Todd Bowles: With Success Comes Individual Goals

May 27th, 2021

Shaq’s coaches weigh in

It makes sense. After winning a Super Bowl, a player might focus more on personal goals.

Shaq Barrett dove into that pool with his recent comments. If you missed them, they’re a lot of fun. The Bucs sacks king stopped just short of saying he expects to be anointed king of the world.

Joe asked defensive coordinator Todd Bowles for his take on Shaq’s comments today and for what he sees as Shaq’s ceiling after two seasons of studying him.

“There’s nothing wrong with setting high goals,” Bowles said. “Obviously, we’re team first. And, you know, with success comes individual goals. So right now, I don’t really look for one guy or the other to say they’re doing this or doing that. But as a player you have the push yourself to get better. And that’s one of the things he’s doing. He’s pushing himself to be the best and as long as long as he’s pushing himself to be the best, he’s helping the team out. And I can appreciate that.”

Yes, Shaq is talking big. And as his position coach Larry Foote said today, Shaq is now making the monster bucks, which means you gotta produce.

Shaq was a beast last postseason but far more mortal during the regular season.

Foote said Shaq got frustrated early last season, especially by his lower production and more chipping by receivers and tight ends, and Shaq must fight through that better in 2021.

Love shaq!!! Haha, but he benefits greatly from the rest of that d-line. Anyone of those guys go down, they double team shaq and his production drops tremendously. I’m sure Shaq knows that too.

As long as Vea stays healthy Shaq has a shot at those goals

He got more sacks in the 7 games Vea played in than the 13 games that Vea was out.

You have to love Shaq’s Career …
UFA Denver > Special Teams > Backup LB > FA Tampa > Sack Leader > Super Bowl Champ

Setting higher goals is just what Shaq does and does well.

    Agree completely SlyPirate.

Hey SB….it is a TEAM game. I wonder how sacks TJ Watt would have without his defensive line and other LB’s, and while we are at it, Brady would look like crap without and O line or WR’s catching the ball. And Running backs do not do real well getting hit 2 yards behind the line every play. Shaq is a flat out stud, and glad he is on the Bucs. Vea is awesome and my favorite player, but asking him to get big sack numbers is not going to happen. Again it is a team game.
BTW Rod Munch… Vitas value will never be his sack numbers.. So to say he has not really done anything is denying the facts. The fact is that when Vita has played in the last 2 years next to Suh and Golston, the Bucs have the BEST run Defense in decades in the NFL Yes one of the BEST run defenses since the merger in 1970. Check the historic numbers against the run for the Bucs D in 2019-20 when Vita plays. The D Line allows the LB’s to hunt, that is how Bowles likes it. The D line will never lead in Sack numbers in T Bowles 3-4 Defense. The heat will always consistently come from the LB’s. The Front 7 of the Bucs is awesome and will continue. GO BIG SHAQ ATTACK and the RESIDENT RHINO VITA VEA!!!! GO WORLD CHAMPION BUCS!!!!

UM 1976 you must have misunderstood my post.
I was essentially illustrating that it is a TEAM game by pointing out how much better Shaq is when Vea is complimenting him by eating up blocks.
I was not insinuating that Vea should have sacks

Love it, let the man play. He’ll get his sacks while The Bucs win games. It’s a win – win situation. A team is made up of its players, great players make great teams! GO BUCS!
