“That Means He’s All-In”

November 26th, 2024

It’s rare to hear Todd Bowles isolate one snap from a player and attach a bunch of deep love and meaning to it.

But the gushing Bucs head coach went there today on the Buccaners Radio Network.

No, he wasn’t referencing Baker Mayfield holding off Pro Bowl pass rusher Nick Bosa with a stiff-arm for 10 steps before completing a fourth-down throw with the Bucs-49ers game on the line. It was Mayfield’s block for Bucky Irving 35 yards down field late Sunday against the Giants.

“The blocking play he made on Bucky’s run was probably the best play I’ve seen him do this year, regardless of anything else,” Bowles told the Buccaneers Radio Network.

“That’s impressive for a quarterback to run the down the field that far and say, ‘Follow me’ and still get a chip block off that way. That means he’s all-in. The team’s all-in. Everybody sees he’s out there doing everything else. It just hypes the team up more.”

Joe would call that leadership. And it starts by playing to the whistle on every snap.

Mayfield exemplified that early in the second quarter when Sean Tucker fumbled at the 3 yard line and it was Mayfield who came sprinting over to pounce on it and attempt to get up and score.

Joe loved both those plays.

Imagine if the Bucs had everyone on defense willing to play like Mayfield does consistently.

    Just middling right BucHoles

  2. BA's Red Pen Says:

The occult of Trask does not approve this message.

  3. Baking with Coen Says:

Let’s Buck, Tuck, White and BAKE!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Saskbucs Says:

Guy is a warrior, and another reason I don’t understand the recent Licht bashing I am seeing. Baker at 35 million is a massive steal. There are unemployed QBs making more than him right now haha.

  5. Bucnjim Says:

What a difference it made just having Evans on the field. The Giants weren’t able to keep extra players in the box and it opened up several lanes throughout the game. The Panthers are playing good ball, but Mayfield should have his way with the last-place defense. Hopefully, we can come back home and be 6-6 then make a run.

  6. Bojim Says:

I’ve said before, when Mayfields name was mentioned as a possible Bucs QB I was praying that he would come here. And yep, I really like Trask. Baker gave us an identity. He’s the QB that we needed.

  7. Durango 95 Says:

If you can’t appreciate the way Baker approaches the game and everything he puts into it find a new team and find a new sport. The most exciting QB this team has ever had and outside of Brady the best QB this franchise has ever had. Imagine where this team would be without him. Dude is under appreciated.

  8. ModHairKen Says:

Durango 95 is right. Baker Mayfield is the most complete QB this team has ever had. He can make a bad O Line look good. He can throw deep on the move. He will sacrifice his body for a 1st down. He does not quit on plays.

The other players see this. The greatest move forward will be next year. Need to get some LBs and an Edge rusher. Healthy Kancey from day one. Godwin back at full tilt.

2024 is going to be good. 2025 is going to be a Super Bowl run.

  9. Jerseybuc Says:

Imagine if bake had a defense behind him.

  10. orlbucfan Says:

Guys like Sonny Jorgensen back in the Stone Age did the same thing. That is why I wish BM would calm down and think before he reacts. His OLine is maturing

  11. SenileSenior Says:

What little I have seen of Trask tells me he has talent. Do not know that he is NFL starter level. In addition to physical talent Mayfield has the extras that make him an above average NFL starter. I am now confident he could lead our team to a Super Bowl. Love it that he is our guy.

    Go Bucs!!

  12. Gipper Says:

    ModHair,

If Licht can work his magic on defense like he did with O line, think Bucs will be in Super Bowl discussion next year. Worth reminding all that Bucs beat both Eagles and Lions this year. Collectively those two teams have lost a combined 3 games this year. We know the shoulda and coulda with 49ers and Chiefs. The ones that really hurt were the two losses to ATL where the human statue Cousins shredded the defense.

  13. Bosch Says:

    Leadership. Couldn’t agree more.

  14. BigBucFan90 Says:

LVD is the only one who matches energy of baker, I’m hoping Edward’s being back kinda gives juice to our defense

  15. Scott Says:

He really plays like an old vet. Sees the game well. No moment is too big.

  16. dbbuc711 Says:

It is surprising to me that no giants player saw Mayfield an took the opportinity to lay a big hit on the QB

  17. Irish Laughter Says:

Put Baker in the right culture that has been build here over the past four years (right Joe), and what a difference the Bucs are today. As I said before, the Bucs will run the rest of the season and make it to the SB. Count on it. Keeping it real in Ireland.

  18. JBBUCS_06 Says:

What would we all be saying if when Bake went to make the block the defender pushed him Derrick Henry style and he fell and separated his throwing shoulder?

“Hey QB…dont risk the season on one block on a run that already was way over the expected yards anyway” 🤷🏿‍♂️

  19. B Says:

Yeah it’s fun to watch, but this guy throws picks if the game dictates has to go outside the short passing game. We can’t play from behind and we can’t close out games because of it. He is creative and tough because he has to be. We need a much better defense to be a threatening team in the playoffs, even if we get there. Counting on running the table after Thanksgiving every year not sustainable, but it is entertaining.

  20. GoneGator Says:

It’s like I said when he got here…. enough “talent” but desire, effort, intangibles off the charts. Dudes a “ballplayer” and his effort is there every snap. His best ball is yet to come!

LVD and Bucky are a couple more that play with attitude. Hoping to see that spread throughout the locker room and on the field every sunday.

  21. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

You see even mayfield knows that just one more block anytime can spring Irving to a tuddie. Sometimes I feel the coaches do not understand the talent Irving possesses on so many levels. And it’s too bad really .watching Irving riding the pines in the fourth quarter like in the Frisco loss, with the game in the balance during crunch time. Because I’m a huge believer in a team playing their best players in the fourth quarter during crunch time. This is something that has clearly gone remiss on the Bucs coaching staff for reasons that will forever remain a complete mystery to me. This Bucs coaching staff doesn’t know what they have or choose to ignore what they have. Either is grounds for early dismissal imo. Not playing Irving with the game in the balance is an indictment.

  22. heyjude Says:

Love this Baker video just as much as the strong armed one! Both are awesome. Too funny how Goedeke was fixing Baker’s sleeve afterwards too. Teamwork.

  23. Gipper Says:

Coach Bowles and Jon Gruden are BakerBois along with dozens of existing and former Bucs, ex NFL players, and commentators who say flattering things about Mayfield. For that matter, we might have to conclude that the Joe’s are BakerBois. Mayfield is going to end the latest round of nonsense by showing off his deep passing ability between now and the end of the season. O line has rounded into great shape and can provide the time that every QB needs to throw deep.

  24. #1bucsfan Says:

It’s those types of plays he’s bin doing for the past 2 seasons as a buc that has made me a huge fan of his. Love it. We need a whole roster of baker attitude and aggressive play style. Let em bake

  25. D Cone Says:

If Mayfield would not have gotten in Irving’s way there is no way the defenders catch him and he scores.. Mayfield was an obstruction and cost him a 95 yard touchdown run.

Follow me? There wasn’t a person in front of Irving and I am sure he knows the way to the End Zone.

  26. Kitsune Says:

Can some of you understand why some lifelong Browns fans turned their back on that incompetent franchise after they kicked Baker (who got them a playoff win against Pittsburgh just a few seasons after their 1-31 futility, and in spite of having new HC & OC pretty much every year) to the curb after a season of playing injured…so they could sell the farm and give a ridiculous contract to Deshaun Watson? He’s not perfect, but I still just don’t understand how you make that decision. Dumb.

  27. JimBobBuc Says:

Baker and the OL are working together. Baker is getting rid of the ball quickly using Bill Walsh’s West Coast offense ( Joe calls it Dink and Dunk), and the OL has a clean pocket for him. Against the Giants, Baker chose to run rather than holding the ball in the pocket too long and taking a sack. Bucky and the run game are also helping Baker. Of course, Coen is the conductor.

  28. Kenton Smith Says:

D Conehead – Bucky Irving has been gifted with an array of ball carrying skills. Sadly, elite speed is not one of them. Quickness but not speed. Baker making that block freed Bucky up for 10 extra yards. Effectively he blocked 2 guys. You can fool some people Conehead but you can’t fool me.

  29. Jarchista Says:

Fact: Bucky Irving’s 40 yard dash time is 4.55 s
    Fact: Cor’dale Flott’s 40 yard dash time is 4.4 s
Flott was the closest Giant to Irving and had just made contact with Irving at the Bucs’ 40 yard line when Baker took Flott down. Irving was finally downed at
the Giants 40 yard. Kenton is correct in his assessment of extra yardage gained due to Baker’s intervention. Additionally it appears that Flott was in the process of attempting to strip the ball from Irving.
