It Was Like A Movie For Antoine Winfield

November 12th, 2023

First interception of 2023.

A couple of weeks ago, Bucs coach Todd Bowles, who enjoys some good sarcasm, remarked how defensive lineman Will Gholston had more interceptions (one) than his starting secondary.

It was an accurate yet surprising stat. Despite how safety Antoine Winfield was balling out and playing at an All-Pro level, he didn’t have any picks.

Neither did Carlton Davis or Jamel Dean but that was not surprising since fans grumble often about that goose egg.

Winfield snapped that ugly streak today when he caught an interception midway through the fourth quarter.

Titans quarterback Will Levis went back to pass and was under heavy pressure from Bucs backup outside linebacker Markees Watts. It appeared Watts blasted Levis as he released the ball trying to get the ball down the field to the right side of the field.

The pass looked more like a bad punt with good hang time. Almost too much hang time for Winfield.

Joe asked Winfield after the game about him fielding a punt. He laughed and said it was just like you see in the movies.

“I thought about fair catching it,” Winfield joked. “I saw the ball in the air and it was like nothing else mattered. I knew I had to come down with it.

“There were [other passes this year] where I should have had it. So I’ve got to get this one.

“Everything got quiet. Everything was in slow motion. Just like in the movies. Ball was in the air forever. Man, it was awesome.”

It’s hard for a safety to be named All-Pro without any picks. Winfield has the tackles, the tipped passes, the sacks. No picks.

Until today.

Even if it seemed like a scene from a Hollywood flick.

Please don’t start calling Antoine Winfield Jr. a “misplaced punt returner” because he can catch the football 😂😂😂😂😂

Cha ching, did you hear that! That’s the cash register, that’s the big money Bucs are about to pay Winfield. Deserves every penny. Shows up every game. For me I will always remember the infamous piece sign Winfield gave T.Hill during super bowl. Great character and great player. Jason pay the man!!

Two 3-5 teams battling it out. The home team won, congrats. The Bucs are 4 for 4 against bad teams.

Winfield is a player that I am very happy we got. Does his father ever attend his games?

  8. Buccos Says:

Nice bounce back game for the defense. Maybe they needed to get blown up once so they didn’t feel like they were so awesome

You left off the forced fumbles and fumble recoveries.

The guy gets more expensive to resign every week. I really can’t believe they didn’t get a deal done before the season.

@ dbbuc711: Antoine Winfield Sr. does a weekly film study session with his son of the past week’s game going back to when he was in college so I think it’s safe to assume he also attends most of not all of his games. The Bucs didn’t just score a beast of a safety, they got themselves a solid position coach for him for free as well.

With a tipped pass with that much hang time, it was good no Tennessee player was near him or he would have got decked. That ball hung in the air too long!! I was sweating bullets watching that come down.
