Odell Beckham Vs. Chris Godwin

May 9th, 2024

How does he stack up?

So yesterday Joe was bouncing around and heard a thought-provoking NFL comment that got Joe wondering about Chris Godwin.

While listening to the “GM Shuffle Podcast” co-hosted by former NFL suit Michael Lombardi, the first subject of discussion was about Miami signing Odell Beckham.

Lombardi sarcastically wondered if #NFLMedia was able to pick themselves up off the ground because the world had stopped spinning waiting on word where Beckham would land.

Not sarcastically, Lombardi said Beckham may be the most overrated NFL player in the league. The amount of run Beckham gets is astonishing for a guy who has basically been a second-rate player since blowing out a knee in the Super Bowl in February 2022.

Even before the knee injury, Beckham was past his prime.

Joe fully agrees. Shoot, you’d think Beckham is a Hall of Fame player, a five-time All-Pro the way his every move is chronicled with breathless anticipation. Beckham isn’t even the second-best receiver in his 2014 draft class. The best in that class would be Mike Evans followed by Davante Adams.

But you’d never know that from #NFLMedia. Why is that?

As usual, Joe suspects the fantasy types are somehow behind it, along with Beckham having starred in New York. If you think about it, only recently has Evans been getting the hype he’s deserved and warranted over the years.

Evans got his just props because he put up so many numbers it got to the point where folks couldn’t ignore him any longer.

Lombardi made it clear that Beckham is not a bad player, just that he doesn’t come close to the hype. Lombardi likened Beckham to Dez Bryant. Joe thought that was fair.

Then Joe got to thinking, is Beckham better than Chris Godwin? Beckham has Godwin beat in many receiving categories with a large advantage in touchdowns.

However, Godwin was drafted by the Bucs three years after Beckham, yet he trails Beckham by only 1,242 yards. Beckham averages 72 receiving yards a game. Godwin averages 64.

Broken down per season, Godwin has the edge. Godwin averages 955 yards a season and has had four 1,000-yard receiving seasons. Beckham averages 881 yards a season and has had five 1,000-yard receiving seasons.

And if you want to be biased for Godwin, there is very little drama around Godwin. Beckham? His middle name is drama.

For example, you will never see Godwin get into the middle of a sparring match with a kicker’s net on the sidelines. Nor will you ever see Godwin mimic a dog watering a tree (Joe has to admit that was hilarious).

So is Godwin better than Beckham? It’s not a wildly absurd thought.

On the other hand, Evans long ago lapped Beckham.

Lombardi did add something interesting. He gave Beckham props on building a massive rep for himself all off one catch.

Once Beckham got hurt two years in a row as a Giant, coupled with his antics, it was game over. Yes he was essentially the mvp, before he got hurt during the superbowl, but other than that blip during his post Giants days, he hasn’t done anything newsworthy.

That catch his rookie year, catapulted his career to stardom and he’s been living off that forever. Sure when he was healthy, he was dynamic, but like I said before, a foot injury and one if not two acl tears, plus he’s pushing 30, not good.

We do owe him a huge favor tho, because of his street cred, his dad, and his whispering, he torpedoed Baker’s reputation to the point where we got him at a huge discount last year and probably these upcoming years. So thanks OBJ.

  2. FrontFour Says:

    Beckham is yesterday’s news.

  3. geno711 Says:

It’s not driven by Fantasy Football leagues as Godwin is taken before Beckham.

  4. heyjude Says:

All in on Godwin! And gotta throw some love to his wife Mariah too!

Beckham is only on a year contract with Miami fully earning approximately 8 mil, so we may see some changes in him. Their coach is awesome and says it like it is. So Beckham will need to step up.

  5. Beeej Says:

Evans pulled off one of those catches last year, just wasn’t a td

  6. realistic-optimistic Says:

If you need one crazy, improbable catch, maybe you choose OBJ. If you need a professional to consistently put up underrated 1K seasons, give me Godwin.

  7. Bucnjim Says:

If you consider all the intangibles like blocking, sacrificing his body over the middle, playing very hurt, and being a fantastic teammate then it’s not even remotely close. Godwin is by far the best and much better than most other receivers.

  8. Easy The Great Says:

Beckham is the most over rated receiver in NFL history. If it wasn’t for that one catch against Dallas he wouldn’t even be in the league.

  9. Bojim Says:

Yep. Overrated. Kinda like U2. Great but not the greatest.

  10. Conner50 Says:

Beckham is definitely overhyped and past his prime by a long shot. Give me Godwin over him any day

  11. Bucsfan951 Says:

Who can forget when Josh Norman got under his skin and that fiasco?

  12. BakerFan Says:

That last line says it all, one catch made this guys reputation as a great player. He is not worth the baggage he brings.

  13. westernbuc Says:

I think comparing OBJ to Dez Bryant is kind of disrespectful to Dez.

  14. KABucs Says:

… and he’s not even the most talked about Beckham… in terms of headline grabbing, fame, money earned & past-prime overratedness. Sure, David pre-dates Odell a bit… but he married Spice Girl. Top that Odell! Maybe he can try to hang out with Messi while down there… doubt Lionel wants any part of that drama.

Obj is right up there with Desean Jackson as the most overrated wr of all time. I cringe when I hear people on the radio(buc fan) and in media talk about this guy. Desean Jackson stats when he was healthy , omitting his last 4 seasons, are roughly 3.75 rec per game (52 catches per season) for about 65 yrds per game. His stat effectiveness when heallthy is comparable to robert woods and john brown jr. . Players with better stats with comparable longevity…..Adam Thielen ,Tyler Lockett, Brandin Cooks all have better per game per year stats.

  19. stpetebucfan Says:

OBJ is a major reason Baker Mayfield had reputation issues. If you go to the NFL dictionary and look up..”Locker room cancer”…OBJ is right up there with AB and some other prima donnas.

Contrast CG14 who is a real class act as well as talented.

  20. toad bowels Says:

Is it possible to keep Chris Godwin as a Buc, by signing him to a long-term cap-friendly deal that is fair to both Gowin and the Bucs?

After Evans, Godwin is the best Bucs WR in team history. He’s a team player, a great blocker, versatile, and a fan-favorite team Captain. If there is a way to keep him that would be wonderful.

If you put 2 lil beeches in a bar there is bound to be trouble too. it was both and both got what they deserved. Cut/Traded.

What it comes down to is 100 mustaches can live under one roof but not 4 breasts.

  22. Brian in St Pete Says:

Beckham was considered an elite wr because of 2 things. 1) Northeast Bias 2) The Catch. Outside of those two things he has been anywhere between a serviceable #3 and an average #1. At this point in his career he may not even be a top 3 on the dolphins.

  23. David Says:

He hasn’t been great since 2016! Is reputation truly is living off a catch.
Since then, he’s had several very bad years and two decent years, the last decent year being 5 years ago.

  24. Chark Says:

Obj is completely overrated . Doesn’t always run routes with authorityor block if he is not involved in the game. The media built him up and he took the bait and thought he was above his qb and teammates. Can’t stand the guy and his career was gonna peter out irregardless of the injuries. Threw qbs under the bus if he didn’t get the ball. Jarvis landry, Rashad Higgins, dpj did well with baker without “the distraction”

  25. Esteban85 Says:

I really hope Godwin has a breakout year and forces the Bucs to keep him around. He is a good man and the quintessential buccaneer Jason Licht player type. Never has this man kvetched about anything and has always sacrificed his body for this team. This being his second year off the ACL injury and his return to the slot, I think this could be a big year for our #2 receiver. Can’t wait to see this high powered offense clicking on all cylinders

  26. realistic-optimistic Says:

@D Cone, that’s good stuff. lol

    Very true.

  27. BillyBucco Says:

I think Godwin has a big year back in the slot.
We could have 3 1,000 yard receivers and a 1,000 yard back.
If Otton does become legit, this offense can be down right scary under Coen.
It all starts with the O Line and keeping Baker clean.
We have the best depth at DB we have had in a while. Maybe even better than 2019-2020 because Thomas and Hall are veterans. Tykee is a baller and W&W at safety could be a top 5 duo.
We are gonna beat some good teams this year.
12 wins is not out of the question.
My paper is on fire now lol.

  28. Gipper Says:

OBJ is all about self promotion and little else. His idea of running a pass route is to run down field waiving his hand in the air. He was a colossal distraction in Cleveland but he ingratiated himself to the media and his teammates who would never question his antics. He was the #3 receiver for the Ravens last year and he won’t be missed this year. Godwin is not close to OBJ. He runs precise routes and Baker always knows where he will be so he can deliver the ball before Godwin goes into his break.

  29. garro Says:

Beckum is a nut case on par with some of the other WRs in the league.
I would take CG over him and many others just on that fact alone.

Two nut cases that should be in prison but probably won’t be. Tyreek and the new nut case Rashee Rice. Can you remember our man AB? All supreme POS.

    Yeah i’ll take Chris thanks.

    Go Bucs!
