Joe didn’t take that too seriously, but the message was clear. Don’t get soft!
Fellow linemate Cody Mauch hasn’t been resting. Last week he hosted his ever-growing annual football camp in North Dakota. It’s up to 500 attendees, per reports, and Mauch makes it all free.
Mauch told KVRR-TV that he’s the one walking away sore after getting very hands on. Joe saw the local TV video of Mauch covering a receiver. It wasn’t pretty.
“I think I had the best time,” Mauch said. “Yeah, obviously I play [offensive line,] but I was playing DB against some of the guys. We were doing some 1-on-1s, and like that’s the kind of things that if I see a kid randomly, you know, in public or at the grocery store, they’ll mention, ‘Hey, I beat you in a one-on-one at your camp.’ And those are the things that really stick with them.
“I have a great time doing that. And like I said, I am very sore right now. Like I did one too many 1-on-1s and my back is hurting right now. So I’m feeling it.
It seems Mauch and his sponsors are paying the camp bill in full. It’s free.
“You don’t want any kids to miss out on the opportunity just because there’s a price tag on it,” Mauch said. “To me, doing it for free, it’s cool. It’s a great way for me to give back. And I guess the way I see it, there’s no reason to charge them anything because I’m just happy to be out here doing this.”
Cool stuff from Mauch. Other Bucs have camps scheduled in July, including YaYa Diaby locally.

this is the time of the year where all the coaches and GM’s hold their breaths that guys don’t fall prey to bad conduct before camp is ON. You know like the DB from Detroit that got arrested in Tampa. Do these guys really understand how fortunate they are to be in the situation that they are in and the $$ that they can/or about to make? Joe what is your opinion on most of these guys? Appreciate their situation or are so self-absorbed that they are completely in their own world and are real close to a wake up call? Love to hear feedback.

Ive seen plenty of NFL players show pics of them as kids attending football camps so this is great to see. Hope he stays healthy!

That sounds like a real good way for him to get himself HURT. I remember when I was a kid at Pitino’s Camp… He did the exact same thing back then. He played EVERY camper a game of 1-on-1. And, if you BEAT HIM (which was VERY RARE, believe-it or not), you got a t-shirt saying something like, “I BEAT RICK PITINO at the Rick Pitino Basketball Camp.” Pretty Cool.

These camps really are impactful and leave a lasting impression on these young kids. Kudos to Mauch and any other athlete across any sport that makes time to make a difference in the lives of youths through sports.
Met Wayne Chrebet in ‘99 at an offense-defense camp at Hofstra as a kid. Buddy of mine who played a few years for the Bills used to throw a camp in Buffalo then would come do a camp before reporting back to TC and he’d bring teammates down with him. Anything to get these kids outside and engaged with something positive.

Mauch is our best run blocker and cannot wait to see him on the field this season. Our offense will be cruising with that entire O-line healthy! (Knocks on wood)

So True. Even though, Pitino’s was mostly for rich white kids LoL. It was EXPENSIVE. I was 14 years old that summer at Pitino’s Camp, & I am now 49. I still remember it just like it was yesterday!!!! Pitino wasn’t there for most of it though. It was all of his ‘assistant’ coaches, like Herb Sendek (he was SO brutal, we called him “SenDICK” LoL)… He actually, coached Santa Clara to the NCAA Tournament just this last season. Where he eventually, lost to… You Guessed It! KENTUCKY. He is a HELLUVA COACH and really good recruiter. He also coached Miami (of Ohio) to the NCAA Tourney (recruited Wally Szczerbiak there), as well as, NC-State AND Arizona State (with a guy named James Harden). One of only just a few, who has coached 4 ‘different’ Universities, to the NCAA Tournament. That’s pretty damn STRONG. And, at those type of schools. Outside if maybe, NC-State.

One of my ‘all-time’ favorite camp stories, is about Ladainian Tomlinson’s mother working 3 extra jobs JUST to buy him some new shoes and to send him to Emmitt Smith’s Camp in the summertime. Ladainian is one of MY ‘favorite’ player of ALL-TIME. I loved him at TCU I bought his ‘official’ Game-Day Navy Blue Jersey, right after his rookie season. And, also bought a custom #19 ‘official’ Game-Day White Jersey with K. Johnson on the back… For Keyshawn LoL. They were EXPENSIVE. Over $300 BACK THEN. Still have them both, and will actually throw on the Keyshawn one, whenever they have a BIG Playoffs Game. I wanted another team’s to have other than just the Bucs one, though… So, I think I ended up making a GREAT choice (everyone use to tell me that about the LT one) LoL. The Chargers had always been my west coast team to kinda root for anyway, and then I LOVED Ladainian… So, it was an easy choice. I was really hoping to see him CRUSH Emmitt’s record. Since, I thought it would make for SUCH a wonderful story, about attending his camp and about his mother. It was SUCH a great story. I already knew about it way before his HOF speech thanking HER and everything. It’s one of the reasons why I really liked and rooted for him. Of course, HIS TALENT being #1. I’m pretty sure the announcers would talk about it all the time, going back to TCU.

Melvin, the Pitino story is cool. I know one of his old assistants Kevin Willard might have been around the same time as he started. Both of them are really great guys and super competitive.

Rick Pitino? If so that’s awesome. Coming back to school as a kid that was a thing for my friend, who’s got the coolest camp merch/shirt. Did Offense/Defense twice in Jr High, but spent the summer of ‘01 up in Syracuse at Paul Pasqualonis’ camp. Walking into the Carrier dome is something I’ll never forget.

@ Bucnjim – Oh, yeah… I always LOVED Ralph Willard. He was Pitino’s “GUY” for many years, even with the Knicks. I think he’d just left for the Western Kentucky job right before that summer.

@ Bucnjim – Oh, you’re taking about “Kevin.” Haha Ralph’s SON. Yeah, I remember Kevin playing high school at Bowling Green, when his dad was Western’s head coach. He played at Western too, under his dad. I’m pretty sure that he also followed him to Pitt. But, Kevin is doing a HELLUVA JOB FOR HIMSELF, right now!!!!

@ Warren Brooks Lynch – I’ve never made it up to the Carrier Dome before, but those Syracuse teams with Sherman Douglas (I LOVED), Derrick Coleman, & Billy Owens were one of MY ‘all-time’ favorite Teams. That was back when College Basketball was AMAZING, & they had that Dome a ROCKIN. I had some Syracuse fans sitting around me during the ‘96 NCAA Championship Game, & every time Tony Delk would swish another 3 (he hit 7 of them that game), they were like… “WHAT, like WHO IS THIS GUY!?” As if it was some type of FLUKE or something, and they were SO SHOCKED. Acting as if HE was just some SCRUB that nobody had ever heard of before!? I remember it blowing my mind, and KNOWING that they were just “casuals” or something LoL. Cause, I kept dying to turn back to them and say, “IT’S. TONY. FREAKING. DELK.” Only a McDonald’s All-American. CONSENSUS ‘first-team’ ALL-AMERICAN. SEC PLAYER OF THE YEAR. At the time, #4 on the University of KENTUCKY’S All-Time’ SCORING LIST… AND, is getting ready to be named FINAL-4 MVP. Ummmm… Oh yeah, THAT “Tony Delk.” Once dropped 54 in an NBA Game. Damn, HE WAS GOOD.

Straight up good man, I’m going to inquire further see if they accept donations I’m sure every little bit can help the effort. Giving so many an opportunity for an experience that most parents would never probably be able to afford to give their kid.

He seems like a great person that wants to win games.
Going elsewhere to do so is the wisest decision.
Mike Evans thought so and now he has a real QB and HC.

Good to know. Twocoach probably puts him in on defense in 2026. He loves him some versatility, even if a player sucks at it.
