Todd Bowles Gets A Five-Year Contract

March 30th, 2022

Todd Bowles

What a day it is for new Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles.

Joe’s biggest advice to Bowles? Put in the work immediately to make sure you have the right playcallers lined up and vetted if/when Byron Leftwich leaves for a head coaching job after this season.

Per Adam Schefter of ESPN, Team Glazer tore up Bowles’ defensive coordinator contract and gave him a new five-year deal as head coach. Of course, there could be an option year(s) as part of the contract, and Team Glazer has never hesitated to fire a head coach. So the duration of the contract doesn’t carry a ton of meaning.

But it is significant. This is no trial run. The Bucs have moved all-in with Bowles, apparently confident that the deuce Bowles dropped as head coach of the Jets (2015-2018) was just a vital learning experience and/or the fault of Jets management.

Oh ffs I hope we don’t implode … I’m still salty AF from that last defensive play agains Rams

  2. Your Mom Says:

Player talent is what really matters most. Coaching is not nearly as important.

  3. SOEbuc Says:

Thank God it wasn’t Byron, right. Clyde for OC.

  4. New England Patriots Fan Says:

NFL really really wants an African American HC to win a Championship it’s been over a decade.

Bucs will have a African American HC OC and maybe DC. Tampa will be an example of African America coaching excellence.

They will be media darling and get the push you need from the NFL to contend for a SB

I really like the hire as it follows a key storyline in the NFL, and storylines are very important clues as to whom win SB each year.

  5. james west Says:

ME TOO BUCS&BOLTS, i really was pissed with the end of the rams game, and was not impressed with todd’s record in his last head coach gig, i have a wait and see attitude

  6. View from 132 Says:

I’d still like to know how Arians can be so arrogant to think he did Bowles a favor by leaving him such a supposedly well oiled machine. That’s ridiculous. Bowles inherits a team with Super Bowl or bust expectations with an aging QB that may play one or two season of his coach’s 5 year deal at most.

One hit to Brady’s knees, and this is not an ideal job – its a train wreck and Bowles will be blamed for it. Add in the most difficult schedule in the league that is full of top young QBs that can’t wait to face a very questionable D-line (Vea + old vets or unknown youth?) and a blitz happy coach with no Deion Sanders or Mike Haynes anywhere in the secondary.

At best, Bowles is Barry Switzer and watches Brady get credit for another Super Bowl. At worst, he took over a contender and oversaw the rails coming off. Good luck, Todd. At least you can plan on starting Kyle Trask next year when the post-Brady Glazers suddenly get cheap again.

  7. Bird Says:

Saints gave their d coordinator turned head coach 3 year deal

5 year seems high imo. Especially with his prior head coach record
But whatever It was jets where everyone goes to die

Since we have two d coordinators, will bowles still call plays for defense ?
Concerned about defense to be honest

  8. SOEbuc Says:

Licht and Bowles will tear it up on defense in the drafts they’re recruiting. Defense (and Tom) wins championships.

  9. Buccos Says:

Bowles is one of the top defensive minds in the NFL. As long as he has a good OC he will be fine. The Jets experience was just that- experience. That is what is needed right now for a veteran team. I like me the timing and the hire.

  10. New England Patriots Fan Says:

Todd is perfect for Tom as he won’t touch the offense so Bryon and Tom run it now.

This allows Tom and Bryon to control 50% of the game and allows Todd to control the defense and HC duties. Tom is now a co OC/GM/Recruiter/Drafter, QB and face of the team.

  11. Alanbucsfan Says:

Brady and Leftwich will run the offense (less no risk-it no biscuit) and Defensive assistants and Bowles will run the Defense.
It’s a nice transition from a coaching continuity perspective and a classy move by Arians to step down(up) while Brady is still QB so Bowles is set up for success.

  12. Drunkinybor Says:

I thought this would happen next season. Kudos to Bruce if your heart isn’t in it ALL the way. He made the right decision and helped our franchise tremendously. Of note is he’s sticking around and not going to retire by a fishing pond.

  13. SKBucsFan Says:

Well the season just got more interesting. We will see if Bowles has improved since his last foray as head coach. I am skeptical. Hiring old head coaches that weren’t successful in their earlier attempt doesn’t usually work in the sports world. At least it’s only been 4 years.

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Well, at least we’ll be re-signing Suh.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

This just in…Tom Brady decides to go back into retirement! (jk)

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You know…technically…if Byron gets another ring and a head coaching job next year…and Brady retires….our OC in 2023 could be…Tom Brady!

  17. SOEbuc Says:

    Drunkinybor

It was destined to happy. Brady pushed him out early, said I gotta see the new system before I can consider resigning next year. Nothing personal just business and a good move to get started with or without the GOAT next year.

  18. Tye Says:

Well, one thing is for certain, IF Bowels screws up this team with this talent, he is without a doubt one of the worst HC!…. If that happens, hopefully by 2024 the Bucs can land another legendary HC to replace him…

  19. Adrnagy Says:

Brady has all green light to do whatever he wants on offense.

  20. Oxycodoms Says:

Hopefully when bucs win super bowl fans will say its arians team

  21. Bucsfan4ever Says:

Well, that certainly came out of the clear blue sky.
Arians was kinda semi retired anyway.
    I’m just shocked.
    Go Coach Bowles.
    God speed.

  22. Bucsfan4ever Says:

Apparently I slept through all this mayhem.
When I sleepily read the headline I assumed TB got an extension as DC.
    What a shock..
God bless you Coach Bowles .
Now please excuse me while I chew or choke on this big ol chaw.

  23. Rod Munch Says:

    Ooof, 5-years?

Not sure I’d have gone that long, but oh well, it’s not my money and it’s not like the Glazers have any issues paying a bunch of former coaches at the same time.

But Bowles really never had much of a chance with the Jets, and still did well early on. With the Bucs, it’s the same issue, he’s being handed a championship team, just like Dungy handed Gruden a championship team. All Bowles has to do, just like with Gruden, is not screw it up.

  24. Hopalong Bucco Says:

WOW. Recent call for Rooney Rule changes sure impacted this whole deal. BA has always been a trailblazer when it comes to new hires. Quit all the bitching and give TG a chance to win next Super Bowl. Congrats to all concerned–Glazers on down.

  25. Hopalong Bucco Says:

    Sorry, meant TB not
    TG

  26. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I think Arians was semi retired anyway, so I doubt much will change.

  27. Goatfarmer Says:

I woud imagine Todd’s stock rose thanks to the team’s legendary performance against the Rams in the final 30 seconds of the divisional playoff game. I mean the way they shut Cooper Kupp and Matt Stafford down with all those great blitzes, enabling the Bucs to win their second Super Bowl in a row.

    Oh, wait……………..

  28. SOEbuc Says:

Is it me…Or did this happen at the same second the premiere of IN THE CURRENT. The first minute intro you knew they had been planning this since production.

  29. SOEbuc Says:

And how can’t Suh not be coming back after that episode.

  30. Adrnagy Says:

Defense has been the most improve unit the last 3 yrs. Offense = brady. Im super pumped up for this season. Bowles HC. Brady green light.

  31. Adrnagy Says:

No finger pointing. No throwing shade at no one. Simple … go and play. Make plays. No excuses. Excuses are for weak HC

  32. Adrnagy Says:

Jpp , suh will come back for cheap. Honey badger will come

  33. Esteban85 Says:

Spot on Alan! I think this was an honorable move by BA. This will stoke the coals of speculation; however, once the draft is over the whole thing is history and a new year is in the works. Bowles inherits an entire coaching staff built by BA as well as a super bowl contender. Could it get any better as bucs fans? We are living the good life indeed.

  34. Mikejp Says:

I strongly believe Tom is the real head coach now and completely control the offense. He probably check the game plan of the defense. If I were Tom, I would request to control the game plan and a decision to draft.

  35. steele Says:

Putting the noise aside, nobody should forget or forgive the defensive collapse vs. the Rams that squandered a masterpiece Tom Brady comeback. Bowles is responsible for that collapse, and so are most of the players on the field for those embarrassing series.

He is now the head coach. I hate the idea that failure is rewarded so handsomely. He had better rectify the boneheaded game plan, playcalling and poor adjustments.

  36. Dreambig Says:

Todd Bowls has a 37.5% win percentage as a head coach. Has any coach in the history of the NFL gone from losing over 62% of their games over 3 seasons and then magically become a winning coach?

  37. steele Says:

And starting now, strengthening the defense absolutely must become the emphasis. The offense is already most of the way there, except for Gronk and some depth. The defense is a shell.

  38. SOEbuc Says:

    Dreambig

Except Bucs have best GM and front office in the NFL. NYJ hasn’t been for Gods knows how long. How can you continue to have so many top five picks over a decade without having a decent program.

    ——–

He started off his career 12-7.

All he has to do here is not screw things up, like Gruden when he was handed a championship team from Dungy.

  40. DaBux Says:

Brady is doing a great job as GM.

  41. MadMax Says:

We have a championship program running here Mr. Bowles and you have been a huge part of it….but never make a mental mistake like single covering Kupp (one of the best WR) in a critical part of the final minutes of a championship game, as long as you reign supreme here….

Thats all I ask Mr. Bowles

  42. MadMax Says:

You cant fix stupid and laziness….and you cant teach IQ and speed of mental process…..lucky we are…those are in place with Mr. Brady.

  43. Buc4Life Says:

I don’t like it. He is not a good Head Coach and was a mediocre Defensive Coordinator last season. But he is better than both Arians and Leftwhich, which is good enough to win a Super Bowl hopefully

  44. Bobby M. Says:

Brady has yet to sign an extension which means next year he can head to Miami or San Fran…..I suspect behind the scenes this played a role.

  45. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Steel are you freaking serious??? This man orchestrated one of the best Super Bowl defenses ever seen. He shut down the future supposed goat and kept him out of the end zone and last year with all of the injuries on the defense alone still prevented it from imploding the season. His defense pretty much shut the Rams down in the fourth quarter until the last two plays of the game when the PLAYERS allowed Kupp to get out of bounds killing the clock! That right there alone is what lost that game for us! You best believe they’ve been taught over and over TACKLE IN BOUNDS. If the players had done their jobs on THAT PLAY the Rams would’ve never had time to get that last play off because with no time outs the clock would’ve expired and we go into over time. You little whiny crying little girls who keep pining over that last call WHAT DID YOU EXPECT HIM TO DO WHEN THE LINE WASN’T GETTING ANY PRESSURE???? If He didn’t and the same thing happened YOU and every sports caster in America would’ve been crying OH WHY DIDN’T HE CALL A BLITZ!!!!! The players had plenty of time to get into alignment but were not at the snap. It was Devin White’s responsibility to get them there and he didn’t. Stop blaming one coach and blame the players! The man helped us get a title and had done more in his the years here than ALL of the coordinators since Monte Kiffen quit on us in mid season, which by the way no one hates him for that! Get over yourselves!

  46. Oneilbuc Says:

Todd Bowls the new scapegoat watch and see 👀 lol 😆 🤣!! And all this Brady coming back next year I don’t see it Brady said he’s playing until he’s 45 and I really believe he wanted to retire last year but just like he said he wanted to finish what he started wich means his contract. This will be the last year we have Brady!!

  47. Jayajay Says:

Bowles shat the bed in the final few minutes against the Rams, totally cost the Bucs their entire season and probably another SB ring… but, yeah, by all means make HIM head coach. Worst move ever.

  48. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

Anyone that is a REAL FAN-go back and look at the PLAY BEFORE the long pass to Kupp that sealed it. On that play Stafford throws a 20 yard out to Kupp who catches the ball 7 yards from the sideline , Miike Edwards had the over part of the coverage and misses the tackle in bounds that would have kept the clock running , but if you look at the entire play as it develops Bowles had Kupp double covered with SMB on the under coverage. SMB is all over Kupp and under cutting his break on the route as he should knowing that he has over coverage from Edwards , But SMB foot tangles with Kupp on his break and SMB goes down. SMB would have had an incredible opportunity to intercept that pass due to the coverage that Bowles called , but it was just unfortunate he went down on the foot tangle. The way I see it , SMB would have intercepted that pass and Bucs would have already been in FG range-Bucs win and Bowles is the HERO. Todd is a leader and a good coach. Bucs are lucky to have him.

  49. Goatfarmer Says:

Oneilbuc speaks in “we” and “y’all” terms. Just go back to the Pudriots, or Jets, or wherever you came from.

  50. stpetebucsfan Says:

If I was an owner or GM I’d certainly make my decision based on ONE play call.

Some of this crap is just ridiculous.

In NASCAR it’s called the “silly season”. The off season always provides a lack of real news so people seem obligated to make spit up for something to talk about.

And speaking of making stuff up and pulling it out of your backside…wow these threads are full of it!
