Jordan Whitehead Explains Why Players Gravitate To Todd Bowles

March 17th, 2024

Talks Todd Bowles.

Last week when old/new Bucs bone-rattling safety Jordan Whitehead held a press conference to celebrate his re-signing, Whitehead said Bucs coach Todd Bowles was a big draw.

Whitehead explained how if you play on the second or third level of a defense, Bowles is the perfect coach because he will often put players in positions to make plays.

But there is more to Bowles than just a coach. A former safety himself and Whitehead’s Super Bowl defensive coordinator is also life coach, as Whitehead explained it, as much a father figure as a guy who crafted defensive plays.

“He’s going to bring the best out of your game. The person he is – you can talk about anything with him, from ball to life. That’s the biggest thing coming around [for] my second time,” Whitehead said.

“I got in his office and we sat up there for an hour. The first 10 minutes you talk about football then after that you just talk about life.

“I can’t say [anything] wrong about Coach [Todd] Bowles. He’s been there for me ever since I came [into the league]. He’s been coaching me. Him bringing me back here, that says enough right there, giving me an opportunity.”

Joe has heard similar stories about Bowles. Sometimes after practice, Bowles will have an impromptu position meeting with players or an unplanned defensive meeting. After 20 minutes or so, after food is ordered, the hangout may continue or it may turn into sort of an indoor barbecue.

The only player Joe can think of who had an issue with Bowles after playing for him might be — keyword: might — is former linebacker Devin White. Though White never said this on the record, enough bread crumbs are lying around that Joe doesn’t think White liked or appreciated how Bowles was using him.

The year after the Bucs won the Super Bowl and White’s numbers slipped, he seemed to bristle when asked about new or different responsibilities.

That could explain why White was a healthy scratch in Green Bay last December.

Okay now. Im eventually going to start believing he is a decent man/coach. He may truly just not care how he appears to his fanbase. and thats fine. I just hate that feeling during a bad game or a losing streak that he has lost the locker room. Clearly thats never been the case. I cant wait until LVD54 does the documentary on being a Buc. We will then know all. Go Bucs.!

  2. Beeej Says:

We’ll know about DW by late September or so

I understand the clock management disagreements and the “style” points whether it’s the stoic demeanor on the sidelines or the defense first approach to the game but I’ve never understood the nasty juvenile nicknames and how personal some seem to wish to make everything.

Again ultimately I support the Al Davis view…”Just win baby!”

There’s more than one way to win. I do enjoy the fact that Bowles does it with class and dignity and I suspect Liam is going to bring balance to the entire deal with an effective running/passing combo to complement Bowles defensive mind set.

I’m OK with that as long as it isn’t simply mindless plunges into the line. The Bucs have the weapons with at least four good possession receivers if they simply wish to move the chains and run the ball judiciously.

  4. TomBucsFan Says:

bowles always seemed like a good person, but they usually finish last.

  5. Couch Fan Says:

I do not care how much The ReTodd is liked. Being liked does not win games. Being liked does not make you a good football coach. The Bucs are one of the worst coached teams in the league and I personally cant wait for his luck to run out and this guy to be gone. Barely winning the worst division in the NFL is nothing to be proud of IMO and if that makes me a bad fan then so be it.

  6. Buc1987 Says:

Couch we could always go back to Lovie or Schiano if you like.

  7. Proudbucsfan Says:

I personally didn’t have any faith in TB. I blame 2021s playoff loss on him. I’m a firm believer that if we would’ve won that game the Bucs would’ve had back to back Lombardi trophies. I am getting better at supporting him though because he did improve last year and his teams are getting better. I can’t help but root for him because he is a nice guy and I do want him to succeed as a coach. He can always get better.

  8. Couch Fan Says:

Other than ReTodd having a more talented team than either of those two, there isnt much difference in their coaching.

  9. Capt.Tim Says:

    I dont question success.
Coach Bowles is getting the job done!

“I do not care how much The ReTodd is liked. Being liked does not win games.”

Nor does being uninformed or unduly negative make you a bad fan. But it does point out that you already have your opinion set in stone and are unwilling to revisit it much less change your mind!

So I do not think anybody here would disagree with a basic statement of being nice does not win games and in fact the most negative would dig up the old bromide..”nice guys finish last”. It’s your priorities and unfounded conclusions that follow.

The very FIRST thing out of Whitehead’s pie hole.

“Whitehead explained how if you play on the second or third level of a defense, Bowles is the perfect coach because he will often put players in positions to make plays.”

Not to overdo the snark or be a smart arse are we supposed to believe you know more about positioning of players in the second and third levels than Bowles…or Whitehead? So you blow by the FIRST observation to FOCUS on the second or ADDITIONAL thought. “But there is more to Bowles than just a coach.”

So just to make sure I’m not missing something. Whitehead considered by most here to be an incredibly lucky move to get him back…expresses his appreciation of Bowles TECHNICAL skills because of Bowles EXPERIENCE yet you take the fact that because Whitehead also LIKES Bowles as a classy human being there is something negative to be found.

Well yes there is! Nice guys finish last right?

  11. Crickett Baker Says:

Couch fan, IDK where you are coming from. Would you like it better if we lost in the worst division? Would you like it better if we weren’t in the playoffs? Sheesh. Some “fans”!

Todd is a horrible coach. Just watch the game…..any game!

  13. Obvious Says:

LOVE HIM as a defensive coach! Not so much as a head coach….

His defensive players think he wonderful but not a peep from The Offense. Well except from Baker. He’s the gifted one but Mayfield has earned my respect and appreciation regardless…

Bowles…. Gonna need to see MUCH MORE from him for the “TEAM” and management thereof….

  14. Couch Fan Says:

Nor does being uninformed or unduly negative make you a bad fan. But it does point out that you already have your opinion set in stone and are unwilling to revisit it much less change your mind!
    ——-

Incorrect. If I am wrong I have no problem saying in wrong. However, in 3 years, Has Bowles proven to be a consistently good coach? No. Has he shown in anything that would make you think his coaching is getting better? No. His team runs how and cold. Usually cold. Same coaching mistakes, every season. So he’s giving me nothing in 3 seasons thats allowed me to change my mind. Like I’ve said im not impressed barely winning a very bad division.

Maybe my standards are much higher than some of yours. I dont know but Im not going to change my standards simply because he’s a nice guy and likeable.

  15. Couch Fan Says:

    ——

I dont care what you believe. I gave my opinion. You are free not to like it. Whitehead can say whatever he likes. You can believe him if you like. I rather believe my eyes when I see players routinely out of position and getting burned for 3 seasons. Which of course would directly counter what Whitehead has said. Again you are free to believe whatever you like. Im not attempting to change anyones mind. Simply stating my own opinion like you are.

  18. Obvious Says:

Plus, Bowles Will Lie about competitions and He SURE LIED TO US ALL! I’m NOT giving him a pass on that one…

Doesn’t matter how you do or don’t feel about Baker, this is a WHOLE OTHER animal… Obviously Bowkes has been TERRIFIED to put others out on the field EVEN FOR PRACTICE and to build credibility for at the least, trade purposes! Now we have a WAISTED 2nd round pick just rotting away FOR NO OTHER REASO. THAN FEAR! Now THAT’S NOT how a proper head coach handles a pro team. Won’t even put guys in, in garbage time to get practice? It REALLY SHOWS his lack of being qualified to run an entire team… Who on the offense talks up Bowles besides Baker??? Anyone? Crickets….. No “Head Coach” material so far… We will see this year

  19. ATLBUC Says:

It’s interesting that Bowles and Mayfield are both getting somewhat deserved accolades and both were just an AWJ goal line forced fumble away from being run outta town.

  20. ManzielMadness Says:

    @Obvious
“Now we have a WAISTED 2nd round pick just rotting away FOR NO OTHER REASO. THAN FEAR!”

For one, BA was the HC, not TB, when we we drafted Trask. I don’t blame Bowles for signing and starting Baker. He played well as evidenced by his new contract.

“Who on the offense talks up Bowles besides Baker??? Anyone? Crickets…..”

Off the top of my head? Liam Cohen, Mike Evans and Tristan Wirfs have all said good things about Baker recently.

Did everyone forget last year was a rebuilding year and we weren’t expected to make the playoffs?

  21. Bucfan Says:

Barely won the weakest division last year. Lets see how Todd does with a first place schedule having such a low key attitude. Even though players make MILLIONS, they still need a ‘fire lit’ to produce.

  22. Dave Pear Says:

Clearly, Todd didn’t use White to the best of his talents. Nor Dean or Davis. That’s a shame.

No doubt Todd is a cool dude and would be an awesome neighbor to grill, chill and pound beers with. But facts are facts.

    – he is a losing head coach, was with the Jets, is with the Bucs
    – his teams start notoriously slow on both sides of the ball, not scoring on first possession of offense and giving up a first possession score on defense
    – his defense sucks at zone, yet he insists on playing it 90% of the time
    – his blitz packages, lauded as being “clever,” are telegraphed and picked up
    – his defense gives it up like a street pro at 3am in the fourth quarter of critical games
    – his love for time of possession to “keep his defense fresh” is befouled by the worst run game in the NFL over the last two years, maybe ever
    – his game management decisions are a few brain cells shy of mediocre at best.

But yeah, he’s a father figure and a cool dude, so his players like him. That’s nice.

It would be promising to see corrective action taken on the glaring repetitive defects, but no reason to expect that after watching him for six seasons as a head coich.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘The only player Joe can think of who had an issue with Bowles after playing for him might be — keyword: might — is former linebacker Devin White. ‘

Obviously White wasn’t happy here, at least this past year, but I can’t remember reading anything to indicate that he had a beef with Bowles. I do seem to remember him stating that he viewed Bowles as ‘a father figure’ or something along those lines.

I seems rather a double standard that no one ever complained about BA messing up the defense, yet TB has often been ridiculed for screwing with the offense (too many runs up the middle, etc). When the defense made a mistake, it wasn’t ‘BA made a mistake’, it was always ‘TB made a mistake’. But in these past 2 years, when the offense screwed up, it was Bowles’ fault because ‘everyone knows that defensive coaches are ultra-conservative’. Like TB was shackling the offense and keeping them from scoring 30 PPG.

And yet according to Canales (and now Coen), Bowles pretty much gave (gives) them a free hand in how they run the offense. So I guess it comes down to who to believe, the coaches & players or the media & fans? Bowles has a pretty good track record here in terms of resurrecting the Bucs’ defense, and without that strong defense we wouldn’t have won anything. I have no problem with him as long as our defense continues to be a strength. The offense will improve providing that we keep improving the talent level in the various position groups.

  24. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Bowles has some head scratching in game decisions, but he can coach up a defense. IMO White has athleticism but a low football IQ. Faked out of position way too many times. Bowles runs a thinking man’s defense.

  25. Dave Pear Says:

BA is a winner. Winning record as HC in Indy, Arizona, and Tampa Bay, with a Lombardi.

Todd is a loser. Losing record as HC at Jets and Bucs. Oversaw the only losing season Tom Brady ever had in his life.

    That is the data.

  26. Tye Says:

Hopefully in the mind of the owners, this season is a prove it year for Todd…
win 10+ games or you done…. get out …. Good Riddance!
Go get a winner that can make the Bucs consistent contenders every week!

  27. Obvious Says:

    Manzelmadness

I wasn’t talking about Baker…. I’m talking about Bowles…. He Lied. Didn’t have to AT ALL but he did again and again about the so called “competition”.

I DON’T appreciate that and I DON’T respect him because of it. I’m not saying he’s a bad guy. In fact he’s an “Outstanding” defensive coach. So far however, he has not shown he a very good Head Coach.
Again, read what I wrote including about Baker… He’s our QB ” REGARDLESS ” of how he got there and I’m content with the way he closed out the year to feel good about him leading us out thus year. HE EARNED IT in my book by “hook or by Crook”…

And regardless of who drafted Trask in this case, it was ALSO BOWLES RESPONSIBLY to see what we actually had in Trask and apparently, Trask must be pretty decent and CLEARLY Bowles was in OBVIOUS FEAR of putting him up against Bakerbany longer. Trask was INDEED climbing that mountain and Bowles blew that up because he wanted Baker. That’s actually FINE… Bowles is the head coach and he can put in whoever he wants BUT BUT BUT HE DOESN’T OR SHOULDN’T HAVE LIED ABOUT IT! And n the meantime he SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEVELOPING TRASK AND WOLFORD!!!!! That’s his responsibility as a HEAD COACH!

What if Baker gets hurt????? THEN WHAT????

Bowles HASN’T BEEN DOING HIS JOB PROPERLY AND HE’S LEAVING US VULNERABLE!

    @Bucfan & stpetebucsfan,

While one can find valid criticisms of Bowles his “stoic demeanor” and “low key attitude” are not one of them.

There are Hall of Fame coaches with this type of personality, including Tom Landry & Tony Dungy. Why this issue keeps getting brought up I don’t understand.

  29. Beeej Says:

  30. Mike Johnson Says:

Often when you have a coach who has been where you are and played in the league, players identify with that. He’s taken hits, gave’em out and accomplished and suffered just like you. I get this feeling our Defense coming up is going to be special. Once we find that pass rush? its possible we hit them ole glory days again back when our D was feared. Remember them?

  32. Dave Pear Says:

Facts are facts. Until Bowels puts together a season that corrects the glaring flaws of his head coaching schemes, he will continue to lose more than he wins over time.

There were some glimmers of change last season before the reversion to the defects in the second half of the Lions game, the last game of the season against the Panthers and second to last against the Saints. The Saints game was particularly galling, Bowles had the team prepared to sleepwalk through the game with a division title on the line. Very typical of Todd results.

I’d bet you that there are plenty of Lions fans who complain on sites like these in Detroit.

The fans in Detroit were extremely loud because last season was the first season in over 30 years that their team won a playoff game!

Davis wants to have a good relationship with the fans, of course he’s going to compliment them.

I follow the Texans pretty closely because I have family there and go to all the Bucs games in Houston. 5’ 10 so not the biggest but he’s a 4.35 guy who is really smart and has great instincts. Bucs would really have some nice depth going into the draft a cb if they got him to sign.

  39. BakerBucs says Says:

    Obvious,
Coach Bowles sees Trask 5-6 hours a day in preseason. Watched him play against nobodies in pre season games. Watched him everyday in practice.

I only saw a part of that. Id be terrified to play Trask. For the thousandth time-
    – the kid doest have the arm strength for the NFL. HE CANT THROW THE SIDELINE OR OUTROUTES WITH NEARLY ENOUGH VELOCITY.
Even when he uses great mechanics, the passes are way slow getting to the reciever. NFL CBs are the best in the world. They will intercept those passes everytime- and its a straight shot to the Endzone.

How can you have watched the preseason games- and not have seen that?
How can any of you not have seen that?
    Its obvious!

  44. Dave Pear Says:

Capt Tim – spot on, he demonstrated that at U of F. I’m a Gator, 5 years there, old days. The Doug Dickey era to Charlie Pell, 76-81. I know Gator football. The thing anyone who is a true Gator fan knows, who is objective, is that the Gators have never – NEVER EVER – produced a franchise quarterback. I mean, Rex Grossman is the best of the lot. Maybe John Reaves but that was a different time when the game Bowels craves was The Game.

Trask is a one read, speed of smell processor of the action in front of him and would make Mike Glennon look like Dan Marino by comparison.

His next career will bring him success. He can talk about the glory days when he almost beat Alabama.

@Capt Tim, I’d agree with you if you wrote that in March of 2023 but Trask looked dramatically better this last preseason with plenty of arm strength.

Do a search for the video on YouTube that says:

Bowles record with the Bucs in Super Bowls is 1-0 after his defense held Patrick Mahomes & the Chiefs to zero TDs.

Given that you’re pretty good with math you must realize that that is more wins then losses in Super Bowls.

  58. Dave Pear Says:

When was Bowles ever the head coach of a Super Bowl winning team, as in, the season they won?

“Since 1996” – can you name who the Bucs head coach was the last time the Bucs won a Super Bowl. Hint – it happened after the 2020 season.

  59. Dave Pear Says:

The fact is simple. As a head coach, Bowles is a loser. Do the math. Add em up. Losing record with the Jets. Losing record with Tom Brady (!) losing record with the Bucs. As a head coach. The head coach is in charge of the entire football team, if you don’t know.

Bowles was the DC of a team that stopped one of the greatest offenses of our generation, holding them to zero TDs.

  61. Dave Pear Says:

Fine coordinators are quite often bad head coaches, the non-debate is about bowels performance as a HEAD COACH.

He loses. And he’s not the DC he was while trying to do both either.

Bowels defense were facing two cocktail waitresses playing OT for the Chiefs and Mahomes on one leg. Were the Chiefs receivers not dropping the ball like the second coming of Michael Clayhands, that game is a lot closer.

    Love your Todd, that’s cool.

As a head coach his record speaks for itself.

  65. Obvious Says:

    Capt. Tim

Sorry but things have changed for Trask and his mechanics. I’m not sure what you were watching and reading last season but he cleaned up those issues and then he led the QB competition from week 2 to the end for the most part. GO BACK AND WATCH WITH YOUR OWN LYING EYES.

BUT, BUT, That’s NOT my point. DOESN’T MATTER that he out threw and out played Mayfield in practice. Doesn’t Matter. Bowles wanted Mayfield and that’s his privilege as head coach. My point is WHY BOTHER WITH the LIES? W, T, Fudge??

If you think about it, NOBODY expected Trask to WAKE UP out of nowhere and start kicking butt! Nobody…. But he did. However, the crappy version of Trask is what was on Bowles mind before he saw what he could do but it was far too late. He already PROMISED the job to Mayfield. For whatever his reason were he Always wanted Mayfield as his QB going back in time and nobody INCLUDING Tom Brady was going to be Bowles guy. He had his sights on Mayfield from go and we KNOW THAT AS A FACT now..

In the meantime, his RESPONSIBILITY IS to get as much as possible from the other qb’s because Baker and getting hurt seem to go hand in hand. BIG MISTAKE to not Train Up Trask and Wolford. BIG MISTAKES!

And THAT’S what I’m saying. Nothing More, Nothing Less…

Joe, a theory that may be worth exploring in a future article… It is more important for the coach leading the defense to have defensive players look up to him, than it is for the coach leading the offense to have the offensive players look up to him.

Basically, is genuineness and respect from the coach (even slightly) more important for coaches on one side of the ball than the other.

Sometimes it feels like offense is more dependent on strategy, and defense is more dependent on player buy-in.

    Just a thought…
