Ryan Jensen Doesn’t Want To Waste Time With Refs

January 13th, 2022

Hustle.

It seems Bucs gnarly, Pro Bowl-bound center Ryan Jensen and referees don’t get along much.

Jensen gets talked to by the zebras before each game and told to quit playing — and hitting — past the echo of the whistle. And it also seems the refs don’t like it when Jensen wants to place and snap the ball before the zebras get their hands on it.

Former NFL offensive lineman Brian Baldinger, who now is a talking head for NFL Network, has been pumping out a lot of video this week of the Bucs and Eagles in anticipation of Sunday’s playoff game.

Baldinger likes to share X’s and O’s videos on Twitter and they are good stuff. This particular video below shows the aftermath of a play late in the first half Sunday when the Bucs were in a hurry-up offense trying to take the lead on the Stinking Panthers.

After Mike Evans got a lot of YAC, Jensen hustled behind the play and didn’t even bother waiting for the refs to place the ball. Jensen grabbed it, placed it (didn’t seem to fudge with the yardage either), bent over and was ready to snap the ball to Tom Brady.

Then you see a referee running in from the right with an arm outstretched as if he’s yelling at Jensen, “No, no, no, no, no!”

Jensen wasn’t f@rting around. He wouldn’t let precious seconds burn off waiting for the refs. It’s pretty funny and Baldinger has a good laugh at it.

Why are the Bucs a good team? Because they have a bunch of vets, true pros, who bust their tail like Jensen. Trust Joe, that kind of hustle rubs off on teammates.

Jensen. Cappa. Whitehead. Davis. Gronk. Gholston. Godwin…etc.

    Refs better be in shape.

  9. Roy T. Buford Says:

i hate that rule of waiting for the ref to spot the ball so the DEF has a chance to line up, Peyton Manning made hi career off catching the DEF napping or out of position. stop complaining or celebrating and get lined up. If the Offense can get set before the DEF then isnt that just a more prepared well coached team? Seems like punishment for good play calling or clock management to me.

  12. STL-BucsFan Says:

Jensen is MUST have for Brady! Just a nasty mean old school lineman. have to resign him and Godwin

  13. Beej Says:

Cam you imAGINE what Jensen would do to an opposing player who took a cheap shot at Brady?

  14. BA4President Says:

Joe, is there a penalty in the rule book for snapping a ball that wasn’t placed by the refs?

If not, Jensen is nothing short of a complete bada$$.

  15. Listnfrmafar Says:

Brady during his tenure with Pat’s perfected catching defenses with 12 men on the field. Jensen is better served aiding the refs than trying to defy them. Remember his costly unsportsman like conduct penalty in Jets game. No one better to protect Brady than Jensen but he needs to be a real pro and mind his P’s & Q’s.

Jensen has really cleaned up his game since he was signed in 2018. It was ridiculous early on with him, getting way to many knucklehead penalties being Billy Bad Azz. He still has an occasional brain fart, but has turned into a consistently good player. Very glad he is on the Bucs , and yes keep him.

    GO BUCS!!!!!!!

  17. Bird Says:

Agree. You need an enforcer on your team. A protector of your best players – one which is brady. If someone goes after brady or another player with a cheap shot. Jensen is the guy to handle it . Big dude / wrestler / black belt/ looks like he could put down a case of beer in a few hours

He is a bad arse. You should think twice about messing with him

Heck , Jensen even did it for flacco when he played for ravens if you havent seen the play. Look it up.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Never understood why Jensen’s contract wasn’t reworked last year like all the others…..I hope we can resign him.

  19. JGhotier Says:

I think Jensen is the engine of this O-Line and a vital piece. I sure hope we re-sign him. He gives our Line its edge too and hustles every play. Love the guy all the way around.

I’d be CURIOUS to know where the JOE(s) have Jensen ranked for Bucs’ Centers all-time currently w/ the likes of Ryczek, Wilson, Grimes, Mayberry, Christy and Faine….

  20. Hodad Says:

Pay Jensen, let Cappa walk, resign Stinnie. That’s good stuff there Joe.

  21. Joe Says:

Joe, is there a penalty in the rule book for snapping a ball that wasn’t placed by the refs?

If the refs were total a-holes, yeah, delay of game.

Off top of head probably best. He’s surely no Sean Mayhem.

Ahhhh, gotcha. I guess the offense is thus delaying the start of the play by not giving the ball to the refs to spot the ball.
I wonder if that is one of those few unwritten rules where refs are expected to not screw with the game

  24. Swampbuc Says:

I think Baldy would come out of retirement just to put Buccaneer helmet and shoulder pads on. He is definitely a fan. I love the dude, a pure football meathead that knows the game like no other.

  25. unbelievable Says:

    Hahaha I absolutely LOVE THIS!

  26. bigdaddio Says:

If the offense spots their own ball that the ref determines is within a football but not forward of the correct spot (and in the proper spot/hash or between) they should allow the offense to spot the ball.

  27. bigdaddio Says:

….just like the side judge gives arm signals to verify proper number of players on the LOS they can do the same if the ball is spotted correctly.
