“Perfectly Fine Playing Ugly Football”

September 23rd, 2022

One astute former quarterback sees the Green Bay Packers as a team that fails when it’s called upon to play ultra-physical, low-scoring football against a strong opponent.

Former Bucs QB Chris Simms made that point during his NBC Sports analyst gig this week. However, the Bucs are far more suited to winning that way and welcome the opportunity, per Simms.

“I think they’re perfectly fine playing ugly football,” Simms said. “… I just have a little more faith in them even though they’re injured galore. I like their [offensive] scheme.”

For those unaware, the Packers have more holes at the receiver/tight end than the Bucs do, per Joe’s humble assessment. And that’s difficult to achieve.

Throw in a suffocating Bucs run defense and a questionable Packers defensive front, and it’s hard to imagine Green Bay marching into The Licht House and beating the Bucs.

“We saw the Bears run it down their friggin’ throat,” Simms said of the Week 2 Packers-Bears game.

Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady are no Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert, per Simms. So they can’t make a ton happen on their own and a depleted-weapons game favors Tampa Bay.

Simms picks the Bucs to win 20-14, and win ugly. Joe will raise a Big Storm beer to that!

    A win Sunday can go along way to securing the no. 1 seed in the NFC. Go Bucs!

  2. TAMPA BAY DEMON™ Says:

    If we can go 3-0 with THIS opening schedule that we have ALL been concerned with during the whole offseason…

    AND….
    … with all of these frikkin injuries….

    Then LOOK THE F OUT, NFL, as the season rolls on.

  3. Mr. Editor Says:

    The Packers’ WRs are just fine. They are playing games with the injury report, much like the Saints did.

    Is there a scouting report on the Packers’ secondary? How well their secondary matches up against our ever-evolving WR corps will be key.

  4. Redeemer Says:

    Winning is all that matters, no matter how it looks. Would you rather be 1-1 or 0-2 with great passing numbers? I actually miss ugly football, as the league has become a Madden game.

  5. CrackWise Says:

    @TAMPA BAY DEMON
    Ok I will admit, EVEN I was worried about the first 4 games. Although I was calling for us to go 4-0 playing SMASHMOUTH (UGLY?) football before it was the COOL thing to say. Had to get that young OL acclimated SOME HOW right!!!

    THAT SAID,
    @Redeemer
    I too miss winning UGLY. “JUST GIVE US 17 POINTS” – HOFer Warren “QB Killer” SAPP!!!

  6. Dooley Says:

    Ugly, pretty, ideal, unorthodox, if it results in a “W” I’ll take it!

  8. Packer Informant Says:

    The Packers secondary is strong when they play together. Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, and Rasul Douglas make for a very strong top 3 at CB. Adrian Amos is as steady a player at Safety that you could ask for. Darnell Savage flashed a couple years ago but has fizzled out a bit since a change was made at DC. He is insanely athletic and was probably the fastest player on the team before Stokes was drafted. Still, people are down on him since he is not consistently playing at the level he has shown to be capable of. There was a lot of miscommunication week 1 for the Packers on defense. I suspect that will change as the year progresses. This is the most talented defense the Packers have had on paper in a long time. Miscommunication was the story for week 1 as missed tackles was for week 2. We shall see what week 3 brings. Good luck to you guys.. I’m hoping for a good game with no significant injuries to either team.

    Saw this joke on another site and thought I’d share:

    Spanish word of the day: Cheesehead.

    I asked my wife if the Packers were going to win and cheesehead no.

    GO BUCS!!!

    All said and done… A WIN is a WIN!!! LFG!!!

    Good stuff, Packer Informant. Thanks for sharing.

    Good luck to your team as well, and let’s hope for no injuries to either team.

    ^^^^^^^^
    Hahaha, good one. I don’t remember another QB to have more passes batted down than Chris Simms.

  16. Buccsfanchad Says:

    Buc Ball is alive and well!!!!

  17. OrlandoBucFan Says:

    Dungy ball is back in the house. Let’s hope the defense keeps up its relentless pressure. Rodgers melts like cheese in the September Florida sun.

  18. ClwJB Says:

    Through two games this team has completely embraced their new coaches attitude/ identity and it’s not a lot different than Dungy

    This D can carry us a long way if we can maintain the pass rush and keep the TO’s flowing

    The O will find its stride in due time

    Cole was a great puzzle piece addition – I think they have wanted Scotty to fill that role but he is just too inconsistent in route running and reacting to balls thrown prior to his break – he is on the ground too much, slips a lot

    Expect Cole Mike and in a few weeks Chris get the passing game back on track

    We have no TE threat at all

    Jones is brittle as fine china

    Gage if not really injured is a bust this far

  19. geno711 Says:

    Rasul Douglas was a journeyman until last year. Maybe it is the system that fits him, but he had a good year last year.

    Most would say that Alexander is stronger than Carlton Davis. I am not sure that their number 2 outside corner or slot corner is stronger.

    I do like our safeties more than theirs.

    We will see this game.

  20. Redeemer Says:

    I’d pay special attention to Watson. The Packers will try to get him one on one on the outside. He dropped a sure TD pass from Rodgers week 1. The kid is a burner

  24. Biff Barker Says:

    Gritty, ugly wins are always better than 1 point losses with seconds on the clock.

    Longtime Bucs fans know this.

  25. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    CrackWise,,

    Absolutely 💯 man. Smashmouth football is fun. And one gets the feeling that Tom & receiving crew have been hellbent to get on the same page in the passing game.

    Defense has been lights out.

    BUCS 27
    Packers 10

  26. CrackWise Says:

    27-10 is about right.

    I am gonna price is right ya.

    27-13 Bucs

  27. Rod Munch Says:

    I was listening to some Packers podcast, and the morons there were saying Scotty Miller could be a #2 WR on a lot of teams, and is, at worst, a #3 WR. LOL! One play vs the Packers and he’s in their head for all-time.

  28. Rod Munch Says:

    BTW, I brought this up a couple of days ago, but it’s about to go bigly. The 11pm track update of this upcoming hurricane is going to put it directly over top of Tampa, probably next Wednesday night or Thursday morning as a CAT3 storm.

    Now, if you know anything about hurricane forecasting, you know the safest place you can be is at the center of the cone of a 5-day forecast, it literally never hits there. But that won’t stop all the stupid people from buying up all the gas and water and food and then packing it into their cars and then driving out of state, exactly like they did for Irma in 2018. So if you need to get gas, you may consider doing it tonight as the panic will probably start tomorrow (although supplies shouldn’t start running out until Sunday).

  29. Bucsfan13 Says:

    @Rod Munch. LMAO The same Scotty Miller who was close to being cut. They don’t follow this team, and it shows. People are still bringing up Perriman’s fluke 2019 breakout season as if he’s a true WR1. This team gets exposed when they don’t have the talent at WR because it’s whole offensive philosophy is that our man will beat your man. There is rarely any creative scheming. Maybe scheme open some of the receivers who have trouble creating separation. I’ve seen some receivers on the Packers running wide open, and that’s because of their coach’s creative play calling.

  30. brooks Says:

    Don’t agree at all. Ugly football doesn’t win championships. Won’t beat the chiefs next Sunday….

  31. CrackWise Says:

    @Rod Munch for MVP-oster!!!

  32. CrackWise Says:

    @brooks

    10 points can beat the Chiefs, WTF are you talking about….

    HELLO, is there anybody out there…….. Q music

  33. Redeemer Says:

    @brooks, you’re right. It won’t work long term. But, this is the only way they can win right now. This offense will never look as good as it did last year, unless Gronk and AB come back. It will get better, but this team is only going as far as the defense takes them.

  34. Redeemer Says:

    CrackWise, 10 points can’t beat KC. I like a good slobberknocker too, but winning this way is unsustainable in the modern NFL. Mahomes might even be better without Hill. It’s made him focus on reading defenses, instead of winging it.

  35. CrackWise Says:

    @Redeemer

    Don’t become “Pink Floyd – Comfortably numb”.

    We the Future is only as good as one can imagine.

    I imagine SMASH MOUTH OLD SHCOOL (ugly) football for the first FOUR games!

    OF course, everyone is free to think as they please. I accept your thoughts friend.

  36. CrackWise Says:

    But so we are on the same page, you did you watch the SB in 2020 right? @Redeemer

  37. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    brooks,
    Smashmouth won’t beat the Chiefs?
    It LITERALLY beat them in the Super Bowl.

    Let’s focus on GB for now.
    Go BUCS.

  38. TAMPA BAY DEMON Says:

    Wow CrackWise,, we are DEFINITELY on the same page. And your posts are rockin’,, man.

  39. BillyBucco Says:

    @Packer Informant
    Good luck to you too.

    Rodgers just doesn’t play good there.
    Bucs will have to make mistakes to lose I think.

    I predict GBs first drive is the best one.
    5 sacks 3 turnovers
    Bucs 31 Packers 9

  40. steele Says:

    Ugly is beautiful. It is THE way to win. Any longtime Bucs fans know and remember fondly. But ugly winning demands that you have a physically dominant team that can impose it on a consistent basis. I’m not sure this team has that. It’s too soon to know what this team is. Besides injured and scrambling.

  41. CrackWise Says:

    @TAMPA BAY DEMON

    ROCKING??? Ummmm, I don’t know nothing about that…. 20 BUCs though, I got you FOR sure.

    LOL

  42. CrackWise Says:

    @BillyBucco

    You are over the mark FOR SURE.

    Outside of those first 10-15 SCRIPTED plays. TODD has had our D 100% ON POINT the first two games…. Against DESCENT? Offenses!!!

    And our O has play TWO top 10 Ds from LAST SEASON!!!

    This is looking WAY better than our SUPER BOWL season IMHO!!!!!!

  43. Bucsfan13 Says:

    @Crackwise Thank you for pointing out something that fans seem to forget when discussing our offensive struggles. We played two top 5 defenses to start the season! The Cowboys D is legit just ask the Bengals, and fans shouldn’t be surprised if we struggle against the Packers. They also have a very good defense. You mix great defenses with unimaginative play calling and injuries, and you get this offensive product.

  52. Megan Downs Says:

    This makes a lot of sense – the Packers are definitely a team that struggles when they have to play physical, low-scoring football. The Bucs, on the other hand, are much better suited to winning in that kind of game. Thanks for sharing this analysis!
