Todd Bowles Not Satisfied

May 27th, 2021

Bucs DC Todd Bowles.

One would think the guy in charge of a defense holding arguably the best quarterback in the NFL without a touchdown the last time it played a game, would be somewhat pleased with his squad’s development.

That doesn’t seem to be the case with Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Bowles was asked today after his defense took care of a murderer’s row of quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl — Drew Brees, drama queen Aaron Rodgers and Pat Mahomes — where his defense needs to improve.

Bowles suggested everywhere.

“We’ve been looking at the cutups with the other coaches, we have to have a lot more growth from everybody,” Bowles said. “I think they made the most growth coming together as a unit. The back end and the front end… they came together at the right time.

“The [mental errors] had cut down [and] they got used to seeing [how] each other got to play. Some guys learned to play with some nicks and bruises and learned how to be professional about that. You get on one of those rolls and they come together.

“Looking at the tape, [improvements are needed in] all facets — front, middle and back end. … We’ve got a lot to take care of.”

Some of this is posturing. Bowles all but admitted it.

Later in his Zoom press conference this afternoon, Bowles was asked about repeating as champs. He said if a team thinks they all have it figured out by last year’s results, they’ve already dug their graves for the upcoming season.

Coach Bowles has got *that* right.
Quickest way to stink is to think you got this game whipped.
    Remember 1980?

The Bucs will have the #1 defense in the league. They are loaded. The young guns are now vets.

The offense will compliment the defense, too. In the last four games of 2020 TB12 threw 1 INT to 12 TDs. That’s a lot of long drives to keep the defense fresh.

Adios to slim Pickens Mickens… no need for idiots getting arrested in Bucs lockerroom !

yeah, agree with Bucemup do not set these guys up to fail with zone soft cushion defense all game. Washington game was hard to watch . need a winning game plan for week 1.

He is correct on the backend, SMB definitely got away with some physical play, DBs gotta clean that up

Towards the end of the season the general look of the defense seemed to be reflexive instead of reactionary. That is, everyone seemed to know where the other would be and where the ball was, there were three or more pewter jerseys. The first four games should tell us if they can pick up where they left off.
