Joe Tryon’s First Impact May Be On Special Teams

May 27th, 2021

New special teams ace?

Barring injury, it is unlikely to expect first-round draft pick, edge rusher/outside linebacker Joe Tryon to be starting.

However, special teams coach Keith Armstrong is drooling at the chance to use Tryon on special teams, maybe in several assignments.

In his Zoom press conference this afternoon, Armstrong gushed at Tryon’s talents and would like to try him in a variety of special teams roles.

“You love everything about Joe,” Armstrong said. “Great athlete. Smart. He can run. [He has] size. Physical. I remember years ago in Chicago I had a guy by the name of Brian Urlacher. And they let me use him for four weeks in training camp and every preseason game. And then mysteriously right after that fourth preseason game, they were like, ‘Hey, he’s no longer covering kicks.’

“You love everything about [Tryon]. He is a really sharp kid. So I think he can fit in [on] punt and punt return, you name it. Kickoff coverage, kickoff, whatever you need him on. Field goal block, etc.

“As you look at his tape at the University of Washington, he has played in a ton of different roles on defense out there. So he’s a sharp kid. I think he can do it [playing special teams]. I think he would do a helluva job.”

Sorry, Joe cannot get worked up in late May about special teams in September and beyond. Can’t do it.

Have to admit, though, when Armstrong suggested Tryon could be used on field goal block-team, that got Joe’s ears perked up.

Biggest need this year is special teams play, why not be excited, I’m excited for anything Bucs and Lightning right now.

I wonder if his body type can handle the humid heat at first intense training camp. Cramping early-on could be a problem.

I would think that would get Joe’s attention!!!

So this is what a draft looks like when you have no needs. Should have picked Elijah Moore if we wanted special teams help. I think for a LB covering kicks we have mr.irrelevant and I don’t think that’s a bad nickname.

If Tryon actually plays a lot of special teams it may mean that Pat O’Connor doesnt make the team this year.

Tryon needs to learn the 3-4 LB position. His role is to shadow JPP. That should be it.

Brian Urlacher? That name is a blast from the past. He’s the only player selected for the HOF from that 2000 NFL draft class. There’s another guy who might make it, selected 190 spots after Urlacher.

Special Teams has been a weakness for a long while in these parts. We seem to have a top 5-8 Offense and Defense. Looks like we figured out the kicking game last season, now if we can lock down that return/coverage game, we may be unstoppable. Few things change that momentum like a big punt/kick return. It would be a crazy thing to be dominant in all 3 phases of the game.
