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis mentioned how he’s trying to coerce Baker Mayfield to unload the ball more. Live to fight another down.
Lewis noted how Mayfield, who took 40 sacks last year despite playing behind one of the better offensive lines in the game, is now 30. Lewis said when a quarterback is on the wrong side of 30, those beatings will catch up to him Mayfield sooner than later.
It wasn’t just on sacks when Mayfield gets clobbered. Per Rob Maddi, senior NFL writer for the Associated Press, Mayfield absorbed a lot of late hits last year. For every 100 quarterback hits Mayfield took last year, 3.6 were roughing penalties of some sort. That was seventh-most in the league.
Joe isn’t sure how the Bucs get Mayfield to take less hits. Part of Mayfield’s game is his aggressive, physical nature. Take that away, you may just neuter him he will be less effective.
If the Bucs plan on making a Super Bowl run, they need Mayfield fully effective.

The question really should be, how does Bowles feel about Mayfield going deep? Bowles isn’t Arians and puts way more emphasis on not turning the ball over. Getting turnovers and protecting the football usually doesn’t involve throwing downfield very often.

That’s the thing about long balls, a LOT of possibilities for picks are eliminated when heaving it 50 yards down field for Mike in a 1 on 1

Interesting that in this stat he is between Goff and Mahomes. Two pretty successful QBs.
But there were times when Baker did just need to throw the damn ball. I love his competitive nature but We need him healthy for 17 plus games. Now with his All Pro Tackle out of action…
Go Bucs!

Tua needs to retire. Way too many hits to still be playing football. Retire now and enjoys your millions. CTE will catchup with him later.

Garro, totally agree! The coaches are telling him he takes too many unnecessary hits, and I think he recognizes that. I think we’ll see a lot more check downs this year, but hopefully he doesn’t completely abandon his aggressiveness.

One way to stop the late hits is for our O-Line to punish the offenders.

That stat doesn’t help the argument imo. It almost looks like he should take more risks to keep up based on the top tier names and that success and winning triggers more flagrency from opponents as opposed to just risk taking..
In baker we trust, in jason we trust. And mike and a lot of otger guys now. If they agree on something im fine with it either way

better to run or take a sack than throw a stupid interception

baker was the check down king with canales, white is a great receiver, this offense is versatile except when canales insisted on running up the middle all the time- he’s doing the same thing in carolina

I think we are excited about Egbuka and McMillan and when Godwin is coming back and really hasn’t talked enough about Mike.
Rice gave him his blessing and I think he is gonna have a big year.
He said he wants to get it out of the way early.
I don’t think with our weapons, Baker will have to take those shots this year.
